A Brilliant Revisitation of the Jazz Age

Review Date: 2005-06-06
Burke weaves an incredible tale of love, social conflict and the thirst for realizing our dreams. His voice is masterful and his characters beautifully developed in a way that will make the Jazz Age with all its loud glory and hidden melancholy come to life for the reader. The most striking aspect of the book, however, is its ability to solve the mysteries of a different Jazz Age novel in a way that will change the classic in the reader's mind forever. Burke explores the many levels of Fitzgerald's masterpiece and deepens them by exploring all the directions in which the book could turn, opening every mystery and digging deep into its essence.

"Something Gorgeous" is a delight to read but it will also take the reader on a journey through the history of the US and Europe in the 20's as well as the secrets and nuances of one of America's greatest literary classics.

Great American Novel
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-25
This novel is unique in its style and handling of subject. The author captures a time in America where want and desires tended to get the best of people. Through intricate back-story Burke weaves a tale of underlying caution. Often using love, lust and greed as the guide. Something Gorgeous is part romantic love story, often hedonistic. And part a glimpse into a history worth revisiting. It is a fine example of an author doing his homework, as his knowledge is infinite and thorough.
The characters are multidimensional, written so finely as though describing the fantasy version of oneself (both good and bad). At times disturbing, but thoroughly poignant the reader is left with a desire not to fall prey to the perils so well described in the novel. This is a moral tale, however, Burke did an excellent job of never shoving that into the readers face. Rather he let the reader find for herself the values that lie in all of us.
If you are looking for a story to get swept away in, you'll find it in this book. If you're looking for a tale of love lost and the lengths to which one will go to regain love, this novel is it. If you're looking to learn more of a time so drenched in World history, this book is it. Burke created a tale for all the masses to enjoy, while subtly mixing in the importance of being who you are and accepting that with out fear.

Something Gorgeous - is just that.

"Stringer" grabbed me from the start. Mr. Burke puts a new and welcome spin on the crime/fiction genre. Terry Randall struck me as a Clarisse Starling-type character turned photo-journalist. It makes for an interesting combination and a great read. Can't wait for the next installment in the Terry Randall series

Love this character-Terry Randel. Ex-cop and free-lance video reporter gives the author a lot of running room to "drag" us through the tuff steeets of Chicago. Having been in law enforcement all my life, I can tell you that I had trouble putting this fast read down and am looking forward to the next adventure of Randel's life. This character felt like my ex-partner! This author nailed the underlying workings of the city. Bombings, arsons, death, sex and familiar locations gave me a non-stop fun, yet pending disaster roller coaster read.

The Stringer packs a punch with its keep you guessing plot.
A new hero emerges with Terry Randall action hero and his son
delving into Chicago's most notorious crimes that are beginning
to paralyze the city.
Using ingenious methods Terry uses his police background and knowledge of the city to match wits with the criminal element
that has so far escaped police efforts to apprehend them.
A real page turner!

Patrick Burke take the city in a way that none other author has. he shows it at its truest form through the eyes of an ex cop turned Freelance Video Journalist. The Raw sex, violence, and intrigue to be found in the Big city are entwined around a great mystery, one that can not be put down once began. The multiple use of Chicago land marks, makes it easy to identify and creates an immage anyone can see. it is a true favorite of anyone who is or isnt involved in Law enforcement.

The action is non-stop in Burkes new thriller. It's about time someone wrote a book about such a dangerous profession. Free lance video reporters (STRINGERS) are the backbone of our news industry these days.
I like the way Burke delivers on such sensitive issues of the day like illigal immigrants, gays, and abortion with such startling uncensored action. His characters bare a remarkable resemblence to many of todays newsmakers. The story is not only clever ,but the suprise twist at the end caught me completely off guard... Can't wait for Burke's next release "Slaughter of Innocence".

From casual newspaper and magazine reading, I was aware Trans Fat were bad for you, but it was eye opening to realize how bad. Severson writes in a very calm, factual way. Also, there is just enough detail (versus deadly dull level of detail!). It is a very quick read, and I would recommend it for all harried moms and dads as we make alot of choices while pounding the aisles at the market, and I know I have changed my shopping choices based on the information I learned in this book.

