Excellent reference + study material for the routing exam

I used this book to study for the Cisco Routing Exam 640-503. The material is very relevant to real world issue I deal with in our network day to day. The book is worth the money for the great sample configurations and debug info alone. It covers in more detail the practical side of doing ip routing then most of the Cisco Press titles. The authors clearly know the material and put together sample configurations and networks that you might actually do in the real world.
I would pick this book up in addition to any other study materials for the CCNP Routing exam. I personally think the routing exam was the hardest of the bunch. Now I get to study for the new 640-901 Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (BSCI) for the CCIP, the great news is that this book has ISIS, which is on the new BSCI exam.

Definitely, Advanced is the word here. I have read it, and I use this book a lot as Reference. Very useful, nice examples; very well explained.

If you're involved with Cisco Routers in any way, you should have this, even if youre not the network administrator, it will help you understand how routers work. I even used it as a reference for my Bachelor's Degree Project. Definitely a must-have!

One of the most sought after certifications is the CCIE. CCIE is also the hardest certification to obtain and for the most part it has to do with the Advanced IP routing exam and lab. This book should provide much needed help in that area.

Written by two CCIE's this book tackles the extremely complex subject of IP Routing in great detail. Topics dealing with standard routing are only the beginning of this book. More advanced topics like classful and classless routing, IS-IS, integrating the routing protocols together, NAT, DDR and some of the most compete and detailed coverage of BGP and but a few of the areas discussed.

Each and every section has CCIE tips included and well as router screenshots. Both author make the most of their uses of the diagrams and figures giving you on of the first book for the CCIE exam.

I started reading this book after I had just finished reading ALL of the Sherlock Holmes stories (for the first time), and quite simply, it grated on my nerves. The writing style does not come close to that of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's, who's writing is well thought out and presented. I once read somewhere that O. Henry never edited his stories, and it is VERY noticeable. It is really strange to have an explanation of why he uses a certain word over another as part of the text, albeit paranthetically. I've since moved on to Poe, whose short stories are pretty good. On the plus side, the irony is pretty good.

I have a smile on my face every time I finish reading a story from this book. Each story tickles my fancy ... I was sold on this volume by an amazon.com reviewer -- whose enthusiasm for O. Henry was contagious. O. Henry was one of my favorite story tellers in the past ... I am pleased to have discovered this book. It is filled with delightful and enlightening short stories about the foibles of humanity ... many are heart-warming and sensitive, many are humorous, some are serious. He has mastered the art of the "surprise" ending for which he is famous!

"The Gift of the Magi", "Brickdust Row", and "The Furnished Room", bring back fond memories of growing up. I remember events and characters from these stories. Each story is poignant, emotionally satisfying, and complete. O. Henry possesses an uncanny ability to hook the readers attention in the first paragraph and then keep the reader hanging on every word, anticipating what happens next ... O. Henry is the master of creating a twist to the ending ... he often throws the reader an unexpected curve. He shows us life is *not* always what it seems.

In this volume, O. Henry writes about people, human reactions, culture, society, class structure and how to earn a buck, through a bit of conniving and deceit. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories which took place out West and in Central America ... they were fresh, original and well-crafted. His technical expertise as a writer, the use of words to create an impression and set up a plot are sheer genius. They demonstrate the reason for his stories are popular throughout the world. One of my favorites is the story titled, "The Ethics of Pigs". Here is a sample of O. Henry's famous word-play: "Jeff is in the line of unillegal graft. He is not to be dreaded by widows and orphans; he is a reducer of surplusage. His favorite disguise is that of the target-bird at which the spend-thrift or the rockless investor may shy a few inconsequential dollars." [p. 147, A Signet Classic] This book contains stories with a wide range of themes, plots, and locales. It will appeal to a large audience of readers from middle school age on up. My highest recommendations. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

The thing I always find remarkable about reading O. Henry is that the "surprise" or "twist" at the end of so many of his stories arrive so naturally. You never feel manipulated. They are so simple and logical, like the narrator's tone. It's little wonder that so many consider O. Henry to be one of the founders of the modern short story. And that an annual short story award is given out in his name.

