Invaluable resource

I have been teaching for seventeen years, and this is the most treasured teaching resource I have. You can tell that it is written by a fellow teacher, a real professional. The format is very straightforward, no glitz, just black and white lists. Ms. Bush has compiled valuable lists of homophones, homographs, analogies (categorized by the words' relationships), inferences, idioms (organized by subject), and a multitude of other things. Before each list Ms. Bush gives you suggestions for how to use the list. Ms. Bush saves you hours of brainstorming time. You don't have to scratch your head trying to come up with lists of words on your own or trying to generate examples. The lists and activities help teachers with oral and written language development. I would imagine that it would be most helpful for elementary school teachers and those who work with second language learners. Again, it is not a "shiny" book, but it is a supremely practical and user-friendly resource.

After reading this book, I truly felt that I knew Laura Bush. It seemed to make her a little more of a real person to me. I enjoyed the book very much. It gives me a good feeling to get to know our first Lady from a perspective that shows us her love for children, books, and her passion for reading.

Deeply disturbing

Phillippe Sands "Lawless World" is a deeply disturbing book for anyone who shares my belief that America lives by the rules.

It is indeed a "whistle-blowing" account of just how many rules of international law the Bush administration, with the complicity of Tony Blair of Great Britain, flouted in the run-up to and execution of the Iraq war. For someone like me who previously knew next to nothing about the body of international law that exists, it is incredibly eye-opening.
From the Geneva Convention and its protocols, to the Convention against Torture (1984), and the Charter of the United Nations, Sands reveals in plain and readily understandable language just what this body of law contains, how it got there, and how and why the Iraq war violated so much of it.

I have been accused of being an idealist and a liberal. (Which makes me doubly tainted). If I am an idealist, it is because I grew up in a time and in a place where I cut my teeth on the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution of the United States, and the Bill of Rights. I grew up believing the U.S. was a country of ideals, rules, a code of ethics and fundamental decency, that we had a system of checks and balances that prevented any one arm of the government from becoming too powerful, and that this government governed with the consent of the governed.

When laws, whether domestic or international, are flouted without demur, as they have been by this administration, we are all of us, each and every one of us, at risk. To quote Sands, "what you take away from others you take away also from yourself."

I would recommend the book to anyone with even a remote interest in what went on both before and during the Iraq war regarding the body of law that existed internationally from the end of W.W.II. International law is the only thing now standing between the civilized world and barbarism. Greater adherence to it by all the nations and peoples of the world could make obsolete Wordworth's words,
"Have I not reason to lament what man has made of man"

Taylor's book predicted many of the disasters unfolding in Afghanistan and Iraq. His forecasting method also shows how to improve outcomes by changing key factors such as the role of Pakistan.
His critique of pacifism includes pacifists' own recommendations for improvement in antiwar concepts and tactics.
After describing ineffective Bush administration efforts to coordinate the scores of agencies fighting terrorism, the author presents some thirty experts' proposals for improving our protection.

I don't believe this book is as biased as much as it contrasts Christianity and Islam in 1830. A ten year girl was one of the prophet's four wives, a well documented practice still condoned in SA today. Contains interesting historical data I was unaware of, or is neglected by politically-correct works of today...

Biography of a modern explorer

I grew up reading Len Beadell's books. They were friendly, chatty, informative; just like sitting down to hear the stories of a man who'd been there. This biography filled in a lot of gaps for me and gave me a much better understanding of just who Lennie was.

The chronicle of Len Beadell's contribution to the exploration and opening-up of Central Australia is great. I look at today's SUVs and remember driving around in a 4 cylinder Land Rover, like Len Beadell did most of his exploration in, and I know who the real tough guys are. Yet Len, while as tough as his hob-nail boots, was a warm, caring man, who loved life and his friends and family, and probably almost everyone he met.

You can still get this book in Australia, a land that honors and respects its surveyors, and enjoys them even years later (e.g., Major Mitchell - "The Mad Major"). Enjoy this story of a real modern-day explorer and a real man. Then go and read Len Beadell's books and get to know him better.

This book is a valuable addition to a collection of Lincoln and the Civil War. There is very little that is written about the Speeds, especially since 1900. It goes into detail about James, Lincoln's second Attorney General appointed in 1864. Joshua Speed, Lincoln's best friend, is covered well too. Although we will never learn what we would like about Joshua Fry Speed, due to missing and (allegedly) destroyed letters, this book comes as close as possible. A fun read!

We bought this book because my husband was considering a job offer in Saudi Arabia. Before he went there for a week visit, we read the book over and over again. I personally found the book very informative, detailed and interesting, from getting the visa to shopping, finding a place, etc even the brief history, this book tells all! There's only one thing that I reckon the authors should elaborate more, women's issues. In my case, I want to know what's the prospect getting a job for me. They pointed out that it's almost impossible for women to work, but what about teaching in schools/ lecturing in university? Maybe I should explore this matter myself.

Anyway, we're planning to move there soon.
