My wife and I used this book to plan our honeymoon to Hawaii. We stayed at one of the hotels Gayot's recommended, and it was better than described. This book is extremely accurate yet a little conservative, so you won't be disappointed by reality. The restaurant section is excellent. This is a superior guide without all the filler of other guide books.

Incredible recipes, bread making made easy

This is one of my most-used cookbooks. It got so worn out I had to order a new one. The range of recipes is amazing, from regular breads to cinnamon rolls to holiday breads to pizzas and calzones. The pictures are extremely helpful, the recipes are well-explained, and they give wonderful hints as to if the dough can be frozen, etc. I had never made bread before I got this book and now we are hooked on having fresh bread. I especially appreciate the breads that rise overnight in the fridge--I can come home from work and still have fresh bread for dinner. They are also much healthier than many breads because they are low fat and you can make rye, whole wheat, and even herb bread. My friends now request that I bring the dinner rolls to every gathering and potluck! And the pizza and cinnamon rolls are a big hit with kids.

sex ed with some common sense

I _know_ what does a 1969 book about sex education have any relevance in this new millenium, when, as the reports tell us, middle school kids are already having sexual encounters and college age kids have "buddy sex"?

Believe it or not, because the mechanics of sex hasn't changed, the book has relevance. The book is in a question and answer format that may seem a little outdated, with legal abortion, morning after pills and the growing number of never married moms. But the questions in 1969 are the same as in 2003 - "Why do boys say one thng in the dark and something else in the daylight?" is a question that has plaqued females since the beginning of time. And her discussion of the use of condoms is probably one of the most intelligent ones I've ever heard. M's Burn does not talk down to her readers or sugarcoat the truth

It's a neat little book, good (if you are a "Baby Boomer") to show your kids about how sex was handled when you were younger. Of course, it doesn'tcover AIDS or oral sex so you won't get a complete picture of sex in the new millenium. Still, I recommend it highly due to the easy to follow format and the nostalgia value.

First off this book takes a much different approach to chronicling the deaths of musicians. Not all are rock stars and the heavy hitters of Morrison, Hendrix, Joplin, Elvis are not here (they are mentioned in the calender of rock and roll causalties at the end though), and to me that's a good thing who wants another book about them? instead you will find some of the lesser know casualties such as (Ian Curtis, Darby Crash, Stiv Bators, Marc Bolan, Jobriath) mixed with some more prominent(the day the music died, Cobain, Hutchence, Freddy Mercury)over 60+ musicians covered in detail. The way this book is written is neither cold hard facts or by a mourning fan, more like a mixture of both This book also tries to connect all deaths mentioned within a chapter by a association game (this guys was the producer for these two bands and then this person from one of the bands died). The deaths are described with such vivid detail, but not to the point of morbidity. Its like you can see these poor souls during their final minuets which is really interesting. This book is not a chronicle of lives. A little background on each artist is given but most attention is focused on those last gasp. Some of the pictures are graphic, not in the sense of blood or guts but of mangled machinery and body bags. Others are just of the artist caught in the prime of life. This book for me was quiet profound, one feels as if they were there with these people before the end..maybe holding their hands as they slipped away.