His stories, like Horatio Alger's, give us a unique first-hand account of what New York and other cities were like at the turn of the last century. And for that it is a valuable collection as well.

The great standards are in this collection, like "The Gift of the Magi" and "A Retrieved Reformation". But it's the lesser known, the hidden gems, that make this collection so remarkable. People make much of the fact that so many of these tales were written while O. Henry was in prison for various minor offences and that the stories provided him with bail money. The fact is that the man had a lucid view of human nature and the funny way life infringes upon it. He could have--and did--write so many of these tales outside of the jail cell.

Burton Gives Us Hope to Become the Hope of the World Again

Review Date: 2008-09-26
I had the profound experience of reading The Age of Lincoln. It is a great gift to all of us. Its interpretation is radically different. It sends the consensus theory of U.S. history packing better than anything I've ever read. The consensus theory, that there never was serious social conflict in the United States, was what every aspirant historian had to believe if they wanted to survive as a professional historian when I was young. This theory, along with overt racism and sexism, drove me out of the profession. Some of what Vernon Burton wrote even surprised me, especially the depth and violence of the class struggle in the United States during the nineteenth century. As a fellow southern historian, I am especially happy to read what he wrote about varying attitudes towards race among southern whites and organized, armed resistance to racist terror by blacks during Reconstruction. I cringe when I read the phrase "the racist Southern whites" which is repeated over and over by even the most politically correct historians. I share Burton's nostalgia for the moralistic, non-conformism of the transcendentalists and the southern yeoman values of Lincoln. These values are still there as part of our national heritage. I might be a blind optimist but I believe they are now reasserting themselves. I hope this book will be widely and carefully read and understood. It is not too late.
We can still be the hope of the world. We are in the process of becoming one nation with freedom and justice for all: what Lincoln wanted.

A book that reads like a Ken Burns film...popular not just historical

Dr. Burton succeeds in bring the reader back into the feel of the mid 19th century America. He calls the period roughly 20 years either side of Lincoln's inauguration "The Age of Lincoln". This is not a Lincoln book. Its about the transformation of the United States. The major themes are well documented by both the author and other review's here.

What is stunning is how accessible the book is to the non-historian. This is not a thesis work but a portrait of Americans. Woven around the framework of obvious historical events are individual stories and social trends. Specific stories, well researched and cited. All told in great narrative. I read alot of nonfiction and the occasional fiction , I can't label what the style is but its a bit like a Ken Burns documentary. You see the pictures. You hear the music. As you read. Its an easy to read book...something we readers can appreciate. Yet Burton is on solid factual ground. He brings so many facts and stories to light that I'm sure the work adds to the period's research. Even the book's cover adds to the overall work- a striking bloody red, white and blue across a typically American rural setting at sunset. Its a carefully chosen artwork circa 1861 entitled "Our Banner in the Sky" oil work by the American painter Church. Look at it here.

The reader is immersed in a difficult, painful yet singularly American period. The authors keeps the readers attention with a subtle yet brilliant literary style. Just read the first page.

A five-star work and one of the better books you'll ever read.

Orville Vernon Burton brings scholarship, passion and his own biases to this unusual account of the United States through the end of the 19th Century and a bit beyond.

Burton tracks the impact of ther Thirteen, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution on personal freedom for whites, blacks and everyone else. It is a fascinating book for several reasons.

First, Burton is a fine and conscientious scholar of the era. His research is evident on every page. His description of the Democratic Party, its role in the attempt to perpetuate slavery and in the awful depradations visited upon blacks after they acheived freedom is fully told here is fully told here. Burton also tells the history of the unfettered capitalism of the era and the attendant political cronyism that attended its rise. Here, there is a whiff that Burton might be an anti-capitalist himself, but it is difficult to tell with certainty.

What Burton does describe here is the heroic story of common people reaching out for personal freedom, for the right to be free of any kind of oppression. And here, Burton himself is heroic. He tells this story in great, almost overwhelming detail. His treatment of the Reconstruction Period is especially well done and will sadden most readers with its detail and possibly sicken some as well. As the zeal of the North's purpose cooled after the war, the Democratic Party became the handmaiden, if not the instigator, of terrible deeds. This is the most detailed social history of the period I have ever read.