This is the most well written and researched book that I've found on the subject of Trans Fat. Severson's tone is non-alarmist and spiced with humor. She presents scientific facts and research in an understandable and immediately practical fashion. This doesn't have all "the sky is falling! the sky is falling" rhetoric of Fast Food Nation, and for that reason alone is utterly believable--and sobering.

I love this book!

This book is presented in an easy-to-read format and is full of great information and fabulous recipes. I finally understand what trans fat is and why it is so bad for you. The recipe for Chicken-Tarragon Potpies is so delicious and easy to make it is going straight into my Family Favorites file. This book should be on everyone's cookbook shelf.

I am well-versed on the chemistry here and the book is right on target there. A nice explaination for the intelligent lay-person. What was useful to me was the exposure of all the places this stuff can be found. A few surprises there. Thanks! The last factor is the cookbook. Can't say I have tested that part, but it is great to have yummy stuff that is more healthy. Short and easy to read.

I learned a lot of ways to cook my food diffrently after reading this book and how to shop for food. This book has brought awarness to the number one killer in our fast food world. Some of the more common foods have trans fatty particles just waiting to enter your blood stream. Highly recommend.

For an action packed, emotionally charged book that is hard to put down, I recommend Alien Earth. For a fantasy fiction novel, the story is flavored with a sense of realism as you find yourself picturing how you would act in the impossible situation that the main characters find themselves in. I highly recommend this book to all of my friends. I really enjoyed it, and I rarely take to science fiction novels.

It is important that you stay with this book, as it seems a little slow at first, but as I was to find out, character development very important later on in the story. I enjoyed this book because it puts a different twist on the alien invasion of earth. The aliens even have a special use for Disney World. Hope you enjoy this book as much I did. Just a note, I read the last 100 pages in one sitting, as I didn't want to put it down.

The Annals of Ireland by the Four Masters is a treasured find for any researcher. O'Donovans translation was excellent for the day. He was actually the second to publish the annals for the 12th to the 17th centuries. A few years before O'Donovan, in 1846, Owen Connellan published the first ever translation of the annals into English, plus the family name location map. There had been quite a competition between the two to come out with the first edition of the annals. I have both translations in hardbound editions. They sit side by side on our shelves. It is quite interesting to compare the two.

This text is a crucial element in the genealogical history of many old Irish and Scotish families (who can trace their roots to Ireland). This text includes the Latin, Gaelic and English translations of the original books. Although the beginning volumes were written about 500 to 1000 years after the events occurred, the stories that one finds included there are fascinating, and add to any family history (provided you can trace back that far!) a depth that is difficult to find elsewhere. I post a web site that traces the roots of the Buchanan clan, and have used a copy of the text available from the NY Public Library as one of my sources. Numerous individuals have e-mailed me asking for sources to purchase this text, and it would be helpful if it would be reprinted. For now, ask your local library to get the book for you on interlibrary loan from the NY Public Library (or others). Needless to say, I highly recommend this text and would be the first to purchase it if it were reprinted.

'The Annals of the Four Masters' is one of the most important documents for students of Irish, British, European and ancient history. You will not find much of this history in your high school or even college text books. John O'Donovan, a 19th century antiquarian undertook the enormous task of interpreting this account of Irish history as written in gaelic by the Four Masters, legendary scribes from a Donegal monastery. On the left hand page you get the original gaelic text, on the right the english translation, some anecdotes are in Latin. The anecdotes are as rich in reading as the text and include some by the late 19th century historian Charles O'Conor of Belengare, Ireland. REPRINT THESE VOLUMES....for here lie the dormant pages of Irish, British, Norman, Saxon, Scotish, Iberian, Hiberian, Milesian, Pictish and Gaelic history and perhaps the key to unraveling are current problems. The following review was done by the National Parenting Center upon awarding the Common Sense Parenting Book as well as the Common Sense Parenting Audiotape with its coveted Seal of Approval.

"When it comes to reading advice about parenting, what we've discovered is that parents like to be spoken to in a direct, common sense manner. No need to use flowery or highbrowed language, just give me some tips and I'll take it from there. Like the name implies, this book and the like-titled audiotape delivers the goods. Common sense tips and good ideas presented in an easy to read and listen to format. Parents mentioned that they really liked the written exercises which serve to help reinforce what you've learned. Here is a logical sensible approach to parenting, featuring good examples that our parents give a thumbs ups."

