The book walked us through what we were praying for after we were married. CHILDREN. We have one son who we adopted from Romania almost 3 years ago and this book has made us review of how we can love and care for more children. Would love to email Tim or Christine and speak with them about adoption etc...

Thanks!

Tim, an All Star Pitcher, retires early to dedicate his time to his wife Christine and his growing family of special needs adopted children. I was really moved by this back and forth conversation between Tim and Christine. You'll want to give this to anyone considering Christianity. The Burkes chronicle their spiritual journey with wonderful transparency until they trust Christ when their marriage was in trouble. Any couple would benefit from their hard learned lessons. I loved it!

Mythaic Journey:meaning of myth as a guide for life

Review Date: 2000-05-01
Takes myths from several cultures (Greek, Native American, Polynesian, etc) and links them to topics affecting all of us such as coming of age, loss, marriage, etc. Each myth begins with a short explanation and ends with a commentary. Beautiful illustrations.

I read along with Moore's Original Self which is also based on various classic literary authors--Ovid, Dickinson, Yeats, Zen and Buddhist writers.

Two great approaches to universal topics

Good Book of Basics

I really enjoyed this book, filled with beautiful illustrations and wonderful insights into the history and applicability of these ancient myths to our modern lives. This book is literally set up into chapters dealing with our daily dilemmas. Our harshest challenges. Sections on parenting, on relationships with your brother or sister; even the Buddha?s departure from life as a prince is documented in this magnificent work. The commentary to each of these stories, along with some of the questions asked of us, are what make this work even more superb. We have the myths, and the relevant commentaries to go along with them. While gentle and simplistic in it?s approach, the breadth of knowledge lying herein this book is incalculable. Absolutely immeasurable. It?s truly a great companion for any Joseph Campbell fan out there, or Edith Hamilton admirer.

Basic, yet challenging. What a wonderful book. Wonderful for those with no background information on mythology simply trying to begin a foundation. Likewise, excellent for any spiritual voyager stepping into the vast plateau of striving toward understanding the truth. This book can truly be an eye opening experience, so what are you waiting for?

Myths and Their Psycological Meaning
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-25
This book tells us the psycological meanings of the myths. The myths selected here include ancient Greek gods, King Arthur legend, Oriental religion, and so on. All of the stories give us useful lessons about our daily life. For example, Greek myth of "Hera and Hephaistos" teaches us how parents' selfishness hurts their childlen. But it also leaves us hope that the childlen can heal their early wounds by themselves and forgive their careless parents. Another Greek story about "Zeus and Hera" shows a good example of eternal love triangle. A man always looks for a new love affair, but he cannot endure the life without his jealous wife. Even the people who are not familiar with these myths could enjoy the whole story.

Timeless... still relevant 10 years from now !

The one thing that appeals to me about this book is that this book has timeless appeal. That I can read it now and 10 years from now and I will still be able to benefit from it.

It is beautifully presented with artwork included (not bad indeed!).. It allows you the option of reading the myth only or myth with commentary.

The great thing about the commentary is that it does show you how an "ancient" myth can still relate to us (in some way) in this modern "urban" time. The commentary also allowed me to think about the myth in a way I never thought before.. hence making it every more relevant to me.

I like how it is has sections .. hence I can pick this up 10 years from now, go to the relevant section and learn. Or even "hand on" this book to others.. hence the appeal will be generational.

Not a heavy read - so if you're looking for a "dry" book, go elsewhere. This book _is_ for everyone, in my humble opinion.

Great tool

I am a first-year HS English teacher, and I have depended on the sage advice of Jim Burke (via the English Teacher's Companion book and website) to help me survive my first year. I purchased the Teacher's Daybook early in the summer and received it during my first week of school (my first minor complaint).

The daybook has so many special features that it is not only a useful tool for planning but also an excellent guide for reflection. The reminders, well-words, conversations, and invitations offer multiple avenues for considering my practice; there is even a small space for a weekly reflection. The space for focus on four students serves as another reminder of what I should be doing to make sure all students are served. Finally, the weekly tips and websites expand my repertoire and resources. It's almost too much; if only I had time to explore all of the features! I anticipate that next year, when I'm (hopefully) beyond survival mode, I'll be able to use the "honor your roles" tool as well as some of the other features.

While I realize this is my own preference, I wish that the space for daily planning was set up vertically in columns instead of horizontally in rows. I use the planner to write bullet point or outlined agendas, and I find my list is too long to fit in rows with 3 preps. To adapt, I turn my daybook sideways and relabel the days of the week. For whatever reason, my notes fit better this way.

Regardless of this complaint, I still plan to purchase the daybook for next year. Pocketed covers would be nice, but I understand the added production expense involved. I'm hoping to get a nice 3-ring portfolio to hold my daybook together with a notebook and all the other requisite papers I must carry around, as Mr. Burke has suggested.

