A fine job--Fritz Burns is a non-entity in the consciousness of ninety percent of California residents, but Keane's book takes you through the ups and downs of a man whose endless "little boxes" (though Fritz Burns surely didn't approve of the condescending song--we're all, in the end, from some kind of suburbia) were only part of the accomplishments of a long life as an L.A. "player"--part-politician, part-P.T. Barnum, all salesman.

Every dot-com visionary who lost his shirt in the past year should read this book for inspiration--Burns' story is a literally rags-to-riches tale, and he would have fit right in with today's business leaders.

Besides, who can dislike a man who hired lollipop starlets in bikinis to cut his lawn?

I must take issue with your kind review. It seems like either gross negligence or a complete lack of understanding on the part of the author to not mention Burns' involvement in the Fireside, probably the cornerstone project in his career as a developer. Further, some mention of his membership to the (apparently) Masonic order of the GRC is suspiciously absent.

Nevertheless, it is an excellent tome and worth reading. I bought two.

Tremendous!

Gibbon's account of the Romans comes to mind, as does Benjamin's recently published Arcades projects, not to mention Michelet's exhaustive study of the French Revolution, but really there is no precedent for what Mr. Keane has pulled off here.

Frostie was an excellent story, well-told. Once the story got going, it was very engaging. The book is hard to put down. Adults can appreciate the way the story is well-crafted. Kids will love, well let's face it... you can't beat a story with evil snowmen!

I picked up this book for my ten-year-old nephew and read it before giving it to him. I found the book very enjoyable and easy to read. The way the book was written and the story itself made it hard to put the book down. There were a number of very positive themes in the story. These included the aspects of friendship, loyalty, trust, and responsibility. It also instilled a feeling of parental camaraderie showing that one can work with their parents as a team to reach a common goal. Instead of showing adults as the bad guys or a a group that doesn't understand teenagers, it wove them into a cohesive force with the two friends in a common battle against evil. I recommend this book and look forward to more works from this author.

I won't pretend to have complete lack of bias, as this was written by someone in a writers' group in my very own home town. (But I've never met the man, and have only his book to judge him by.)

"Sparks" is a fictional town, but having lived in the North Country all my life, I can say it has an authentic feel. The local legends Richards made up sound exactly like those the old timers at our own small stores tell, the desperate but plucky small town camradie is real, and the story could, well, it could ALMOST happen. How exactly would an Evil snowman come to life? (Won't spoil it but it's plausible in its own context, just real enough to give you the creeps!)

The characters are the kind you can believe exist, and you want things to turn out for them, but at the same time, you don't want the story to end. I'll be recommending it to middle grade kids who want scary stories but are beyond Goosebumps and nowhere near ready for King.

The cover (don't judge a book by that) made me think it would be a much lower-level book than it is, and although the protaganist is only ten, the story would suit junior high or or above.

Back in 1988 when this book was first published the current popular fascination with ghosts was just beginning and there weren't that many ghost books on the market. This was also a time when many people would never let their real name be used in this type of book for fear of ridicule and business owners would never want their business to be identified as haunted. It has been less than twenty years since this book's publication but my how things have changed. There are still a few people who have seen ghosts that wish to remain anonymous, but not many. As for business owners, they have learned that a good haunting will bring people into their business in throngs and now these same capitalist souls can't wait to get their business' name in a ghost book. There is even a mention in this book of a ghost tour in Maryland, which was an enterprise that even the author herself found unusual. Today there are ghost tours starting at almost every street corner in many major cities. Most notable however is the veritable explosion in the number of ghost books on the market. Being a great fan of this type of book I am of course thrilled to have so many ghostly choices but unfortunately there is a downside to this glut of ghost books. That downside being that many of the books coming out today aren't worth the ectoplasm that it might take to slime a gnat. I am happy to report however that this book has stood the test of time very well and is much superior to many of the books that have followed in it's ghostly footsteps.

This is a rather short book with less than eighty pages of text but there is a lot of spookiness packed into those few pages. The book is not as short as you might imagine however for the typeset is rather small and this tiny type, which rendered necessary the use of glasses, is one of the few problems that I had with this book. Also, a few of the stories were rather lacking in detail and verification and were thus little more than old legends. The majority of the stories were however well researched and included a solid history of the haunted location and the ghost or ghosts in question. Most importantly though, the solid majority of these stories contained the recent eyewitness accounts that are so important to the credibility of this type of book.

