The area of Mexico covered by Mr. Burton's book is filled with historical, cultural and geographical/geological riches. The
problem for me as a resident of this area has been where to find them, and where to learn about them, once you have heard
about them. This book has been a god-send as it has allowed us to learn and explore our "neighbourhood" with confidence and
always rewarding experiences. If you are interested in more than beach, babes, and beer, then this is a wonderful book to
use, or just to read, learn and dream. It is truly a "Mexico" book.

British born Tony Burton is a long time resident of Mexico and an award winning travel writer and naturalist. He has collected
and updated the best of his writings over the years into a what is a unique guidebook to western Mexico. Based on his
frequent travels and intimate knowledge of the region, Tony offers his special insights into this scenic and culturally
rich area of lakes and mountains, colonial towns and Indian villages. From San Blas on the Pacific coast to the celebrated
Monarch butterfly refuge in the high Sierra of Michoacan, the author takes us to all of his favorite places along the less
traveled roads of the region, revealing their history, ecology and archaeology, as well as their arts, crafts and folklore.
I found the book to be especially valuable for his keen observations on, and enthusiasm for the varied natural wonders of
western Mexico. Charmingly illustrated by artist Mark Eager, Tony's guide is easy on the eye, It is well organized, packed
with suggestions for the traveler, with suggested itineraries and detailed maps. A full bibliography and index is also
appended.

This was a wonderful little book and like many other Japanese novels such as Junichiro Tanizaki's The Makioka Sisters very
litle seems to actually happen. The thing it alot does happen One just has to search for the happenings in the elegent words
of Mori Ogai. At first it seems that the main character of the book is the Narrator's best friend Okada who is a wel liked
medical student. we soon learn that Okada has been noticed by and is noticing a beautiful woman named Otama who is in fact
a mistress of Suezo a money lender. The main character, however, seems to be Otama. We see her gpoo through evert day trying
to figure out how to talk the man she loves. It is pretty much that simple, but the reader is deeply affected by this book.

Zero Reciprocity

One small incident CAN be made into an entire novel, as Ogai Mori shows us here. The actual action in The Wild Goose is quite
small, even insignificant. But the way Ogai informs us of every thought of every character more than makes up for it. What
I found to be truly compelling was the point of view -- the narrator is the best friend of Okada, one of the main characters.
Just when it appears that the narrator knows way too much about what Otama (the girl) was thinking, he goes and leaves us
with a mystery at the end that brings about what I thought was excellent closure. I would say that the main theme of this
novel is "zero reciprocity" -- those of the characters who are in love are never truly loved back, like Otama, who silently
longs for Okada, or even Suezo, the man who has taken Otama for his mistress. In this novel, people lie, people cheat,
people hide the truth. And people never say what they truly feel. Just like real life. An excellent story.

This is lovely book with stunning pictures. Seattlites will enjoy the sense of awe that is at the same time familiar and
other will be able to explore these beautiful wetlands for the first time.
Photos of birds, berries and bark all bring to our attention the wonder in the small parts of nature that are so often overlooked. At the same time misty waterscapes show the full grandure of the Washington Park Arboretum.

I bought this book for my 12-year-old son as some "bridge" learning for summer vacation. The "high school" part of the title
intrigued him from the start. He enjoys the succinct definitions and relevant, humorous examples of useage. Over the summer
he has picked up nearly 200 words and is eager to continue.

This is an excellent work for teaching global history with a multi-cultural component. The contents are easy to read and understand.
The author supplemented the text with a website for use by students. Each chapter has extensive question sets to help students
learn the material. This rendition would be very helpful for the New York State Regents in Global History and Geography. The
contents are replete with many full color diagrams and historical portraits. The work covers everything from ancient Chinese
dynasties to the more modern Indian cultures of the Americas. The acquisition is a bit pricey at $100+ ; however, the text
has a high resale value, if kept in good condition.

This fascinating homage to man-made monuments and natural features covers the seven continents in exquisite detail. The table
of contents lists the continents and what can be found within this book. Also the contents includes a map with corresponding
numbers related to the site and where the written content and pictures can be found. For example, Niagara Falls is number
66, with a numbered spot on the map . Than the contents tells you what page to find the information on . Each wonder is given
a two page spread for ease of viewing where details are given along with smaller pictures and more information; the result
is eye pleasing well organized information. This book can be used by middle school to high school age children but is also
good for adults who might want to take that virtual trip to lands and places far away. Herein you will find the most unusual
and remarkable wonders of the world. Some of the biggest natural and man-made monuments and oldest edifices of the past will
astound you with their beauty and in many cases longevity. The lavishly illustrated and photographed beauties of the natural
and man-made world will reveal the richness and variety of the world. There is also a special section entitled "Great Civilizations."
Here's a few of the diverse places included in this book: The River Nile, the Linclon Memorial, Redwoods and Giant Sequoias,
Ayutthaya, The Alhambra, The Colosseum, The Temple of Karnak, Madagascar, Teotihuacan, Tikal, Iguaca Falls, The Inca Trail,
Mount Erebus, Easter Island,, The Forbidden City, Mount Figi,The Empire State Building, The Blue Mosque and The Matterhorn(not
Disneyland:)to name a few. It really is a book for all ages and for anyone who wants to explore the world in which they live
but may never get to see in person. It is a good jump start for students who need to write a paper to begin their initial
research with. The initial information found in this book may serve as a stimulus for further research. Recommended for school
and community libraries.
