This is a book detailing the true historical account of the Grace Brown Murder (done in by Chester Gillette). Occurring at the beginning of the century, Theodore Drieser based his novel, AMERICAN TRAGEDY, on newspaper accounts of the murder and trial. Later, Hollywood used this same story for A PLACE IN THE SUN - an Academy Award winner. Joseph Brownell has spent decades researching the case and getting (never before allowed) family interviews. He still lectures about the case. The book is now in a revised print

Anyone who a) lives in upstate New York (as I do), b) is a fan of Theodore Dreiser, or c) watches old movies is sure to know about the famous Chester Gillette murder case. The incident was turned into the famous novel, 'An American Tragedy" and later into a movie. This book is excellent because it gives all the details of Chester's life, his trial, and love letters written between him and his girlfriend whom he later murdered. For people reading the novel, which I am doing now, it is also helpful because there is a chart telling who each of the characters was actually based on in real life. This book is out of print nationwide, but you can still find it here in upstate New york in giftshops or bookstores. I got my copy at the Herkimer Jail where Gillette was kept in 1907. They still have tours here.

Well researched; well written

One of my favorite movies is "A Place in the Sun" starring Montgomery Cliff, Elizabeth Taylor and Shelly Winters. It is based on one of my favorite fictional books, "An American Tragedy," by Theodore Dreiser. Both are inspired by the Gillette murder case of 1906, the subject of "Adirondack Tragedy," a factual, deeply researched and well written book. In addition to presenting the murder case in a straight forward and non-sensational manner, the authors of this book also detail how Dreiser's novel and the movie diverged from the facts, the myths that have sprung from the case and live on to this day, and the subsequent lives of the individuals concerned. Even if you are not familiar with the novel and movie, you will find this an interesting book. One area I wish the authors had covered is whether under today's legal system (especially regarding disclosure and rights of the alleged criminal and forensic and DNA sciences) the result of the trial would have been the same as it was 100 years ago.

I am heartbroken that this book is out of print. It is, with the possible exception of the Alcoholics Anonymous "Big Book," the most helpful book on addiction recovery I have ever read. The section on honesty alone is worth the price of the book. If you can get hold of a copy, do yourself and favor and don't let the opportunity pass you by.

In my opinion, and I am an addict and an avid reader as well. This had to be the best book aound that I knew of to begin to explain to non-addicts about addiction. Being such a hard concept to grasp, even for those of who have been given the gift of addiction, I gave this book out often. I am now looking for 5 copies so if anyone can help me, it's for a very good cause. I feel it most important and advantagous to educate people on what addiction really is and who better to explain that then the addict.

This was one of the first machine applique books I ever bought. We get Eleanor Burns TV show "Quilt in a Day" on Saturday mornings on a local PBS station. After watching some of the episodes relating to the "Applique in a Day" book I decided I just had to try it. If you are a hand appliquer and have never tried machine applique, buy this book. If you have never done any applique and the thought scares you to death, you really need to buy this book. Eleanor makes it so fast and simple that you will be wondering why you hesitated.

This book gives you lots of fun and easy to do techniques in the "lessons". It goes into detail about making simple dimensional flowers and machine embroidered stems with pearl cotton. (Tip: Besides embroidery floss and pearl cotton you can try thin ribbon for that stem technique. All of her instructions are step by step as if she were sitting right next to you.

She also shows you lots of ideas for making the finished appliqued quilt blocks into things other than quilts. Some of the things you can use the blocks for are: single and multiple block wall hangings, wedding gifts, tote bags, table runners, and pillow covers. The single block projects are great for those of us who like to finish a project quickly and go on to the next.

Even if you have never done any type of quilting or applique in your life this book will have you making and more importantly FINISHING projects in no time at all. Her directions are clear, with lots of charts, diagrams and pictures. Although the larger, multi-block projects will take longer than "a day" you will still be pleased to see how fast the blocks can be finished.

The highest rating that Amazon.com lists is a five but if I could, I'd have given this book a ten.

I love each of her books that I own, especially this one!

