Sir Richard Francis Burton was explorer, spy, diplomatic, scientific (he founded the Antropological Association in London) and writer, author of more than fifty books. In 1868 he was three years in San Pablo (Brazil) as a consul, where he decided to visit the battlefields of Paraguay and to give to his compatriots a first hand vision of the war. He made two trips, in 1868 and 1869, then he integrated them in a series of letters, published in 1869. Nevertheless, Burton was not in the battlefields: he visited Humaitá and Asunción (Paraguay), Montevideo and Paysandú (Uruguay), Corrientes, Rosario and Buenos Aires (Argentina). As in previous cases (the trips to Medina and Mecca) it offers numerous confrontantions obtained of the reading of all books available of previous travellers and their own direct vision. In this book brings a overview of the countries visited, from the political aspects to precise details (e.g. on costumes, buildings or feeding, as the Argentine "asado" and many others), consolidating a precise description of the Rio de La Plata in the nineteenth century.

This postcard collection is exactly what I was looking for after reading "Why Cats Paint," by the same authors. The paintings are unbelievable. Most of these cats paint better than I could ever wish to. I alternate between dropping my jaw, gasping in awe, and laughing out loud whenever I read the critics' descriptions of the paintings. A painting by a cat is an amazing sight to behold, especially once you realize that, yes, there is meaning behind it and, yes, it does qualify as art.

I'm never going to mail these postcards. I need them for daily inspiration. They remind me why I love my cat -- because it is an amazing creature.

Brilliant!

The team of Heather Busch and Burton Silver has done it again! I have loved their book "Why Cats Paint" for years, and had to buy "Cat Artists and Their Work". What I didn't fully understand when I bought the book, is that this is actually a book of postcards that can be removed and mailed. The book is so beautiful, and the commentary on the art is so sublime that I couldn't bring myself to tear the cards out and thus destroy the book. So, I bought a second copy of the book because the postcards are absolutely wonderful, and are great for special notes to the cat lovers in your life.

I hope to see more work from Busch and Silver in the future, as they are able like few others to capture the intellect and simultaneous silliness of our feline friends in captivating photographs and wonderful, warm commentary.

This is an awesome book! You get 17 chapters including: the anatomy of a choke, choke vs crank, air choke vs blood choke, multiple attackers, advanced chokes, training with equipment etc... Besides the 65 chokes demonstrated, you also get to learn over 50 ways to get to the back of an opponent! 239 pages with hundreds of photos. No matter what your style, you can incorporate chokes in to your "bag of tricks". This can only help you! As a female who is 5.3 and 120 pounds, my chances of knocking out a big guy who is attacking me are pretty slim but I certainly have a higher chance of getting to that person's back and choking them out no matter how big they are. This book is giving me all the details I need to get it done better and faster and get back home safely. And since I'm hoping I'll never have to use the stuff in the streets, I can still enjoy taping out my training partners! :-)

This is one of the best Christmas books ever written. Granted, I'm a little biased--Mutt was my cousin, but I love this book regardless. I read it every Christmas--and am a bonafide member of the Worldwide Twelve Nights Society (read the book and you'll get it!) Buy this book--it's great!! :)

This book gives a wonderful account of an old fashioned Christmas. Though it is told from Mr. Burton's own experiences, the stories give room to remember your own times of joy. It gives you inspiration to give those memories to the new generations that have joined your family.

Clinical skills exams, such as OSCEs, are a daunting but essential component of medical undergraduate education.

To prepare for these exams, our generation of medical students had to pull together vast amounts of information from maladapted resources. This tedious and time-consuming process can now be avoided, as all this information has been compiled into this one, handy book.

Indeed, this book covers all the clinical skills that are likely to be tested during the clinical years of a medical course. Although it aims to be comprehensive and detailed, its primary purpose is to be easy to read and to the point. Clinical Skills for OSCEs does not attempt to teach its reader medicine or surgery, but rather gathers and organises a large amount of information and presents it in a structured and memorable fashion.

We hope you find Clinical Skills for OSCEs useful both for your revision and for the consolidation of skills learnt at the patient's bedside.

Cole McGuire needed a good reason to return to White Stone, Colorado.
In 1882 Cole received a letter from Lily dated 1879 telling him that he was to become a father. Suprising news from his former mistress. But he knew that she would not lie to him.
For some reason the whole town seemed to be hiding the true story of what happened to Lily and his son.
He is told that Lily and her baby died in childbirth.
He approaches Mrs. Curtis Taylor, the lady that wrote the letter for Lily, hoping to find out the truth about his child.
Rebecca is being courted by the sheriff who causes some trouble and tries to keep Cole from seeing her.
Rebecca's heart stopped when Cole rode back into town and she wished more and more for a love she'd never had.
But would Cole ever forgive her for hiding the truth -- that the son she claimed as her own was the child he'd been searching for?
This book is highly recommended -- you will really enjoy it.

