It's just another textbook that is rather boring. The text is just bla bla bla boring. It drags and drags. The prof I have right now actually wrote in the book, so that is why I had to purchase it for my class. I would not have purchased it if it wasn't for that. Textbooks are just so boring sometimes!

I'm not really into the feminist stuff, but it did teach me some historical figures.

The fourth Flashing Swords anthology is only average, with the same breezy type of introduction by Carter.

Flashing Swords 4 : 1 The Bagful of Dreams - Jack Vance
Flashing Swords 4 : 2 The Tupilak - Poul Anderson
Flashing Swords 4 : 3 Storm in a Bottle - John W. Jakes
Flashing Swords 4 : 4 Swords Against the Marluk - Katherine Kurtz
Flashing Swords 4 : 5 The Lands Beyond the World - Michael Moorcock

Realistic heroines

Heroines:  varied

Follow the cases of a very determined, very eclectic group of amateur sleuths. In "Kennedy's Commandos" the ladies take on survival training camp and teach some hard-nosed military men a few new tricks. In "Sins of Touch" the girls unravel the threads of a topsy-turvy case involving stalking, extortion, and the shooting of a male stripper.

What worked for me:
I particularly enjoyed reading about the Girls' hijinks in the short story "Kennedy's Commandos", which was a pleasant introduction to the various women involved in this cadre of detectives.
As far as size goes, it wasn't really an issue in these stories. Some of the ladies presented were larger, some were smaller. Some were old and some were young. All were intelligent, funny, and passionate about their work.

What didn't work for me:
There were some editing oversights which made for a slightly bumpy read.
The large cast of characters in "Sins of Touch" was at times difficult to keep track of, and provided less opportunity to develop a rapport with individual Gumshoe Girls as in the less-populated "Kennedy's Commandos".

Overall:
Editing issues aside the stories were enjoyable, quirky, and worth having a look at. I'd love to see the Gumshoe Girls cross paths with their erstwhile trainers from the survival camp again in future stories.

The first part of the book was great - a practical guide in how to come to terms with the close encounter experience. Unfortunately, it is then combined with channeled material, etc. stating who the ET's are, with messages from, well, from wherever... This book would have been best separated into two books, one on the CE4 experience, and one on the authors' theories behind the phenomenon.

A Lasting History
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-05
Bryant, a historian of American business and University Dean, originally wrote this book in 1974 and it has been reprinted because of its timelessness. The book is a history text with limited illustrations. In very readable fashion, Bryant tells the story of the Santa Fe from Colonel Holliday's initial vision until 1971. No geographic region is singled out for special focus. This book has been the standard text on the history of the Santa Fe since its publication.

Used the tour guide extensively that gave me suggestions of where to go and what to do......when there the rest was up to me as not very much info was available in the book except minimum summaries. Still, I consider the book as a good guide.

I purchased this book at full price and expected an immaculate coffee table book. I was surprised that this pricey book is FILLED with ADS for cars, watches, magazines, airlines, etc! Not something I would expect in such an expensive book. I was disappointed.

This book is actually pretty relatable for any elementary school girl that likes horses. Boys tend to pick on them becuase they happen to like a specific hobby. In this book the real problems arise when May punches Will, a boy who has been teasing Jasmine about her like of horses. Jasmine gets upset because she wanted to deal with the problem her own way: by ignoring the boy until he lost interest in harassing her.

The story is a bit stilting, like the author was a little unsure of how to adjust her style to better suit a younger audience than the "Saddle Club" readers. Overall an OK book good for 3rd graders and up but I can definitely say that this series gets much better as the books go on so keep reading!
