A Clear, Well-Edited Case BookReview Date: 2007-08-23
If, on the other hand, you're a law professor who's considering reading or using this book for one of your classes, please give this book a fair chance as it's well written, well-edited, and provides a clear picture that helps prevent your students from having that look of desperation that's so common during the first year of law school.
Contracts was not my favorite course from my first year of law school (far from it, in fact) but this book is what made the course bearable for me. The format of the book is simple, and in its simplicity is brilliant.
Each chapter begins with a clear and concise introduction, providing the student with the basic vocabulary necessary to understand the material that that chapter covers.
The chapters are further broken up into sections. Each section also begins with a brief, but well-written and clear introduction, which guides the student gently into the ideas that are about to be covered. After this introduction, there is usually a list of the Restatement and U.C.C. provisions that are relevant to the material about to be covered. Then there's a case or two, followed by questions and notes on the material just covered. This is followed by a couple more cases, which are also followed by questions and notes, and thus ends that section, to be followed by a section that is structured similarly.
It's a simple formula, and it works. The introduction orients the students successfully. The Restatement and U.C.C. provisions provide general rules that are then applied in the first case or two. Note materials and questions following those first cases are provided to get the student thinking. The next couple cases provide exceptions to or variations on the general rule. Note material sums it up and then the student is ready to move on to the next topic.
This books is one of the prettier ones in my collection (with the faux-leather cover) and doesn't get destroyed easily like the books published by Aspen. Also, it's only about an inch and a quarter thick, which meant it was the only book I didn't hate dragging around for a semester.
I'm really glad this was the book I used for my intro-Contracts class.

Can the storm be calmed?Review Date: 2008-03-10
A Stormy, Steamy Romance!Review Date: 2005-04-24
Aidan Storm is magical in more ways than one. He can control the power of the weather, and when he's very emotional summer storms rage. He is about to be paired up with his destiny and he's not going to go quietly.
Melissa Cross is in New Orleans for one reason and one reason only. She is there to finish a very important business deal, and than she is going to go back home to Boston where she belongs. Well, so much for best laid plans. Instead she is going to finally meet the one man that will melt the icy wall around her heart, she is also going to have to come to terms with his rather powerful...magic. Will she finally allow herself to love the way she wants, and will this large fun family welcome her with open arms?
Again this is a very sensual read. The love scenes are far from filler, and are extremly hot. Truly not for the faint of heart. In any event this is a fun series and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the books that Ms. Burton has written.

A Storm for All Seasons: Summer HeatReview Date: 2004-11-12
Summer Heat introduces us to the Storm family, but focuses on the younger son, Aidan and his stormy romance with Melissa Cross. Set in New Orleans, this romance will cause the already hot temperatures to soar!
Ms. Burton is a talented author whose stories have well developed characters, tight, well-written plots and lots of hot steamy sex driven by intense emotions.

A Twinkle In His Eye-ReviewReview Date: 2003-10-09
I was rather enthusiastic about reading this book as engineering is often a field that is left out of picture books but was again disappointed in the text. I was expecting the book to focus more on the field of engineering and explain more to the reader about this field. I think the idea behind the book is a good one but again, the booked lacked real content that could help educate a child on the field of engineering or what exactly an engineer does in the "real world."
OUTSTANDING AND LOTS OF FUN TO READ!Review Date: 2001-03-31

There are very few children's books on the market that focus on a nuturing relationship between a father and daughter. This book does a great job to foster that bond.
I hope to see more from this author who obviously has a definite connection into the minds of children.

BETTER THAN A 4 - MORE GENTLE THAN MOSTReview Date: 2004-11-09
Abigail Smyth turns out to be just the right woman for this man and his sons. It is not long than she has his little 3 and 4 year old sons laughing again.
Abby was expecting a house similar to San Francisco standards and did she get a surprise when she sees Matthias's ranch house.
Matt's refusing to marry again battled with his falling in lust with Abby. He has no love left to offer.
Holden McGowan, nearing his 35th year, runs a stage line to Crickhollow, Montana and is in cahoots with Hilda Marie Clements to get Matt married.
The stories behind these men [what little there is] makes these characters fascinating. Possessiveness, jealosy, lust, great story binders plus that nasty elusive bear.
I can't wait for Holdens story -- definitely a wonderful keeper.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - HARD TO PUT DOWN
enjoyable late nineteenth century American romanceReview Date: 2004-05-26
In San Francisco, as her younger cousin gets married, orphan Abigail Smith writes yes to Matthias' mail order proposal. However, her aunt and uncle reject her leaving town. Treated more like a servant, Abigail sneaks out for Montana and her new life.
In Montana, Abigail learns that Matthias did not correspond with her as well meaning friends did. Having no other options except crawling, she persuades him to give her the summer working with the boys at the ranch and if at the end of her trial period he still refuses to marry her she will leave. As love begins to flow between the adults and Matthias sees how nurturing Abigail is to his sons, he knows he must ask her to stay as his spouse, but also feels guilty that he is betraying the memory of his beloved first wife.
THE UNEXPECTED WIFE is an enjoyable late nineteenth century American romance. Though Abigail's family especially her cousin is unappreciative, the Montana cast is a caring group. Matthias is a fabulous protagonist struggling to raise his two sons and run a ranch. The Montana mob adds understanding of his character as they prove by their actions how much they respect him and worry about his stress. Abigail is a wonderful intrepid soul who readers will cherish as she makes other cast members and readers appreciate life.

