We homeschool and love "A Reason for Spelling" books. Each week starts with a story using the words for the week. This is followed with a pretest and looking at the shape of the words as well as the phonics connection between the words. On the second day, students practice their spelling words according to their learning style (kinesthetic, aural, visual, etc.). (Spell your words with Play-dough, while bouncing a ball, or into a tape recorder). The third day deals with definitions of the words. The fourth day includes dictation and proof reading. There is an optional practice page included in the teacher's manual for those needing or wanting more practice. (Note: You MUST have the teacher's manual for these books or parts of them will be inaccessible to you). On the fifth day, a test is given. For those having a class, there is also a game presented. Throughout, there are memory verses, journaling, and review units. We highly recommend this entire series!

I've been a homeschooling mom for over 6 years now. After using Concerned Communication's A Reason For Writing since the beginning, we stumble on A Reason For Spelling this year. I was tired of "boring" spelling curriculumns, so figured we'd spend the extra $$$ and give this a try. Well, we ALL love it (we're using levels A, C and E for our 1st, 3rd and 5th graders). There is a lot of activities packed into these pages, and you can pretty much pick and choose how much of it you want to do. There are reproducibles in the teachers manuals of additional activities. I'm thinking of using it again next year with all the activities, and I should be able to turn it into our full Language Arts program. One word of warning, DON'T try to use this without the teachers manual, you will be LOST! I find the teacher's manual invaluable!

Book with information, history, photography and maps on the Manzanar National Historic Site for those who wish to learn about and visit. Never mind the haters and the lamers, an important book about an important subject and place often dismissed and ignored, which is part of American and Californian history, and any and all can benefit from visiting here if they keep an open mind and heart. This guidebook is helpful for those who travel alone or with a group. Many participated in the culmination and production of this book over time, including many of the original internees of the original Manzanar camp when it existed during wartime as well as many who were interned in other camps during World War II in the United States. Beautiful book compiled and printed on parchment with many black and white photographs and illustrations, as well as maps, histories and tours laid out to experience. I thank my good friend who is one of the chief curators of this book and member of The Manzanar Committee for the introduction to it, and for spending meaningful quality time with them there. I look forward to my next trip to Manzanar. :) 10/10

An excellent guide to the reptiles of Europe
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.

I am a soldier in the U.S. Army stationed in Kosovo for 6 months. I bought this book to try and identify any reptiles that I might encounter while serving my tour. I could not have made a better choice. The book covers all of Europe west of the Ural Mountains (including Ireland). It lists all amphibians and reptiles withing that range. The keys are very well written, and the corresponding line drawings are exellent. The book also covers many of the variations that occur withing the European lizards. I would recomend this book for the above reasons, over any book that only covers western Europe/Britain because this book also covers easter Europe, which is becoming more and more open to the west every year. This book could be a very big help to any herpetologist who is planing on travel anywhere in Europe, especially on the identification of the lacertids.

For those wishing to understand the persuasive aims of NT writers

Proceeding from the basic insight that rhetoric is not a matter of stylistic ornamentation but of persuasive argumentation, the author 1) lays out the historical factors surrounding the loss and recovery of rhetorical understanding in dealing with the New Testament, 2) describes classical Greco-Roman rhetoric; 3) applies rhetorical categories to the interpretation of a selection of New Testament texts; and 4) analyzes the place of rhetorical criticism in the configuration of critical methods and hermeneutics.

A giant among engineers.

The opening chapters of this informative book give the history of Cornwall in a nutshell:- the mining, the unforgiving coastline, the wrecks, the climate and the people. Specifically from the mining aspect, we see how the conditions lent themselves to some form of mechanised help with raising tin & copper ore and draing the shafts & tunnels. Newcomen and Watt were the first to provide the engines, but Trevithick saw how these could be improved, much to the dismay of Boulton & Watt, who kept up a litiginous fight against Trevithick for decades.
Trevithick prevailed and also saw that the static engines could be moved around by their own power to the next site, which set into motion the beginning of the railways and motor cars (little realising what this would become in 200 years!)....
This is a well-researched book, with plenty of apposite quotes and comments, but at the same time it is never dull - the story flows like well-turned novel, urging one into the next chapter. The great thing about the book is the way you are constantly kept aware of how new the technology was; and how daunting that power was to those used to the limitations of horse-power. And it reveals the impetuous yet single-minded nature of this ebullient giant who would let nothing stop him in his quest to further Cornish development.
The author opened my eyes to the unsung genius of Trevithick; we all remember Watt as the 'Father of Steam' (he actually hindered progress!) and Stevenson as the 'Inventor of the Railway Engine', but Trevithick made more technical strides - although they were quickly superseded - nontheless, it does not detract from the man's vision and tenacity in the face of opposition from the Patent law and his rivals.
