Way back when this was released it completely changed my life. In later life I think I have a broader perspective, but it's
still in my pantheon. I enjoyed re-reading these interviews while listening to the extensive FREE interviews with Throbbing
Gristle available at the SavageRepublic and Mobilization places. It tells the story of a time that is gone now, as it was
decaying.

The W.S. Burroughs photo in this issue was the late Dr. Timothy's favorite of Bill Burroughs--the great one with the gun in
his hand. This alone is worth the price. Great photo, especially with the interview of Burroughs and the part about the murder
of wife Joan in Mexico City. "There are no accidents" Burroughs liked to say all the rest of his life, after the 'accidental'
shooting of Joan.

Evolution all over again

It amazes me how Burroughs could change the scenes of his stories in so many ways, without changing the story itself.
This time, the mysterious and unexplored land is the inner surface of a hollow Earth. David Innes reaches it via an ill-explained "prospector," created in secret by super-scientist Perry. This digging machine is to soil what a submarine is to water, so off they go on the first trial of the machine and its super-motor. They go way off, farther than they ever imagined.
Pellucidar, that planet-within-a-planet, hosts Innes's adventure for the next decade. Its nightless sky illuminates a world apparently undergoing the same evolution seen on the surface, nearly in lock-step, but with eras crossing each other in merry abandon. That gives plenty of time for bronto-riding cavemen, hulking and hirsuit half-men, pterodactyls, and fiendishly intelligent dinosaurians - the anthropophagi obligatory in a tale of this type. And, as is the ERBish habit, there's a damsel in distress, a baffling romance thwarted by chivalric misunderstandings, and the sneaking traitor, kept close at hand for those frequent moments when a dramatic act of treachery needed to take the place of logical progression. And yes, the super-scientific explorers end up fighting with swords.
If this were a movie, it would call out for a rainy Saturday and a bucket of popcorn. If you just want a swashbuckler, long on derring-do and short on reasons for doing it, you've come to the right place. Tarzan's creator consistently fulfills every expectation, as long as it's se low enough.

A very short review is not necessarily a bad review. I hope you find something useful. So here it goes:
Treat yourself and get lost in an Edgar Rice Burroughs' book. This edition of "At the Earth's Core," a Tarzan-like adventure at the center of the earth, is remarkable for its wonderful cover, by Roy Krenkel, Jr.
Ah, what a world Burroughs created and beautifully illustrated by Krenkel. I bought the book for the illustration, and it was many years before I read the wonderful story.
For a 1930's adventure in Africa, read "Cry Wolf" (an Indiana Jones type of adventure in Ethiopia), by Wilbur Smith.
Cry Wolf
Another is "The Sapphirer Sea" (a modern adventure on Zanzibar), by Robinson The Sapphire Sea

Leonaur Ltd. is publishing the definitive Edgar Rice Burroughs 21st century editions. These usually contain 2 books of the
different ERB major series in order - thus far John Carter, Pellucidar, and Carson of Venus. In the future, possibly Tarzan!
These books are handsome and my rating is mainly based on this - the ERB fan knows best about the rest of it.
This volume presents the first 2 Carson of Venus novels. Not as good as the other 3 major ERB series but still fun. And this Leonaru Limited editions are a must buy!

The stories contained in this book are from the early days of science fiction/fantasy. The are delightful and entertaining
to read. I particularly noticed the use of the racial descriptions from that time frame in the description of the humans encounterd.
And the obvious heavey influence of Darwin and The Origin of Species on the writer. I very enjoyable "G" rated book, if a
little dated.

The 3 novels is a small series of Burroughs set during World War I, where the survivors of a submarine attack singing and some of the submariners become stranded in an isolated island which time forgot. Dinosaurs, primitive men, and all the rest... . Much better than what it sounds, much better than the 2 movies, and preceding many other books where modern man meet a pre-civilization environment. Of famous such works, only Conan Doyle's Lost World adventures precede this - but I am no expert on this branch of fantastic literature!