Considering the history and location of Maryland it is no wonder that there are spirits aplenty in this one time refuge for the persecuted Catholics of England. Both the Revolution and the Civil War were fought in this state and Maryland was one of the few states that was faced with British invasion during the War of 1812. It is not surprising then to find in the pages of this book the apparitions of Confederate and English invaders along with a ghostly Priest and a disembodied hand. Civil War buffs will also want to note the chapters devoted to the wraiths of Dr. Samuel Mudd and Mary Surratt who both may or may not have been involved in the Lincoln assassination.

All things considered, especially the date of publication, this is a very solid entry in the ghost literature of America. There are some features missing that one would hope to find in newer books, such as directions to the location being discussed but that sort of thing was unheard of in 1988. I would think that Mrs. Gallagher could make quite a good living churning out more of these books in today's climate. She has the talent, of that there is no doubt.

I like author's approach to things. He does not scare the reader away; he does not sound like "the all-knowing, arrogant Hollywood pro". He is trying to be helpful and more or less encouraging. Yet, he does talk about how things are in Hollywood realistically. He does want you, the reader, to take his advice and to try Hollywood out with his help. This book is not a must-have, but read it, just in case, if you have a chance.

This autobiographical account of Robert E. Burns' amazing double escape from a Georgia chain gang in the 1920s seems like a made up tale for Indiana Jones or some such movie hero. The events of his escape, his rise from a laborer to one of the most prominent citizens of Chicago as well as his return to the chain gang are incredible. And he escapes again! The second escape is even more amazing than the first, though he never is able to return to his ideal life or love in Chicago. The very good film version made in 1932 doesn't begin to cover the exciting details of the book, but it makes a good companion piece. The new, modern, well researched introduction, fills in the details that the reader will wonder about at the book's conclussion. It is suggested that the introduction material be read last.

True story of a man's quest for freedom

The story of Robert Burns is an amazing one. Told in the first person, he recounts his life after service in World War I, being sent to a Georgia chain gang, and escaping successfully twice. Although at times he seems to be playing for your sympathy, it is still nonetheless an excellent true story of a man dealing with harsh conditions and overcoming them. The end of the book doesn't tell what happens to him. In a nutshell, he is caught and sent to Georgia and is before a committee, which brings the man he originally robbed in the store. The man says Burns should not be imprisoned and he should be free. Burns is released and lives the rest of his life as a successful businessman.

I initially checked "Clueless" out of the library as I was planning my transition from a military career to a business career. After reading the book cover to cover, I bought it and read it again. I found that "Cluesless" is an accessible book that really put me on the right path to my next job. Doing the work in the book, crafting your work history and making it a goal focused document changed my outlook on and understanding of my entire working life. I now recommend "Clueless" to anyone I meet who is looking for their next job, next career, or next challenge in the work place.

Godin focuses on the true reality of why people get better jobs than others, despite the fact that they have the same credentials. If you are focusing on finding a job, and you just can't seem to do so, Seth Godin will help you get there. Godin is quick to assume that the most powerful way to get a job is to "market thy self," as WS would say. So I would recommend getting the book, and learning the ways to position yourself for success in the ever changing IT world

I think this book fulfills its title. It really lays out what to do in a job search from top to bottom. The book contains useful information in an easy to read format. Especially-useful information is shaded to stand out so you don't have to read a lot of fluff to get to the golden nuggets. The drawback is that although it contains many useful topics, I would have liked to see a bit more information on each those topics.

This is a good book to get a feel for the job-hunt process and to figure out which skills you might be lacking. Then, I would suggest going to another book that specializes in those skills.

I've found this book a good resource for developing training in Laboratory Science for Biomedical Electronic Technicians. Most new Technicians have extensive electro-mechanical background. Unfortunately, they are usually weak in the Clinical Chemistry area when new to the field. This book gives them a good background in Clinical Laboratory Science that is not written "over their heads."