Burton brings to life the enormous, jarring forces of change as freed slaves attempted to join the political, economic and social fabric of the nation, while defeated Southerners worked to subjugate them once again, while immigrants arrived in droves to expand the labor force and push down wages. The nation was still expanding westward, seeing the Native Americans as a force to be conquered, if not worse. Capital was being exploited in the form of new industries, bringing people off the farm into the cities where they became dependent upon the capitalists - and not without anger and resentment at their exploitation.

Burton tries to describe all these currents converging, with the blacks being stripped of their civil rights in the South, not being welcomed in the North and the capitalists colluding with the politicians to oppress everyone.

To his credit, Burton does the job well, but not perfectly. The march toward the end of the book and the end of the 19th Century becomes a bit bedraggled as Burton tries to wrap things up neatly. He doesn't do it neatly, but it really doesn't destroy the high quality of his work.

Overall, a truly unique and important history, even if a somewhat slow read.

This is an inspiring book about how to identify those things that keep us overly busy in life. Valorie Burton addressed various aspects and effects of busyness that spiritually, mentally, physically and emotionally affect us and our relationships. Chapter topics ranged from procrastination and to-do lists to celebrating milestones in life and creating a self-care lifestyle. I appreciated the personal stories Ms. Burton incorporated in the book. I could relate extremely well when she discussed being in a constant state of overdrive and jumping from one activity/goal/achievement to the next, without enjoying the journey.

The bite-sized chapters were ideal, especially for those of us who don't have a lot of time in our schedules for leisure reading. Each chapter offered very practical tips that can be immediately applied to any jam-packed schedule. My copy of the book included a "One-Minute Meditation" at the end of each chapter, which was a Bible scripture that corresponded with the chapter topic.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for simple, practical ways to slow down, re-evaluate their busy schedule and enjoy life again.

I was not looking for this type of a book when I bought it but when I saw the title and read the note from the author of "Dear reader, I trust that our paths have crossed for a reason" I knew that I was meant to read it.
I first read this book about a year ago and have since read it three more times. I recently started using it as a discussion book for our church adult education program that I am leading due to being inspired by this book's message.
I am not going to say that this book will give you free time that you won't know what to do with but it will help you to prioritize you busy schedule so that you have more times for the foundation of fullfilment, that being your focus on "Faith, Family and Friends"
Although I feel that it is a faith-based book, I did not find it preachy and merely made you focus on what is really important in your life and spending quaility time where it is important.

When I first saw "How Did I Get So Busy?" I knew it was a book I needed to read. Even with all that was going on in my life that contributed to my busy-ness (wife, mother, student), I knew that I needed to make the time to read this book. I am so glad that I did! This book has really made a positive difference in my life, and continues to do so even as I reflect on the lessons I learned. No matter what is contributing to your busy-ness, this book is for everyone. If you want things to change, they won't until you put forth the effort to make the change happen. Stop waiting for the right timing to happen. Make the right timing happen! This book is very enjoyable to read and the structured format is so helpful! I highly recommend "How Did I Get So Busy?"

Valorie Burton is an amazing woman who has used her talents to empower us in our everyday life. As a mother, professor and political candidate, life can get extremely busy. When I purchased this book, I expected to simply get tips of how to maintain an organized schedule. However, I received so much more. Valorie explains how "busyness is often based on fear" (p. 52). What a revelation!

I've shared usurps of "How Did I Get So Busy" with my students and they are astounded at how 28 days of application can change their habits. I encourage all of you to take a moment and read this book from cover to cover and I assure you, the profound message(s) will change your life. Thank you Valorie for helping me to get my thoughts and life back on track. You're truly divine. Sincerely, Dr. Ro 2010

Author brags too much about herself, superficial advice

I got this book from the library with high hopes but I am disappointed in it. There are many instances I felt the author was just bragging about herself, in the guise of "sharing". By that, I mean she makes opportunities to "share" her own story, but somehow even her so-called problems seem contrived to promote herself. For example, in one part of the book, she was relating that she thinks her own tendency to be busy all the time started in childhood, when her mother put her in kindergarten at the age of four. She then goes on to say she was trying to prove to the world she is "smart" by getting her masters degree at age 21. Well, that does prove she is smart, and surely she knows it, but by the time she is done with telling the story, I was annoyed by the obvious self-promotion. In another segment, she relates of how she and her husband took a leap and bought a home that "nourishes" them physically, emotionally and spiritually. She then gushes about how lovely it is to walk in the streets near her home, how happy she is they took the leap and bought it. Well, that's great, but in these economic times, that sure does seem like bragging.

