Collabortively edited by Deborah Burton, Susan Vandiver Nicassio, and Agostino Ziino (all of whom are professors of music history and experts in their fields of academia), Tosca's Prism: Three Moments Of Western Cultural History is an anthology of scholarly essays by learned authors concerning the opera "La Tosca", a classic tale of love, lust, jealousy, and politics which first premiered in 1900 and draws upon the historical events succeeding the fall of the Roman republic. Contributed essays scrutinize La Tosca's impact and legacy with regard to circa 1800, circa 1900, and circa 2000. Extensive notes and music excerpts highlight the thoughtful discussions concerning La Tosca, ranging from "Who Is Tosca?" to "Tosca Act II and the Secret Identity of F#" to "The Protagonists and the Principal Phases of the Roman Republic of 1798 to 1799". This is an invaluable contribution to opera history, and most especially recommended for performing arts libraries, performers, and individual connoisseurs seeking to better understand La Tosca.

Mary Burton never fails to pull the heartstrings. Nick Baron has a bad reputation. He's a man with a mission. A bounty hunter well known for his ruthless tactics.
Ellie Watson grew up in a brothel where her mother worked as a prostitute. One night, Ellie assists at the birth of a baby. She has to flee with the baby after the mother dies. The baby's father is our villain. She ends up at a remote coaching stop. Nick finds her there. Wanting to lure the villain there to exact revenge for past wrongs.
I enjoyed this quick read. Ellie is a bit tormented but it never overpowers the story. Nick is more complex. He thinks Ellie was a prostitute (she worked in the kitchen at the brothel). The baby brings out the softer side of Nick and is an integral part of the story. Do yourself a favor and pick up this emotional book by the ever wonderful Mary Burton.

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed David's first book, "The Life and Times of Robert Flint, the Pioneer", I was actually hesitant to pick up this book. I enjoyed the first book so much, particularly the local history of upstate NY, that I was afraid I wouldn't enjoy this book as much being it was different characters and set in a different location. Well, I had nothing to worry about.

Once again, the author drew me into the story right away. These characters (the grandsons of the original characters) are every bit as charismatic as their grandfathers. Through the course of their adventure they meet many other people and one wolf.

There was no "sophomore slump" for the auther. His writing has matured since the first book, the characters are more richly developed and the plots more involved.

This book took me back to some of the great adventures I'd read as a kid. Like any good book, I was disappointed when it was finished, I wanted to go on reading about the adventures of these likeable people. David has left me eagerly looking forward to his third book, and I guarantee I will not wait to buy it this time.

A wonderful book, written with wit and intelligence about the beauty of Italian food and what is in danger of being lost to the homogeneous world of the EU. I encourage anyone to take the book with you as a guide to Italy and, if possible, to plan your trip around it. It is also a great book to give to the cook that has everything!

In his third book, the author returns to a time and place that is dear to his heart; the Mohawk Valley of upstate NY during the French and Indian War and the American Revolution.

The French and Indian War has often taken a back seat to the Revolutionary War, but it was equally important in securing the freedom of the settlers, particularly in upstate NY. In this book, we revisit the events of both wars, this time from the perspective of two likeable brothers from Virginia, Thomas and John Morrison, who settle in the small community of Stone Arabia. The book chronicles their adventures during the wars, living in the wilderness, meeting Mohawk Indians and learning from them.

The book is chock full of historical events and people who were vital in the struggle to survive the brutality of life in the Valley. We're even treated to a brief return of our old friends Robert Flint and Ben Wells from the author's first book, "The Life and Times of Robert Flint the Pioneer".

The book is a fast and fun ride and a must read for anyone interested in the history of the Mohawk Valley, the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, colonial life in general, or just a plain good adventure story. The author uses his knowledge and his love for the area and the period to bring history to life in this thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable book.
