I literally read this book in less than 5 minutes, it would have been cute as a "miniature" book. Not worth the money (& I even bought it used!)

Dick and Jane are once again the focal point of "elementary" education. If I had read this book in high school, my entire life would have been different! The simplicity of its message is pure genius, and I laughed all the way to my shrink's office, where I promptly fired him. Women, read this book. Men, pay attention to the women reading this book.

Like all valuable lessons in life this book is short and sweet: either you get it or you don't. Like life you can keep reading and referencing until you do get it, or you can keep living it over and over, until you get it. Remember how powerful words were when you first learned to read? Remember how simple the world was, how true you're feelings were, how happy the sun made you before your life became complicated and full and time was a commodity? Read this book with the same intensity, the same innocence, the same adventuresome spirit - either way, you'll get it, and if you're smart, you'll use Dick & Jane to separate the wheat from the shaft of your life.

What 'Loose Balls' did for the ABA, this book does for the WHA. The WHA was a rival league to the NHL for most of the 1970's. It is where the Great One, Wayne Gretzky, started. It is where Bobby Hull went to play causing the Chicago Blackhawks to fall into a lull from which they have not since escaped. It is where Gordie Howe came out of retirement and played with his sons.
This book covers those stories, as well as many other equally interesting, but less known stories. The book contains the usual records and statistics, but also contains so much more.
Many players from the league get to tell their stories within the pages.
I have vague memories of the old Chicago Cougars, but at the time I never understood the difference between them and the Blackhawks. Then the Cougars and the WHA were gone and almost forgotten. This book brings the WHA back to life with honesty, humor and passion!

Greig fills his book with WHA statistics and trivia, but the best part is the narratives spoken by the players. Almost to a man they state they were indentured to the clubs of the National Hockey League. Teams mailed contracts with the dollar amounts filled in. No negotiation. Sign it or be sent to the minors. Goaltender Ken Brown wrote baseball's Curt Flood a letter thanking him for challenging the reserve clause and the status quo. A good book for anyone interested in Hockey and how its system has evolved.

This is a novel designed to tie-in to the tv show at the time, produced quickly it seems, it is nothing you really need to read unless a died in the wool Buck Rogers fan. Anything Buck Rogers from around 1980 is really not very good.

I've managed lots of systems, but I never had to be a DBA before. I found the layout to be a perfect balance of enough information to manage a system and information about the features it has. This was the only resource I needed to set up and take care of our SQL Server 2000 system, great work!

In the genre of blind sculptor-sleuths, Mo Bowdre stands alone. It's interesting that another author who uses a blind sleuth also had a Georgia O'Keeffe theme in a mystery. Both have their strong points. This is a pleasant read just for spending time with Mo and the inhabitants of his community. It's not the best of the Mo books, but it's a keeper for the time being. Mo uses his ability to think things out to solve local mysteries when he isn't creating powerful animal sculptures.

Slow development.

The book's presentation of the characters and their lives in the small towns of New Mexico are entertaining. But the developments in solving the murders are few and far between. The solving of the mystery is not dealt with well.

The good about The Good Earth
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-17
From the moment you open this book and begin chapter one you are hooked. The way Pearl Buck describes the characters and setting you can perfectly picture them in your mind. When meeting the farmer Wang Lung, you see his love for the land from the beginning of the book. When Wang Lung goes to meet his chosen bride O-lan, Pearl Buck shows the thought process of men and what they feel is beautiful in a woman. From describing the binding of the feet and how Wang Lung is greatly disopointed with O-lan and her seemingly large feet. Pearl Buck shows how faithful O-lan is, being alone during birth and getting back in the feilds the same day to help Wang, even on her death bed O-lan is faithful to Wang. Pearl aslo disscusses the value of men and women children and how Wang took pride in his boys and shame in his girls. When there is a great famine in the village, you can feel how poor these people were and how they struggled to survive, even leaving thier land to go find food. The protagonist and antagonist are clearly dipicted, with Wang Lung struggling with himself and society. The most disturbing part of the book is when Wang Lung meets Lotus Blossm and she becomes his mistress. The luxeries he gives her over O-lan because she has small feet and hands is discusting. The way Pearl Buck shows how men felt about women and how they were just property and nothing else, and the way he breaks O-lan down and treats her like trash because of her feet. The way Pearl shows how he comes and fluants the affair in O-lan's face is absolutly heart wrenching. The way Wang Lung climbs the social ladder and eventually moves away from his land, shows how money changes everything but can never change the persons soul. Throughout the book Wang always returns to his land, even on his death bed he returns to the Good Earth, the land where he built his foundation, the land where he built himself. The ending isn't as satisfying as the rest of the book but, it gives good meaning to the title of the book. This is a extrodianary book, that dipicts social status in China, a woman's value in life, beauty and ugliness, money, religion, love and friendship. I don't know what more you could ask from a book.