I got the feeling the author led something of a life of priviledge, and cannot relate to why many of us are busy. She never mentions having children and as a busy mom, I can say a large part of why I am overly busy is the care of my children. Like many moms, I was looking for advice on things like how to slow down without shortchanging the kids, but kids were never really addressed in this book. That is a glaring omission, because kids (or the care of adult parents, or both) add tremendously to one's busyness and most women are in some sort of caregiving role for a large part of their lives. It is very easy to make the adjustments listed in the book if you are a woman with few caregiving obligations, but if you have those issues, then many of the suggestions here will be difficult, if not impossible to put into practice.

The author lacks insight into the reasons why people are so busy, the very real obligations some of us face, and cannot simply reduce by self examination. Some of her points are good, but there appears to be a lack of understanding of the serious responsibilites many of us face.It is very easy to say "slow down" and "take time" but when one is faced with the care of parents and children, or working two jobs to save a home from foreclosure, such advice seems worse than trite.

This book is about Paul O'Neill and his relationship with his father. His relationship included the life lessons that his father taught him while they were on the diamond. Remember, it is important to have this relationship with a special family member so that you always would have somebody to talk to. I personally enjoyed this book and loved reading it. The book was kind of fuzzy throughout some parts. By this I mean, that some of the book was filled with filler. The book then went on to talk about how his father was important while he was on the road for a long time. In addition, while he was on his way to the majors. It is evident that Paul is a great author and he has great writing abilities. Finally, I would just like to say that this was an all-around great book!

While I can respect the idea of this book as a tribute to his father, I can't recommend it as an entertaining read. Paul O'Neill was a decent ballplayer with the Reds who became a great ballplayer with the Yankees, but he's pretty dull no matter what uniform he wears. This was a nice idea, but check it out of the library unless you live and die Paul O'Neill.

I am a Cincinnati Reds fan and will always associate Paul O'Neill with the Cincinnati Reds and not the Yankees. After all, he grew up in the Columbus, OH area and identified the Reds as his favorite team since childhood. He has also chosen to settle with his family in the Cincinnati area since retiring. The book is a wonderful exploration of the father/son relationship and reveals a human side of Paul O'Neill that we didn't always get to see on the field.

Me and My Dad is Paul O'Neill's tribute to his late father Chuck O'Neill. The book takes you through Paul's life from playing homerun derby in his backyard as a child, to playing in the World Series as a New York Yankee. He places emphasis on his fathers influence and wisdom he shared with him through the many troubles he had in life. Throughout the book Paul tells us about his experiences and how his father could always put a positive spin on everything by relating life to baseball, or baseball to life. The book helps to give the reader a deeper and simpler look at professional athletes.
While it is a must read for any Yankee or Paul O'Neill fan, I can not recommend it to anyone else. Even for a baseball fan like myself it has limited appeal. It is short and not very well written; some parts seem to drag on and on about nothing. Yankee fans will love it just to get a deeper understanding of one of their better players, but others will laugh at Paul's girlyness and grow to dislike him by the end. Because of these reasons, I can only recommend this book to Yankee fans, and possibly women who like to see the softer and more sensitive side of men.

I took this with me on a flight and by the time I returned from my trip the book was almost finished. I recommend this to women with interest in relationship / abuse issues. Having lived through this type problem in my own life, I found it well written and very realistic.

Not something I would recommend. Interesting enough to keep me reading but I did not find the characters to be "real". The main character Lynn was barely likeable. She was so old fashioned it seems Belva might have fashioned her after herself rather than a woman of that day & age. Weak, timid, closed off, even in her private thoughts. The one true thing that kept me going was that one of these times she would fight back get mad, even, strong, whatever. Never happened. She even gave the jerk back all the jewelry he had bought her over the years. COME ON! Of course yes, she made it through everthing she did still gracious and loving and bla bla bla. She may have handled the situation in the most "moral" way she could have but hey, that's not real.