Stay Organized

After hearing so many positive reviews of The Daybook from new and veteran teachers, I had to see it for myself. Since school does provide me with lesson planners, calendars and binders to keep important information, I began to wonder if I wasted my money buying The Daybook. Now that the year is more than half way over, I can say that I was glad that I bought it. Having one place that holds almost all important information --sub days, contact info, important dates of all kinds, monthly and yearly calendars, space for reflection and notes, etc--helped me stay sane and organized. The Daybook had more tools than I needed but it was nice to know that I had so much to work with. On top of that, I had access to the Daybook website for more. My one complaint was having to draw lines in the weekly planner section, but I understand that each person may want to use the space differently. I also enjoyed reading Burke's "Tips for Teaching." each week. I know I would have eventually lost all sense of organization if I relied only on the materials provided by the school. I think The Teacher's Daybook helped to make my life a little more focused and less stressful.

Jim Burke here! I thought I would add a bit more info on this year's Daybook. It is not a complete revision, but this 2003-04 edition does include features many (myself included) suggested after using the Daybook last year. First, it includes dates on the monthly section and a designated space on the weekly pages to indicate the date. The calendars are formatted in way more common, familiar format (Sunday to Saturday). It is also drilled to fit right into a binder. I cleaned up all errors and added a few other little improvements. Thanks for your feedback on the first one; it made a difference. I have seen a new type of plastic pocket at places like Staples that you can snap into a spiral bound notebook; you might want to check that out--I will be trying that out this year.

Enjoy the year. Enjoy the kids. Enjoy your life.

Jim

As a new teacher this year, one of the most frustrating things was finding a way to keep my lessons together. Jim Burke's book not only gives a place to organize my lesson plans and reflect upon them, but also useful tools for every aspect of my life. There are sections that remind me to access the other parts of my life besides teacher, and sections to help focus on individual student attention. I also like that there are different sections to keep lists of administrators, substitutes, and sick days. If my book ever went missing, I would feel lost without it! Thanks for making my first year a whole lot easier!

I have long admired Jim Burke's work in the field of English/LA. This planner offers some insight into his organization and setup. I loved the weekly planning pages with the large amount of space (I divided them into four sections for the subjects I teach and still had *plenty* of room.) and the fact that there is a monthly calendar as well...perfect for writing in staff meetings, events, etc.

New teachers in particular might enjoy his goals sections, suggestions, and the free downloads available to customers.

Great organizational tool!

I am not a big fan of daybooks, and am the kind of teacher who has trouble recording and planning in this format. This was the first daybook that I have actually been able to use for a full school year, a minor miracle in itself, but I also found the overall format and feel to be more "organic" and conducive to effective planning. I especially appreciate the terse but relevant hints or suggestions he gives that may be obvious [like relating one week's content to the next] but they are still helpful. This is a daybook with personality which I like using. What more can be said?

Best Planner for Teachers

Last year I purchased the 2006-2007 day planner and found it very useful. I organized the way Burke advised--I put it into a 3-ring binder and added extra pockets for various important documents. I also added divider tabs to the different sections so that I could access them quickly. Before the school year began, I very carefully filled out the planner so that all of the important information was at my fingertips. I can't tell you how many times I was glad I did! Think of those days when you have two minutes before the bell rings, you're online to the ESD trying to reserve a film for one of your classes, and you need to find your ESD member number...grab your planner, it's right there with all of your other important numbers. Also, I take my planner home every night and I keep a copy of my students' grades, contact information, department information, etc. and I know all of it is right there and I don't have to search through files and folders or anything else.

The only con to this planner is that the lesson planning area isn't broken down into periods or classes. It would be nice to have "alternative" planning pages available for teachers who teach multiple subjects.

The website teachers can access once they purchase the planner has a variety of forms available. I plan to utilize these more this year.

I used the 2006-2007 version of this planner this past year. I am a middle school teacher and feel this planner is the best one on the market. My favorite part is that it has the monthly calendar pages in the front as well as the weekly planning pages. My only wish is that the weekly planning pages would have the dates on them as the monthly calendar pages already do. This is the only planner on the market I have found that is actually dated for the year and has as much writing room. I will be buying another one for next school year.

The 1884 edition -- the last one -- includes 60,000+ blazons of English, Scots, Welsh, and Irish arms. There are no illustrations except for the royal family and incidental examples in the glossary of heraldic terminology. A straight-forward reference work which assumes the reader's ability to convert text into a mental image, but this could not otherwise have been squeezed into 1,185 double-column pages! The perfect companion to _Burke's Peerage_ and _Burke's Landed Gentry._ Not cheap, but still a bargain.

