A great book about the lost art of Point and Figure Charting, from a man with years of experience. The books leads the reader
through the construction of a Point and Figure Chart and into understanding different signals and formations. From there
a very concise defination of the NYSE Bullish %, will help the investor to go on the "defensive or offensive". Mr. Burke
then tells the reader some of the steps he goes through when considering a stock for purchase.

This is a powerful healing process presented in a support group framework. The use of creative healing rituals and "Living
Scripture Exercises" create a powerful spiritual vehicle reconciling the post-abortive person with God and their aborted
child. It is also the basis for weekend retreats offered across the USA that can be found at...

I believe this book is best used when it is presented in the group weekend at Rachel's Vineyard Retreats. There is such power
when a group of men and women in pain meet to find the truth of God, the forgiveness and healing that only He can offer.
By entering through faith into the scripture enactments one makes a conscience walk of faith to go through the motions,
suddenly the Word of God becomes powerful and pertinent to some for the first time. To see others and hear their hearts flow
with saddness, regret, remorse and denial links the missing pieces for many. The Holy Spirt is present and working in these
souls as they discover there is a road to healing and they have finally found it. There is a continuation to healing as
well. Not every scripture is necessary or helpful for each group. There are many to choose from. I believe with a companion
post-abortion Bible Study (on-going),such as, Forgiven and Set Free by Linda Cochrane this book is an integral part of healing.

This book is a completely worthwhile buy! It gives ofcourse statistical information, mainly in a map form about the threats
and about the risk which the world's reefs face. It doesn't catalog the amount or rate of degradation, since this is not fully
known. However the book gives information on the types of reefs, real case studies of reefs and of problems faced by reefs.
The book is an easy read and the information presented in both map and picture form is very inviting.
I reccommend this book for students studying reefs/ conservation, or anyone just interested in reefs. A good addition to this book as well is Coral Reefs, ecology, threats and conservation by Charles Sheppard.

Expert teacher Jim Burke offers readers an important model for understanding student success. Through personal vignettes,
letters from former students, and references to some of the best texts on teaching, Burke explores the skills and habits students
need to develop to thrive in today's school systems.
--Denise Clark Pope, Author of "Doing School": How We Are Creating a Generation of Stressed Out, Materialistic, and Miseducated Students.
How many people are there in public schools these days who, like Jim Burke, teach as well as Jaime Escalante and write as well as Andy Rooney? There are not enough of them, and parents like me often fight to get our kids into those teachers' classes. Burke's new book, School Smarts, gives us all a chance to step inside his classroom and soak up the insights of a master educator who will not only help our children, but teach even us a thing or two.
--Jay Mathews, Education Columnist, The Washington Post
"School Smarts provides a concrete, engaging, and inspiring guide for teachers and other educators committed to the hard work of facilitating the kinds of shifts in academic identity and competence that are necessary to create life-changing learning for their own students.
--Ruth Schoenbach, Coauthor of Reading for Understanding: A Guide to Improving Reading in Middle and High School Classrooms
Jim Burke provides a framework for understanding what teachers can do to help transform the academic experience of learners who struggle with the rules and logic of the school game. Eminently useful, deeply moving, and chock full of innovative ideas, this book and Jim Burke are gifts to the profession.
--Sam Intrator, Assistant Professor of Education and Child Study at Smith College, Author of Tuned In and Fired Up
Jim Burke is already known as a restless visionary in the field of English teaching, but in School Smarts he . . . cuts to the core of basic principles of teaching and learning. . . . At a time when standardization is being confused with excellence, Burke's new book is a bracing reminder of what it really means to think big.
--Tom Newkirk, Professor of English at the University of New Hampshire, Author of Misreading Masculinity
This is a book about success. A book about what effective learners do to succeed in school and how you can help all of your students achieve similar results. It's based upon a five-year study in which Jim Burke investigated the essential skills and abilities effective learners use to succeed in academic classes. His results are so groundbreaking, so powerful that they will forever change the way you view learning.
Academic success involves much more than the obvious knowledge of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Effective students recognize what matters in school, what's worth paying attention to, how much effort is appropriate. They share four essential qualities, what Jim describes as the Four Cs of Academic Success:
commitment-the extent to which students care about the work and maintain consistency in their attempt to succeed
content-the information or processes students must know to complete a task or succeed on an academic assignment in class or in school in general
competencies-those skills students need to complete the assignment or succeed at some task
capacities-the quantifiable aspects of performance; students can have great skills but lack the capacity to full employ them.
School Smarts describes each one of these qualities in detail, offering an array of examples and practical suggestions to help you develop these habits of mind in your own students. These strategies will work across all subject areas with all kinds of students-whether they're attempting to go from Fs to Cs or Cs to A/Bs. But Jim doesn't stop there. In the final chapter, he takes the Four Cs one step further, demonstrating how they can assist you in addressing the academic literacy needs of your students.