Unexpected WifeReview Date: 2004-07-05
One of my favorite parts was when Matthias asked could he hire her (Abby)to look after his boys, but she refused because of her burning desire to become his wife.
Matthias is also a very strong person and it is revealed as he goes through alot of emotional pain from the lost of his wife. This book simply warms the heart.

A Book for the AgesReview Date: 2006-09-03
A terrific checklist for you life and a wonderful book to read with your young peopleReview Date: 2006-09-18
What kind of steps do they have on their path to lights, glamour, and riches? The very mundane activities of developing useful skills, getting educated, making yourself invaluable, realizing that good enough never is, staying in the game, being careful with your finances, being loyal, avoiding drug and alcohol abuse, staying in the game, being patient, get the job, look for the good and praise it, and many more. You can see that there is nothing that appears to be magic in the list. But there is! Just as the difference between a good ball player and the hall of fame is about one more hit per week, it is the small but consistently positive behaviors that make so much difference in a life.
As I read through this book, I did find some things that I need to focus on and get back in my repertoire. None of us is in the groove all the time and it sure helps to have a checklist to make sure we are thinking about and doing the right things. It is easy to get deflected from the right path and travel ineffectively for a while only to wake up and find yourself at some distance from where we want to be. Here is a most helpful checklist that is based on solid principles and offers a strong foundation to anyone in any career.
What is particularly interesting about Hollywood is that it is based on short term groups that form to do a project and then end. But the next time a group needs to form, the people tend to work with those they know will contribute value and help the group be successful. It is a fine example of how markets and business work. (As an aside, I wonder why so many of its participants are therefore anti-free market people...) You will be a better, more successful, and, yes, powerful person if you implement these principles in the way you conduct your life.
Terrific for anyone, but you will want to be sure every young person in your life gets a copy and reads it multiple times. The best way to get them read it is to read it with them - preferably just a step a day - and then talk it over with them. And then keep referring to them in reference to your own life as an example for them. Or point out how those they see on the news have missed this or that point or point out how someone in the news got it just right. The wrong way is to keep harping at them about the principles in THEIR life. Don't do that. Let them think about that and come to it on their own. Just keep them in the air all around them.
Enthusiastically recommended.

Yet another great translation by WatsonReview Date: 2004-08-02
To begin with, the excerpts of master Mo are very interesting, particularly his notion of universal love, his vigilante stance against war and his hatred of music. Though the prose is dry (Watson explains this in an excellent introduction), the ideas are pretty spectacular, particularly considering the time from which they came. Although the master Mo's teachings did not sit well with the Chinese in the end (Mencius accused him of "having no father" and Hsun Tzu writes a parody of his essay, "Making Music is Wrong") their historical context is clear from this translation.
The works of the master Hsun are also presented here. His notion that man is by nature evil is quite compelling, all the more so by his hope that education can overcome this nature. An interesting anecdote is tht two of his students (Han Fei and Li Si, I believe) would go on to be very important contributors to the Machiavellian Legalist theory, which essentially ruined Hsun's chances with the Chinese populace. Still, his essays are interesting and are presented here.
Finally, my favorite of this bunch is the Legalist, the master Han Fei. Believing that order could only be kept by strict system of reward and punishment (and the punishment was incredibly harsh) and that a ruler could keep power only by a constant check on the prestige and faculty of his ministers and even his family, Han Fei's philosophy was a radical departure from the philosophies of the past. Though his theories were not original (again, as explained by Watson, an earlier writer by the name of Lord Shang had espoused these theories earlier), Han Fei would give them a voice with a very ornate and beautiful writing style (with the number of parables appearing, I was reminded of Plato). Of course, these theories would be put to practice by the First Emperor of Ch'in (Qin), Shi Huangdi. When the Han came to power after his death, Confucianism became the norm, and Han Fei, as its opponent, would lose his stature, but still research was done on his writings throughout the years.
All in all, these writing are very interesting, and Watson's translation does them (and us) a great justice. I hope that anyone with an interest in Chinese history or philosophy (yeah, including you RTK out there!) picks up this fine book!

Fine translations of fascinating philosophers!Review Date: 2001-01-22
Mo Tzu was an early critic of Confucianism; he founded a movement known as "Mohism." The Mohists advocated "universal love." This is less sexy than it sounds: they mean simply caring for each person equally, as opposed to the Confucian doctrine that one should care more for family members than for strangers. Mo Tzu is noteworthy because he is perhaps the first Chinese sage to present genuine philosophical arguments. The "essays" in this collection will challenge your preconceptions about Chinese philosophy: they are practical, hard-headed, and relentlessly rational.
Hsun Tzu (pronounced like "syun zuh") was a major figure in later Confucianism. He is best known for his doctrine that "human nature is evil." This teaching got him condemned by Song and Ming Dynasty Confucians, who thought that the view of the rival philosopher Mencius that human nature is good was the orthodox view. However, Hsun Tzu is a careful, systematic, and eclectic thinker. He may be the greatest Confucian philosopher of ancient China.
Han Fei Tzu was a figure in the so-called "Legalist" movement. Although Legalism could sometimes be pushed to draconian extremes, Han Fei Tzu has lots of insightful advice about realpolitik.
Burton Watson is one of the leading translators of Chinese philosophy and literature. He lives in Japan, and is heavily reliant on Japanese scholarship, but Japanese translations of Chinese texts are often pretty good, so this isn't a bad thing.
