Meet the real creative power within which you live

If, on the one hand, you are tired of the pap being dispensed by the world's religions and are beginning to more than suspect that man made God in his own image, but on the other hand, you are awe-struck by the raw power and beauty of Nature and the Universe, then this just might be the book for you. My only regret is that I waited until age 62 to discover this gem. With humor, insight, and a firm grounding in science, John Burroughs gives us all reason to rejoice in the wonder of Nature and our rightful place in it.

Burroughs at his best!
Helpful Votes: 22 out of 22 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-08
This is the anthology readers and scholars of John Burroughs (1837-1921) have been waiting for. Charlotte Walker, a professor of English at the State University of New York at Oneonta, has gathered selections from Burroughs's vast oeuvre and assembled them in a handsome volume. The words are set in modern type, and the subject matter is as fresh and timely as ever. Burroughs is often remembered as a naturalist, but he was much more than that: a perceptive and accessible literary critic, a philosopher, a radical thinker who advocated the overthrow of traditional religions in favor of an open-eyed nature worship steeped in science and wonder. Earlier anthologies of Burroughs's work have tended to ignore or suppress his thorny and provocative side, but Walker gives us the man in all his dimensions. As the author of a concise biography of Burroughs, I was pleased to open this collection and find it crowded with favorites---philosophical essays such as "Faith of a Naturalist," travel pieces such as "A Hunt for the Nightingale," an excerpt from "Our Rural Divinity" (about the dairy cow!), perceptive criticism of Emerson and Thoreau, studies of Catskill farm life, and more. This book makes a fine addition to any library and offers the best intorduction to Burroughs in print. Bravo! Highly recommended!

The ultimate fantasy exploration and adventure series
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-24
Though considered "dated" now by many, this science fiction series by the creator of Tarzan was always one of my favorites. Of course you have to suspend belief in certain scientific and geographical principles to enjoy them, but you are more than rewarded by the nonstop action and high adventure. If you ever yearned to explore a strange new world of marvels and monsters, then this is the series for you.

This particular collection republishes three of the seven volumes in the series- including _At the Earth's Core_ which was the first. Pellucidar, in case you are new, is a subterranian world on the inner surface of the earth's crust. This world can be accessed by either drilling through the the crust or by natural openings at the poles. Burroughs inhabited this world with a rich variety of marvels almost around ever corner. These stories are a nonstop collection of survival, exploration, and empire building in strange and savage lands.

If you enjoy this collection then you'll also want to track down _Tarzan at the Earth's Core_ where ERB sends his greatest character into his greatest setting.

These books are especially good for escaping from the dissappointments and frustrations of daily life. I once locked myself in my apartment for over a week in grad school and read back through the whole series....

Ah, Sunflower Sutra!

Review Date: 2007-10-02
This slim volume of short essays is a real find, a valuable addition to the growing shelf of Beat literature. The author takes a modest, self-effacing, very personal approach to the sprawling concept of Beat spirituality, and he's all the more convincing for it. Clearly he admires the Beats & has taken much from their work, but he's never fawning or blindly uncritical. Whether delving into a single poem, such as his chapter on Ginsberg's "Sunflower Sutra," or examining an entire body of writing, such as William Burroughs' unflinching, soul-searing work, he raises compelling questions for the reader to ponder. This isn't a final word, but a starting point, inviting each of us to go further into the subject. Anyone who's been moved by the work & lives of the Beats will be pleased with this fine introductory book. Highly recommended!

What an excellent addition to the adult education literature
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-07
Drago-Severson furthers our understanding of the potential for adults to learn and grow in her groundbreaking work, Becoming Adult Learners (Teachers College Press, 2004). Through case examples, Drago-Severson demonstrates how adults from diverse backgrounds experienced learning in a workplace education program and the ways in which their educational experiences helped them to learn and grow. Viewing their experiences through a constructive-developmental lens, Drago-Severson shows the power of adult education as a transformative tool in adults' lives. Drago-Severson's expertise in employing research methods and Kegan's constructive-developmental theory to shed light on an important facet of adult education--which includes not only learning but development and growth-will be most helpful to adult educators. Becoming Adult Learners is a significant contribution to the field of adult education. The practical suggestions and tools offered will help adult educators, researchers, and policymakers to respond to adult learners' strengths and learning needs. Drago-Severson's ideas and tools provided in Becoming Adult Learners have helped me tremendously in my own practice and research.

A Flawless Collection of Essays
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-29
Billy Watson's Croker Sack is candid and clear and Mr. Burroughs himself is an expert in syntax. The tales are honest and human without being sentimental. This is the type of book you listen to carefully, sounding out words, hearing them together. The style is self-effacing in some ways - I reread sentences, surprised the second time by their beauty, but more surprised that I didn't notice them as much the first time, the prose is so natural. And this is, perhaps, the best quality of the collection - that it so naturally evokes eloquence. I recommend this collection to anyone fascinated by words and sentences, but more to those seeking well-told yarns about the things that make us most human.

Eric Howley did a nice collection of black and white, full page illustrations of ERB's monsters and imaginary beings. Good encyclopaedia text by David Day. It's a shame that this is such a rare book. A treat for Burroughs collectors.
