Got this to finish a set for our grandchildren. They absoulutely love it, even the four-year-old who keeps mom busy filling his mind with more animal lore. Could not be happier with this traditional set that doesn't need a computer screen to make it work.

Great Historical Fiction

The story of Jaen (set in the English countryside in the 1700s) and various other people in her life is engaging and informative about the times. Surprisingly there are many issues that face contemporary women. For example, how to keep from getting pregnant. Jaen is forced into a marriage by getting pregnant accidentally. She must move from all that is familiar to a household full of strangers and leave her beloved sister and mother behind at a young age. She does not love her husband. She keeps getting pregnant, and having children, but she doesn't feel a lot of love for them. Her husband is abusive and gives her no credit for a brain, and she soon acquires a habit of losing herself in dreaminess, probably as an escape. The story goes on to portray how other female characters in the family clash with the social order of the time and come to terms with it.

The book offers great comparison points for girls today, who may have a negative view of what is available to them. If they'd been born a hundred or more years before, it could have been far worse in many respects.

It's not a tragic drama like a Thomas Hardy novel, but I thought it was a worthwhile read. I wasn't bored, and the characters were interesting. They all got a bit of attention, a bit of fleshing out from the writer, and they were all capable of surprising (not predictable). The story would make a great TV mini-series.

A complete, concise commentary with the convenience of a computer database. This has much improved utility over the paper books set that I am collecting. I use it every single day for Bible Study, Devotional development and sermon development.

Hold on to your hat as you roll down the sails before embarking on this seafaring adventure. Delightfully entertaining and action packed from cover to cover, this engaging tale of a youth facing pirates, ghosts, phantoms and more will have any adventure-loving reader (child or adult) wanting for more. A great series with much adventure, suspense, and action, Stephen Wren has woven all the elements perfectly for an adventure of a lifetime. Highly recommended!!!! Elementary, my dear Watson!

This was the delightful sequel to "The Game's Afoot Again". The (mis)adventures of young Watson and his android, "Sherlock Holmes," continue but this time on a mysterious island off the coast of Wisconsin, instead of in England. You don't have to be a Sherlock Holmes fan to enjoy this book BUT you will not be disappointed if you are. I highly recommend you read this as the follow up - the story will make more sense. Again, its intended audience is young adults but I, a not so young adult, found it to be an entertaining story that really captured my fancy. The characters are likeable and the concept behind the story is a clever one. I hope Mr. Burton writes another Watson/Holmes adventure someday.

No need for special schooling in order to find this book rewarding. Throckmorton writes about Jesus Christ and the Kingdom,or "Dominion" of God, using the gospels as primary source, in a way that gives increased meaning to this familiar phrase. Therefore, the book provides an excellent, much needed balance to the sometime imaginative writings that appear in Crossan and Borg et al concerning authentic words spoken by Jesus. Throckmorton writes with great clarity graced with humor, always inclusive but never obtrusive.

A MUST -READ FOR TRUE-BLUE SPIRIT-FILLED CHRISTIANS

Review Date: 2004-09-19
If you struggle in your walk with the Lord and in certain areas of your life, such as marriage, and you are seeking a solution, then read this book - it may be the key to opening the door to a new world of freedom and deliverance through spiritual warfare. Jezebel, a wicked queen in the Old Testment who was married to King Ahab (2 Kings) and a false prophetess in the New (Rev. 2) is operating today as a major power in Satan's demonic army to destroy people's lives and marriages (John 10:10 and I Peter 5:8). If you don't want to be destroyed, then you need Jezebel and her entire network of demons cast out of you and curses broken. (Many good Christians, through erroneous and politically-correct denominational church doctrine, have been taught either that demons do not exist, or if they do, they cannot inhabit Christians - however, they can and they do, not in their born-again spirit, but in their soul and body.) The areas in which Jezebel and her network operates (primarily in women, but also in homosexual men) are Sexual Impurity; Pride; Selfishness; Control; Witchcraft; Criticism; Jealousy; Rebellion; Competition; Retaliation; Marriage-breaking; and Child Abuse. In men, the spirit of Ahab operates in Passivity; Fear; Irresponsibility; Weakness; and Sexual Impurity. The Word says, "My people perish for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you..." (Hosea 4:6). Now that you have read this review, you may have some knowledge you didn't have before, so don't reject it, don't perish. Read this book, see if it lines up with the Word of God, and then allow your spiritual paradigms to be changed and your wrong church teaching to be replaced with Spirits of Wisdom, Understanding and Knowledge (Isaiah 11:2). Buy this book today.

An Agnostic Gospell

The word Kasidah can be translated Testament, and here it conveys several of the meanings of that word. It is a statement about what the author believes and what he does not, it is concerned with the authority and veracity of scriptures, and it is deeply concerned with the meaning and consequences of death.
Burton here melds his broad knowledge of Western philosophy and religion with a deep understanding of Eastern philosophical and metaphysical thought, and he presents it flawlessly in the poetic idiom of the Sufis. This work stands alone, incomparable, for it is truly a unique work of genius. The Way of the Sufi is here presented in Western thought, clothed in poetic Sufi garb.
The Kasidah is an Agnostic Gospel. It calls for an abandonment of argument over what can never be known an acceptance that death is a mystery that we cannot penetrate, and a shunning of bribes of heaven or threats of hell. Burton offers instead his code for living the life before us - "Do what thy manhood bids thee do/ from none but self expect applause;/ He noblest lives and noblest dies/ who makes and keeps his self-made laws."
The Kasidah expresses Burton's life philosophy, stark, with a terrible beauty. It has been called his spiritual autobiography. More than any of his many other works, it reveals the heart and mind of this brilliant and amazing man. That is more than enough reason to read this powerful book.
This book should be read by anyone with an interest in Sir Richard Burton, Sufi poetry, the philosophy of applied Agnosticism, or works of unique and powerful vision. It has my highest recommendation