The General Armory of England..,London, 1883 mentiones "Silvester, Yardley, Baronet.. and Sylvester or Silvester, Armor/Crest "a tree vert., crow..., together with Earl of Derby.. Please help with information: Where can I get a family tree of these Silvesters, or who may be addressed for exact information? Is there an official society which I possibly can involve? It supposedly should be my fathers line. My mother, Grace Thorpe, whom my father has married Aug. 26th. 1939 in New York City, was a descendend from Lord Pell of the Manor of Pelham. Same question, can I get a family tree? Who is to be contacted? Again, please do not be angry with me for making this anusual approach. Thank You very much indeed and in advance for any valuable information. P.S. My father, William G. von Sylvester, US-Citizen, was well known to Mr. Peter ffrench-Hodges, in the 70ies member of the British Tourist Authority in London. How can I find out wether he is still allive? Hans-Peter Wenzl-Sylvester, Freystr. 2 D.80802 Munich, Germany

The premise of this series is simple. If you think dating is tough as a human, imagine the challenges faced by vampires, werewolves, and other paranormal characters. An all-expenses-paid vacation to Chimera Island brings each of the couples together and the fun begins.

I enjoyed all three stories in this anthology, but I can't get DICHOTOMY out of my mind. Chelsea is a burned out history professor looking for some R&R. She is attracted to Ray's easy going charm, yet Delano's brooding intensity is just as hard to resist. Ms. Ross brings these characters to life with wit and skill. I had never read anything quite like it. I highly recommend DICHOTOMY. If you're looking for something different, with a sizzling erotic edge, you won't be disappointed.

This series comes in 3's (Vol 1, 2 & 3)...I bought Vol 2 because Vol 1 was very interesting, entertaining and funny. Plus I'm one of those idiots that absolutely HAVE to have the set. However, after reading Vol 2, I wish I had ignored that nagging tap on the shoulder that made me buy Vol 3. I found Vol 2 to be a tad bit over the top, even if you do have an extremely high imagination that tends to lean towards the Outer Limits. I was hanging in there with the story line (barely) until one of the scenes in the book brings a "were-bee"????...into the picture? If that wasn't bad enough, this so-called were-bee has the nerve to be sprouting a "you-know-what" that boasts to be the size of a horse's "you-know-what"...and I'm not talking about the horse's decorative knockers either. How, I ask you...HOW in heavens name does one have a conversation with a bee...in a bar...having a cocktail drink...that whips his "thing" out, slaps it on the bar...and then asks you if you're interested in a quick knock in the sack? Even if the book IS based on an imaginary island where anything is possible...a "were-bee" for Christmas sake????? I'm afraid the book lost me after that. I don't mind letting you know that I am dragging my feet in sitting down to read Vol 3. I mean what's coming next? A sea lion on crack that can perform Mozart on your G-spot?? It wouldn't surprise me...

This book was written in the shadow of the 2000 Internet bust. So, why write a review in 2005? My answer, memories are short. As the economy continues to expand people will again become courageous and begin to try new technologies. Much of it will turn out great, but a lot is bound to be the same stupid mistakes made half a decade ago. . .

You may think that because you are in a non-internet company, you are safe. Two words: you're not. Technology is already integrated in every business-even the mom-and-pop outfits depend on it. To remain competitive requires increasingly skillful use of technology. In 2000, the technology experts bombed. In 2005 it's everyone's turn.

This book is a great way to jump-start your move towards making good technology choices--by examining bad ones. The teaching method employed in this book is to tell stories, then explain what went wrong. Most chapters are organized along those lines and stand quite well by themselves. Thus, it's easy to simply read a chapter, set the book down for a few days and pick it up for another chapter. (I like books that cater to a busy schedule!) As such it's easy to read and the narrative format brings the drier aspects analyzing business technology to life. Currently I see that it's selling used-with shipping for under $5! I'll give that 5 stars!

A comedy and tragedy in every chapter!

To Dan & Alan.
I wanted to thank you for writing such a good book. Now I understand that I am not the only techie who has to experience these frustrations, and that makes me feel a little better, but I will feel even better when I have implemented the teachings in the second half of the book.

I loved the title! The title of the book caught my eye, because I had heard about a book titled "business at the speed of light(?)", and being a bit of a rebel, I laughed when I read the title and thought "that's the truth". After a few scans of various pages, I wanted to buy it. And I am not disappointed yet.
I would not feel stupid telling someone to read this book based on it's title, and if you do, then you may need to get out the environment you are currently in. Everyone needs to lighten up a lot. That theme is illustrated several times in this book.

Dan & Alan, please send me an email when your site is revised (ExecuThought.com), I would like to find other tech people to converse with about your thoughts and lessons in this book, and I think your online dicussion board would be an excellent place to do it.

Again thanks for the book, I haven't enjoyed reading a "business" book like this since reading the "E-myth revisited". Each chapter is a comedy, adventure and tragedy wrapped in a valuable lesson.

