Nell's Cowboy by Debbie Macomber (Large Print Mills & Boon Hardcover)

Review Date: 2006-11-03
Fifth book in the Heart of Texas series (also known as Sons of Promise): Lonesome Cowboy, Texas Two-Step, Caroline's Child, Dr. Texas, Nell's Cowboy, and Lone Star Baby. Nell's Cowboy is the book in the series in which the mystery of the ghost town of Bitter End is finally solved.

Description from the book back cover:

Nell Bishop, widowed mother of two, is turning Twin Canyons into a dude ranch. Her first guest is Travis Grant, an Easterner known for his children's books. Nell's kids are crazy about him, and Nell could fall for him herself. But it's too soon to be thinking of love and marriage again. Not only that, Travis seems intent on stirring up the town - uncovering the mystery in its past.

SONS OF PROMISE: They're rugged, proud and just a little sassy! They'll make you laugh and they'll make you cry. Meet them all in Promise, Texas.

I have read many books by Debbie Macomber, and this one was the least interesting. It really seemed to drag, had fewer characters and story lines than the other books. Nell and Travis, the two main characters of this book are not quite as interesting as the other match ups that usually populate her novels. The mystery of Bitter End does get solved, but that part of the story was really slow. Also, I felt that the minor characters like Nell's two children and her mother-in-law were not very well drawn.
I know that Debbie Macomber fans are very loyal, so I am sorry if this offends some of you, but maybe I have read too many of her books with the same plot.

Bible Criticism from the Unbeliever

This book was written from the unbelivers point of view. The criticism in this book may backfire, if the unbeliever looks up the Bible verses and reads with an open mind and right spirit. One may be instead be lead to the truth of God.

1 Corinthians 2:14
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Would be great if it were true...

Mr. Burr brings up some great points. Unfortunatly, many of the "contradictions" he lists are not contradictions at all. For example, one "contradiction" Burr lists in his book involves the genealogies of Christ. In the New Testament, there are two genealogies of Christ. One is in the book of Matthew, chapter 1, and another in the book of Luke, chapter 3. If you look at them, they look completely different. They don't even agree on Jesus' grandfather. The fact is, however, that these lists are not contradictory, but instead complementary. The genealogy in Matthew is Joseph's family line, while the one in Luke is Mary's.

There are many cases like these. The he doesn't back up his claims...

I consider William Henry Burr's Self-Contradictions of the BibleEa smashing success. Burr truly brings out simple fact that the belief that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant, and literally true word of God - thrives on ignorance, not just of a general sort, but an ignorance of the Bible itself. Because of critical thinkers like William Burr, the Apologetics are nowadays working evermore harder to explain awayEall the inconsistencies in the bible. For instance, God is kind, merciful, and good. Ps.100:5 "For the Lord is good, his mercy is everlasting." Yet God is cruel, unmerciful, and evil. Num.25:4 "And the Lord said to Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the Lord against the sun, that the fierce anger of the Lord may be turned away from Israel."

Let try another. Should we rejoice when our enemies suffer? Pr.24:17 says no Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth.EContrast with a resounding yes; Ps.58:10 The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wickedE I think I have made my point. For more insight into the many oddities of the bible one should pick up Dan Barker's Losing Faith In Faith: From Preacher To Atheist. As Mr. Burr clearly shows the holy book of multiple choice is truly a curious thing.

An amazing little book, still raising eyebrows and upsetting fundamentalists 150 years after its publication. While the author is not a scholar and never claims to be, he offers a number of cases where the bible might contradict itself. No attempt is made to put things in context, or to put a spin on them. Just verse for verse contradictions. The Preface is an eye opener, and I have to say this little volume has aged very well. Thought provoking for those who can't be spoon fed their faith.

GENEALOGIES OF JESUS DO CONTRADICT

If religious folk would actually read the entire Bible, 99% of them would be agnostic long before the last page.

The review below by Sargus Lockhart is the perfect example. Lockhart clearly has not read the Bible's genealogies; both are explicitly Joseph's family tree. (See, e.g., Luke 3:23 ff.: "Jesus . . . the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli," etc.) It is also laughable to suggest that any organization as sexist as a religion would bother to include a maternal genealogy. Of course, using Joseph's genealogy is another logic buster, since the authors of the gospels purport to believe that Jesus' true father was Yahweh.

I listen to audio books while doing housework. I found this one to be different and interesting. Which is hard to find when you read as much as I do. The ending was totally predictable, but it was still a fun, easy read. I'm glad they didn't end up together, it would have never worked and made the story more realistic that way. Go for MacDonald, Britt!!!

I was very disappointed in this book. I felt that certain scenes dragged which left me bored and turning pages without reading them. The chemistry between Lance and Britt could have been more explosive. There was something always exploding or catching fire in this book, too bad it wasn't them. And then, when a relationship between them is finally established, in the end they part and go their separate ways. I really felt cheated. This was my first taste of Edna Buchanan's work and if her other books are like this one, it'll be my last. Read it and decide for yourself.

