like Al Jolson and Jack Benny. Al in all a great read.

It is very much to the credit of the young art museum at Brigham Young University that they are publishing such fine catalogues
that not only enhance the Museum's large collection, but serve to fill voids in the compendium of art literature. This superb
catalogue, edited by Marian Wardle, gives evidence of the vision of Campbell B. Gray, the Director of the Museum: his presence
is palpable and promises a strong commitment to the art world.
Aptly subtitled 'The Legacy of Robert Henri, 1910 - 1945' this collection of works by women artists reflects the emphasis of the great teacher on the modernist perceptions of his pupils. The names of the artists sadly are not household names, but after reading and viewing this fine book it is embarassing to admit that fact. This is not an overview of 'lesser art' championing a feminist movement: this is an investigation into the art of women artists whose work is informed by their state of being women with all the powerful inferences that suggests.
Wisely, this catalogue is lead by essays written by contemporary women in the arts. Editor Wardle introduces the précis in 'Thoroughly Modern: The "New Women" Art Students of Robert Henri'; Sarah Burns offers 'fabricating the Modern: Women in Design'; Helen Langa writes 'American Women Printmakers: Adventurous Choices, Modernist Innovations'; Betsy Fahlman essays 'The Art Spirit in the Classroom: Educating the Modern Woman Artist'; Erika Doss offers 'Complicating Modernism: Issues of Liberation and Constraint among the Women Art Students of Robert Henri'; Gwendolyn Owens contributes 'Hidden Histories: Robert Henri's Female Students and the Market for American Art'; and finally Lois Palken Rudnick concludes the book with 'Modernizing Women: The New Woman and American Modernism'.
A broad spectrum of information, this: an even broader exposure to the visuals about which they write!
The photographs, which accompany the texts in appropriate places, create a sense of history that will be difficult to match in other books about this interesting subject. But the overwhelming part of the book is the art itself. These are paintings and prints of astonishingly fine quality, works that vie equally with those of men artists from this period. The reader makes refreshing discoveries on almost every page to the point of putting the Brigham Young University Art Museum on the travel itinerary for art lovers. And as with any exceptional, scholarly book there is a complete 'Artists' Biographies' section at the back of the book, a very fine compilation by Stephanie Andrews McNairy. This is an historically important, aesthetically rewarding book that deserves a large audience. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, January 06

American Women Modernists...was stunningly beautiful, and contains fresh information, including many illustrations, about
a long over-looked topic.
I particularly liked the extensive listing of "Artists' Biographies", and the very helpful "Notes sections. The nine-page Bibliography is an excellent resource for those of us interested in learning about so many talented contributors to American art.
A "must-read" for all art collectors!

I am an author and a poet and during a leisure trip to Las Vegas, Nevada with my family, we were able to obtain a front row
seat at the Gladys Knight Show. It was awesome. What a display of great talent! Reading her book is fascinating. The historical
perspective of her story is amazing. She states how she believes diabetes eventually crept upon her, and why. However, she
has it under control. The ways in which she blends her songs into her treatment plan is humbling. For example, she uses the
heading in one section of the book, "Neither One Of Us Wants to Say Goodbye to the Cheeseburger," where she discusses fatty
foods and how to avoid fast foods. The pictures of her family are wonderful. Her philosophy of dealing with positive people,
exercising daily, and burning calories is a formula for success. The final section of the book deals with a variety of mouth-watering
dishes and recipes. They are all healthy with her special blend of spices, herbs, and juices, with a low fat touch. This
is an easy and relaxing book to read. It's a great treat to and for lowering one's blood sugar and staying healthy. I highly
recommend it!!!
Thank you Mrs. Knight

At Home With Gladys Knight is a wonderful, inspiring book. I bought this book for my parents who both have diabetes. After
years of trying to get them to follow doctor recommended diets it is a relief to have a book that inspires my parents to not
only care about their diet, but their physical fitness as well.
Mrs. Knight has created a quick and easy read that is full of motivation. This book gets 5 stars in the Murphy household.

Too bad this is out of print! It was one of my favorites when I was a baby. Our family's copy is so old and beat up from
being read thousands of times, I can't give it to my daughter. I wish it were in print! My dad actually photocopied the
pages and had it bound at Kinko's so my daughter could have a copy of this book. It's bulky and awkward, but she loves it
as much as my brother and I did.

This is such a wonderful book, and I'm only hoping I can find it for my daughter, as it's out of print. This was my favorite
book when I was little, and the melodic prose is as as memorable as the beautiful illustrations by Eloise Wilkin. Here it
is thirty years later and I can still quote the beginning: "These are the things that baby hears when he listens hard with
his little ears." A wonderful book for bedtime.

An Amazing Era

Thomas Burns' BARBARIANS WITHIN THE GATES OF ROME manages something quite difficult. It is a very readable book that manages
to be scholarly but still quite enjoyable. Anybody who is interested in this era in western civilization would enjoy this
book. The usual view of the decline of Rome-- that it fell for some sort of "moral" reason --is very inacurate and this
book presents the real truth of this pivotal era in a very entertaining manner. Burns is the rare academic whose writing
is as lucid as it is learned, and this book admirably displays that. If you've never given this era a serious look,
this book is a great introduction. I've been interested in the early years of Christianity for many years, and I loved this
book.

In the 25 years since I graduated I never learned as much about the university as I did in reading this book. Burns tells
the story of the university in the way of a grandfather. I was enthralled through the entire story. That is unusual for
me but I found his story compelling and the scolarship was outstanding. There were sources that were special. His handling
of the Erskine affair was delicate at best. I recommend this book to anyone that is interested in the Notre Dame that extends
past the football field.

