This text is a one stop shop for those responders who want to know what HAZMAT is really about. Anyone interested in furthering their abilities and understanding of Hazardous Chemicals needs this book. It is not too technical for those few who think you can become too technical when responding to emergencies, but opens the door for those of us, who take our work seriously.

I bought this book for my son. He was thrilled to get it. I wasn't sure how a little boy with a huge interest in planes and ships would like reading this book about this amazing woman. He loved it. He read Anne Frank not long after this book. Opened up the eyes of a little boy to other great people other than just male heroes.

The authors of this book have done an immeasurable job in explaining the architecture, historic background, maintenance, and problems regarding beloved Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia. This section of the city is perhaps revered as Boston's Back Bay or London's Bloomsbury. This section of the city is still prestige for residents. I bought this book for research regarding Philadelhia and it is a treasure. I won't say how much I spent on it but it's the most expensive book that I have and it's not even autographed by the authors. Regardless, it's a treasure I won't give up.

An Historical Chronology of Tuberculosis
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-04
An illustrated chronicle of tuberculosis briefly and interestingly told in this up-to-date second edition:

Ancient Period (5000 B.C. -- 1600 A.D.)
Pre-Modern Period (1600 -- 1800)
Modern Period I (1800 -- 1881)
Modern Period II (1882 -- Now)

The modern period is divided into two parts: the years before and after Koch's discovery of the tubercle bacillus in 1882

Because the development of our knowledge of tuberculosis closely follows the path of medical progress, periods and some pertinent discoveries in general medical history are included along with a few background items in world history.

About 500 discoveries and events pertaining directly to the history of tuberculosis are given along with their references. This makes available the first selected bibliography embracing the entire subject and is a valuable addition to the book. (The first edition did not have a bibliography).

The book should be of special interest to workers in tuberculosis and public health, particularly, doctors, nurses, social workers, and educators. Tuberculosis patients will find it of interest. As a reference book it should prove to be of value to many physicians and others in the medical sciences.

The purpose of the book is to make readily avialable the significant discoveries and events in the history of tuberculosis along with appropriate references.

A Challenging Prose for Historians and Social Theorists

With utmost precision and transparency, Burke examines indiscriminately and critically a wide spectrum of intellectual works in the fields of anthropology to classical sociology and cultural, political history; and illustrates how history and social theory have been used interchangeably to draw definitive conclusions in understanding the long lasting "confrontations" in the Western intelligentsia. In his critical survey that includes such scholarly endeavors from the ancient world to contemporary period, Burke first discusses the central problem of which is the intricate dialectic between history and social theory, and then draws his conclusion from a broad range of exemplary works to categorize models and methods as important methodologies, central concepts as ways of seeing the world, materially and socially, and finally central problems as defined by the pioneering scholars since the Enlightenment. In this very clear argumentative style, in other words, his principal aim is to discuss the forms and the proponents of the problem themes; to define the conceptual frameworks to comprehend them; and finally, to describe the methods necessary for exploring both problems and methods simultaneously.

With his final review over six monographs Burke also attempts to broaden the reader's intellectual vision in the sense that the "collision" of history and social theory is imminent in many ways and "social change" is the most vital "end product" of this intellectual journey. This is a really excellent book and definitely useful for historians, social theorists and those who need to examine anthropology, political science and social philosophy under one scholarly roof.

How To Pray

Review Date: 2001-03-20
How to Pray, by Reverend Joseph Nassal and Nancy Burke, is a "nondenominational primer [that] shows you how to connect with a power beyond yourself."

Nassal and Burke open their book with a description of what or to whom we pray to, and highlight some of the history of God as Father and God as Mother. They explain that "prayer is all about relationship with God, regardless of the images and names we use to build that relationship."

They discuss the different forms that prayer can take, and explain the differences between prayer and meditation. Prayer is not an exercise or a convenience, they say, but rather "it is a human necessity and Divine commandment." They add that "your prayer relationship will be private, intimate and uniquely yours."

Although prayer is a natural action, sometimes it's hard to find the time to pray, or to know just how to go about it. Nassal and Burke suggest forming the habit of prayer by reserving a time and place for prayer--to plan a time for prayer just as we plan time to eat, sleep, or mow the lawn. They say "cultivating a prayerful life is no different" than cultivating other good habits. They offer specific tips on how regular prayer can be made a part of even the busiest life.

Although they maintain that prayer is a private process and that each will find "your own voice and words," Nassal and Burke devote the second half of the book to printed prayers as assistance to those who need it. They grouped the prayers into classifications such as gratitude and thanksgiving, petition, and praise.

How To Pray is for all those seeking a closer relationship with the Divine in their lives.

Ah! This little book brings to life an age-old story. What I liked most about this book is the beautiful baby. So tender and sweet and at the ending the illustration is priceless.
A great little book to share with your sweet baby.
