When I got this book I took it to a sleepover with my friends and it was a lot of fun.We were cracking up for hours. But you shouldn't take it to seriously because after all it is just a book and I seriously doubt it has mystical powers. But over all if you just want to play around and are interested in predictions and that type of thing you should enjoy it.

Distinct viewpoint

For decades after her death in 1895, Maria Amparo was virtually forgotten in the United States. Montes and Goldman have unearthed and reanalysed her writings, showing her as an astute commentator on the expansion (conquest) of the US into its south west. When Amparo was writing, the Mexican-American War was recent vintage, and the annexation of California, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona was still an open wound to those Mexicans who were forcibly turned into Americans.

The authors also show how Amparo critiqued the post Civil War US society and its Gilded Age, from the distinct vantage of a Mexican American. It should be of interest to those of you who have studied that time, perhaps via more "conventional" mainstream American historians. Some of her novels criticise Anglo racism, but instead replace them with a Spanish racism that allows mixing, but retains "whiteness as the highest identity marker".

an excellent account of family life in 18th century England
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-18
this is an excellent book for anyone as fascinated as me with historic novels. it centres around the lives of the Tatlow family- a small family in a weaving community in Newbridge, England. the story tells of their life, the community, and some history of the area. the story climaxes as the monotonous, regular-set lives of the weavers are thrown into turmoil witht he passing of an enclosure Act in parliament. it sated that the land used by the weavers as common food-growing area and such, is to be taken away for the use of a new farming technique consisting of putting walls around the area. the weavers now have to find new ways to cope with their dillema, and the story of the now ever-changing lives of the Tatlows take new twists and turns during the few decades in which the story stretches. an excellent work of art well worth the trip to the library.

Consider: Howells and James are considered contemporary. "Mr. James is becoming more interested in British types." "Hawthorne still towers, serene and alone."

Haircare for children...

Maya's Locs is a cute story of a mother and daughter sharing the downside of
African American hair care for someone tender-headed. The story details the
various things Maya's mom tries to make her daughter's hair softer and easier
to maintain.

This is a wonderful book for parents who are considering locking their child's
hair and in search of a tool to "show" how the hair will turn out. In addition, I think children and those interested in hair care will enjoy it as well. The illustrations are done by Beverly Hawkins Hall and beautifully portray the story. Parents and young children both will enjoy this book and its bright and colorful illustrations.

The review listed for this book is incorrect.
This book is not about a father and daughter, but about a girl named Natalie, and all the fun things she does with her Nana.

Natalie is excited because she is about to spend the day with her Nana. Each page reveals the many many ways that Natalie's Nana is one of greatest people in her life.

I wish there were more books out there about Nanas, but if you are looking for a book to read to your child that explores the wonderful relationship between grandchild and grandparent, you will like this book.

1000 years of Europe
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-03
Russell offers an understanding of Europe from the fall of the Roman Empire to the 15th century. This thousand year span is hence necessarily brief for one book, no matter how lengthy that book. But Russell manages to cover the salient ideas and events that we now understand as characterising medieval civilisation.

He describes the agricultural economy. For all the economies were agricultural, to first approximation. From this, we see how feudalism was built. On the backs of the long suffering peasants and serfs. Knights and lords ruled over these unfortunates.

The role of the Church is covered prominently, as befitting its role as a major secular power. Religious issues and troubles are explained. Some of which presaged the Reformation.

Minotaur is a horror novel in the classic mode. It's extremely creepy, scary, tense and a little blood-thirsty. Everything you want and expect when you read horror.

Private Detective Jerry King is hired to investigate the recent alleged murder of two teenage boys. It's as he delves deeper into the case, with the aid of his reporter girlfriend, that he realizes these are no ordinary murders. Something way more sinister is at play, way more horrific and terrifying than a mere madman on the loose. A madman is behind the gruesome attacks, but it's what he has created that is the really frightening part.

Some scenes in this book are so creepy and tense that you will be constantly looking over your shoulder as you read. The author creates imagery for his scenes that really puts you in the story alongside the characters.

I'm fast becoming a bit of a fan of this writer, having now read three of his books. It's a rare skill that an author can adeptly write both fiction and non-fiction as this writer cleverly does. Definitely worth reading.