A page turner that examines the relationsip of a well-to-do couple with a horrible secret - domestic abuse. The author skillfully shows how this whirlwind romance evolves into an abusive relationship. A must read, the author's best in my opinion. If you liked this book, also read Mary Higgins Clark - A Cry in the Night, it has a similar theme of a whirlwind romance with a seemingly prince charming that turns into a nightmare.

Robert and Lynn Ferguson live in a lovely home in an exclusive Connecticut community. Robert is very succesful and on the outside this couple and their children appear to be the "perfect family" with no problems. Even their best friends, Bruce and Josie Lehman don't know of Lynn's shame, but after a few incidents begin to suspect that all is not well in the Ferguson household.......Bruises appear on Lynn frequently and Josie who is a social worker questions her friend, but Lynn always makes excuses and explains away her bruises as"accidents". In addition to this, the Ferguson children begin to show disturbing behavior.....The wall that Lynn has built cannot come down until she face the truth of her husband's anger and abuse toward her......The very serious subject of this well written story opens our eyes to the fact that not only poor people exerience abuse, but also the rich people are not immune to this behavior. This is something that people only whisper about.

This book was recommended by one of my friends at work.
I really enjoyed what seemed like an insider's view into political corruption and intrigue. I was also shocked by what happened at about page 50! I recommend this book just because of the that. Also the end of the book (the last 50 pages or so) were so intense, I couldn't stop reading until I finished it. Great read all the way through! I'm definitely interested in anything else Mr. Burton can produce.

Midwest Book Review - fast-paced thriller!!

I've heard it said that as long as the public has "theirs" - meaning the good life - they don't care how down, dirty, and lethal politics is played in our nation's capitol. In this fictional account of how money rules our government, the public doesn't get enough truthful information out of D.C. to make that decision either way. In $oft Money, power begats power, money begats more money, and only a privileged few rake in the bounty. And the American taxpayers, who closed their eyes while career politicians took over, are reaping the bitter harvest.

E.L. Burton has created a fast-paced thriller that entertains and intrigues. I couldn't put it down. It's packed from start to end with avaricious power hungry villains, the hapless folks they victimize, and idealistic men who take an honest stand. His characters are well-developed and defined.

Clay Danvers is the smooth talking, good looking spin doctor who serves a popular President. Clay considers himself to be a skilled, well-paid assassin. No, he doesn't actually KILL people, but he brings about their downfall until they might as well be dead. Whatever scruples Clay once had are long since buried by his crimes.

Preston Wesley is the people-friendly, charismatic President of the United States. A covert group of wealthy, powerful, and ruthless men stay busy day and night maintaining Pres. Wesley's front and ensuring all skeletons of the past stay hidden.

The undisputed leader of the covert group is Mike Baker, President and CEO of Bytes Technology. Mike is a billionaire many times over from his computer software business, but even billions are not enough to sooth his greed for more money and increasing power. Mike is vicious, a puppet master with a passion to control the President and all he stands for.

Lawrence Brazelton is one of the unfortunates the group has sacrificed in protection of the President. He's lost everything dear to him, but isn't quite the broken man he seems. He has the hope of loving for a second time and finding life outside the Beltway, if he can just live long enough to make it happen. Lawrence has a covert op of his own underway, and neither the President nor his cohorts will like it much. Paybacks will be hell if Lawrence Brazelton has his way.

I couldn't wait to see the bad guys taken down in this one, and held my breath in hopes that at least one good guy survived to make it happen. Mr. Burton does a fine job of holding the reader's interest, and introduces subjects that will keep you pondering after the book ends. For certain, I will never use a cell phone, telephone, or connect to the internet again without thinking of this author and $oft Money.

A Frighteningly Realistic Look At Political Corruption!

As the author of Strike Hard, I found this book to be one of superb quaity in the aspect of frighteningly realistic. $oft Money explores the dark and twisted underbelly of political campaign contributions that are in the forefront of today's headlines.

