An important ethnographic work

Dr.Burton's ethnography of the Atuot-speaking peoples of the southern Sudan is an important work of modern anthropology. Taking the reins where Evans-Pritchard left off in his Sudanic fieldwork, Burton adds to the extant knowledge on this area at the same time that he opens up another Nilotic world. Reflexivity is the name of the game in this volume as Burton and his wife live with, learn from and react to the Nilotes. Never failing to provide delightful anecdotes and yet always describing his experience in exhaustive detail, Burton weaves a tapestry of culture from a part of the world that most westerners would just as soon dismiss as one big civil war. A useful tome for any Africanist's or anthropologist's library. Hopefully, it will come out in paper-back eventually, so as to be more affordable and accessible to the general interest circle.

Hattie Burton was a well known figure in Napa CA. She rode her motor scooter around town well into her 70's and was a font of historical information. Her long life, as chronicled in this book, reads as well as "The Grapes of Wrath"; relating such experiences as watching the sky glowing red from her home in Sonoma as San Francisco burned in 1906, and working three jobs at a time with only a 4 hour break in between them. Her book is currently being edited and revised by her grandson, John C. Burton, a noted collector and celebrated historian in Santa rosa CA and author of "The Pour Man's Friend": a guide for the professional bartender.

This is a great book for kids (and adults!) to learn more about Kentucky's capitol building. It contains photos and information about the Rotunda, Legislature, Senate, Governor's office, and the Kentucky Supreme Court. There are photos of visitor favorites like the floral clock, the doll display, and Lincoln's statue. It also contains information about the Old Capitol and its famous floating staircase. It has tons of interesting tidbits and a glossary at the end. The book would be a great companion to a trip to Frankfort and the Capitol. It's well written and the photos are beautiful!

Ridiculously priced item

This item is priced absolutely too high. I would encourage people to check it out at a library like I did. As for you folks who are hoping to win the lottery of this sale, I would ask that you remove your items off of Amazon which is supposed to be a place where people can find good prices on books.

I highly recommend this wonderful book on hospitality!

This is one of my favorite books. It is a WONDERFUL book on hospitality. A few years ago I ran a Ladies' Christian Book Club and tried to order copies of this book for it. I was very upset to be told it was no longer in print and none of my local Christian bookstores had any in stock. I found it "by accident" when I went to see Emilie Barnes and I was so thrilled to see that it is available again as a revised 1998 edition! I wish all women would read this book - it would make such a difference in the world!!! Please buy a copy and finish it in time for the upcoming holidays - I'm sure you'll be glad you did! In 1968 a kid in junior high school could follow Burton Hawk's recipes for making such compounds as ethanol, ethyl butyrate, thiokol rubber, bakelite, coumarin and chloral hydrate without the slightest thought of Homeland Security, ATF, or FBI taking an interest in their activities. I loved this book 40 years ago and I went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in chemistry. Kids today would probably look at it and wonder why anyone would want to do these experiments even if they could get a hold of the chemicals and equipment. Burton Hawk's Organic Chemistry for the Home Lab is relic of a bygone age of amateur science.

Mini-sized guide laden with maxi-helpful information
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

The Opera Journeys Mini Guide Series is just wonderful; it's like a "Cliff Note" of the opera, and extremely informative and educational. I particularly like the size; these guides are not cumbersome and fit right into my shirt pocket. The ladies will find sufficient room in their pocketbooks.

The story narrative with the music examples is excellent. I prefer it to a libretto; indeed, it's a much easier way to follow the essence of the story. The essay is magnificent; very well written, not pedantic, and extremely insightful and comprehensible. I congratulate Burton Fisher for a job very well done and Amazon for making these handy, information-laden booklets available. The Opera Journeys Mini Guide Series is a wonderful contribution to opera education and opera appreciation.

My tip: acquire the entire collection because you will be in easy reach of superbly presented opera guides consisting of story analysis, principal characters in the opera, story narrative with music highlights, background, analysis, and commentary.

Collecting as a Passion and an Adventure
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-03
With grace, wonder and gentle humor, Burton Berry tells the story of how he became one of the 20th century's greatest collectors.

A career diplomat, young Berry was posted to Istanbul in 1928. He soon learned nearly everyone he met collected "something." Unable to afford the beautiful rugs, jewelry and daggars found in the Grand Bazaar, Berry chose to collect old towels - at the time, considered little more than worthless rags. Despite the sneers his "finds" drew, Berry persisted, caught up in the adventure of buying, making friends and learning about an exotic foreign culure. Eventually, he developed a passion for the items he collected, and became recognized as an expert on Turkish textiles, silver, gems and bronzes.

The black and white illustrations and photos (if only they were in color!) provide clues to the "Arabian Knights" atmosphere Berry found in the Bazaar, and the treasures he discovered there. Today, his collection is housed in the Art Institute of Chicago.

When you think of a 'coffee-table' book, large and impressive, you are thinking of a book the size of this book on the equally impressive-sized watches, derived from diving watches. Simple, stunning and beautiful as the subject, this book will make you love your Panerai wristwatch even more. Here are photographs in vivid detail, beautiful shots and historical information on the brand. This is my favorite watch photography book by far!

Paradise regained

Review Date: 2006-06-29
This is a magnificent work of scholarship and faith by a self-confessed 'lapsed atheist'. In concise, vigorous prose Russell summarizes the evolution of views on heaven and God from the time of the Middle Ages to the present day. Along the way he assesses the various skeptical arguments that undermined faith in heaven and a loving God and judges them at best inconclusive and at worst incoherent. His research in philosophy, history, sociology, science, literature and theology is massive and thoroughly comprehensive, demonstrating that a case for heaven need not be built on a fundamentalist appeal to Scripture or to sentiment alone. Russell gives devastating if sketchy critiques of 'physicalism' (more like scientism in general) on one hand, and Progress (as a metaphysical belief in the gradual perfection of the human race) on the other, leaving the historical Christian tradition, informed by reason, scripture and science, as the most plausible alternative. He relies heavily on the defense of the Christian faith as developed by Alvin Plantinga in "Warranted Christian Belief" as well as Hilary Putnam's critique of physicalism in "Representation and Reality", both of whom are a good step above the usual apologetic sources. Russell does not shy away from real bones of contention and admits where advances in science and philosophy have made certain questions less straightforward as they had been, but his case for heaven emerges unscathed from his immersion in the best anti-theistic polemics this age has to offer. Christians need to read this book. Liberal theology has been too dismissive of one of the great hopes and comforts that our religion has to offer. It's time to reclaim Paradise, and Russell's book is a huge step in the right direction.
