Burns Books

This fantastic book taught me exactly how to build student understanding in place value, something I never felt my students fully grasped before. They always seemed to understand fine at the time, but a few months later they didn't see a problem when their answer to 19+14 came out to be 113.



The book includes many hands-on activities that build a SOLID foundation in place value that really stays with the students and supports them in all their computation and problem-solving experiences, not just for one stand-alone unit. I always knew I should use base ten blocks to help my students understand our number system, but didn't realize until I read this book that there were so many FUN activities to do with them! In addition to sequential "building-blocks" lessons meant for the beginning of the school year, this book also includes some lessons to use later in the year, particularly during units on multiplication and division. The lessons in this book do a great job building mental math skills for all 4 basic operations (including 2-digit and 3-digit numbers), and in the process many common student errors with the traditional pencil-and-paper computation methods are eliminated. (However, the authors explain how to support students in their efforts to make sense of the pencil-and-paper methods too). The authors include several literature-based lessons, such as adding the items in the book "1001 Things to Spot" and figuring how many items we have left to spot before the book ends.



The book is very user-friendly in that a basic step-by-step lesson plan is given for each lesson, and then readers are given a peek into how that exact lesson went in one of the author's classrooms, including word-for-word accounts of student responses, teacher responses to student misconceptions, teacher modeling, and so on. Extension ideas are included for students who need enrichment, as well as how to help struggling students, and frequently-asked questions are addressed at the end of each lesson. There are also periodic assessments in the back that ask students to show their thinking with drawings, numbers, and words, as well as sample student responses and the authors' notes on the student understanding or misconception represented in each sample. Instead of dreading that place value unit I knew I needed to teach each fall, it's now one of my favorite units of the whole year, all because of the ideas and support contained in this wonderful resource!

Excellent for those of us who learned the algorithm but either did not learn to make sense of the division and multiplication of fractions or do not quite know how to explain it. Marilyn Burn's strategies allow students to make sense of these "difficult concepts."

Very Good Book, Got me an A on my History Paper on a person of color

Today, Catherine lies within the boundaries of Gulf Islands national seashore and is a popular destination for local divers and fishermen....
The Life and Times of a merchant sailor is generally a well researched and formative study. The amount of historical documentation available to the author was extensive, although little new information relating to late 19th century ships and shipping was gleaned from the archaeological remains. The value of this work is in its use of Catherine and is a case study to discuss aspects of late 19th-century international trade in the resourcefulness of Norway's merchant marine.

My heart burned with excitement, fullness of joy and anticipation as I read this book. Believers and non-believers their is something in this book for you. The realness of this book,the articulate writing,the graphics,and the poetry is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME.

Okay, so I know I said lots of good things about this amazing artist already, in my review of his collection "Transluminal", but it bears repeating, especially when I just found out that "Lightship" was back in print. This book shows off a lot of the great work from Jim Burns's early career, and is worth daydreaming over for hours on end. Many British covers are featured, stuff that never made it across the sea to American bookshelves. I am personally most fond of the interpretations of Jack Vance, which for me captured the essential spirit of this master of exotic adventure SF. But I also enjoy all the Silverberg covers, all of which which evoke a sense of futuristic decadence and wild tech run amok. Nobody is as good at turning Mr. Silverberg's wonderfully descriptive prose into jaw-droppingly gorgeous imagery, and when I think of Majipoor I think of Burns's baroque architecture and ornate flying cars, as well as his mysteriously beautiful ladies and aliens. If only more SF movies could look half as good as these paintings; if only more production designers would fess up and admit that they've been ripping off Burns for years.

This book inspired and moved me to get in touch with my inner soul and recognize all of the many little material "things" in my life that are unnecessary and just plain unneeded. My thanks to the author for a wonderful book on a subject not usually written about!

This is a must read as our kids need to know what's out there that they are going to be confronted with and how God wants them to respond to these things. This book is a great presentation of God's will for living. I have used it countless times and after all these years of having and using it, I find myself pulling it back out to use again. This book is timeless and always appropriate for raising our young people. Great work Mr. Burns.

This is a great book for beginner quilters and experienced quilters. As usual, Eleanor burns gives excellent directions, and her method is above all. It is nice to make this in the traditional Christmas greens and also in florals for spring.

What a good find! This is a children's book that brings up the subject of love spanning the earth. As parents go to work their love is always there for their child. Here's the good part,those of us who feel guilty for traveling feel better knowing that our children have a special book for long distance love. Note: this is a good book for "away" grandparents too.
As a bonus there is a journal in the back of the book to record where the long distance love came from.