If you know Miami this one has it all - beaches, the everglades, parties, a movie crew, gangs, drive-bys, sex and murder for hire. A quick read with characters you might have met. Britt makes a case for reporters who care about the victim, too bad she's fictional.

Truly the author has tied up all the necessary components in this novel set in a Miami that is beautifully diagrammed. Britt, a crime reporter, has her back up most the time but slides into a more human role about halfway into the book. The story weaves through the setting, crimes and a movie in a starkly lovely way, meeting some pretty weird folks. A bit different, but a good tight story. I listened to the unabridged audio, and thought the reader was well suited to the Britt character and did an admirable job on voice changes as well.

I thought we were getting another great book by Catherine Coulter....only to find that it's a republishing of previous books is really disappointing. Hopefully not too many other people who are Coulter fans and who have both The Target and The Edge won't get taken in to buy Double Jeopardy. Then those who have not read the two books definitely need to read them...they're great thriller novels.

I am glad that I read the first customers review more in depth before purchasing this book off my wish list. I have already read both of these and didn't realize that they were reissues together under a different cover. The Maze was the first book I ever read by her and was hooked. Excellent book, and I still believe her best to date. But both of these "The Target" and "The Edge" are good books in their own right as well.

Always save the best for last seems to be the motto for the Sons of Texas series. Wade's character was introduced in the previous books, bu there he finally becomes a three - dimensional character. This is an emotionally charged book -- it brings laughter, tears, and finally a heart-warming end to Bitter End. Unlike many other books with a religious character, Wade's status as a pastor is part of his character and motivations, not a stereotype. Newcomer, Amy is a young woman struggling to find a home for her unborn child and Wade promises to deliver her three miracles - a place to live, a job, and a father for her child. Ms. Macomber delivers a miracle of her own in the final installment of the Sons of Texas. This is definitely a KEEPER.

A logical question would be, "Why would a person who detests the romance genre listen to this audiobook?" To expand my mind?

I wouldn't read a romance, but I found this tape thrown out by a local library, so why not listen?

Things seem so mundane and non-different in Promise, Texas, I really didn't expect much to happen. And it didn't. One positive thing, it is easier to keep track of the characters here than in some other audiobooks.

The reader does a good job with the voices, though Amy's "protector" Dovie tends to sound like an old woman, real old.

Routine happenings here, nothing unusual or even remarkable: for example, Lyle Whitehouse, the so-called cow-hand, approaching Amy with "lust in his heart" (and being what Amy found to be "unmannerly") and then having to fight the upright pastor, Wade (whose heart is, of course, pure). Ever heard or seen that one before? If you haven't, you've missed many an "oater."

In fact, the whole plot, such as it is, reminds me of an old western, but even duller. I doubt that I'll ever have occasion to read anything by Ms. Macomber again, or any Harlequins for that matter. Unless I'm lost on a desert island with only that one book. She pulled my coat on this one, and I think I've learned my lesson. Diximus.

Each story in Long Tall Texan Summer was a little too short to reach the full potential that Ms. Palmer usually reaches. The romantic tension between the characters barely starts before it is over. Most Diana Palmer's novels are fantastic but I would reccomend passing on this book and choosing another by her.

Is this even Diana Palmer?

I was so excited to get this trilogy. To say I was disappointed is a gross understatement. I've heard that sometime publishers will publish books written by other authors under a well-known writer's name to generate sales. After reading this lastest effort by Ms. Palmer, I believe it may be true. Where are the rough, arrogant, hard-as-nails, angst-ridden, passionate cowboys I've come to expect from the Long, Tall Texan series?? When those guys fell, they fought tooth and nail, and they fell hard. There was no passion, which is very untypical of Diana Palmer, no depth to the stories, and the character development was weak. If I truly believed Ms. Palmer wrote this trilogy, I would never say these things because she really is a fabulous writer and the only one whom I will even read in the genre. Ms. Palmer, if you did write these stories, and the change is so dramatic because someone told you this is what women want in men these days, don't believe it. I want the men back

Obviously you'll quibble with some of the selections or rankings, which is probably the point of a book like this. A short synopsis of each film or some stories and trivia are included (example: Toto the dog from 'The Wizard Of Oz' made $125 a week in production; the munchkins made $50). Some nice behind the scenes photos are another highlight. Not an incredibly insightful book, but good to pass an hour or two.

