You have to look! Automotive Voyeurism as Great Art

Review Date: 2008-05-14
Andrew Bush is one of the premier photographic artists living today. This wonderful collection of his candid photos of drivers in their automobiles in and around Los Angeles is one of the most startlingly original artistic concepts ever seen. These photos capture ordinary citizens in their most unguarded moments. They are realer than real when engaged in that quintessential American activity: driving their cars. Each photograph, taken from a camera mounted on the side of Bush's own car, is the same in format, but infinitely varied in its effects. One stares and stares at each image wondering what is going on in the minds of the drivers. It is anthropological as well as artistic. We learn that these photographs exist in greater than life-sized formats. Certainly one should try to see them exhibited if possible, but every lover of photography needs to add this reasonably priced book to their collection. The images are timeless, and more fascinating every time one looks at them. The wonderful interview with Bush at the end gives an unusual glimpse into the mind of an exceptionally fertile creative artist.

This book compiles articles on the entire spectrum of issues, written by most of the leading authors in the area. I would say it is the best single book you could read if you were trying to get up to speed on the economics of electricity deregulation from scratch.

Fans of multimedia computing will want to read the chapter titled "As We May Think", in which Bush, President Roosevelt's science adviser, speculates in 1944 on the future management of information. His "memex" is an uncanny harbinger of hypertext. The book is must reading for technology history buffs! - Richard Devir (gsft99a@prodigy.com

Best comparative history available

Almost all scholarly treatments of the aristocratic system in Britain have dealt only with a narrow historical period -- which is not surprising, given the nature of the historical profession. But this provides no developmental context for the student. Bush covers the whole history of the upper classes, from the 12th century to the 20th. Also unlike other writers, who consider only the titled peerage itself, he regards the baronetcy and the gentry as "minor nobility," part of the same social order or estate, which makes the British system appear much closer to that which operated on the Continent. This concise study divides the discussion into the privileges of rank (far fewer in England than on the Continent), the status of aristocratic rank (quite a different matter), and the resulting capacity for survival (much greater in a nation never afflicted by a successful revolution among the commons). He considers the composition of the peerage and the gentry and the interpermeability between the two levels, their degrees of landed and non-landed income over the centuries, the aristocratic mind-set, the role of the aristocracy in preventing absolutism in the monarchy, the impact of agrarian capitalism and industrialization, and the gradual shift in political power by aristocrats from its heyday in the 17th and 18th centuries (when it controlled Parliament) to its near demise after 1911. Bush makes heavy use of technical terminology (subinfeudation, gavelkind, rack-rent), however, so that one could wish for an expansion of the brief glossary. However, this volume should be one of the first stops for any new student of the comparative history of the upper social classes.

There's plenty of information about the failures, counterproductivity, and untrustworthiness of the Bush administration. And Matthew Rothschild says we do not have to invent conspiracy theories in a misguided attempt to beef up the case against this administration.

He's right. Such theories just sabotage one's credibility. And this article is pretty good at explaining how far from reality the 9/11 conspiracy theories are.

If you love your dog, you need this book

What a great book for anyone with a dog. Both amusing and useful. Lots of facts, not to mention some great short stories, and a sprinkling of humor as well.

The book covers everything from Presidential pooches, designer dogs, and exercise tips. Did you know that the largest recorded litter was of 24 puppies? The poor mother. Or would you like to know why dogs roll in smelly, and sometimes dead, things? Read the history of the unluckiest dog in the world (his medical insurer was the really unlucky one). And the story of how a dog shot a man.

On the useful side, there is a very good list of items for a first aid kit for dogs, tips for safe car travel with dogs, and what are the vital signs to look for in a dog.

The format--which is one short, snappy paragraph or two on a topic, and then on to the next--makes for brisk, fun reading.

Recommended.

Not since Richard Clarke's "Against All Enemies" and the Iraqi Prisoner Abuse Scandal, these may be the most damning revelations against the Bush Administration to date !

Scathing in his infinite wisdom and compiled from years of study and outcomes of the Bush Administration, this Book "Everything George W Bush and the US Government knows about Diplomacy" by Dr Richard Poullin, takes over from where countless other Authors have left off.

First there was the Controversial Election, then:

The Zoe Journals Book One: Wings of a Dove; Book Two: Evidence of Things Unseen By Beverly Bush.

Zoe, a prayer warrior, fervently prays for her family and records her prayers in her journal. Some of her prayers are included as chapter introductions in these books by Beverly Bush. The reader is able to learn a lot about prayer and the faithfulness of God through this series. In Wings of a Dove, Zoe's daughter has been married to an abusive man for eleven years and the abuse is escalating. Zoe prays for her daughter and grandchildren throughout the ordeal and gives them godly counsel. In Evidence of Things Unseen, Zoe's son and daughter-in-law are devastated when their three-year-old daughter disappears from a store. Zoe upholds them all in prayer while the search for the missing little girl drags on. There are so many truths that are taught in these books besides the effectiveness of prayer and the faithfulness of God. Wings of a Dove teaches what a Christian marriage should be like, how to help a troubled adolescent, how Christ enables us to forgive when it seems impossible, and how God loves and redeems even the "unlovable". The second book has women participating in a Bible study focusing on the character of God from Kay Arthur's Lord, I Want to Know You study. Other themes touched on in this book are the need to be vulnerable and compassionate toward those grieving, how false guilt can hinder your relationship with God and how to help deliver someone involved in occult practices. Beverly Bush is a talented author. Her style reminds me of Mary Higgins Clark, but with a strong Christian focus. The characters are very realistic and have depth. I highly recommend these books and hope to find others in the series to read.
