Holmes' essay is fantastic and would be a great read prior to or following any trip to Egypt. The similarities 100 years since is amazing. The changes are intriguing. I read a library version of this book but decided to buy it for myself for reference and for the great collection of photos. The introductory essays were helpful to understand the Holmes' role in American history.

A growing population, mental illness, less tolerance for crime and feelings of desperation and despair are reasons why elderly people are committing more violent crimes, according to the book. Little research has been done about the topics addressed by a several contributors to the book. Each contributor, an expert on his or her topic of choice, took a massive amount of information and boiled it down to easy to understand statistics. They also included helpful charts.

Two stand-out chapters are Elders as Perpetrators by Edith Elisabeth Flynn and The Older Prisoner: Social, Psychological, and Medical Considerations by John J. Kerbs. Flynn said elder crime has become a major concern for policy-makers. Although violent crime by older people is on the rise, Flynn cautioned that overall arrests for that age group are down. Most elders are law-abiding, she said. As such, elders are best viewed as a stabilizing force in society and not as an emerging, new problem on the horizon of criminal justice. She adds, Though numerically small, some elders do engage in crime and violence and are quite capable of inflicting serious losses and harm. Kerbs says most of the country's older prisoners are not getting proper medical, psychological and social care. He says the older prisoner's physical, psychological and social needs are complex, and require health workers who understand those needs. Most prisons, he said, aren't equipped to provide that type of care. The editors, Max B. Rothman, Burton D. Dunlop and Pamela Entzel, choose well when selecting authors.

This book is the peak of Higley and Burton's long-time "elite theory", which basically argues that the political elites of 'liberal democracies' come together and 'principally agree to not act on principle'.

This act allows for the status quo to mainly stay intact, which allows both left and right to stay in positions of power and governments to remain relatively stable.

This book abounds with examples, mainly being separated by colonial and non-colonial nations and the variances of the 'elite theory' that occurs in each.

Do not fear, this book is not written by ideologues. The book contains a non-partisan theory of rule and governance without passing judgement on either left or right wing rulings. It will leave you with a much more appreciative viewpoint on the subtleness and cleverness of Democracy.

This book is an excellent reference for a timely topic. With procedural sedation fast becoming the standard of care and pain control an often overlooked issue in the emergency department, this work provides succinct and current information. I found the text thorough and informative and the illustrations quite useful. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to improve the quality of patient care with respect to pain management and procedural sedation.

This book is wonderful, especially for the beginning or intermediate flower painting artist. It has lots of excellent illustrations. It really helped me learn to draw and "paint" a wide variety of flowers.

In the beginning chapter it teaches you about choosing a workspace, tools, & paper. Color theory, light & shade are also covered. Various mediums are then discussed including color pencil, acrylics, watercolor, oil & pastels.

It then covers how to care for the flowers, flower arrangement, and using photos. Next, it discusses the different shapes of flowers & how to draw them. Many flowers are then painted step-by-step, shown in various mediums.

Finally, the drawing and painting of leaves and foliage is shown. There is a small, but beautiful gallery in the back of the book.

This book is adapted from Purnell's Encyclopedia of Animal Life (pub. in the USA as "International Wild Life"). 252 pages, weighing a hefty 3-1/4 lb. Top rate color photography throughout. A fascinating book.

This book is outstanding and the stories in it are exceptional. The students love the stories also...especially the Lady or the Tiger....Thank you.

The book has it's pros and cons. It is great because it lists all of the different escape attempts by allied POW's during the war, but the only downside is that each story is some what short. Each story averages between 15 to 20 pages. It is still a nice book that gives you a nice overview of the escape attempts though.

I first heard this given as a general conference talk and felt the wonderful spirit of eternal marriage as so well captured in this parable of silverware. This is a must read for couples about to get married or recently married. I highly recommend it to everyone and to refresh your perspective and opinion of marriage in a time when the public's view of the value of marriage becomes less and less.