I personally have a hardbound editinon of this book and tresure it as one of the best books of my library if only because of the great photos conatined in it. Otherwise, there is a drop of bitterness regarding the members of the list. Why in God's name are Brigitte Bardot, Sharon Stone, Bruce Willis, Stallone and Schwarzengger included? Also, Richard Burton (#78), Peter O'Toole (#91), Anthony Hopkins (#99), Denzel Washington (#98) and Susan Sarandon (#93) belong much, much higher up in the list than there given ranks. Meryl Streep (#37) belongs in the top five, although the top ten are all but two (Kate Hepburn and Brando) departed legends. Why are not Audrey Hepburn (#21), Judy Garland (#23), De Niro (#34), Buster Keaton (#35) and Jack Nicholson (#17) immediately following the top ten? Miss Hepburn should be in Duke's place of #5, actually Marilyn's place (#4)... Marilyn can have #5 and Duke can be #19 or #20. Miss Shirley MacLaine is also unforgiveably missing from this list as well as Deborah Kerr, Claudette Colbert, Orson Welles and Ray Milland. Even actors from the legendary period are not deserving of being on the list... Bob Hope, Ava Gardner, Warren Beatty (the scum of the earth!) and Rock Hudson. I guess the entire public can't be pleased. In my opinion very few contemporaries should've been allowed to compete with the untouchable talent the legendary performers exuded... only Streep, Pacino, De Niro, Nicholson and Washington are in the class of Hepburn (both Kate and Audrey), Cagney, Burton, O'Toole and Cooper (another who belonged in the top ten... Cary Grant's later career can't compare to his work in the 30s and 40s, making him undeserving of his rank at #6). On the whole, this book as an entertainment is a delight but in terms of talent it is somewhat a disappointment.

I really enjoyed this book and the photographs were spectacular. However, the folks who ranked the 'stars' obviously hadn't seen many of the movies the stars were in. For example....#31 Tom Cruise over #78 Richard Burton...oh come on!! Gregory Peck, Anthony Hopkins and Al Pacino should most definitely been ranked in the top ten. Frank Sinatra should have been at least #11. How much did #53 Arnold Schwarzenegger pay the authors to include him in this list?!? He's the butt of many comedian's jokes. How on earth did Bruce Willis make this list?? I've been going to movies for 65years and I consider myself a qualified critic and this list dissappointed me.

_Eye for an Eye_ by Erika Holzer has a fast-paced plot, rich characterizations, frequent dialogue, crisp and concise wording, and a credible and moving narration about an injustice leading to vigilantism and then anarchy -- well worth reading (for Rand fans or not). When, ten years ago, I saw the movie of the same name (starring Sally Field and Keifer Sutherland), I didn't know it was based on the novel, and it was only recently that I first read it. Then, after viewing the movie again, I found that, while I liked the well-produced movie, I enjoyed the novel's more complex plot, wider scope, and its philosophical framework. The chapter titles (each beginning with "C", the first chapter being "Catalyst") are revelations of the tight organization of the story and of the theme and purpose. Some phrasing that especially attracted me include: "fearball", "passives and actives", and "horror file". Seeking the same pleasure, I'm going to read Erika Holzer's other novel, _Double Crossing_, too.

"eye for an eye" was such a powerful movie that we forget there
was an even more powerful book behind it. holzer's novel is still in the front rank of tales of violence and retribution. the characters ring true, the action will have you gritting your teeth, and the climax can take your breath away. as good...and as apt...now as it was when first published.

Patriots Will Weep

Just as did DMX from Wyoming, I read this book for school ... in the 6th grade ... and as an extra credit. I remember it very well since my mother had a first edition ... a precious item to be sure. I was very excited at that time about military genre novels. Like a lot of boys in the 1950's I had family members who served, were wounded or were killed in World War II. I started reading and by the time I finished I was crying. Weeping in pain is a more apt description. Have you ever seen a 6th grade boy of today weep in agony and desparation? I wanted to build a time machine so I could go back and tell them all "Don't do that to him, he just screwed up one little time ... he didn't mean to say what he said ..." I went to the library, which in those days required a 2 hour bus trip ... and tried to find out everything I could about Naval Courts Martial and history and, and, and ... oh my , everything I could to try to go back and save him. But guess what, Friends and Neighbors, I discovered that this was a piece of fiction ... can you imagine my relief? But wait! I went to my 6th grade teacher, Mister Hively, who had returned from Tarawa with one eye, one foot and terrible scars. Mister Hively, the hero ... whose one eye leaked tears when I told him everything I had done after I had finished reading the book. We talked about the fictional message and he asked me "do you think this can happen now in 1956?" The McCarthy era had just ended and of course I knew nothing about the message of the book in modern terms. The message .... the message of Patriotism ... not the "patriotism" of an extremist truck bomber or a sheet wearing cross-burner, but the simple love for Our Country. It today's mirror you could extrapolate to the Kurdish refugees, to the Sudanese, to the Central Americans, to all of the groups of people who are exiled for one reason or another. Matter of fact, you can look at the comments of a previous reviewer, DMX up there in Wyoming, and see a young man exiled from his wonderful country. DMX, a victim of our modern society, has been exiled just as surely as the that young man in 1830 .. exiled by a president who parses the definition of sexual contact; exiled by the school system who filter and water down and massage and marginalize the learning process; exiled by a commercialized multi-media system promoting mediocracy. Poor thing, DMX is adrift just as surely as was that Patriot who sailed the seas for 50 years Without A Country.

Please ignore "DMX from Da Hood." It is obvious from his grammatical error (it should be "worst" book, not "worse" book) that he does not appreciate a wonderfully moving tale of a dark period in American history. "The Man Without A Country" is a quick read but one that will stay with you for a long time. Highly recommended.

This book is the worse book I have ever read. You obviously have no life if you want to read it. The only reason why I read it is because it was for a school project.