Eleanor Burns is my favorite author/teacher for quilting. I love each of her books that I own, but especially this one. Most of her sewing techniques are simple, but they are real time savers that I would never have thought of myself. Being a mother of seven, I'm always interested in saving time. "Applique in a Day" is different from many of her earlier books, so I was excited to buy it.

I have made three blocks from "Applique in a Day". The first one I chose to make was the grape vine wreath. I love purple, but the main reason I chose this block was the dimension. The grapes are made of yo-yo's, so they stick out from the background block. I also had fun with the twisty embroidered vines. I used to have a grape vine in my backyard and this block really reminds me of the fun we had picking, eating, and making jam from the grapes.

The next block I chose to make was the flower basket. Again, the dimension of the basket and flowers both give such interest to the block. The basket is shaped by making pleats and the small flowers are made from yo-yo's. The large flowers are rouched. This was my first attempt at this technique, so I wasn't sure if I would like it. Eleanor's instructions in the book make it very simple to do; she provides great directions, and helpful pictures. I was so pleased and the flowers look great!

The third block I chose to make was the Distlefink. I love this block for its European look. The tulips are very unusual, and the bird is beautiful. I especially like Eleanor's suggestion to use a pearl for the bird's eye. There is little embroidery, but it gives the picture just the right finish. In the book there are instructions for sewing the embroidery on the sewing machine.

The remaining blocks in this book are as striking as the three I have completed. Some of my other favorite blocks are the fruit basket and the holly wreath. I am eager to finish the entire quilt.

Sparta has to solve another crime, but this time its on the Moon.

Sparta is a biologically enhanced woman who is on a personal mission to find her parents or the man who killed them. In order to do this she takes on a new identity, Ellen Troy, and rises to the rank of investigator in the Board of Space Control. With the help of her childhood friend, Blake Redfield, she begins to unravel the mysteries behind her biological enhancements and the group that calls themselves the Free Spirits.

In this second volume, Preuss does an excellent job of continuing the suspense and drama that made the first book so intriguing. Not only does each book hold a mystery in and of itself, but the series as a whole is a mystery in which the reader picks up clues along the way. Quite an interesting concept that I've not seen in the mystery/suspense genre. However, this technique does seem to lend itself to sci-fi where the reader is used to stories that continue past a single book.

The perfect series for young adult girls

I love that Sparta's intelligence is what we see as her "super power" along with her technological "improvements". She is not a heroine who has "super strength" but rather super character. The plot is fast paced keeps you guessing and defineltly can hold even the video gamers attention. Only complaint; the book describes Sparta with blue eyes not hazel which is on the cover and her body is described not quite as thin and "top heavey" as on the cover.

I found this book to be a really excellent story. There were many places where I did not want to put the book down, so I made time to finish the section I was reading. Several times I exclaimed, "wow" aloud while reading on the Metro. It is easy to image-in what the author was writing, so I felt as though I was right there. I am looking forward to finding and reading venus prime 1 thru 5!

At first I felt put off by two things. First, the picture of the woman on the cover, while appealing, did cause me to refrain from leaving the book lying around for my 8-year old daughter to see. This book does not need sex to sell. Second, I was put off by the fact that Arthur Clarke was not authoring it. But I gave it a shot anyway, and I must say, I was very pleasantly surprised.

They recently re-ran this series on RFD TV and, being a new quilter, I hadn't seen it before. Was so glad to find the companion book. There are 4 different blocks in this quilt and the instructions in this book is for each individual block with project ideas for each (table runners, lap quilts, etc.,) and then for putting the whole thing together if you want a full size quilt. As always, Eleanor Burns instructions are clear, concise and easy to understand. Happy Quilting! KC

I saw this quilt at a local quilt show and realized it would be perfect for my daughter's vacation home near Yosemite. Of course I did! Sane reflection did not enter into it. But I'm going to make it for her because (wait for the drum roll) it's designed by ELEANOR BURNS! That means the directions will be clear and it will sew up as promised.
Not to worry.