The fight for patient rights in breast cancer treatment

Beyond, Slash, Burn, and Poison explains much about breast cancer and the history of its treatment as it chronicles women's
long struggles for the right to have a voice in the treatment of breast cancer. Author Marcy Knopf-Newman focuses on the
experiences of five women -- 19th century novelist Frances Burney, Rachel Carson, Betty Ford, Rose Kushner, and Audre Lorde
-- each of whose conduct comprised a major step in empowering women with breast cancer. The book shows that struggling to
make our voices heard can change the consciousness not only of victims of oppression, but of the dominant culture as well.
Over the years, work for social change does succeed!
In the early days of breast cancer treatment, women experienced a terrifying conflict, here best illustrated in the experiences of Carson and Kushner. Though fully aware that the power over their health lay with the establishment that valued deference, discretion, and being nice, they honored their deep inner need to investigate treatment options, speak out, challenge the medical establishment, and be honest and open about the disease.
Thanks mostly to the work of people like these, medicine began to evolve in the early seventies so that information has become increasingly available to patients, multiple options for the treatment of breast cancer have been developed, and patients' needs are increasingly attended to. The book is not just a history; reading it makes one feel committed to becoming informed and assertive in exploring medical treatment options

Marcy Knopf-Newman's new book on breast cancer stories is an important intervention in this oft avoided topic. From Rachel
Carson's "public silence," to Audre Lorde's very public examination of her own breast cancer, Ms. Knopf-Newman writes a history
of mid- to late-twentieth century approaches to the act of telling stories about breast cancer. What makes Ms. Knopf-Newman's
book so important, however, is the arc or plot of its telling: from enforced silence and acquiescence to the prevailing dogmas
of medical science at mid-century, and the near complete and unquestioned predominance of the Halsted radical mastectomy,
to the emergence of a critical questioning of medical practices and procedures as revolutionary medical practitioners, feminists,
and even public figures begin to enable ordinary people to see breast cancer in new ways and seek new forms of treatment.
Ms. Knopf-Newman is espeically good on Betty Ford and the public impact of her cancer and treatment, as well as on the history
of Rose Kushner, a local Maryland activist who brushed history against the grain with her insistance on the short-comings
of the Halsted procedure even before the US Congress. This is a well research, well reasoned, and well told story - one that
is not told often enough, certainly. And it's refreshing, as well, because it's told in a compelling and straightforward language,
one that does not rely on any overly wrought theoretical language. And finally, it's amazing, too, just for its sense of awe
and admiration for the figures it treats - Carson, Ford, Kushner, Lorde. This is a book of heroes, not victims, and deserve
a wide audience.

visiting all the schools that I am interested is not physically or financially possible. Purchasing a few of these guide books
has allowed me to get an insiders view of the school and feel as if I were actually talking to current students.

The College Prowler Guide to Bowdoin College gave me a really good perspective to what my experience would be like if I attended
the picturesque New England college. The 160+ plus guidebook read more like a conversational piece in a newspaper then a
guidebook. College Prowler combines student input, student author editorial, facts, and a grade together perfectly to give
any prospective student a all inclusive look into what college life in Suburban Maine is really like.
The detail in which College Prowler and it's author for the book went into is startling. No other resource on the market is nearly as comprehensive with as many student opinions packed into one place. You can tell that the author pained himself in making sure every point of view is represented in the book in order to paint the best picture of how four years at Bowdoin will change your life.
Read every word of every section. If you do, there is no way to overlook this school; Bowdoin combines so many great things into one place for it's 1600+ student body. The best concept conveyed in this book is the passion and zest for life that the student body has and how it works so well with the faculty, staff, and administration.
You will not be disappointed that you bought this book!!! It made me want to attend Bowdoin so much.

"You're ours Grady.....This is just the beginning."
The horrors of high school are real; just ask Cameron Grady.
Freshman year at Madison High School has been the most miserable experience of Cameron's life. The bullying begins the first day of class. Rich Patterson and the rest of his jock friends zero in their radar and Cameron becomes #1 on their hit list.
The "Red Coats" taunt Cameron, calling him Cameron Diaz and stalking him in the hallways. High school becomes a war zone for Grady. The lines between reality and fiction begin to blur, and Cameron finds himself "checking out" from time to time. Cameron also begins to experiment with fire; an obsession that proves to be dangerous.
Unlike most stories, Cameron's does not have a happy ending, but it's real - it's life. Life is not always full of happy endings.
Suzanne Phillips has created a gripping novel that discusses extremely tough issues. Cameron deals with both physical and sexual abuse, bullying, and post-traumatic stress. Many teenagers may be unfamiliar with post-traumatic stress disorder, and this novel does an excellent job of shedding some light on the subject.
BURN is a well-written story that may be difficult to read at times, but the message is clear. Teenagers face hardships on a daily basis. These problems can range from getting into a fight with their parents to being subjected to some kind of abuse. They all want someone they can confide in - Cameron finds that person, but it's a little too late for him.

Cameron Grady is a loner, and with good reason. His freshman year has just been one misery after another ever since he went
to the school's sports orientation night and the coach thought he was a girl. Now he's known as Cameron Diaz and forced to
"map out his day with survival being the only objective." But there's physical and mental survival, and after an incident
in the boys' locker room, Cameron's psyche doesn't survive, and he commits an unspeakable act against the boy who witnessed
his shame.
This is a hard novel to write about. Not because it isn't powerful and challenging, but because it is so utterly terrifying. It's a middle of the night, one-sitting sort of book. It's completely realistic, but you wish it weren't. I want to feel great compassion for Cameron Grady, but I'm not sure he deserves my compassion. How can a character be both the hero and the villain? This is the balance beam that Suzanne Phillips has her readers walk. Burn, along with Living Dead Girl and Freeze Frame, will probably be amongst the most talked about literature of the season.
