I made the mistake of ordering this because from the description here ... it seems that this fairytale is the highest level (and thus entirely in Japanese). However the publishers website mentions 4-5 coming out. Do not waste your $$$ with this as you dont learn many words. It seems a bit easy even for little kids.

They're getting there...

I used the 3rd edition of this guide on my first trip to South Africa in 1999. Back then, this guide would recommend places to stay in the most dangerous streets of Jo'burg, and guarantee the readers that the area was even safe to walk around at night. A taxi driver in Jo'burg told us he was appalled at their reccommendations on where to stay and where to go out, saying they were simply too dangerous, especially for white backpackers. The guide also had an aggressive attitude towards any predominantly white bars or clubs dismissing them as "artificial"... as if the only option was to go out in Shebeens.

Racial issues apart, they seem to be reversing this trend, and have been doing constant progress. This edition recommends mostly well-located places and acknowledges that some areas are just too dangerous to stay in. Otherwise neglected entertainment areas are being put into this guide too.

But the issue is that this guide is mostly useful in planning your trip, by telling how to get from one city to another, and what are the costs like, etc. It is also more useful in smaller towns than the larger ones. The fact is that there isn't a 100% reliable guide to South Africa, but this update is about as good as it can get.

For the past several years it's been hard to find really good horror short stories. Most of what's been published just plain stinks! But thankfully, some good fiction (such as "Night Visions #12") does get published from time to time. 3 stories from Simon Clark, 3 from Mark Morris, and 2 from P.D. Cacek will keep you entertained with good writing and interesting plots.

What about His American service?

This book is interesting because O'Sullivan Burke's early life in Ireland and South America are revealed in detail. Howeever O'S Burke in the 15th NY Engineers and as a key member of the Fenian Brotherhood in America are hardly touched. In fact O'Sullivan Burke is identified as a member of the Brother Shearer's Circle in New York--actually that was Lt. Colonel Dennis Burke, 88th NY. O'Sullivan Burke was active with the Washington, D.C. Circle---since he was stationed at the Navy Yard for over a year. Also there is no mention of his relationship with Michael O'Brien, Manchester Martyr.

A Boater's Miscellany

If the boat-building bug has bitten you hard enough that you've already gotten more than a few "how-to-build the Pineapple Snipe on your lunch break in one week for spare change" tomes under your belt, and progressed into the realm of plans by Gardiner, the practical wisdom of Dynamite Payson, and maybe (gasp!) even taken a saw to some wood, then this book will be a pleasant companion on an end table by the fireside. One that you can dip into at random from time to time, soaking up the esoteric as well as the more mundane gleanings of Culler's lifetime spent messing about with boats. Don't expect to learn HOW to build a boat from this book, and you won't be disappointed. Instead, enjoy how Culler shares with you how to approach building boats you can use, how building meshes into a boat's usability, maintability, and enjoyability. Culler never goes "zen" on the reader, nor waxes on about how materials and methods "back in the day" were perfecto and today's not worth squat. Instead, his writing lets the discipline and insight of a Master shine through as an extension of the quietly enthusiastic sharing and tutoring he gave so freely of in his lifetime, and pours out a cornucopia of boat builder's lore of rare quality which helps one grasp the WHY of older techniques (both high-end and mass-market) and how to fit newer materials and constraints on construction into context with what went before. I wish I could rate this book higher than three stars, as I really like it (for what it is). But the muddy photos, small-sized drawings, lack of annotations, and failure to include plans and/or photos illustrating each of the boat types and construction techniques discussed in the text make a higher rating impossible. Hopefully somebody will address all of the discrepancies in a revised edition, and print it on quality paper. Meanwhile, if you're ready for it, and can accept this book on its own terms, then by all means buy it: you won't be disappointed.

Not The Most Believable Storyline Or Likeable Main Character But You Will Enjoy The Book
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-18
Matthew Daniels, the main character of this book you certainly will feel no sympathy for, you undoubtedly won't like him much at all and even the minor characters you probably won't care about that much either. The storyline also isn't the most smoothly flowing nor very believable, these factors are why I only rate Redemption three stars but I will say these factors aside, you will keep reading it until you reach the last page and enjoy the journey getting there along the way.

The basic plot is a London prison governor Matthew Daniels one night gets annoyed that his wife isn't home as they have an important dinner to go to that he had told her about a few times. He does start to worry about her throughout the night so eventually phones the police early the next morning. The thing is though, he despises the police and thinks their incompetent as they pretty much blamed him for his former wife's death but he reluctantly calls them in anyway. After they leave he gets a phone call telling him he was very stupid to call the police and if he doesn't come up with half a million dollars or talks to the police again Charlotte and Eyelash (their unborn baby) will not be coming home alive.

This story is written as a number of narratives thorough the eyes of Matthew, Charlotte, the kidnappers and people Matthew turns to for help.

VERY BASIC

This is a VERY basic introduction. It is a large book and has a large number of beautiful color pics of the artwork, but when it comes to learning about art in my opinion this book is on a high-school level. This book introduces very general concepts of art history.