The UN Military Response to the 1956 Suez War

Author: Lt.General E.L.M. Burns (Canada). 1963 first published in U.S.A., Ivan Obolensky, Inc. publisher, NYC, Library of Congress Catalog Card#63-12370. This book "is a record of my experience in the service of the United Nations in the Middle East. From August 1954 until November 1956 I was Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization, and then became commander of the United Nations Emergency Force. The story ends in the spring of 1957, when the Force took up its position along the Gaza Strip Demarcation Line and the International Frontier in the Sinai." (Burns was selected in part for his war experience; he had commanded the 5th Canadian Armoured Division and the 1st Canadian Corps during 1944 in Italy.) Table of Contents: 1-The Gaza raid of Feb. 1955; 2-The UN Truce Organization; 3-Exhange of Prisoners; 4-Jordan-Israel troubles in late 1954; 5-The Israeli policy of retaliation; 6-The Gaza Strip; 7-Egypt-Israel Tension Aug-Nov 1955; 8-Syria-Israel 1955; 9-Israel-Joran 1955-56; 10-Clashes Egypt-Israel; 11-the Armistace disintegrating May-Oct 1956; 12-The Armistice crumbles; 13-Israel invades Egypt Oct 1956; 14-The UN Emergency Force is formed; 15-Organizing in New York, 16-the UNEF in Port Said; 17-UNEF crosses the Sinai; 18-UNEF enters Gaza; 19-Conclusion. Burns concluded as he finished this book in late 1961: "In mid-1961, who can predict what is going to happen in the Middle East?" The story of the Canadian general responsible for the development and insertion of the UNEF into the Sinai just after the end the 1956 Suez Canal War. Burns claimed that he tried to be neutral in his actions, but he noted that he believes that both the Arabs and Israelis felt that he leaned towards defending and/or supporting the other camp during his tenure.

Presents A True Hero for Our Children!

An excellent book to read aloud to very young children, or for older elementary-aged children to read by themselves. Well written and accurate, there are are 12 beautifully rendered drawings depicting Tyndale's life. This is a book for every Christian family, and for every church library! Sadly, so many Christians do not know who Tyndale was. And yet it was by his sensitivity to God's leading, and his single-minded purpose to bring the Bible into the English language, so that "even the ploughboy" might be well acquainted with God's Word. that we have
our precious Bibles today and -- in fact, much more. Roughly 100 years after Tyndale lived, the Pilgrims came to what would be America. Before disembarking the Mayflower, they wrote up a basic system of government that has come to be known as the Mayflower Compact. Their ideas of freedom of conscience and self-government under God were the basis upon which this nation was founded. Yet where did they get these ideas? These "common people"--common ENGLISH people--were able to read the Bible for themselves in the language they used everyday. We owe a great debt to William Tyndale. His story is a fascinating one and there are many excellent books available, as well, for adults about his life. One thing I can promise you, once you are caught up in it, you will never look at the world in quite the same way. Highly recommended!

The gander was one of my favorite characters, but I also liked the way the Jess turns Meetchum, a never-do-well, around in his classes. It was a clever parallel of Jess and his goose, its mother, and his grandmother Hannah, all striving to co-exist. The sequel to this book, "The Mayday Rampage" is written in an entirely different style, but has the same characters of Jess, Molly, Meetchum, Mr.Goodban the teacher and his lover Vic. The magic moment between Jess and Meetchum never repeats, but their friendship has consequences not seen until the next book.

This is archetypal burns. In this case, one of his favourite characters, Big Baby, is sent to summer camp where amongst a population of mainly pre-pubescent boys he discovers sex and becomes caught up in its mysteries. Compounding the usual mysteries surrounding sex is the secret being kept hidden by one of the camp's counsellors. Big Baby does wind up solving the camp's secret, however, being an innocent, Big Baby does not come out of his experience fully comprehending what has just happened.

Although the adult reader will no longer find so much of what is happening to Big Baby mysterious, Burns manages to make us remember what it was like living in a world where much was hidden from us by adults and a sense of mystery underlied much of day-to-day life; a time when dirty jokes were something you laughed at nervously because you understood their taboo nature, but did not fully comprehend what they meant. And the reader is left wondering whether or not it is a good thing that life is no longer so mysterious after all.

Making human sense of the American Postmodern
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-07
Neveldine's scholarship is top-notch, his scope panoramic, his approach at once academic and deeply personal. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in Romanticism, Postmodernism, Queer Theory, Gender Studies, or Cultural Criticism. Neveldine makes sense of the seminal critics of the Postmodern while keeping up a steady but gentle attack on the sorts of false binaries and antiquated assumptions that still imprison academia today. From Wordsworth to Pynchon, from Shelley's Frankenstein to the music of Philip Glass, from humanity's struggle with nature to America's terror in the grip of AIDS, Neveldine paints a truly broad canvas with precious few strokes. Not only a thorough work of scholarship, but a marvelously engaging read.