Jim Burke's School Smarts explores what students need to do to be successful in school. It goes beyond platitudes and bootstrap
advice offering practical suggestions (and a convincing rationale!) of what teachers can and should do to help non-traditional
students thrive in an academic environment. Twenty years from now, I believe this is the book Jim will be most remembered
for.

as a learning tool to evangelize those non-Catholic Christians because it has Scripture verses on top of Scripture verses!

Anyone -- Catholic or non-Catholic -- who wants to learn what the Catholic Church teaches should get it from the horse's mouth
and purchase the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Because the Catechism offers a detailed exposition of the Catholic faith,
it cannot be brief; indeed, it is 904 pages long. Those who are looking for a far briefer introduction to the Catholic faith,
with a view to its biblical basis, can turn to Father Burke's Scriptural Catechism with great profit. It is concise without
being skimpy: it offers meat and potatoes Catholicism to the meat and potatoes reader, at a price that can't be beaten.

Many books describe British contributions to breaking codes and ciphers during World War II, but until now, the American involvement
got scant attention because most of it remained secret. The authors' book exposes the US involvement in codebreaking a bit
more and gives us an excellent description of the people and technology involved. I recommend this book highly to anyone interested
in the development of codebreaking during WW II, the development of American electronic technology, and the interactions between
US and British codebreakers. This book is a "keeper" in my library.

During one of the darkest periods of the war, the German U-boat fleets were decimating the supply efforts of American
naval convoys. These killer wolf packs of submarines were coordinated via radio communications encrypted using the newest
four rotor version of the Enigma system. While the British had had some success cracking the old three rotor system, the
addition of the fourth rotor by the Kriegsmarine made the job almost impossible with existing techniques.
This book tells the details, some for the first time, of the development by the National Cash Register corporation of computing machines to attack this code. This book is riveting in its narative and also covers the background leading up to Joe Desch's work at NCR. It is an excellent read and the combination of a historian and a journalist as authors gives you the best of both worlds. DeBrosse weaves an engaging personal story while Burke firmly establishes the historical accuracy of the material.
All in all, an exceptional book about an, until recently, secret project.

Early on the path of spirituality, I stumbled upon this book at the library. A few weeks later, I was feeling miserable.
Nothing my fellows recommended to lift my mood helped. The hopelessness was overwhelming. During a weekend locked in my
self-imposed cell, I opened this book. Somehow, it pulled me through.
To me, it is spiritual, but not religious. It talks about what we are seeking, how to do it, and problems we face along the way. There are about 2 quotes per page. I returned the book but one stuck with me I'll paraphrase. "Until you have great control of tthe mind do not focus on it. Dwell on God."

An ESL student introduced me to this fine series of street language a few summers ago. Practical, witty, and fun, the Slangman
series dares to go where most English teachers fear to trend. David Burke shows some of the overlooked reasons that many international
students struggle to understand radio shows, television broadcasts, and daily conversation. Readers will learn idioms, contractions,
and many slang terms - and smile a few times. Ideal for international students, EFL students curious about daily life in the
United States, and restless young travelers planning a trip.