Solutions to some of the nonstandard problems you may face
Helpful Votes: 36 out of 36 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-17
The title is a bit misleading, in that the book is nearly all about Javascript. Broken down into a collection of short tutorials, each of which solves a specific problem, they are all understandable. The problems solved are not general in nature, in that not everyone needs to know how to solve them. However, they can be considered members of the category of unusual problems with a non-obvious solution. You may never confront the specific problem, but if you do, then the solution is here for you.
Some of the problems solved are:

* How to create a pop under window.
* How to use a table to create an image with rounded corners.
* How to create printable pages where the banner ads are absent.
* How to redirect the print of a page so that another is printed.
* How to prevent a page from being cached on the client machine.
* How to create an OnError error handling page.

In general, the statement of the problem and the solution take up less than three pages. With very little code to explain, the solutions are easy to understand. I have been teaching and programming in Javascript for over six years and yet I learned several things from the book. To sweeten the deal even further, all of the source code, graphics and other data used in the book are freely available from the companion web site ...
Depending on what you are creating, you may never have a use for the solutions in this book. However, if you are faced with one of these problems, then the solution is well in hand and you will be happy with the way it is constructed.

I've never read a bad comic by Charles Burns; The art is incredible and his storytelling is subtle, smart, and engaging. I consider him one of the top five cartoonists working today (Dan Clowes, R. Crumb, Adrienne Tomine, and Chris Ware being the others) and "Big Baby" is another fine example of his talent. As always with contemporary comic books, it's a bit expensive for about a half hour of reading, but it inspires immediate rereading and is just to good to miss. Highly recommended.

I have been a devout reader of Burn's Black Hole comic since I first found it on the shelves a couple of years ago. That he is a mesmerizing artist goes without saying. Black Hole has a very meandering plot at times, and it gets somewhat overshadowed by it's technical virtuosity. Big Baby, while it has less scope, is much more concise and places the reader directly in the path of evil. The final story in this volume "Blood Club" is a really haunting tale that I believe is his best work. One minor note, the image above is from Blood Club but it is not the actual cover on the book...It has Big Baby playing with some toys.

Graphic storyteller Charles Burns hits his artistic and narrative stride in the three immaculately rendered black and white comics stories reprinted in this beautifully bound, library-quality volume from Fantagraphics. Originally serialized in alternative weekly newpapers in the '80s, CURSE OF THE MOLE MEN, TEEN PLAGUE, and BLOOD CLUB portray the suburbs of "Leave It to Beaver", seen through the eyes of child who can't turn away the violence and seething sexuality behind the facade. Burns is possibly the finest draftsman to come out the 80s comics underground, and integrates a Bauhaus design sense with a flair for Fifties EC horror. Highly recommended for fans of EIGHTBALL, Psychotronic films, and anyone who grew up in Fifties or early Sixties suburbia.

There is no way to describe College Prowler's books other than amazing. Whether you're already in college, still deciding on one to go to, or deciding which ones to apply to, College Prowler's books are probably the best asset you can have.
It's the only guide written with information from students who actually go there, instead of just what the school wants you to think. College Prowler's guides can tell you everything: where to hang out, where to live, how much money to have on hand, where to park, how much drugs/alcohol is being passed around, how attractive your peers will be, and just about anything else you could want to know about a school.

Unlike most college guidebooks available about particular schools, this review goes far beyond the statistics...allowing the reader to get a real glimpse at life at Boston University. Adhering to a "by students, for students" attitude, this edition is aimed at high school seniors who are uncertain whether a particular university will suit their lifestyle, preferences, and individual needs. With a generous dose of humor and honest commentary by the author about her experiences as a student, this is an excellent choice for any potential student.

