Many schools are trying to implement freshman programs that promote the success of students and helps them throughout they're
schooling. This book provides a clear image of one type of program and the HOW to establish your own program. Burke does
not argue a one-size-fits-all approach, but instead presents a view of "here's what I did and why" with recommendations for
things to consider as you structure your program.

Burke, Jim (2005). Accessing School: Teaching Struggling Readers to Achieve Academic and Personal Success. Portsmouth, NH:
Heinemann.
In my commute to and from school, I've seen a bumper sticker that says: "If you can read this, thank a teacher." In many cases, the adage on the bumper sticker is true, but some children advance to high school with the ability to read little besides that bumper sticker. In his book Accessing School: Teaching Struggling Readers to Achieve Academic and Personal Success, author Jim Burke outlines a plan for reaching high schoolers who have not mastered the basics of literacy.
For high school or even middle grades classrooms, this book provides a solid framework of ideas for reaching and teaching students who lack strong reading skills. In six chapters, Burke spotlights a remedial reading class, called ACCESS, which he pioneered in the Burlingame public schools in California. Burke first provides an overview of the ACCESS class, explaining how and why the class targets low-performing high school students and attempts to fast-forward their learning. In his description, Burke provides ample research to back up his ideas for the ACCESS class. Burke then carefully lays out the set up of the class and provides numerous ideas for engendering academic success in the subsequent chapters. Even though I teach elementary students, I could relate to Burke's ideas about how reading buddies stimulate struggling readers. As the book concludes, Burke looks at how to measure student success and delves into the roles that teachers play in the ACCESS class.
Throughout the narrative, Burke writes with an easy, friendly tone and provides real examples from his teaching career and his own life as a father. Although the book mainly seems geared toward administrators looking to implement a new kind of remedial reading class, many of Burke's ideas are useful for classroom teachers who work with struggling readers on any level.
Reviewed by Katie Wester Neal, who recently completed a Master's degree at the University of Pennsylvania, and currently, teaches fifth grade in Sterling, Virginia. Her academic interests include gender differences in education and helping struggling readers improve.

Famous in WWI, He Rose Higher After the War

During World War II a lot of good men rose to the top from relatively low levels when the war started. Arleigh Burke started
the war as a commander on shore duty at the Washington Navy Yard, also known as the Naval Gun Factory. His superior officer
refused to let him go.
Eventually he got orders to go to the South Pacific, it had been twenty years since he had graduated from the Naval Academy. From there his career skyrocketed. Twenty years younger than Nimitz/Halsey he was the most famous Naval officer in active service after the war. He eventually became Chief of Naval Operations under Eisenhower. He was the CNO for an unprecedented six years.
The author of this book served in the Navy during World War II, and afterwards was a civilian faculty member of the Naval Academy. His biographies of Nimitz and Halsey won numerous awards and was selected by Burke and some of his friends as biographer. Admiral Burke, by then unable to read because of failing eyesight, listened to the book as it was read by his wife and assisted in the correction of errors.
This book is well written and brings interesting insight not only to the story of World War II, but of the political happenings afterward when Truman wanted to unify the services in an attempt to do away with the inter-service rivalry.

Nicely organized and very useful. Broken down both by organ system and diagnosis with extra information in the back on specific
antibiotics....but, beware old editions of this handbook. Antibiotic therapy changes rapidly, along with microbial resistence
patterns. Make sure you are getting the newest version of this handbook available.

I have had only limited contact with B.H. Burkes's photography, but I must say that I am terribly impressed with this work.
The images not only have interesting content, but they literally glow. I also found the inclusion of hand written descriptions
quite helpful and gives this book a mixed media-like look. When you factor in the huge changes that this region is undergoing
and the fact that I suspect that much of what is pictured in this book is either gone or horribly transformed (the Lux Parfumerie
series is a good example of this transformation for the worse in my humble opinion), then this book's content becomes downright
invaluable.

