This book is well written. It is a great reference for someone wanting to know more about old Asian motorbikes. If you are already a huge fan of vintage Japanese bikes, you may well know most of this information. Even so, it is wonderful to have all of it at your fingertips...

I am a beginning coin collector and I've really enjoyed going through this book with the coins I have in my collection. The book describes many aspects of coin collecting such as how they are valued, what certain marks mean, how coins are made, and many other interesting details about collecting US coins. The value tables are not up to date though. So I have also been using the book THE INSIDERS GUIDE TO US COIN VALUES 2000. This book also has good (but not as thorough) information for beginners. With the current coin values it helped round out my search for coin collecting information.

The body as a manifestation of human culture
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-21
In this highly accessible monograph, John Burton, Prof. of anthropology at Connecticut College, lays out the story of the human body as a vessel of culture. As we know, typical manifestations of human culture include language, music, customs, modes of production, and location. Burton's task herein is to draw attention to the various ways in which the body and its functions are both defined and controlled by culture. As becomes apparent, such phenomena as bodily adornment, sexuality and even reproduction are always culturally specific. In typical fashion, Burton does not attempt to draw human universal conclusions on culture and the body, rather leaving the reader with the idea that, though human beings certainly share many common biological characteristics, it is the individuality of cultures which decides how we may define ourselves. In the end, we are left feeling, along with Burton, that even the oft-touted individualism of American society is really part of the control system of our own culture.

Review Date: 2008-01-01
Dear Ones is a book with a glimpse into the daily life of a family on a foreign field. Beginning with preparations to go, it tells the story of getting settled into a new home and new way of life in New Delhi, the capital city of India, in the year 1972. The reader is able to share in the excitement of foreign work, and is also given the opportunity to see the concerns, the sorrows, the burdens that are a part of the life families working in areas where the needs so far outweigh the laboring force. Local Christians and customs are introduced, and the book is illustrated in an effort to make the story vivid to the reader. It is our belied that those who read Dear Ones will finish it with a new awareness of the souls of other people and with a deeper desire to be used of God in sharing His truth with others.

Overview of Poetry from a Thougthful Poet
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-29
This is an excellent overview of poetry, but it would probably be inaccurate to call this an introduction. Although Raffel avoids using a lot of technical terms (and defines in the text those that he does use), this book assumes a fair degree of prior knowledge of English literature. This book is no textbook; it doesn't provide a systematic introduction to poetic form. But what it does provide is an overview on poetry from a thoughtful poet, translator, and critic. Because he is a translator, Raffel provides examples from poets from Japan, Vietnam, and Indonesia as well as traditional English and American poets. Raffel is at his best when he is discussing the rhyme and music of poetry, which for him is the essence of poetry. He writes that if the poet Adoes not give musicality, some shape, it does not exist as a poemCand he is no poet.@

Remarkable Story
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-14
Katherine Burton's biography of Mother Theodore Guérin, published in 1959 under the title Faith Is the Substance, is being reissued in recognition of her canonization in 2006. The latest American saint was born in France, joined the Sisters of Providence there, and in 1840 undertook a missionary voyage to America. During the remaining 15 years of her life she founded a new congregation of the Sisters of Providence, the first Catholic institution of higher learning for women in Indiana, elementary schools in Indiana and Illinois, two orphanages, and two free pharmacies. Through it all, writes Mary K. Doyle in the foreword, "she was loved and admired by her peers, fellow sisters, employees and the surrounding lay community."

Mother Theodore, while dealing with chronic poor health and the hardships of life on the American plains, brought patience to her encounters with everyone from bigots who spat upon the sisters in the street to a bishop who insisted on exercising control beyond his authority. Burton includes a good example in the account of the newly professed Sister Theodore's appointment as head of a French school in which the girls had been deemed incorrigible. It was their habit to behave disrespectfully to their teachers, ignore all instructions, and dance about the classroom at will. Unlike others before her, Sister Theodore simply stopped speaking and waited until the girls became bored with their apparently ineffective antics. She also ceremoniously broke apart and threw away a switch that had been used to punish them. "Before long it was clear that she had won them over," wrote Burton, "no doubt because she had used persuasion instead of the severity they had come to expect."

This book challenged me to think about my own relationship with competition--with my siblings, in my career, during my childhood, and for my future as an entrepreneur--and to recognize competition in settings where I was not recognizing it. In this well written and well referenced book, Mariah gathers together the thoughts of many women and interweaves them successfully with her own powerful experiences. Already I sense that reading this book has made a difference in my life. I eagerly look forward to reading other books by this author.

Brief Anatomy
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-17
This is a nice, truncated version of a book many find unreadable today. If you wish a taste of Burton, an idea of his odd brilliance, this will do. The editors choose some nice portions. Unfortunately, reading a brief version is a bit like a Reader's Digest version of 'War and Peace' or some other novel where detail, conversation, the finely drawn characters are the story. You may have the plot and the highlights, but not the story itself. That said, the whole "Anatomy of Melancholy" is a long project and a little is better than none. Give this a go. You may be drawn into the long version, but your time will not be wasted by sipping at this cup.