College Prowler's Off the Record guide to James Madison University portrays a sort of "behind the scenes" look. It's the closest thing you'll get to going there without... well, going there. If you're looking for a guide that tells you what's really cool and what's not from a student's prospective, this is the guide you'll want. From the party scene to the on and off campus living, this guide will give you a little taste of just about anything -- and then you can decide whether or not you want a real taste (aka going there). For prospective or just curious parents and students, this guide should be a tremendous help. I am a senior at James Madison and I learned a ton of new information as I was writing this book. This book is as complete a guide as I could create (and was also quite the research project!). A guide like this would have been priceless when I was deciding where to go. I enjoyed writing this guide and would recommend it to anyone interested in JMU!

JOURNEYS THROUGH HELL - STORIES OF BURN SURVIVORS' RECONSTRUCTION OF SELF AND IDENTITY, is compelling and griping without being purposefully dramatic. Mr. Stouffer takes an approach of linking the personal accounts of survivor's stories with responsible narrative language that provides guidance and understanding into a world most of us don't understand. He establishes a dialogue that informs individuals about the nature of burn injuries and the involved procedures for burn treatment, and, takes the time to focus on recovery for both the survivor and the survivor's family.

JOURNEYS THROUGH HELL, skillfully managaes to combine the language of social science with the basic elements of trust, care, and the re-establishment of identity. It is without a false note and is deserving of a read by all.

Journeys Through Hell; a social psychological study
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-06
Journeys Through Hell is an important book that takes the reader into the inner, private lives of burn injury survivors. This is a gem of a book, a social psychological study that relies on the narrative stories provided by burn survivors themselves who, in biographical fashion let us look at what it means to be a survivor of a terrible injury. What it means, very much unanticipated by the severely injured person in the initial stages of the injury, is pain, anguish, torture, and very importantly, hope and anticipation of a healed future.

While the book focuses on severe burns, it really has a much broader appeal: it is really about what it means to be a trauma survivor. The trauma could be physical, psychological or both. In any case, the book is about how people experience the most extreme personal loss, and sudden, terrifying change. In instantly experiencing the destruction of their normal, everyday lives, and in having their worlds shattered, we see how the survivors slowly struggle to be reborn, and come whole again.

What Dr. Stouffer does so well, often very eloquently and with great sensitivity to the survivors, is the fact that he draws out from the survivors their hidden stories, fears, and deep feelings of loss as well as hope. He shows how survivors slowly come to understand what they have lost and how, with the help of caring others, they may go on to find deep, abiding strengths they never realized they possessed. Stouffer gives strong voice to the survivors, allowing them to tell their stories, while skillfully weaving their accounts into a sociological, constructionist foundation. This book is not dull sociology, or mind numbing psychological theory. It is vividly presented real human drama that helps illuminate how we all cope with personal loss, and how we build our lives. I strongly recommend Journeys Through Hell.

This book is perfect for kids and not bad for adults either. It is very clearly written and has outstanding illustrations. The health strategies and tips provided are done in the context of prevention... But things happen, accidents occur, kids get hurt. This book helps you and your children learn/know what to do in these situations. A fun, interesting, read.

I have 2 young children (ages 5 and 9 yrs old) myself and helping them understand what happens to their bodies when they hurt themselves is tough to do. Not to mention what to do when they are injured. Sometimes it is more "scared about the unknown" than anything. This book really helps the child research and learn how their bodies tell them when they are hurt and how to take care of the simpler injuries themselves. Plus, the format of the book draws them into learning about their bodies before an injury occurs. The illustrations are funny and help drive the points home in a kids kind of way. Great book and my daughter is already trying out the different first aid techniques in advance. Teach the child and you have taught the adult forever!

Too much for younger kids, too simple for older kids.

This was a pretty good book - I almost gave it 4 stars. The book has some useful info and the advice is sound (based on other 1st aid books I've read), so I don't think it would be a waste of anyone's money. The stated reading level is 9-12 but I felt it was a little too ambitious for most kids under 12 and too simple for kids over 12. I read this book to my 7 year old and most of it was over her head and had too many "steps". MY 12 year old also read it and she too thought there were too many "steps" in the instructions on what to do in an emergency. The sections in each chapter called "GET HELP!" were confusing to both kids. If you're looking for a Safety/1st Aid book for someone under 12 I would highly recommend "The Safety Book for Active Kids" (also sold by Amazon). If the reader is someone over 12 then a Red Cross First Aid Course and an adult first aid manual might be a better use of your money.