Currently, there are a number of debates on Capitol Hill concerning campaign money and the format by which it is contributed. Many times over the years, we have seen news articles that talk about corruption and scandal associated with the so-called "soft money" of politics. E.L. Burton has taken this and turned it into a story that shows all of the implications involved with these monies, and how even those who go to Washington with the best intentions can come out being on the wrong side of the corruption fence.

"Absolute Power corrupts Absolutely", and "Money is the root of all Evil", are catch phrases that everyone associates with government politics today. This book explores how one man can be held in thrall by these two "magic potions" - power and money, and how another can be torn between friendship and duty.

E.L. Burton has managed to tell a story that is one of the best new novels of this millennium, and shows promise of being one of the stalwart authors that will dictate the basis for corruption/suspense novels for years to come.

I agree entirely with what Mr. Grover (author of STRIKE HARD) and his new Columbus based Book Nook Review Club had to say about this book. So I guess all I can add would be be to say this was a great first effort on behalf of this new writer.

E.L. Burton weaves an entrancing tale with $oft Money. The characterizations are wonderful, and the storyline reads as though it came right out of the news and into a television movie.

$oft money tells the story of Lawrence Brazelton, a former legal partner of President Preston Wesley. Brazelton has evidence that could critically damage Wesley's term of office, and as a person. However, he has been holding onto it for a long time. A presidential protection group discovers the secrets that Brazelton holds, and threatens to not only dispense with the information, but with him as well. All for the cause of saving the presidency.

The characters are wonderfully written. One character that stood out with our staff was that of Lucky, a small-time hood with big-time connections. His compassion for Brazelton's cause, and his willingness to help, epitomized the characture of people such as this...out to make a buck and will help anyone who can help them - even if it does mean doing things on the wrong side of the law. Brazelton came to rely on Lucky, and it seemed that the dependency did go the other way as well.

There are a number of twists in the book, some could be seen and some not. However, this does not take away from the story in any way. Mr. Burton, in his quest to become an author while he still has the ability, has succeeded in every way. Clearly, he has earned the moniker of "Author". Hopefully, there will be more coming in the near future.

It may be not a book to identify raptors, but is the best to know all of the world, and having so much species, diferencing to other similar guides, it has various draws for each specie in diferent poses.

One of Two or Three Outstanding Reference Books on Raptors

There are several advantages to this encyclopedic, endlessly fascinating book.

First, it is one of the few to cover all 300+ diurnal Raptor species. Its full-color identification section provides a comprehensive guide to plumage variations in both juveniles and adults, and, where applicable --to males and females.

Second, it has great utility for lay readers as well as scholars. The descriptive text is readable with solid summary paragraphs, and an extensive bibliography.

Third, for readers shy of its 2001 copyright the book is largely up-to-date given the wholesale habitat destruction and climate change we witness today.

It is not a field guide, but for those who prefer one, I love Wheeler's Raptor guides to eastern or western species. It surely provides excellent preparatory reading for a vacation or field trip, enabling even casual readers to identify the most common species by appearance, morph/race, habitat, feeding and a wide range of behaviors.

For university students, interpretive docents and serious Raptor devotees, there is no other reference which provides as much for the price Amazon charges. While I had some minor gripes about production issues, pages are heavy and acid-free, promising a lifetime of use.

There are other comprehensive texts on diurnal Raptors, and some very competitive texts on owls by Lynch and Johnsgard; but for a home or scholarly library, there is no other work that comes close to this one.

This book is the ultimate book on all birds of prey. There is no other book that can eclipse the effort the two authors put into this book. The Helm field guide series( which this book belongs) is the most through study of any bird gruop. This book has exhausting information from description, feeding habits, to population and movements(migration habits). This book might be exspensive, but it is worth every penny. Raptors are among the most challenging bird groups to study, and this book is need to indentify them accurately. Also, if you like studying Gulls, the book "Gulls of North America, Europe, Asia" is another good book to buy. It's said that gulls are the most challenging bird groups to identify. Buy this book with this one, and you will have a less of a hard time indentifying this two of the most difficult bird groups.

To anyone looking for an inspirational book that discusses how to empower your life, Valorie Burton's "Rich Minds, Rich Rewards," is the book for you.