I have been collecting the dinnerware since 1990. My mother had it back in the 60's and 70's. This book is excellent and very helpful. My daughter wrote the publisher and the publisher gave my number to the author and also sent pictures of my collection to Barbara and Barbara called my daughter. What a surprise that was to her. They spoke of the pieces we have and the pieces she would like to have. Since then we have almost doubled my collection. She inspired us and we went to Crooksville, Ohio and toured the Museum in 1997 and shopped in the town north of Crooksville where we bought several pieces of the dinnerware that I did not have. I now have over 700 pieces of the Mirrored Brown House and Garden Dinnerware. I am real proud of my collection and this book is a great way to see the pieces that are out there somewhere. Good Luck in finding the pieces you need too! They are getting harder and harder to find. If you would like to talk to me about my collection you may e-mail me. I will welcome your questions. Some inside information: My photograph of choice for the cover of the book was rejected by the publisher as too much like the 'House n' Garden's' magazine covers...but if you look on inside next to 'About the Author' the lovely picture of my favorite piece, the duck casserole, is displayed in a dinnerware setting on a red-checkered tablecloth! The photo was taken in my kitchen! This dinnerware was as common as American Apple Pie until the mid 1980's. Wether James Lee Burke is writing the Dave Robicheux novels or stories about other topis he always makes the characters very real and very human. The stories in the Convict are perfect examples of what a great writer of poeple Burke really is. Each one we get to know and learn things from through the course of their story. Some classify Burke as mystery writer, others as a southern writer, I dont care what you call him he darn good at what he does. No one who call themselves a fan of Burke`s should pass on the Convict.

If you've read James Lee Burke's novels, then you're in for a more than pleasant suprise with "The Convict". Because it's a book of short stories.

Mind you - it's just as well these stories are short. Each tale packs enough punch for a full blown novel. Comparing just one of these stories with any of Burke's novels is like comparing whisky with strong beer.

Each story is heady stuff - not only in the powerful way Burke takes a word and wrings all the blood out of it onto the page before setting it into place. The stories are of strong-headed, often wrong-headed men doing what they knew to be the best thing. They are tales of the American South, of the bijoux days, of the days of sweat and gunpowder and bowel-shaking fear.

These are tales Burke must have heard as a boy, tales that have been purified in the distillery of Burke's mind until all that's left is the gritty, sweaty essence.

And, at just a shade over six bucks, these are cheap thrills, indeed. But do be careful: each story packs enough of a wallop to put Mike Tyson on the canvas.

But trust me on this, you start reading these stories and they won't FEEL like the "required" reading that too often turns out to be dull, pretentious tripe foisted off on us by brittle critics and coked-out marketing agents. Nope, these are terrific stories that happen to be beautifully written by a man I am becoming convinced (I'm less than half way through his existing oeuvre) is one of the greatest American writers of all time. The title story, 'The Convict,' easily, EASILY holds it own with Harper Lee's 'To Kill a Mockingbird.' Sometimes the characters in these stories aren't entirely likeable (though they are always charismatic) but Burke makes no bows to political correctness; but to justice and to age and to reason and to living life to its fullest, here he surely exceeds any human expectations of capturing the same within the confines of a short story.

I always had a fondness for Pat Boone and his clan, so I picked up this book with his picture on the cover. Inside was so much more. Interesting stories from a wide variety of characters from Glen Campbell (who has a reminiscence about "country food" that is hilariously sick) to Dr. Demento (who has a gentle fondness for "real people's music") plus stories of wild men like Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Legend. AND wilder women.... Fascinating and enjoyable. An unexpected treat!

This book of short bios reads like a newspaper, and I say that as a compliment. The writing is easy-to-digest and prsents facts without a lot of editorializing. What's more like all respectable reporters, Mr. Burke has the good sense to stay out of the way of his subjects' point of view.

These are character portraits for today's generation, those of us who've come to rely on USA Today's "McStory" format of concise data, "I'm busy; gimme the facts." I enjoyed the sampler of such diverse talents whose impact spans history, gender, and stylistic approaches.

It's rather doubtful, if wishful thinking, but a Volume Two would certainly be worth my time and interest. Mr. Burke, howsabout another go featuring new performers? Your readers are waiting.

Ken Burke has been a writer and reviewer of music since 1984 for many publications, including my 'OUTER SHELL'. With his first book, he presents the lives of country/rock-a-billy/Rock artists with first-hand interviews. It is a brilliant inside-look into their lives, and extremely well written. It also provides new revelations into the rise of such artists as The Jordanaires, The Oak Ridge Boys, Mickey Gilley, Jerry Lee Lewis; and others.
No matter what type of music you are into, this book provides a fascinating read into the doings of past musical history and its
'doings' of its time. >>> A fun and informative read.
