Interesting mix of stories and styles

Well, since this is the first review of a 1996 book, I guess many people haven't read it. :)

I initially bought this anthology because of Rebecca Paisley, but found I liked her story the least. Cleopatra's eccentric nature became tiresome after a while. Not my style. However, I enjoyed both Paula Detmer Riggs and Carole Buck very much. Enough to try other work by them. CB's story was very good because the woman wasn't perfect (size 6, etc.) and came to realize her own beauty. I really enjoyed this story the best. PDR's story showed a man's side of pain and how he needed to heal before he could move on with his life. These stories were a nice departure from typical storylines. Overall, I would keep this book because it is different from what I normally read.

The story is very slow paced and could not captivate me. There is no real "romantic tension", in fact it is almost as if the heroine does not notice the hero while they are still in Russia. The hero follows her into her home country where he starts laying siege to her (that is when the otherwise boring story gets a funny side).

Many errors prevent text from being good as it could be
Helpful Votes: 25 out of 25 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-04
I rate this text 3 because if the errors in this book were corrected, it would be a very good book. I'm a Registered Nurse, taking an online Medical Coding course that uses this book and it's associated online course. Although this textbook has many good aspects (good illustrations, good practice problems, and others), there are also some troublesome problems. The main problem is that there are numerous errors in both the text and the online course, including wrong medical definitions, descriptions, and explanations; wrong answers in the answer key to practice problems; inconsistencies; many others. This may not be as big a problem if the student has a teacher to clarify. But if you are taking an online course, you are reading the entire text and course and you are relying heavily on the text for your understanding of the material. Since I can't be sure if my answer is wrong or the book is wrong, I have spent precious time tracking down correct answers and information, which eats up the time I have for learning this material. I noticed there are two RN's on the Editorial Review Board for this text, and frankly I am shocked that RN's endorsed these printed errors. I am using the 2005 edition, which appears to be a 6th edition, so I'm wondering why the publisher hasn't done a more responsible job of editing by now. If you aren't a nurse or doctor, the errors in this text will misinform you, confuse you, and/or steer you in the wrong direction in medical coding.

Good Material -- Bad concept on CD

I count on Carol J Buck to provide outstanding study materials because I had never been disappointed. After using this book and CD I have to say I am disappointed. The book is o.k. but not as well organized or user friendly as previous and I absolutely hate the CD. It is ridiculous not to be able to check your work (pretest) and try again. Once you submit the pretest your locked out from taking this again. That is not how I study. I prefer to be able to retest over individual sections and be scored as I progress. The 2005 study guide was far superior.

Making changes

This is the story of Terri who has moved back home after the end of a ten year relationship. She has come to realize that she has put off many things she would like to do in her life while she was waiting for things to improve between her and her ex-partner. She can't wait any longer for some of the things she wants and the first of those is a baby. She finds a doctor who is willing to work with her and during the process, a new lover...her doctor, Aubrey. The book deals with the developing pregnancy and the relationship, which is complicated by their fears about trusting someone else, the appearance of both ex-lovers who want to try again and an automobile accident that could end everything they are hoping to achieve. The writing is simplistic and things seem to develop too rapidly to be realistic, not to mention a possible conflict of ethics about a doctor sleeping with her patient, but it's a better than average story.

So many twists and turns that I am exhausted!!

I have read many reviews of other Gayle Buck novels and have wondered why this particular book had never been reviewed. I think I know why now. Where in the world do you begin? There was enough material here for two books and maybe the germ of an idea for a third. I was disappointed. It was a 2 or 3 star book for me but I have decided to be generous since so many people seem to be fans of Ms Buck. This book is dated 1988 so it is obviously a reissue. I don't have a problem with books written years ago, they are often much superior to modern day efforts. I could not get myself to enjoy this read though. Here is the back cover:

----Justin Avery, Viscount of Kenelm, pretended nothing to young Lady Catherine Talbot when he proposed. He asked for a marriage of convenience, leaving him free to pursue his libertine life that made him the most notorious lord in London, as well as the most handsome and charming. But beautiful and spirited Catherine had her own ideas when she accepted this pernicious proposal. She would find a way to become the first woman to stir the viscount's heart as well as his senses. To do this, Catherine set out to teach Justin the meaning of jealousy by showing him that two could play the game of scandalous amour--only to discover how dangerous for a beginner this daring game could be.----

Well, let me just tell you that these two met while our hero was being held captive aboard a yacht which was smuggling goods from France and the crew was fleeing for their lives from a French patrol boat. He got there because he was found lying on the street unconscious after being hit on the head by a footpad. Viscount Kenelm had left his club while extremely drunk and so was unable to defend himself from the robber. Of course, these smugglers couldn't just leave him in the street so the gang (which also included Cat, a.k.a. Lady Catherine) hoisted him up and took him aboard their boat. Naturally they were not your common garden variety smugglers, not at all, they were a titled family that had that pesky mortgage to pay. What better way to make money than steal for it? Now you do understand, I hope, that this has all taken place within the first 28 pages of the book.

From there it actually got even busier!!! I was exhausted. I was not enjoying it but I felt like a gawker at a traffic accident. I knew I shouldn't look but I just couldn't help myself. How many misfortunes could these people withstand? Quite a few. Catherine and Justin were engaged, then unengaged but not allowing anyone to know so pretended to still be engaged. Then they were once again unengaged but this time with everyone knowing. She loved him, then she hated him but she actually still loved him but she said she hated him. He kind of liked her, then he loved her, then he was willing to give her up but he still loved her. Lord love a duck!! Too much going on. It also had too many characters and each and every one of them had major action to perform in this drama. Well, actually, we probable could have done without Justin's younger brother William since the author decided not to have William go tattle to Papa that Justin's betrothed had scandalized the ton by playing cards with Lord Haversaw (Justin's sworn enemy) and losing a "love token" to him. Papa had already finally lost his patience with Justin after his last mistress had come crying to him to try to stop Justin and her husband from dueling. (There was a really touching??? scene where Justin and the husband of his mistress decide to just forgive and forget. After all , she has decided that she really has fallen in love with her husband.) Are you seeing where I'm coming from? Do you get it now? Way, way, way too much.

I do not know if this is the usual style of a Gayle Buck novel. I have never read any of her other works and I don't think I will try another one soon. I need to rest.

This book is great on information and the way they explain everything. The problem is there is no answer keys on the chapter review questions. This is hard if you are doing this as a self study. You have no way of checking your answers. I had to enroll through evolve's on line self study program to get the answers. The cost was $39.95. This on line self study is well worth the money. They ask questions that is not in the book. There is a workbook that goes with this book. The workbook is good as far as giving you practice exercises. The problem is you only get answers on the odd number questions. You have no idea if the even number questions are right.

elementary overview

This book's intended audience is those without a prior legal background. It is a pretty good overview of how law and politics work together to create the current state of environmental regulation in the United States. The annotated bibliography for each chapter lists some of the better books in each subject area. My biggest criticism is that the author presents every case as a fact pattern/puzzle to be discussed and doesn't provide the outcome or even any relevant legal doctrines. For those with a legal background they could probably look up the case online to find how it turned out, but the intended audience of the book is clearly those without such a background who are probably less likely to want to find the case or to know how to. For a better and more thorough introduction to US environmental law/policy I recommend James Salzman's Environmental Law and Policy, which is accessible and interesting to both lawyers and non-lawyers.