The least populated state - Wyoming
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-30
An excellent, balance guide of the entire state. The author finds equal pleasure in exploring the flat, high prairies of the northeastern section of the state, as well as the "signature" tourist attractions of Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons in the northwestern portion. The book contains sufficient pictures to truly inspire, and more than sufficient dollops of history. He wisely brings a fair degree of skepticism to various "historical events," mindful that the victors are the ones who write it.

He also has a passion for the natural beauty of the landscape, and even urges the reader to drive roads in a certain direction for maximum impact. The towns are equally described, from those worth a visit for retaining their "this is the way America was" character to those whose homogenized American sprawl of fast food joints should be passed through as quickly as possible.

The guide also contains much practical information, and I hope that the upcoming Fifth edition references websites more, in terms of those which provide the best, updated information.

I'll be in Wyoming for nine days this summer, and have planned the entire trip based on this guide. Thanks for the good work, Mr. Burt.

An excellent translation of this living classic

Review Date: 2008-09-17
I have several versions of this classic work, and was very refreshed by this excellent translation (you almost forget the number of centuries between the author and now as you read). Augustine's love for the psalms shines through very nicely here. If you do not know the work, do not dismiss it as "confessions of sins" -- it is the emotive chronicle of a cultured man finding God through Christ and His Word. A stunning story, with so much food for thought -- and answers to some of life's most common questions. This volume is worth a dumpster of modern best-selling tomes.

Very deep and laborious reading, but well worth it

St. Augustine was the first, and is arguably the most influential, of the major Christian apologists. In a time when Christianity was gaining momentum in the Roman Empire but was still mostly confined to the poor and uneducated, Augustine's theological treatises and apology made Christianity more valid, and in many cases more acceptable, to the learned in Rome. This autobiography, detailing Augustine's early life with a special emphasis on what made him convert to Christianity, made a tremendous contribution to the work of the sect.

Augustine deals with several topics in this book. He explores why we sin, how it affects God, and how He tries to win us back. He discusses learning and the effect of worldly wisdom and human interpretation of divine will, and attempts to reconcile earthly learning to spiritual growth. In the last three books he discusses time and creation with God. This is definitely heavy reading, but while Augustine's argument is very detailed and is sometimes difficult to comprehend, it is not poorly organized. For the most part the narrative is smooth, though the last three books do lag a little bit compared with the rest of the work.

Augustine's work has endured for more than a millennium and a half. Christianity has evolved, and has branched into many different and often opposing factions, but Augustine's work and his message still carry the great weight that they did over 1500 years ago.

"Director's Monthly," the official newsletter of The National Association of Corporate Directors, Vol. 21, No. 11, November 1997 says ... "CREATING AND SUSTAINING COMPANY GROWTH, by James B. Hangstefer (Waltham, MA: Burton-Merrill, 1997) promises a 'strategy for delivering concurrentgrowth in value to the key stakeholders of any company: customers, employees, and shareholders' --and delivers in spades. The author, who has run companies and served on a variety of company boards, offers a comprehensive set of managementand oversight tools organized around the concept of MOMENTUM. With practical tools such as a boards 'instrument panel,' Hangstefer lays out theresponsibilities of management versus the board, and shows how both can work together to achieve viable growth. As Dr. Rohsenow, Professor Emeritus, MIT said on book's jacket...if you're in business and have time to read only one book, make it this one. He couldn't have been more on target. Book is a 9 out of 10 on business-book scale and a 10 on capturing a central thesis we in business instinctively know, i.e., the importance momentum plays in a company. Content explores how to measure it, build it, implement strategies to maintanin it, all toward assuring consistent company growth. Book lays out in easy-to-understand terms the important non-financial standards to use as measures to go along with traditional financial standards to produce corporate growth consistently. This book is informative for the business executive who knows his company is doing well and is mandatory for the executive whose company is not doing as well as hoped for. Book shows how to go about bringing constructive change painlessly. A fresh and provocative read.

I picked this book up years ago and of the some 50 cookbooks I own, this is the one I keep coming back to. If you've ever been to the Big Easy and indulged in New Orleans cuisine, you will find this book scrumptious. The recipes are typical Creole and Cajun French and simple. Corrinne's biscuits are a delight! You'll feast in culinary delights if you master these recipes of the Master Chefs of Nawlins, darlin'. If you buy this book, buy a scale. Good luck and Bon Appetite!