The release of The Da Vinci Code novel and motion picture have initiated several debates concerning the early church, leaving
many Christians confused and unsure about whether their faith can stand up in the face of adversity. In response, Michael
Easley, president of Moody Bible Institute, and John Ankerberg, president of the Ankerberg Theological Research Institute,
collaborated write a short, easy-to-read, and interesting book explaining and underlining the historical points The Da Vinci
Code novel overlooks or ignores.
Is the Bible accurate and reliable? Was Jesus married? Do the hidden gospels reveal more truths about Jesus than Christians care to admit? In The Da Vinci Code Controversy, Easley and Ankerberg address ten assumptions Dan Brown makes in his novel and, using historical evidence, show not only why his assumptions are ungrounded, but also reveal where the evidence really seems to point. While Easley and Ankerberg are respectful of Brown and those who believe the fiction, they are quick and ruthless in pointing out what is incorrect and false.
This well-written, precise little book is packed full of documented facts and explanations for anyone looking for answers. Although there are several books out covering similar topics, this book's calm tone and clear focus should put it near the top of the list. Informative and intriguing, it could easily be read in the course of an airplane flight.
This book would be a welcome reading experience for anyone wondering if any truth is within Brown's novel. It particularly would be helpful to someone wanting to know more about extra-biblical texts, such as the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Mary. Because it is backed by detailed research coupled with a courteous tone, this book could be read by Christians and non-Christians alike. - Jennifer Opperman, Christian Book Previews.com

Brief, but to the point, Michael Easley, John Ankerberg, and Dillon Burroughs have co-authored another fine contribution to
the growing literature rebutting Brown's "Da Vinci Code."
Their book, "The Da Vinci Code Controversy" is an excellent addition to the literature due to its brevity. Readers wanting a clear overview understanding of the issues, and of the truth, will find their writing quite helpful. Though brief, it is not shallow.
Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," Biblical Psychology," "Martin Luther's Pastoral Counseling," and "Beyond the Suffering: Embraciing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."

A Masterful Treatise On The Great Evil Of Sin

Review Date: 2001-05-06
Review Date: 2001-05-06
The Evil of Evils addresses a great need and exposes a great weakness of those who are followers of Christ in our day. The
theme of the book is that there is infinitely more evil in the least sin than there is in the greatest affliction. The renowned
Puritan preacher Jeremiah Burroughs shows in great detail the fact that there is no good in sin at all and that, though affliction
is not desirable in itself,God uses it in the lives of His people to accomplish much good. Rarely do modern authors even begin
to approach the depth and breadth that the Puritan's reached in exposing sin for the immense evil that it is. This is due
in part to the strong opposition to such preaching and teaching that will often be encountered. On p.28 Burroughs makes this
comment about how evil sin is "Sin is so opposite to God that, if it were possible that the least drop of it could get into
God's nature,God would instantly cease to be God." Sin is so opposed to the nature and the very existence of God that it would
destroy Him if it had the power to do so. Mr. Burroughs then seeks to show how sin is opposite to man's good. The truth set
forth in 'The Evil Of Evils' is so much needed in our day because it is to be feared that many in our day are much more fearful
of the least aflliction and have very little fear of the greatest sin. If the believer is to bring every thought captive to
the obedience of the Lord Jesus Christ then sin must be exposed for the great evil that it is,and affliction should be viewed
as an instument that God uses to conform His people to the image of His Son. The Word of God exhorts the people of God to
count it all joy in the midst of trials but never is this to be their attitude toward sin. This book will help the Christian
reader to have and maintain a godly perspective with regard to sin and affliction.
Why Sin is to be Feared, Avoided, and Hated Even More Than Affliction

Most people will do all they can to avoid affliction, but do very little to avoid sin. The one recurring theme of this book:
it is better to choose affliction than sin. As Burroughs expounds godly wisdom from Scripture, he shows us why nothing is
to be more feared than sin, nothing is to be more avoided than sin, and nothing is to be more hated than sin.
He effectively shows that sin is the greatest "evil of evils" by exposing the nature of sin: how it is so opposite to God, wrongs and offends God, most opposite to man's good (and more opposite to man's good than affliction is), takes away excellencies in all things, of the same nature as the devil, a furtherance of the devil's work, fullfills the devil's will, makes man conformable to the devil, etc. Along with pungent analogies, Burroughs opens our eyes to see the ugly heinous nature of sin and exposes sin for what it truly is, so that we may once again have a dread of sin, a hatred for sin, and a love for holiness.