This excellent book offers parents solutions to common problems, as well as tips for positive guidance and effective praise. The program seems to be designed to encourage parents to expand on their current parenting techniques, rather than abandoning current practices in favor of a "new method." It boosts parents' esteem as well as giving tips on how to boost children's self-esteem. It sits on my shelf next to "1-2-3 Magic!"

a very readable and practical update on sports nutrition
Helpful Votes: 30 out of 30 total.
Review Date: 1999-09-29
It is hard to keep reading about what "the athlete" should eat. The athlete doesn't exist. But gymnasts and runners and swimmers and basketball players do, and they all have really different needs and interests. This book begins with a section on the principles of sports nutrition - from the science to the general practice. This part is good, and provides an up-to-date view of the latest ideas in eating for peak performance. This shouldn't be too surprising since the author is the head of nutrition at the Australian Institute of Sport. The language is easy to read and makes scientific principles comprehensible.

But it is the second half of this book that is unique and special. It takes a focussed look at various sports, providing a personal glimpse of the nutritional needs and the real life eating practices of the athletes involved. Sports really differ in their lifestyle, their competition needs, their traditions and the ways in which their athletes/players eat to be at their best. These chapters discuss the key nutrition issues that arise in a sport, providing specialised strategies to deal with these issues. It reviews applied sports nutrition studies that can answer specific questions in a sport, and provides case histories to illustrate the special nutritional challenges and solutions. Find out how Tour de France riders refuel during their event. Read how gymnasts manage weight control issues, or whether weightlifters need to eat more protein. Read some of the letters written to body building magazines and compare the answers provided in the magazines with the advice of a real sports nutrition expert. Compare the strategies that football players or runners need to use to stay hydrated during their events. This is the first time that I have gained specific insights into the real life world of sports nutrition. I hope this book continues to be updated to provide a great blend of the science and practice of sports nutrition. I would recommend this book to athletes, coaches and parents. But I also think that many sports science and medicine professionals will benefit from the "birdseye" view of sports nutrition.

The complete guide to food for sports performance is an excellent resource for athletes of all levels. Not only does it provide detailed nutritional information during training it also provides very useful tips for competition (pre-, during and post). The second part of the book addresses a wide range of different sports from distance running and rowing to gymnastics and diving. This part is particularly useful as it highlights problems and nutritional deficiencies that are experienced by athletes in this sport, thus helping the reader to pinpoint (or watch out for) certain eating "mistakes" in their favourite sport. Case studies offer very useful examples on how even small changes in the diet can make a big difference. A brilliant book for anyone interested in sports nutrition.

"Detective" belongs on the same shelf as Robin Moore's "French Connection" and Peter Maas's "Serpico." Kathy Burke's career with the NYPD was exciting, contentious, tragic--yet ultimately groundbreaking and triumphant. Burke battled crooks, killers, corrupt cops, nasty superior officers, and her own demons. That she had the guts to deal with all that--and more--is the fuel that propels this compelling book.

This is a straight forward, kick you in the balls book of what it is like to be a woman cop.
The book concludes with a revelation of the two NYC rogue cops, Eppolito and Caracappa, who sold their souls to the Mafia and thus affected so many people's lives with their corrupt actions. This officer, Kathy Burke, was adversely affected in lifelonghorrible way. There's a great deal of undercover stories detailed here, sexual harrassment, love between cops--both plutonic and sexual. Officer Burke describes so much, including receiving the medal of Honor from Mayor Koch.
But in the end, she concludes, she has her self esteem and dignity. For the reader, its those two good for nothing turncoat cops that betrayed all that was good around them.

I have been enjoying "New Food of Life" for the past several years, and when I saw "From Persia to Napa" for sale at a vineyard in Napa, I knew I had to have it. While "New Food of Life" is primarily a cookbook sprinkled with wonderful bits of history, culture, poems, fables and Persian art, "From Persia to Napa" is a love story about wine. In the first half of the book, Ms. Batmanglij covers the history of wine, the evolution of wine and culture in Iran, and includes a long discussion of the new Darioush Winery in Napa Valley, with many vivid photographs. The second half of the book are persian recipes that she has designed specifically to be paired with wine. The recipes are in general designed for high-end meals. Most are accompanied by photographs which make my mouth water! At the end of the book she includes suggested menus for persian meals at different times of the year. This is an aesthetically wonderful book as well as being fascinating reading, and she has elevated it to much more than a book of recipes matched with wine.
