This book was really handy to have in New Zealand to identify some of the birds that we saw. It has the scientific name, common name, photograph, and description for each bird. It is one of the Penguin (publisher) Pocket Guides, so it is small and easy to carry with you.

Great: one of the very best family histories I have ever seen; full of illustrations and obviously the product of many years of in-depth research having to do with the thousands of people named. His work on the early Drakes, Hunts, Hines, Martins and Coles is exceptional.

An inspired concept - that presidents in crisis are in an "adrenaline rush". If you doubt that, read this book. May chose tightly written selections that get right to the point - the nation (or the world or even his job) is at stake and the President must make his move. Should Washington use troops to quell an uprising? Can JFK get missiles out of Cuba without a world war? I was fascinated by the summary of Nixon's struggle to duck Watergate blame. The beauty of this volume (like the others) is that you are exposed to great writing you might not otherwise have seen. This volume easily holds its own with the others - it's still survival - just of a different nature. In the interest of accuracy, enlarge the cover shot to see the actual list of authors. The catalog description is a bit off, no Shelby Foote or RFK work - but plenty of strong stuff you'll enjoy.

The best translation of Ovid's Metamorphosis

Sandys translation is deeply layered with images, not to mention the copious notes he has made throughout. Though later (1632), his rhythm is closer to Ovid's than Golding's 1567 version, and is taut and dense. I was thrilled that this was reprinted.

Thanks to Alfred Bush and Lee Mitchell for a compelling 150 year photographic chronicle of the history of American Indians.

This volume is the ofspring of an exhibition of the same title that was held at Princeton University, and it's the next best thing to having been there.

The book is the first to hold photographs by american Indian photographers, many of which have not been reproduced before. It's a significant documentary record.

Pioneering Aviation
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-12
This is the wonderful true story of one of the great aviation pioneers of the twentieth century. Noel Wien was a young midwestern farm boy in the early nineteen hundreds who's love of flying began the moment he saw his first biplane. In the early 1920's, he became one of the first bush pilots in Alaska and his accomplishments and skill as a pilot soon became legendary. He flew everything from trapper's pelts to the mail and was the "first" to land a plane in many of the most remote areas in the Alaskan wilderness. More than once, he was forced to put his plane down in severe weather and "walk" back to civilization. All of this was accomplished using very primitive maps and no real landing facilities. Wien became an expert at landing his plane on sandbars in river beds. He eventually got to the point where he had a map of the many mountains and rivers in his head and his instincts as a pilot saved him many times. He was a pilot "for hire" who could be depended on to deliver much needed news and supplies to just about anywhere in the wild. What made his exploits as a pilot even more extraordinary was the fact that in those early days of aviation he was doing all of his flying in open cockpit aircraft in severe and sub-freezing temperatures. Navigation was done strictly by vision and he would only fly when his instincts told him he could make it to his destination. He was the first to discover the wreckage of the plane that killed Will Rogers and Wiley Post and he flew a legendary new route across the Canadian rockies to deliver the photographs of that ill fated flight to the newspapers in Seattle. Wien's accomplishments grew through the years and he eventually started Wien Alaskan Airways. His love and dedication to his craft helped to open up the Alaskan wilderness and make it so accessible today. If you love adventure and the pioneering spirit, this is the book to read.

There are Plenty of Delicious Pizza Recipes in this Delightful Book

Review Date: 2006-07-15
Seven years ago my husband Dub and I sailed into Whangarai Harbour in New Zealand. On our way in I spied some friends or ours, Gayle and John, who we'd met in Tahiti. They were Kiwis and they were ending their five year circumnavigation, home at last. We anchored close to their boat and later dinghied over for sundowners (usually Coke and Rum). That evening, as usual, we told tall tales of our adventures at sea and we congratulated ourselves on being in this wonderful place at this wonderful time. Later, as we were saying our goodbyes, Gayle gave me her set of the Salamandar Book of Series Cookbooks. They are sold by HP Books in the States as paperbacks. Gayle carried these books around the planet and now she was giving them to me, complete with her notes (written in the books) on the recipes, how well she and John liked certain dishes, which were their favorites, how hard they were to prepare. She knew I was a cook and she thought I'd appreciate them. She was right.

Like all the books in the series "The Book of Pizzas & Italian Breads" is about five inches wide and about a foot tall, making them kind of unique among cookbooks. But one should not be put off because of the odd shape, these are real books and you can find mighty darned good recipes in them like in this book. Many people would think that you couldn't bake on a sailboat, but you can. We have a convection microwave on "Tara" and it bakes just fine. In fact the last thing we did in it was the Asparagus and Ham Squares on Page 47 and "Yum Yum" is what I have to say about them. There are so many different pizza combinations and ways to make pizza, probably the list is endless, but there are quite a few good ones presented here. Plus, as an additional added benefit you get some very delicious dessert bread recipes. What a deal. I use this book a lot and if you get it, I bet you will too.