Wow! A photographer friend called me up from New York City on a Saturday night to tell me about this book. He said it was
so good it made him "want to be a photographer again." After he rang off I went on-line and ordered a copy from Amazon. A
week later I got it and my spirit was renewed, too.
There's no mistaking this for anything but a Bill Burke book. The hand written captions on the photos, the unique design that serves to enhance the photos, not some designer's ego and the immediacy of the image that puts the reader right there when the photo was made, all of Burke's trademark elements are here. The stunning four color black and white reproductions were made from scans of the black and white enlargements Burke made from his black and white Polaroid negatives. The photos are reproduced in warm tones with creamy whites so that many of them resemble 19th Century albumen prints by Baldus or the Bonfils.
While no one but Burke could have made these photos, at times he seems to be channelling the spirits of Atget, Evans and Sander. The second photo in the book of the "man with pigs" took my breath away. If August Sander had left the Westerwald for Cambodia he might have made this photo of a farmer taking pigs to market on his bicycle in a basket that looks like something out of "How to Wrap Five Eggs". The pig farmer looks out at the photographer from under the brim of his hat with a stoicism that bespeaks his acceptence of a hard life in the hot sun of southeast Asia and his quiet pride in being chosen to have his portrait made (Burke often gives his subjects the orginal 3 x 4 inch Polaroid photo, keeping the negative to make larger prints when he returns home).
There are many other photographs in "Autrefois..." besides the portraits. The architectural photos often show clasic old buildings with a barnacle like covering of late 20th Century design elements and advertising, other bear the legend, "demolished" or are shown before and after style with a superficial changes like a coat of modern window walls. The "Hanoi Hilton" is shown in 1995 unchanged since its days as a POW camp and in 1998 with the modern Singapore Hotel rising inside the former prison walls.
I would recommend this book to lovers of fine photography, Viet Nam vets, architecture buffs and any library in a community with a southeast Asian population.
The book itself is a pleasure to hold, large, beautifully printed on heavy stock, sturdilly bound, even the panoramas aren't lost in the gutters between the pages. And it's a bargain at twice the price! Buy it today before it sells out.

the suburbs and society that give New York City its pulse. What happens next? I want more...

anyone who likes watching equestrian events, from the 'high life' of polo to the down and dirty racing action of a steeplechase
in the country, should own a copy of capitol horse country. it's a guide of events around the capitol area, washington,
maryland and virginia. you'll find out what to wear, what to bring, and most importantly, what to expect when you spend
an enjoyable afternoon watching a top notch equestrian event. it's a must have book if you live in the capitol area....or
if you love horses. the history is also fascinating. if you like this title, the author also wrote 'equal to the challenge'
about the pioneering women in horse sports. give it to a young girl or woman and inspire them to reach new heights. great
author and fascinating subjects.

A wonderful holiday gift for the whole family! Lauren Thompson's beautifully written retelling of O. Henry's "Gift of the
Magi" exemplifies the true meaning of Christmas. Jim Burke's full page oil paintings are spectacular! From the school girls
gazing into the antique shop window on their way home, to the touching moment when Grace must decide whether or not to trade
in her cherished doll in order to have "A Christmas Gift for Mama" -- this book is a precious gift for anyone who receives
it.

To say that Jim Burke is a gifted picture book illustrator is an understatement. Right on the heels of his huge success with
MY BROTHERS'FLYING MACHINE comes his newest awe-inspiring A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR MAMA. In this book, Burke's gentle pictures
offer the reader an inside view of a tender mother-daughter relationship that burgeons in spite of fierce adversity.Thompson's
heartwarming text and Burke's rich paintings filled with warmth come together to create what is destined to be the most sought
after holiday book of the season. Burke's painstaking research into the lifestyle, clothing and toys (especially the china
dolls) of the 1930's, immediately transport the reader into the lavish world of the affluent society of this era.
It is not surprising that this book has won the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio "Best Book" Award for this holiday season.
It is a book that truly depicts the magic that happens when families take the time to know and cherish what matters most in life- love and time for each other.
Don't miss this one! It's Jim Burke at his finest!

This is a must-have book for any school counselor or comprehensive developmental guidance program. Our school used the Complete
Student Assistance Program Handbook to base our whole SAP upon. This is the only resource you will need to set up your school's
middle to high school Student Assistance Program. Everything you need to begin and run your program is here from who to
include on the team, how to set it up, market it to your community and successfully run your program is included in this
book. We were at a loss as to where to start but with this book, we were able to not only come up with a skeleton program
but completely formulate, present and run our new SAP as well as train our staff and faculty.
The book includes sample letters to parents, drug surveys for students, group interest surveys and ideas on how to expand your program into such groups as Peer Educators and S.A.D.D.
No school district should be without it.
