Adam's "Pocket Guide to Self-Hypnosis" is a small book on a powerful topic. His theories on our own abilities and responsibilities
in self-healing and creating our own success are clearly outlined and his format is easy to implement. He includes a suggested
script outline that can be tailored to meet your specific needs. I have noticed significant results since putting his ideas
to work toward my goals. It can work for you, too!

A fascinating look at the culture of the people

In this highly interesting work, Peter Burke sets out "to describe and interpret the popular culture of early modern Europe,"
and he does it in such a way as to be accessible to the general reader. Burke is attempting a synthesis of all of European
culture from 1500 to 1800 (i.e., until the beginnings of industrialization). His thesis is that there is such a thing as
popular culture (what he terms "little tradition"), transmitted informally and shared by both elites and commoners at the
close of the Middle Ages. However, with the coming of the Reformation and especially the Renaissance, the educated few,
who share in the "great tradition," are driven to separate themselves from the "common", "unchristian"," or "immoral" customs
of the people. This entire process ends with the return of the elite to "discover" popular culture again for a variety of
reasons: antiquarianism, curiousity, nationalism, etc. Perhaps the most valuable part of the book is Burke's intelligent
discussion of his method (folklorist, literary critical, and socio-anthropological), his nuanced two-tiered model of culture
(great and little), and his honest discussion of the problems of the sources for popular culture. Other interesting parts
of the book include chapters on the transmitters of popular culture (Ch. 4); culture ideals expressed through heroes, villains,
and fools (Ch. 6), the world of Carnival as the most important ritual setting for popular culture (Ch. 7), and the reforming
attacks on Carnival by the educated elite through the institution of Lent (Ch. 8). For information about specific locales
and times, this book can't compare to the precision of focused studies. However, despite the fact that this book was written
over 20 years ago, it still makes an excellent introduction to the study of popular culture. It also provides a context
to give particular events meaning, something that most specific studies simply can't do. Burke's style and thought are
clear and highly interesting. A must read for anyone interested in the world of early modern Europe.

In this day and age of accountability and NCLB, the human element of teaching unfortunately goes to the wayside. Teachers
might hear from their students, "school isnt fun anymore." This book really guides teachers into bringing back the joy of
school and celebrate student work. There are plenty of examples, forms, ideas, etc. to get the teacher going. I LOVE THE CHECKLIST
BASED ON STANDARDS!!! Although I have yet to implement, I shared the ideas with my colleagues, who then implemented the ideas
and say their kids love having a portfolio and "when can we make the next one?" This is definately a purchase you sould make
along with Kay Burke's other book, "From Standards to Rubrics in Six Steps: Tools for Assessing Student Learning, K-8."

I have had some trying situations come up in my marriage. I could tell that my peace was being stolen from me and I couldn't
stand in my own strength and have the ability to forgive and love like I should. I was sitting in my seat in our church, and
I felt like I needed to go to the bookstore and get this book. So I did. I read half of it before service even started! Yes,
God knew what I needed and I am so happy and thankful to know that God used this book to enable me to not yield to my flesh
but to forgive and keep my peace!

story reader. From SciFi to horror to comedy to religion, Random Words is a tastey melting pot of character driven stories
that will leave you wanting more. It's a good thing that the young Mr. Burke has 3 other books available.

".....Individually and collectively, we have had considerable experience teaching children, adolescents, and adults in elementary and secondary schools and in teacher education programs in colleges and universities.
Our teaching experiences have been enriched by our research and involvement with teachers in curriculum planning and professional development.
In association with Ken Goodman, we have been involved in miscue analysis projects, taping the reading of hundreds of readers of various ages and proficiencies and analyzing their miscues in order to learn about the reading process.
Our research also involves studying early literacy development, documenting the ways readers become consciously aware of their own miscues, their personal views of reading, and the effect of these views on their reading.
We also are actively involved with teachers/researchers studying literacy learning in their classrooms.
We are ALWAYS RELATING RESEARCH AND THEORY WITH PRACTICE."

The masterpiece of modern conservatism

I cannot believe that noone has reviewed this.Burke wrote this incredibly farsighted dissection of the French Revolution
at a point when most English opinion leaders were supportive of that great orgy of sadistic bloodletting. He wrote this in
1790 as a reply to a clergyman who was of course a big supporter of the Revolution. Burke dissects the reverend and was
able to foresee the emergence of a dictator well before the Reign of Terror and Robespierre and of course before anyone
had heard of Napoleon. It includes many memorable phrases such as " the age of chivalry is dead; the age of sophists and
calculators has begun." Other memorable phrases living until our times include " the unbought grace of life." Burke is
probably the unsurpassed political genius of the last two hundred years. By all means if you want to know the essence of
conservatism as prudent reform vs the awful beast of millenarian utopian leftism, this is where you must start.

research. Men (and the occasional woman) whose memories were threatened to be lost in the mists of time, have been rediscovered
and presented here for mankind to remember. A tour de force desintined to be on the bestseller list!!