This great book has many examples for abnormal ECGs with detailed comments. If you are new to ECG reading , I suggest to read from another source about how to read ECG as this book concentrate on examples of abnormal ECG rather than How to read. I recommend this book with no hesitations

I bought this book to learn pediatric ekg. This book is not, in any way, a guide to learning ekg. It basically just has ALOT of ekgs and the interpretation of each. I didn't like this book. Later, after I know more of the ekgs, I may look over it to extend my knowledge. I don't feel I will gain a whole of insight with this book.

A simply told tale of a marriage
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-30
It's a bit romantic; a rich Philadelphia youth takes a trip to the countryside to paint, and he stops at a farmhouse in the Pennsylvania countryside to beg a lunch when he sees a pretty farm girl ring the supper bell. The farmer's daughter is indeed pretty and he paints her in the rustic 1800's farmhouse kitchen. From there, William is smitten, and despite the disappointment of his railroad tycoon father, he marries Ruth.

Ruth and William couldn't be more different; he is sophisticated and educated. She is a peasant and is uncomfortable away from the land. But their marriage is bound by a rich physical love that sustains them through their Golden anniversary. And through tragedy.

This is a simply-told tale, in the way Buck had of telling the story of people as people, almost divorced from their times. It is not as profound as "The Good Earth" but it has that elemental style that makes for great films and great stories. While this is not Buck at her best, it is a fine tale.

Searching for inspiration & a suitable subject for his paintings, the son of a wealthy family comes across a simple country home with a lovely daughter. Struck by her beauty & simplicity, he paints his best picture ever of her working in her parents' kitchen. Returning to the wealthy world of his parents, he cannot forget the girl & returns to marry her. The book follows the subsequent ups & downs of a marriage between a poor hard-working girl and a man accustomed to wealth and leisure, how their love impacts those around them & especially each other. Set in the early 1900's and extending past World War II, it also is a novel evocative of our country's roots.

Loses Its Charm Fairly Quickly

The problem with Blue Ruin is the narrator/protagonist, Sport Sullivan, the small-time Boston gambler who, in the novel's world, comes up with the idea of fixing the 1919 World Series. His garrulous recounting, filled (too filled) with period jargon, sets up everyone else in the fix, except Arnold Rothstein, as a loser and/or dunce. So why then, if he alone is so smart, does Sport throw away his winnings from the fix on every transparent scam that crosses his path? For a while I thought he was deliberately doing so to repent for the fix. But no, after the fix, he's just a dumb, though still smug and superior, dupe, which makes believing that he carried out all the elaborate twists of the fix just about impossible. Implausible in that way, overwritten, and too long, Blue Ruin is barely in three star territory for two reasons -- some of Boyd's writing does nicely capture the era and I at least am always a sucker for Black Sox stories.

A dark look into the mind of a gambler

Review Date: 1997-09-27
Don't read this book expecting to get close to entertaining re-creations of the 1919 Chicago White Sox players. The main focus is on the set-up man for the fix (who is also set up by a behind-the-scenes big money operator). "Sport" is a gambler and a dreamer -- but finds life sadly sapped of vitality without the thrill of risking what he is told to be important -- financial security, self-respect, even love. So why not the World Series? We follow Sport's narration through the thrills of seemingly arranging the biggest of gambling risks, but the road always seems to bend towards emotional letdown and emptiness. I thought this book would be more about players and owners, but must admit it was an interesting journey into the mind of an addicted gambler. A bit clumsily written in some sections, but very original in its focus and conclusions.

I have read many books and articles on first aid in the wilderness but none compare to Mr. Titlon's commons sense practicle approach. He does a very good job explaining what is approriate in the wilderness versus an urban setting. He also is very explicit in his directions on how to provide care.

Mr. Titlon also does a good job in organizing the book. One chapter feeds into the next.

In general I prefer the WFR course to be a conducted after someone is certified as a medical first responder so that they understand the legal differences. If you need to take both at the same time, this is an excellent course book.
