Great For Beginner Sailors!

Review Date: 1998-10-08
I'm 16, and Just recently bought a Cal 21' sailboat. The first thing i did after the purchase, was buy this book. It gives great tips, tricks, and ideas for the simple sailor. From swinging out on the sails to how to help your sick furry friend who is on-board, this book will tell you what to do. It's a excellent resource book, and you can bet that it is one of those 'necessary books' that you will want to leave on your boat for easy reference. I give it *****!!!

Dorothea Benton Frank tells a wonderful story of intertwined lives in the lowcountry around Shem Creek. She is a great storyteller. This is the second of her audiobooks I have read and enjoyed. I highly recommend this as an authentic southern, lowcountry tale.

Excellent summary of the vast literature.
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-09
As Y.C. Fung put it, biomechanics is a field characterized by a vagueness of definitions and abundance of literature. I was feeling hopelessly lost trying to get a handle on both the engineering aspects and biological phenomena. Martin and Burr have summarized the entire field very efficiently. It would help if you have a previous background in solid mechanics, but even that has been explained in a simple fashion. The exercises at the end are what attracted me most. They look very similar to actual problems in research and doing them sincerely is sure to enhance your understanding and appreciation of the field. A must have for the researcher/Grad.student in biomechanics/bioengineering.

A Maritime Lawyer's View
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-22
As a Board Certified maritime attorney with almost 20 years experience representing individuals in Florida I have received many phone calls over the years from people that have experienced storm related losses. I have also been a member of the United States Power Squadron for almost 13 years. This book should be purchased by everyone that owns a boat or works on a boat. It is written in plain english and answers many of the basic questions that I field between June and December of each year. With boat insurance as expensive as it is and deductibles higher than ever you need this book! The recommendations in this book are the types of things your insurance company will expect you to do. They may help you avoid a claim altogether. If you have a claim it will help you prove that you took the necessary precautions to protect your property and the property of others. It will also make my job easier if you need professional help! This book is a must read and it will save you money!

Meant For Each Other!!

If you've read and enjoyed first in the Heart of Texas series than you'll enjoy this one. Glen and Ellie made the book so interesting that I couldn't put it down until I had finshed it. It also had me laughing in places. This was well written and the humor had it's place in the story. Glen was funny in his attempts to get Ellie from having anything to do with Richard romantically. This is a book that you won't be able to put down. It's so well written that you can understand the struggles that Glen has within himself over his friendship with Ellie and his wanting to change that relatioship to something more. Debbie Macomber has done a great job with the characters and the unfolding storyline. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has read and those who haven't read any Debbie Macomber books.

AZTECS, INCAS, AND THE ANCIENT AMERICAS
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-02
From the DJ: Brundage, a historian who has written extensively about both the Incas and the Aztecs, here compares their origins, creation myths, religions and ways of life and warfare. "The Incas," he writes, "trusting in their destiny as a master race, planned ahead whereas the Aztecs, pessimistic and acutely aware of irresponsibility as a main characteristic of the gods, lived from day to day dutifully performing the rites of war." He portrays the Inca Empire as "synonymous with order," the Aztec Empire as a "byproduct of warfare." His innovative explanation of the defeat of the two nations by the Spanish is based on his belief that by the sixteenth century both empires had already passed their apex.

A Brilliant Arrangemen of the 20th C's most creative minds.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-23
I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to study with Dr. Sajkovic in the early 1980s during my first two years at college. Her book "Visionaries of our Time" is a look into the ideas and accomplishments of some of the more Humanistic & highly cereberal leaders of the 20th C. Albert Einstein, Dr. Martin Luther King, Dr. Albert Schweitzer, and the Grimke Sisters, just to name a few. It is a very cogent, and moving composite of their accomplishments and legacies.

Dr. Sajkovic's own personal views and contributions to the areas of History, Philosophy, and ethics are evident all throughout the work. Some of the pictures in the book were done by her first year college students - who were inspired to contribute after having studied with her and read up on the visionaries in question. In August of 2004, Miriam T. Sajkovic passed away. The Human Race lost a vital proponent of education, who fought not only for freedom of the mind, but also for the right all humans to be allowed a proper and well rounded education in the Humanities. Anyone who's had even a 5 minute conversation with her realized that immediately!

Please read her work on the Visionaries. Anyone who wants to see what the Human Spirit is capable of achieving when it truly tries hard enough to help their fellow human being, and rise above the petty behavior we often see in our everyday world, can find clear evidence of that here. As Dr. Sajkovic often said to me, "Get ahold of all your sources & put together your facts correctly, and even the most stubborn ignorance doesn't stand a chance. Not even the military industrial-complex!"

get to know what missionaries think about...
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-05
There is nothing like reading devotional stories from the experiences of real live missionaries. In the tradition of "Streams In The Desert" these contemporary missionaries (also from OMS International) share their intimate thoughts with you in the form of short stories. I suppose that I am biased in that I did know a few of these missionaries personally, but the stories really give you a realistic understanding of what missionaries go through and how they think. So if you would like to know just what goes through the minds of missionaries, and if you would like to learn more about how God loves and cares for his flock, this would be a fine addition to your library.

This book was extremely well written and is certainly a help to any woman in a potentially dangerous relationship. Even if you don't fall into that category, read it as a good samaritan, and understand what people go through on a daily basis and how they cope with it. Truly an amazing story.