In one weak moment, Dara makes a wish to Dexter's spirit for a new companion...and a British Blue kitty begins meowing outside her door.
***** Twelve stories that would put even Scrooge into the Christmas spirit. It does not matter what TYPE of romance genre you prefer. This book has a little bit of everything. The stories are set in the U.S.A. and Europe. Some take place in the past, some in the present, and one story takes place in both! I strongly suggest that you put on something comfortable, brew up something hot (tea, coffee or cocoa will do), light up a fire, settle down somewhere quiet and begin reading this anthology. *****

CHRISTMAS WONDERLAND by Leanne Burroughs - When Samantha Noelle was talked into replacing her friend Monique as one of Santa's
helpers at Nickels Department store she was less than thrilled with the divinely handsome store manager who laughed at her
in her green elf costume. Sam thought Mr. Giovanni should have been called Mr. Grumpy and would have liked to just stay out
of his way but his precocious young daughter was going to show them both how much they all needed one another. *** Burroughs
has an incredible voice whether writing a Scottish historical or a contemporary love story.
THE POWER OF LOVE by Kemberlee Shortland - Life was pretty much perfect for Elaine (Lany) and Ethan and even though they hadn't planned to start a family right away their love was strong enough to sustain anything as long as they would be together. They would discover that love is the most powerful gift of all especially when St. Nicholas is around on Christmas eve to help miracles happen. *** Shortland writes a powerfully emotional story that moved me to tears with an intensity that took my breath away.
SEMPRE by Aleka Nakis - When you're young you often make unwise choices and Amanda, standing all alone on Christmas Eve had reason today to regret the choice that changed her life. Not all of it, after all she had her son Jason just not the man who captured and still held her heart today. Yet, when Marco appeared on the observation deck with her perhaps miracles could happen and she would have a second chance at love. *** A lovely sweet story that proves once again that love is the best miracle of all -- any time of the year.
CHRISTMAS MASQUERADE by Michele Ann Young - The Earl of Dart had no use for Christmas so buried himself chopping firewood at his gamekeepers cottage. Seeing a vision coming thru the blowing snow he first thought he'd died and went to heaven, but more likely she was just another damsel looking to ensnare him in a parson's mousetrap. Well, she'd find out he wasn't about to succumb to her feminine wiles, but then again, maybe she really didn't know who he was. On the other hand wouldn't he be surprised to learn who she was as well? *** Ms. Young writes a lovely tale of two people fate was kind enough to bring together on a snowy Christmas Eve. Well done and a sweetly sensual tale to take the chill off a cold and snowy night.
BALLOU'S CHRISTMAS WISH by Keelia Greer - Not only will you be rooting for Melody to have her Christmas wish come true in this charming dog-lovers story but even her West Highland terrier Ballou gets his wish too! *** This was a totally delightful story that put a smile on my face from beginning to end.
THE CHRISTMAS CURSE by Rachel Michaels - All her life it seemed Jenna was a walking disaster around the Christmas holidays. Just once - one time - could she have a pleasant Christmas? Well, it was worth a shot to wish on a star, just this one time and maybe magic could happen. *** This was a very cute story proving sometimes wishes do come true. Sweet.
MAGGIE AT CHRISTMAS by Diane Davis White - Maggie Donaldson wasn't quite so sure offering the hospitality of her home to Professor Ethan Spencer was such a good idea especially when she felt such an amazing attraction. Ethan hadn't thought he'd ever want to get tied down again but Maggie Donaldson was kind and compassionate and the complete opposite of his ex-wife - with Maggie he saw an end to loneliness. *** A tremendous love story and four foster kids that will steal your heart. Have tissues near by for this one!
RACHEL'S LIGHT by Victoria Houseman - As governess to Samuel Stein's children Rachel Levine knew her place yet couldn't help but wish to take away the pain and bitterness she saw in Samuel's beautiful eyes. Samuel was bitter over what life had dealt him after losing his wife and the pain from his mangled leg but most of all hated that he hurt Rachel with his drunken tirades, a lovely gentle young woman who deserved better. *** Houseman writes a powerfully beautiful love story of redemption as a gentle young woman brings light and promise to man who once thought his life bleak.
THE GREATEST GIFT OF ALL by Candace Gold - After having been jilted by her fiancé Claudia wasn't in the mood to go to any dance but once there met a guy too good to be true. Things progressed nicely until he was called up to serve in the Iraqi war and Claudia's world fell apart again when he was reported MIA. *** Well written and emotional - have the tissues handy! Lovely.
VICTORIANA by Heather Hiestand - Hiestand has come up with an exceptionally creative and original story when Robyne Arthur, a young woman stumbles upon an old Victorian `cracker' and is transported from Tacoma, Washington to Victorian England. Only it's an England that has been frozen in time. The Earl of Chester points out that Robyne holds the key to saving them but she would forfeit any chance to return home. The more she gets to know the kindly Earl of Chester, she may just decide that staying with him is where she wants to be. *** Loved this very original time travel from the very first pages. A step back into Victorian England. Sweetly satisfying.
TEMPT ME TWICE by Anna Kathryn Lanier - Lady Meghan had given her heart to the Duke of Prestwick many years ago only to discover that he was betrothed and would marry another. In flight to the continent, she married another and bore a daughter. Seven years later they are both free, but would the Duke be able to tempt an older and wiser Meghan again? *** A beautiful story of betrayal, lost love, and redemption written with an eloquent and passionate voice that simmered with sensuality.
BLUE CHRISTMAS CAT by DeborahAnne MacGillivray - Dara Seaforth had loved Rhys St. John since she was eleven years old - still remembered the one and only kiss she'd given him at eighteen. When on Christmas Eve and Dara was more lonely than ever, a stray cat with a name tag of Elvis showed up on her doorstep. Rhys had returned to the village and been looking for a reason to approach Dara. Following his silly cat's tracks through the snow he was overjoyed to discover they led straight to Dara's door! *** This was a charming little story that proves that someone is bound to listen when one's heart is pure to grant special wishes at Christmas time. MacGillivray writes with a pleasing sensual voice and wonderful character development for both human and feline.
This is a terrific collection of stories that sets the mood for ringing in the holiday spirit with warm loving feelings, faith and charity. You can't miss with this lovely fine-tuned collection with a bit of something for everyone's taste.