As a big fan of John Michne's website, I became very interested when I heard this book was coming out. I ordered it right away and I was not disappointed. The are a few books out today on the subject of boatbuilding for the home hobbyist that are really fantastic and this ranks right up there along with Ted Moore's Canoecraft, John Brooks' Glued Lapstrake Boatbuilding. The author's combine boatbuilding skill and documentation skill which is not an easy or common feat. They have done a great job in documenting the build of the H. Dwight Grant design 16' Guideboat "Virginia" so home boatbuilders like me can follow right along. I would not have considered building a boat like this without this book. The book includes all of the steps and precise details on how to reproduce this great craft. Many tips and techniques are shown that will insure high quality if carefully followed. The authors approach is one of setting a very high standard instead of mass appeal simplicity. The sanding stick idea is ingeniously simple for sanding rolling bevels on stems and ribs but I had never heard of it before. The sections on seat caning and brass metalwork clearly illustrate that it is something within my reach. I particularly liked that the authors were faithful to the Grant design "Virginia" lines as precisely documented by John Gardner. It is a great tribute to Grant, Gardner, Kenneth Durant and anyone who appreciates this special piece of history. I am sure they would be happy that new guideboats will continue to emerge from workshops and garages and be used all over the world rather than slowly fading away as museum pieces only. The Adirondack Guideboat design is really not for a beginning boatbuilder who is looking to build a first boat. It will turn out much better if you have already built a few boats. Don't miss out on this book though just because you are not ready to build one. No other type of book exists that I know of on how to build this remarkable boat.

im no expert on any type of boat, nor a writer.

i enjoyed this book quite a bit. its amaizing what you learn that you never ever heard of before.
i would definatly like to build one of these boats,, but,i must first build a smaller less complicated dinghy type first. to get a bit of practice. after all, thats alot of money in wood and epoxy,FG so,, id want to be a little more confident before i begin one of my own.
the book has great pictures, and the text..... well you begin to admire the builders that came before us.. (i always do) the craftmanship of these boats is truly amaizing. and they did alot of it with old school tools.

i cant recomend this book enough. i buy two types of boat books.
one type shares building information with me,techniques,tips,ect,ect..,so i might build a beauty of my own somday.
the second reason i buy boat books,,is for the history of boating in general. and this book has a full load of both kinds of information.

its nice to have it on the shelf.

This is an absolutely excellent book! If you have any interest in Adirondack guideboats or in strip building canoes, you owe it to yourself to buy this book. The authors do a masterful job of explaining - in excrutiating detail - how to build a reproduction of a guideboat that is currently in a museum. They leave no stone unturned and describe the process very clearly with lots of photographs. They do a great job as well of weaving throughout the chapters the history of guideboats and their construction. Much of what they describe can be used for building other boats as well. This is a must have if you're into boat building or guideboats or the Adirondacks. It's probably the best book available on this topic!

Robert Frost said "All the fun's in how you say a thing." While most poets may not describe the extremely difficult process of crafting powerful, often painful images and ideas out of our rather plain vanilla language 'fun', one feels Ms. Beeder has made the sacrifice and we are the better for her efforts. She reminds us that there can be power in words during an age when all it seems society reacts to is 'some war set fire on a massacre hill' as the poet so beautifully puts it. I believe the highest compliment I can pay to a poet is that their words travel with me. Several passages from Ms. Beeder's have already bored into my overcrowded consciousness and now I look forward to 'traveling the damp side of high roads at dusk."

The title of this review, from the poem "Fever" serves as an example of some of the precise and beautiful lyric moments in Beeder's book, Burn the Field. without a doubt, this is one of the better books of poetry I've encountered in the past several years. The poems are intricate works of rich image and delicate language and they cover an amazing range of subject matter and tonal qualities. Most striking is Amy Beeder's ability to create complicated symbiotic forms for her work. The variety of structural elements that frame the poem's lush language are invariably useful and appropriate. Enjoy!

I have been following Amy Beeder's marvelous work in magazines for years, so what a joy it is to finally have a collection of her poems in hand. She is a poet's poet, one of a very few contemporary writers who is truly a master at her craft, with a skilled ear for meter, an eye for vibrant (and sometimes, disturbing) images and an unusually rich word palate. Her poems are a resonant tapestry of sound. It's a delicious experience to read them aloud. What's more, Beeder's subjects are always striking -- from the arrogant Pasteur to a runaway train "flashing/ like a long black casket" to a dead Haitian girl in a yellow dress "on a heap of street sweepings high/as a pyre, laid on snarled wire and dented rim." This book is wonderful.
