I had not heard of John Burroughs before I read this book, although I had read others of Chris Highland's books. This one is particularly powerful. Burroughs made me look at the natural world in ways I had not even known before. I recently took the book with me on an outdoor trip with friends, and read them several passages around the fire at night. Chris's book will be on my essential equipment list for future trips. Burroughs is a naturalist on a level with John Muir, and more folks should read what he has to say about the natural world, man and our own spiritual awareness. And the framework that Chris has created for Burroughs' writings makes them even more powerful.

A Treasure!

I have read all of the books in the Barsoom or Mars series, many times. I read a great deal and there are very few books I would read even twice, let alone 6 or 8 times. I have given them to others of all ages, male and female, and I have never yet heard someone say they didn't love these books! I highly recommend them to anyone! They contain no sexual situations or cursing so they are suitable for children and teens but the stories are imaginative and well written so that even adults will find the books hard to put down. There are 11 books in the Mars series and about 5 books in a Venus series that are equally fun to read. The first book in the Mars series is called A Princess of Mars. Start there and let the journey begin!

This book is a very comprehensive review of microphone constuction, specifications and use. Lou uses his experience in design and building microphones, along with his vast experience using them to give an in-depth look behind the facts of the microphone. Excellent technical reference.

After reading five ERB books prior to this one, I was starting to think I might be a little burnt out on him for a while, but this book pulled me in with hardly a hesitation. The story is standard Burroughs, sticking pretty well to his formula - man falls in love with girl, rescues girl, loses girl, rescues girl, loses girl, ..., man and girl live happily ever after.

ERB's heroes are seldom less than perfect and when they are (as in this book) they usually rise above it through the love of a good woman, this story remains true to that form. It looks to have been serialized, as many of his stories were, with many a shift of location. The reader is taken from Chicago to Hawaii to a Pacific Island to New York to Mexico with the all of the accompanying naivete of the times. Whether he is battling pirates, head hunting samurai, evil hoboes, Mexican bandits or his own personal demons you can't help but enjoy the raw power of the main character.

For all of it's simple story and predictable events, this remains a fun book to read, excellent for pre and early teens and those of us that just want a little old fashioned escapism.

For further adventures of Bridge see the Oakdale Affair. P-)

In our times, Grandmas are getting younger and younger--and this book really presents that picture. I hope someone will stock this one soon; it's a terrific representation of my own Mom from my daughter's point of view.

Actually, this wasn't my first introduction to Burroughs; that would have been "Speed" (no, not a story about a bus that couldn't go over 50 because it would explode!) - which is sadly out of print I think. I'm not sure the David Lynch film of Naked Lunch really did this book justice - make your own mind up. A truly astonishing piece of cut-up in action.

Very comprehensive, well documented book on women in science,; So far it is the only book I've read in that category; Full of data and yet not boring ! Highly recommended to all who want to understand the roots of women's exclusion from science and problems in gender inequality we are still experiencing today ! Margaret JW

In this wonderfully illustrated book, Mr. Burroughs tells about the horrors of todays chicken-farms and factory farms in general. This book is good and safe for kids, but also applies to anyone else who wants to know more about where their chicken nuggets came from. Buy several copies and give them to all your friends!

I gave this five stars, even though it definitely reads as though the Master was writing it with an eye toward publication someplace that pays by the word, because in spite of that defect, the familiar Burroughs panache shines through. In fact, from the careless, rollicking phrase on the first page, "the president of The First National Bank of--Oh, let's call it Oakdale--" to the names of some of the hobo characters (Soup Face, Dopey Charley, Dirty Eddie), to the eye-rolling pile of coincidences at the end, the whole thing feels very much like Burroughs' having a jolly time trying his hand at an Edwardian drawing-room farce. Very unusual, for those only familiar with Tarzan and Barsoom. But honestly, unless you're already an ERB fan, you're probably not going to find slogging through the prolix prose all that worth it. If you are a fan, though, you'll close the book at the end with a worthwhile sense of satisfaction at watching Burroughs pull it off once again.
