A Somewhat Biased Review

This book is written by my Aunt who presently has a school in Regina Saskatchewan named after her. I found ia a very interesting read of a side of my extended family that I have never known.

The novel's style and the struggles it portrays strikes a very familiar note to me, being that I was raised in the prairies by 1st generation Canadian parents of `very' English ancestry. My aunt was a feminist before her time and our family always thought that Auntie Ruth was very determined and individualistic, a person who did not hold typical views of what a women's role in society should be.

A FINE BIT OF OUTDOOR WRITING
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-01
This 200 page book, that has been out since 1999, is an anthology of the author's past work with some new stories (at the time) thrown in for good measure. The work includes twenty five short stories, semi-legions, hunting and fishing tales. The author's subject matter includes dogs, hunting, fishing, floating, and camping stories from the Ozark Mountains and general observations from the author thrown in here and there.
These are well written and well crafted works that capture perfectly the essence of the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks. Many of the stories are taken from episodes which occurred during the author's youth. Most of these outdoor tales were written during the 1960s and 1970s.

The author's style is very reminiscent of that of the famous outdoor writer Robert Rouark and I suspect that Dablemont has been strongly influenced by him. Rouark's Old Man and The Boy is one of the best works in this genre ever put to print, so I suppose that if you are going to be influenced by someone, which all authors are, that Rouark would be a good choice. As you read, you will also note that the author brings back the style and flair of many of the old outdoor writers that were prominent during the 1940s and 1950s in publications such as Field and Stream and Sports Afield. These are publications I grew up reading, so I feel quite comfortable with this current work. This author also has an acute sense of humor and can be quite amusing.

Dablemont is particularly strong when he writes of dogs, nature and the old timers he has been associated with. I no longer hunt, for many reasons, but still appreciate reading of the times, men and dogs that were participating in this activity when it still had honor and adventure attached to it. Dablemont has obviously been there and done it and portrays it quite well. There are some very nice black and white illustrations by Tome Goldsmith, a very talented artist.

For some great outdoor reading, it would be hard to beat this stuff and I do highly recommend it.

Tilton & Bennett have produced a very good text for Mountaineers Books. Every out-door lover, wilderness hiker and mountain back packer should read "Don't Get Sick".

Through nine absorbing chapters they inform about all the various diseases (from staph to lyme disease to bubonic plague) one may contract from living out doors. The book is small and will fit into a pocket (take it with you for reference on your next trek). T & B's comfortable, and non technical, writing style allowed me to read all 108 pages in just one week of the National Scout Jamboree.

T & B identify many diseases, suggests cures, define periods for illness, and discuss how to shield one from sickness. They offers explanation about the four microbes that make us sick: viruses, bacteria, fungi and yeast, and protozoa. They also highlight their prevention and cures. More than a dozen graphs and tables illustrate healthy ways to avoid wilderness illness and how to set up a germ free living space. T & B also provide a helpful reference section, for each chapter, at the end of the book (demonstrating their state of the art research).

With 20+ years of wilderness hiking and pack backing experience I was delighted to learn more from T & B. For example, tetanus lives in the soil (just another reason not to go bare footed in unfamiliar environments), on page 23. And sixty-six percent of all raw poultry contains salmonella (cook it thoroughly), page 62.

This book is recommended to all who spend time hiking, eating, and sleeping in the wilderness. If you enjoy the outdoors, T & B will help you love it more with good health.

If you enjoy learning about China, you should definitely read Pearl S. Buck. She knew China quite well and her books give you a glimpse of life in China during the time periods in which the book is set. Her books are classic and timeless. Well worth the time to read her works.

Forty - four upper Bucks Co. Quaker families' genealogies

If you are of Bucks County Quaker ancestry and your family's surname is listed among the 44 families in the book, you will find this book quite useful. My father's maternal line was listed here back to the 17th century in England starting with his name in 1925 at the age of 3, a very good start in tracing my genealogy. My introduction to it came from Ancestry.com which listed several of my recent ancestors as being in the book. Definitely of interest only to people from the 44 families whose genealogies are traced from 1925 back and then only to people who are interested in genealogy, as much of it is dry genealogical data ... birth, death and marriage dates, etc.

If you're a rider or just a reader you will enjoy this book. It's a great paranormal story of a biker's adventures in the afterlife . I'm not a biker but am really glad I went along for the ride. It's one of those books you will miss reading once you've finished it. You know, when you catch yourself wondering what a character in a book ( in this case , Early Times)is doing and have to remind yourself that it's just a character in a book.. this is one of those ! I highly recommend it.

This was one of my textbooks as a beginner, and I found it very helpful. It has a large portion devoted to translation of hieroglyphic texts, and the instructions are clear and easy to understand. The overview of grammar given is worthwhile also. I would recommend this book to anyone beginning in their hieroglyphic studies!
