Another excellent title from Burns
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 6 total.

I used to fish with Brad Burns in the 80's and have to say that he is the best fisherman, and best story teller, that I have ever fished with. This is saying a lot considering all the characters I have met on the water. Brad has an uncanny knack for finding fish and discovering how to lure them to a fly. In addition he has a talent for translating his experiences to the printed page. This book is another example of his lucid and informative style, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to try fly fishing in our coastal waters.

Very informative look at the Dreyfus Affairs
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-19
I read this book for a class on 19th century Europe. Burns has done a wonderful job of providing documentation showing both sides of the affair. I wish all historical events were analyzed and documented so completely. After reading this book I have a greater understanding of what led to the court martial of Alfred Dreyfus, the turmoil following his conviction, and the societal changes that continued to evolve through the first half of the 20th century. Great book!

Travel Paintings from Early America
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-17
I am a big fan of American Impressionism and I like all three of the artists featured in this book. It's a scholarly review of the images that made Americans travel to see if the scenery was as magical as these artists depicted. From the New England coast, Niagra Falls, Grand Canyon, and Yosemite these artist were engaging in a recording of scenery that would soon be altered by the hordes of tourists that followed.
While photography was just beginning to record many of these same scenes it was not in color and it lacked the ephemeral quality that master painters like Church, Homer, and Moran were able to create.
I'm fairly certain this is the first time three of my favorite artists are featured in one book and show favorite scenes of magnificent American places.

A Great Historical Study for Progressive Catholics
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-27
This book gives a thorough yet reader-friendly history of the struggles that Rome has had with the modern liberal world. Burns examines--in depth--the conflicts between Rome and American bishops as well as the role that the American laity has played throughout it all. Burns also addresses the Church in modern Latin America, and concludes with his views on the future of the Church for liberals and progressives. This is a necessary book for anyone wanting to understand the history behind the current schism between conservative and progressive American Catholics.

The Work of an Unheralded Genius
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-17
With "Gemini," Michael Burns has introduced himself to the world as an author whose breadth of imagination and depth of perception is without compare. Novels are all about character, and the characters with which Burns presents us are as vivid and as emotionally complex and believable as is possible in fiction. We love the characters for their good points, hate them for their flaws, blame them for the consequences of their actions and sympathize with them for their circumstances. Most importantly, however, is that these character's provide us with insight into what it means to be living in the world we do. The novel opens our minds to the realities of day to day life that we never seem to examine, and, in doing so, sheds light on what we all value and despise, and probes into the reasons why we do. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in how we as humans live and interract with each other and anyone who understands what it is to suffer and deal with suffering.

Delightful Read
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-12
A friend gave me this book as a gift, knowing I enjoy George Burns humor. The 138-page hardcover was a quick and enjoyable read. Fagen's narrative wove together a collection of what Burns said, creating an insightful glimpse into a celebrity's life. As I read the book, I was only mildly aware of Fagen--he was practically transparent--as I read the biography. Fagen does tell the story in the third person, but brings out the character of his subject so strongly that I lost myself in Burns.

Great pictures and explanations to know more about glaciers. Contents include: the unseen land of ice, types of glaciers, how ice moves, glacial landscapes, the ice ages, the evidence of land forms, history in the ice, the polar regions, explorers of the ice, plants and animals, the future of the ice caps and even a fact file. Would also be very helpful for a school project. The printed cover with colorful pictures helps to make this book interesting to young people.