The book is divided into mini chapters like Count Your Blessings, Change Your Ways to Change Your Life, Listen to Your Inner Voice, Create Your Mission Statement, Write Down Your Goals, and many more.

Each mini chapter is like a talk with Burton, her self. She gets personal with examples and illustrations that lets the reader know that she is not alone, that someone has made the changes to their life, and she can too. Excersises such as the Daily Blessing book, mission statement, and vision statment help you to put your wants and desires and positive traits onto paper, so that you can begin to utilize the good things in your life and benefit from them.

I definitely plan to start a blessing book and use the suggestions that Burton's little, yet powerful book entails. Be the best person you can be, to yourself and others, and purchase this book today.

In her book, RICH MINDS, RICH REWARDS author Valorie Burton's positivity exudes from the pages! She plants reminder jewels such as "speak in a way that lifts you up" that suggest that we are beautifully and wonderfully made and no matter the situation, we should always look on the bright side of things. By believing in a favorable outcome and speaking in a positive manner, we can counteract the subconscious message that negative banter encourages. Ms. Burton reminds us that if we're expecting our circumstances to change, then we must first effectively change our habits. A wise decision made by a rich mind is one that is guided by love, peace and clarity.

She encourages the reader to not only believe in their dreams but to take the next step in making the dream a reality. The biggest failure is the lack of effort and sometimes if we do step out on faith and fail, this may be God's way of saying, "Excuse me, you're moving in the wrong direction." One of Ms. Burton's mantra is "do what you love and rewards will come." By continually stressing the power of positive thinking and fortifying the inner you with the armor needed to achieve the outward competitive advantage. Burton stresses, "whatever your mind believes will manifest itself in your outside world." Sometimes it is our "inner issues" such as fear, poor attitude, bitterness and jealousy, that limit us from being our best selves. To walk in our ultimate purpose and peacefulness, we need to make the best out of every situation, have effective communications and practice the golden rule.

In a world where "courtesy seems to be the exception versus the rule", we need to consciously seek ways in which to express love. We should learn to love unconditionally versus reactionary. Burton stresses by loving others, we in turn allow ourselves to be loved.

One of the lessons that particularly touched me is if practice makes perfect, yet we continually practice what we don't want in our lives." If you want to be less stressed, more patient, easier to get along with or more healthy, then practice being that way.

This is the first book I've read by Ms. Burton, however I definitely look forward to reading more from this author. RICH MINDS, RICH REWARDS has a message for everyone! The tone of the book is light and it flows nicely, yet the messages are profound. Simply said it's a reminder to be nice, treat others well, think happy thoughts and love what you do. If you haven't done so already, I would recommend you pick up a copy of RICH MINDS, RICH REWARDS.

Was murder victim Stephanie Bryant, 1955's Polly Klaas?

Author Harry Farrell is an excellent historian, archivist and writer whose familiarity with California's bay area shines in one of the first widely publicized kidnapping/murder of a young girl. Gone missing on her walk home from school, 14-year old Stephanie Bryant's body is found, not by law enforcement or the FBI, but by two reporters from the San Francisco Examiner.

The young girl was taken on April 28, 1955 and Burton Abbott, convicted of her murder, was put to death on March 15, 1957, less then two years after her abduction. A stark contrast to 1993's Richard Allen Davis, the convicted murderer of Polly Klaas who remains on California's death row today.

Farrell expertly sketches the climate of pre-discovery, pre-Miranda justice. He also hauntingly underwrites the conclusion that paints Abbott the killer with enough doubt that the reader is left with questions about whether justice was truly served in the 1950's.

All in all, an excellent read, leaving only picky legal buffs, like this reader, wanting more details about the intricacies of the trial.