Mr. Kanze and I seem to agree on at least one thing, that Ms. Wadsworth's JOHN BURROUGHS: THE SAGE OF SLABSIDES is an excellent
contribution. As for my own book, I've searched it for the word "kidnap" and can't seem to find that phrase anywhere. --

Ginger Wadsworth, distinguished author of children's books on John Muir and Rachel Carson, brings the naturalist, literary
critic, and philosopher John Burroughs to life in The Sage of Slabsides. As a Burroughs biographer myself (my THE WORLD
OF JOHN BURROUGHS was published in 1993 by Harry Abrams, with a deal in the works to revive the book next year in paperback),
I am in a position to judge the quality of Wadsworth's treatment. I think she does a brilliant job of telling the story
of Burroughs's long and eventful life in a way that children will find captivating. There are quotes from Burroughs's published
writings, journal entries, and an array of fine photographs, all well chosen to appeal to kids. The scholarship is first-rate,
too. For example, Wadsworth notes the adoption of Burroughs's son, Julian, in July, 1878, as is documented in his journal,
rather than repeating the false claim of Edward Renehan's JOHN BURROUGHS: AN AMERICAN NATURALIST that the boy was essentially
kidnapped from its biological mother in April. The secret of Burroughs's success may be that, with his playful humor and
passion for nature and the out-of-doors, he remained a kid at heart throughout his nearly 84 years. He had a genius for
passing along his childlike enthusiasm to others, which explains why people could not get enough of his company. Wadsworth
keeps up the tradition. Boys, girls, and adults reading this book will likely be inspired to walk a few of Burroughs's
forest paths.
