Needs an editor

Review Date: 2008-05-24
I bought this book to learn where Mormonism diverges from Christianity. It seems to contain this information. But the book definitely needs an editor for prose, layout, and word choice.

We have the account of acrimony between ex-wife and husband. That's a bit too personal for me, and not really salient - divorces in general are painful and messy affairs. We have underlined text - even whole paragraphs underlined. We have paragraphs all in italics. We have sentences all in capitals. We have centered paragraphs. We have sentences that mysteriously break in the middle of the line, only to continue on the next line. For good measure, we have words that done in all caps and underlined. And we have meandering prose. All we need is a little flashing "under construction" sign and we'd have the perfect 1995 web page.

The content is good. It contains paragraph-sized quotes from Mormon luminaries rather than sound bites, which can be deceptive. It goes through a number of the Mormon doctrines, how they came about, and how they differ from the Christian faith. So the book certainly delivers. It just doesn't deliver well.

Have done a lot of research of the Mormons. While I could follow the author through some of the book, much of it was hard to follow. Many typos and didn't seem too professionally done. However, I'm very happy for Mr. Bryant for finding his way out of this facade called Mormonism!

A cheap way to get ahold of some decent practice tests
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-27
I agree with the other reviewers in that the review portion of this book is not all that useful... however it does provide four full-length practice tests, with explanations on every answer. While these tests were written by Barron's and not by the AAMC, I've worked my way through them and found them to be very helpful in studying. If anything, for the price this book is going for, you should buy it just for the tests.

Good luck everybody!

Useless, doesn't reflect the real MCAT

I bought several books to study for the MCAT, including this one. I didn't even touch this one. It provides superfluous information that you don't even need on the MCAT and the practice exams do not the reflect the questions from the actual test.

This book is kindda pointless. It goes WAY into detail.. they cover things that seriously WON'T be covered on the mcat. I do NOT recommend this book whate-so-ever. There is no focus.

I barely use it

I barely even use this book as a resource. Lots of detail, not very useful in preparing you for the MCAT

The biology goes into a lot of details -- which is great -- but also not-so-great if you are trying to learn. It is like they expect you to know your stuff before you start reviewing. Hence, it could work on a better presentation.

While much of the basic information is good, it seems to be little more than a re-release of a book Sandusky did many years ago (the book claims that Penn State primarily uses a Split Six. It makes numerous references to Penn State's coverages, but unfortunately doesn't explain them.

The main problem is that the book seems to be very sloppily made. There are many pages misprinted, and the sample offensive plays shown are all screwed up- some repeated several times and others obviously missing.

I found it rather dissappointing, as you would think that a book from such a great coach, with such a great program, would have come out better organized, better edited, and more up to date.

Coach Sandusky makes some very good points in this book, but the editing is the worst I have seen. If you want to know more about linebacking you can get good information from this book, but you would get better info and details from Lou Tepper's book "Complete Linebacking", which is fantastic.

bioethics by scientists?
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-18
Most of the chapters in this book seem to be written by scientists, not academic philosophers or ethicists. So, unfortunately, they tend to not be very subtle, sophisticiated or carefully argued. I'd recommend something written by specialists in ethics, not scientists, to learn more about how to reasonably address some of the ethical issues that confront scientists. Almost any bioethics anthology edited by philosophers would do that.

I borrowed this book from the libary mostly because I was interested in looking at the chapters on animal experimentation. With the exception of the very fine chapter by philosophy Ray Frey, the remaining chapters on this issue were not up to snuff.

This guide will not allow you to pass the Cisco tests by its self. The book is only good in conjunction with the latest Cisco Press books.

The main problem is that this entire Sybex CCSP series is outdated. Cisco added to their tests and updated their books after these were written. (i am giving them the benefit of the doubt there). These book leave a ton of stuff out. There are also some errors in the questions.

Bottom line is that these books do not stand up by themselves.

Too pondering and academic, not enough about Philippine NGOs
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-26
I've read some of Raymond Bryant's books on Burma and was excited about how he fills the pages with rich facts and history. However, in this book, he does neither. Much of the first 100 pages is taken up with abstract and largely irrelevant academic questions about the nature of morality and altruism. Rather than focus on the subject of Philippine environmental NGOs, I felt the book focused too little on them and referred to them merely to talk more generally about the use of morality among NGOs. However, many of the conclusions were fairly obvious to informed citizens (that NGOs with moral stature are more effective and NGOs seek to create that reputation). Also, much of the research seems to date back to the late 1990s, which is very much out of date for a book that was published in 2006.

Ruins the fantasy world

Why would the Strawberry Shortcake friends have to take a school bus and be on a field trip to pick apples? In their other adventures, they manage to do all sorts of things on their own (unrealistically, sure), but suddenly they need the assistance of school to learn that apples grow from seeds!

I just don't understand why fantasy-killing school should even be involved in this story. It makes it much less fun when the kids have to have a "buddy". My daughters and I always enjoyed Strawberry Shortcake for its fun, fantastical world.

Ms. Browne's book title and subject are enticing but she fails to deliver on her promise to give Black women life lessons on growth. The book has a scholarly tone that only detracts from it. Additionally, the language is sterile, convoluted, and preachy--making the book difficult reading. Since the author purports to show Black women how we might grow, presumably, through self-discovery, she could have added power and credibility to her message had she personalized some of the information, or at least tell us stories about women who have changed their lives from the methods she outlines.

Recipes are Questionable
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-19
Someone needs to go through all the recipes and make sure they are doable and edible. My daughter and I tried a couple of recipes and they didn't come out right. I know other reviews complained about the recipes, so that should clue someone to revise the book to where it's not a disappointment to the kids. It was very discouraging for my daughter.

This is a very cute cookbook. However I had the same experience as the other review before me. We tried to make the brownies and there is definitely an ingredient missing. If you follow the insructions the recipe does not work at all. They are not even edible. This is the only recipe we have tried so far so hopefully the other ones turn out better because the cookbook is very cute and my daughter was so excited about it.

As the other reviewers stated, there are missing ingredients AND missing instructions in this book. We've tried probably 6 of the recipes and have yet to discover one that is worth repeating - and 3 of them weren't edible. This is NOT the way to encourage young ones to learn to love to cook and bake - nothing like putting in time, effort and ingredients and then not be able to enjoy the results. I purchased mine through the Scholastic book program at my daughter's preschool and would encourage them to get rid of this title. I can only assume the other Strawberry Shortcake cookbooks are equally poor.

Some Recipe Problems

Review Date: 2006-09-15
I'm not overly sure who wrote this book, but Grosset and Dunlap should probably look into getting their money back. While the book has a very cute cover, some neat little cookie cutters, and some great Strawberry Shortcake stories to read with your child, some of the recipes are just wrong. Many of them are missing the necessary ingredients to have a good product at the end of the baking process. For example, Strawberry Shortcake's Holiday Wish Brownies come out more like a holiday nightmare if you follow the book's instructions. Want hard, burnt, greasy blobs of chocolate? This recipe is so for you in that case.

My daughter (2) and I love to cook together, and she loves Strawberry Shortcake, but this is not a book we will use to cook out of unless we want Santa to be wholly disgusted with our food.