Harry Farrell, the author of SHALLOW GRAVE IN TRINITY COUNTY, is an excellent writer. This is the first book of his I've read, and he writes it as a journalist/newspaper reporter without injecting his personal opinions, always a positive in my view. Farrell's research is exhaustive and meticulous, and the material resulting from that research is presented coherently, intelligently, and highly professionally.
SHALLOW GRAVE is the story of the kidnapping and murder in 1955 of a 14 year old girl. The book is basically formatted in three sections: the description of the crime, the police investigation, and the trial. While I often find the courtroom/trial sections of true crime books to be opportunities for uninterested writers to pad their books with filler, I can happily report that Farrell is not guilty of this. He is clearly interested enough in his book that his report of the trial is as well written as the rest of the book.
However, while almost necessarily the case, the account of the trial repeats a lot of the information reported in the section on the police investigation, as the witnesses testify as to the same info. which Farrell has already presented in the section concerning the investigation.
This can get tedious, though it is certainly not a deal-breaker. I feel that this section would work better as a series of daily newspaper reports, which of course at the time it was, rather than having it consolidated into a section of a book.
The other disappointment I felt with SHALLOW GRAVE is that, while there was some, there was not ultimately not enough discussion of of the making of the personality of the sociopath Burton Abbott. However, I believe Farrell probably did the best he could with what he had, given that the case was about 45 years old when the book was written.
Another positive I should mention is that the pictures in the book are very good, and that they - along with both Farrell's fine descriptions of the U.S. of the 1950's and his ear for the speech of the time - provide a vivid and fascinating backdrop for the book.
I will certainly be checking out other of Harry Farrell's books.

Harry Farrell's work is not only riveting, it is so well written it takes you to the time and place of the crime and its aftermath. Truly horrifying and disturbing and especially so to me as I grew up in the same general area where Stephanie Bryan was kidnapped. A lot of the landmarks and crime scenes in the book are very familiar to me as I used to work in Berkeley and drove the Tunnel Road and Ashby Avenue daily. It brought the horror home for me. The details of Stephanie's kidnap, sexual assault, and cruel, brutal, murder are heart wrenching and sad. This sweet girl was a highly intelligent honor student who avidly enjoyed reading and loved animals. I was truly aggrieved that such a beautiful human being had to die because of the despicable actions of a brutal sociopath who had no feelings or conscience. Burton Abbott's guilt is readily apparent to me and Mr. Farrell clearly and methodically illustrates this.

I read Farrell's "Swift Justice" a few years ago, and it haunted me for a long time afterward. When I came across this book, I expected that I would get just as involved with it, and I did. Farrell has a way of including details in a story that make it fascinating, even if you know the outcome (and I agree with the other reviewers who mentioned the give-away photo section). Some of the most interesting aspects of this book involve minor characters, such as the suspect who fears his co-workers' "sex vibrations", the mysterious eyewitness "Melody", and the teenage girl who became obsessed with the accused murderer. These people's own words, which Farrell diligently researched and quoted, give the reader a direct window onto the time period. The book is also full of the kind of scientific information that fans of CSI will enjoy.

[WARNING--SPOILERS FOLLOW] The kidnapping and murder described in the book are so horrible, that I was hoping for the kind of cathartic closure you might get from watching a killer convicted on TV. But Farrell doesn't let the reader off so easy. Though there was ample physical evidence pointing to Barton Abbot, a few little loose threads will leave me forever wondering. And of course, the eternal question of why anyone would commit such a crime is not answered.

As far as the victim's family goes, they are not painted as the sainted martyrs another reviewer complained about. In fact, one of the saddest aspects of the book for me was the parents' refusal to tell their other children what really happened to their sister. "We don't talk about it," the victim's mother said. Years later, her son admitted to Farrell the pain the situation caused him.

Farrell shows how notorious crimes can drag down innocent bystanders: witnesses lost their livelihoods; a mother had to move out of state and change her child's name.

All in all, Farrell has written a book that is not only a gripping true-crime story, but a valuable social history.

This book is a well written documentary of a fourteen year old girl who was abducted and murdered on her way home from school in Oakland , California in the mid 1950's. It tells of the police investigation and eventual apprehension and trial of the man believed to have been her killer.

The time, place and people in this true story all relate to my experience at that time period when I was living in Berkeley. Strange to say but even after reading the book, I don't remember reading or knowing about the event. I found the story facinating, especially the careflly related investigation and the trial. I was amazed at how the evidence was analized with the tools of the time to make a case against the suspect.

My recommendation is to read the book. It will make you think and wonder about the participants and their motives for a long time.
