Chapalle made me realize that no matter how tough life is we can be happy. His step-by-step method is easy to understand, seems fun to accomplish, and can be reitterated over and over again. I am anxious to work on the "30 ways in 30 days" idea and have almost talked my husband into trying these ideas as well.
Thanks for this great read! I recommend this book to everyone.
Everyone Can Benefit from this bookReview Date: 2008-09-08
This book is different from any book I've read before. Not only is the book fun to read, but it gives an action plan, with exercises, at the end. I finished it in less than one week and it usually takes me at least a month to finish books! I just couldn't put it down.
Not only does the author invite readers in to share very personal parts of his life, he explains, in a reader friendly fashion, what emotional state he was in and the decisions that he CHOSE to make. Covering issues such as dealing with the loss of loved ones, career choices and changes, money and financial struggles, love (the good and the bad), and success and failure, this book makes the average, everyday person know that they are not alone. You will find yourself laughing, then crying, then laughing again!
I now use the action steps given in the book and it has made me more appreciative of everything and everyone in my life. So I encourage every invest in your happiness. Choose this book... and choose happiness now!
An uplifting, inspring, positive bookReview Date: 2008-08-25
I love how well the book is written and how easily the content seemed to come to the author. This is one book that I will be passing around to my fellow book readers, as I'm sure anyone can benefit from what they'll learn.

I just flip open a page and study how he pulls it off, great painting that is.
I have not read the whole book, just little bits here and there.
But I sure have looked at all the pretty pictures and so should any one who likes B. Silvermans work.

My fingers wiggle when seeing the drawings. My nerve cells tingle trying to process/digest/analyze color combinations in the paintings, and half of me trying to get off the chair and get to the easel to "mix 'em colors".
Some body, catch me! I am falling... in love.

Would like to see an updated versionReview Date: 2006-04-23
I like that it has so much information all in one place, however much of the information in this book can be found on the internet (although with A LOT more work). This book gave me a much appreciated focus to my cancer research.
There are breakthoughs that the book does not cover (for example fungal infection) and it was written when the understanding of prions (the cause of mad cow disease for example)and their role in health risk was only beginning.
Would like to see a more updated version, almost 10 years old, a more recent version could only be better.
Invaluable wealth of info!Review Date: 2002-06-20
Don't miss the AMAS test on pages 702-705: an accurate blood test that can detect ANY cancer up to 19 months BEFORE conventional medical tests for cancer can find it! This test gave me GREAT PEACE of MIND as it ruled OUT cancer for me before my surgery to remove a grapefruit-sized endometrioma (NON-malignant). Praise the LORD!

This book has become my Bible and has literaly saved my life. Im sitting here tonight in the wee hours of the night to let you know that today I have no turmors and am living cancer free. Five months ago I have 4 tumors all at approx 4cm each, today they are all gone, by the grace of God and his direction led me to this book which in turn gave me the information, the wisdom and guaidence to get through this tragic disease that so many people, possibly thousands world wide die from.
God Bless the all those who contributed to the truth about cancer. I thank you.

To the reader who was confused about "glue," it represents any safe place. Odysseus had the same type of place in Homer's "The Odyssey..." Ithaca was what HE called it, did it confuse you that it wasn't named after a real place? Before you talk about how much of a horrible waste of time a book is to read, why not make sure you're not being narrow-minded? Perhaps when Ellen spoke of playing tag and being safe at glue, it should have meant something to you. Did you ever play tag? In fact, if you do a search for "glue" within this book, it usually is listed together with a derivative of the word "safe."
You have to read this book as if it's an autobiorgraphy told through dialogues with Clarissa... Not as if it was fiction. The book is so incredibly realistic that if you read it any other way, you're missing the point.
Great book... Would recommend it to anyone.
Deep, really deep.Review Date: 2002-07-20
Ellen's story is a familar story, of the girl left behind. Hers is a story of physical, mental, and sexual abuse, that trancends the ordinary dysfunctional family. This unique tale is told in the voice of a girl whose voice has been muted to nearly everyone except her imaginary friend Clarissa. Even through the midst of angst and lonliness, Ellen story is vivid, uplifting, and somewhat humerous at times.
Burton's done a wonderful thing in this story. She let us peep into the lives of an extraordinary, reluctant, heroine. Her imagery and symbolism is reminiscent of Alice Walker.
If you want a book to read that's thoughtful, extremely well written, and even mystical, then this book will not dissapoint.

The Film
The first part of the book focuses on the story ans the lyrics of the movie songs, beautifully illustrated with pictures from the movie, designs and Burton's sketches. Some movie facts are also given in this part of the book.
The Art
The original poem by Burton in which the movie is based on is presented in the firt part of the section. Most of Burton's sketches and character designs are here. The design of the sets, the characters and storyboards are well explained and presented in this section of the book with beautiful pictures, colored sketches and original drawings by Tim.
The Vision
In this section we get to meet all the people involved in making this film possible, and a little background on her profiles and how they were selected to partake on this project. Tim Burton, Henry Selick, Danny Elfman, Caroline Thompson, Kathleen Gavin and Denise Di Novi participate with comments and thought about the project.

Great behind the scenesReview Date: 2008-08-09
The book's divided into 3 parts:
Part 1 - Land of the Living
Part 2 - Land of the Dead
Part 3 - Going Upstairs, The Illustrated Story
You know those behind the scenes videos from movie DVDs? This book is essentially that, except in written form.
Part 1 talks about how the story was conceived, the people involved in making the movie, project development, and the challenges to handling stop motion animation. There's a lot on character design, especially the back stories that determine who they are, and how they were created physically. There are very interesting details you'll learn in the creation process. Below's a quote on controlling facial movements:
"By inserting an Allen wrench into a socket in the ears of the puppets, the animators could control various facial movements. If you put the key into the left ear and turn it in one direction, it would make the puppet smile on the left-side of the face; if you turned it the other way it would make the corner of the mouth on that side of the face droop down, giving the puppet a slightly sad expression, and vice versa on the other side."
Part 2 is about designing the movie set. It talks about the design influences on the buildings and how the sets were designed in order to facilitate shooting. There are write ups on the voice casts, animators and the music. Interesting to note is that the movie was shot using a digital SLR. A quote on the living and dead set:
"Both thematically and visually, Corpse Bride is about inversion, with the Land of the Living a gray, dead place where people are lifeless, hopeless and sad, while the Land of the Dead is full of vivacious dead people with a lust for life and joy."
On animators:
"Some will act out before the shot, others will videotape themselves and try and piece together a performance that way. Some animators sort of just go for it and sort of feel it."
Part 3 is the storyboard of the movie. This part is filled with the script, penciled storyboards and movie stills.

I give this book a 5 because of the guitar chords which are systematically drawn each time they occur. It wasn't expected, especially as we're dealing with a piano vocal song book, so: 2 thumbs up=5 stars !

perfect book for the working artistReview Date: 2007-01-30
much better than the usual 'how-to' or one of those coffee table art books which either focus solely on technique or just present the images - here is a rare book which shows beautiful images and also reveals the decisions involved in creating them...(there is a book of interviews with Wyeth which is similar)...like having a heart to heart with a master painter...this is a real chance to hear and reflect on issues we all face as we draw and paint.
Interesting with reservationsReview Date: 2007-01-22
But alas, the drawings are basically rough sketches of life studies. Nothing is finish. If you enjoy seeing unfinished work that emphasizes style and impression more than realism and technical skill, this is your book. But I honestly expected something more. The book is very pricey but the content is not all that well executed, IMHO. But it's worth a look if you are a serious draftsman in training.
