As such this book is not reviewed by anyone. A sole review, as on 21 August 2000, so far from "A reader from New Hampshire" is requesting info. and has given five star rating.

That is misleading. So please note.

I found Exam cram set better.

Anita Bryant gives a vivid account of her struggle in the 70's. She clearly presents her worldview, and the lessons she learned as she worked to protect her kids and others' children from militant homosexuals. I found her book to be full of solid answers about a meaningful Christian reponse to "alternative lifestyles." One of her statements that I have found to be especially true is this: "Homosexuality is a spiritual problem."

Exactly what I needed

I'm in the EDA business, and the book gave me exactly what I needed, and in a very accessible way, too. In my case I needed to learn about SAT and about algorithms for handling bitvectors (I will probably need arrays and pointers at some point later on, given the project I am involved in). Many of the things there I assumed I knew (I read some papers in this field and I discuss it regularly with colleagues at work. I also looked at code of a SAT solver), but reading it really organized things for me very well.

Disappointing

I am very familiar with the field of decision procedures, but I bought this book to use it as a quick reference and a refresher in certain areas. However, when I read the book I was very disappointed. The only good thing about the book is the table of contents and the list of references. Many important results and theorems are missing. No explanations or derivations of any of the presented results are provided.

I was hoping that this book would be a good introduction (or reference) to the field of decision procedures, but unfortunately, going directly to the research papers is a much better investment of your time (and money).

The following references provide an excellent coverage of the field:

1. "Constraint Processing", by Rina Dechter. This is an excellent reference on Constraint Solving, which is similar to decision procedures, but focuses more on finite-domain problems.
2. "Decision Procedures for Bit-Vectors, Arrays and Integers", Ph.D. Thesis by Vijay Ganesh, 2007.
3. "Searching for Truth: Techniques for Satisfiability of Boolean Formulas", Ph.D. Thesis by Lintao Zhang, 2003.
4. "Efficient Algorithms for Clause-Learning SAT Solvers", M.Sc. Thesis by Lawrence Ryan, 2003.

Jane Bryant Quinn has a fun, entertaining, attention grabbing way of communicating. This book is out-of-date, so details may not be helpful. However, this is full of good, basic education on personal finance. Great for anyone grappling with this difficult subject for the first time. She cuts to the most important aspects and explains things in down to earth terms, without letting it be boring. When you've mastered these concepts, get it's sequel, Making the Most of Your Money.

A previous amateur reviewer has complained that this book is "obsessed with armour" and that he wishes this book gave a more definitive history of the Samurai. Well, what were you expecting from this series? It's primarily directed at re-enactors and model makers who really need all of those nitpicky details. If you're really serious about studying the history of Japan, then go to the library and crack some serious history books. This book, like others in the series, gives a good introduction to a particular time period and location and a good overview of the material culture.

Bizarre fixation on armor

This book has an obsessive fixation on armor. It is actually very annoying, not to mention quite strange. What is the deal with all of Anthony Briant's book and this fixation on armor? Jeeez! It goes into way too much detail about the armor (every name for every little strap and hook) and is just way more than the layperson needs to know when trying to understand the samurai. I can't even read through it because it's so mundane. There is so much more that one needs to understand about the samurai besides their armor, and this book does little to remedy that. What little discussion there is of the other apsects of the samurai's lives and training is useful, but it is only a small part of the book. The title of this book should be changed to "Armor of the Samurai".

I dislike writing negative reviews but sometimes they are necessary and unfortunately this is one of those times. ;-(.

1. Ms. Bryant feels that performorming ceremony is a more valid method to open doors to the Shmanic state of consciousness than others. IMHO Drumming, fasts, meditation, or thirsts work better. Thankfuly she does not recommend the halucinogens.

2. Ms. Bryant delves into Celtic, Egyptian, and Various Amerindian mythologies.

3. Ms. Bryant includes channeled information. I am not dismissing all channeled information. I am merely pointing out that it is difficult to discern the difference.

4. This book deals exclusively with upper world journeying and completely ignores Lower and middle world journeying.

If you wish to explore shaamanism, I highly recommend the following.

"Secrets of Shamanism: tapping the spirit power within you" Jose and Lena Stevens

"Shamanism: As A Spiritual Practise For Daily Life" Tom Cowan

"The Way of the Shaman" Michael Harner

Starwalking

Review Date: 2002-03-29
A professional psychic and intuitive counselor for more than twenty-five years, Page Bryant has studied such diverse subjects as astronomy, physics, astrology, Buddhism, kabbalah, theosophy, numerology, psychology, ecology, geomancy, and ancient religions. She is a noted lecturer and author of numerous books. Her latest, Starwalking: Shamanic Practices for Traveling Into the Night Sky, teaches readers "about gaining knowledge of and forming a relationship with the heavens."
Bryant says that "we are star born," and that our earliest ancestors had the ability to "travel" to the stars and return with essential knowledge. She adds that "the Sun, Moon, and other planetary bodies and phenomena in the solar system influence life on Earth." We have the option of continuing to ignore our "Celestial Legacy" or we can attempt to reconnect with it.
She provides specifics on how to access "stellar power" and how to use it "for purposes of individual and personal growth, as well as for the benefit of the planet and all that lives." Bryant describes several ceremonies and sacred rituals essential for starwalking. She also includes directions for making Star Bundles, shields, and masks for ceremonial purposes.
Bryant says "it is my desire to inspire all of us with the wonder of the heavens and to help insure that none of us ever again loses the magic that wonder and awe bring. It is time to become conscious that we are children of the universe, to truly take our place in the cosmic scheme of things."
Readers who are not interested in personally learning to become starwalkers or otherwise draw upon the power of the skies will nevertheless find that Bryant's experience and knowledge make her book an engrossing read. Those readers wishing to travel beyond the bounds of Earth will find Starwalking an indispensable reference.

I just began reading "Tell Me Something Pretty" but I doubt I'll be able to finish it. Although the story is compelling, the frequent typos and misspellings distract me so much that I lose more and more respect for the author and editor with every page. This book was obviously not proof-read, at least not by someone with a command of the English language. I'm disappointed.

After thoroughly enjoying Gale's first two books, "Sins of Touch" and "Kennedy's Commandos" about the often-hilarious adventures of her Gumshoe Girls, I eagerly anticipated this new book "Tell Me Something Pretty". I was surprised to find that this is not fiction about her Gumshoe Girls, but a true life story about herself and an ill fated romance she had with a bona fide con man after the breakup of her long marriage. From the moment I started reading, I could hardly put the book down. Her story is told in intimate detail, great humor and sarcasm. The only bad thing about the book is that the story ended. It was also interesting to learn what she was doing at the times she was writing her first two books (or at least the first two that I read). I highly recommend this book.

Better Researched on Military than Society
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-23
This is the last volume in the author's series on the British during the wars with France. As such, his emphasis really is on the military and naval expeditions and the peace conferences. Those chapters I found easier reading than most military science books, so I certainly recommend it if you are wanting to get acquainted with the Peninsular campaign. He does fairly slight the war in the east against Napoleon, because the British weren't in it. I was particularly impressed with his attention to the details of what life was like for officers and men between battles, something usually skipped in the concentration on strategy and tactics. If this were all it attempted to cover, I would give it four stars.

His chapters on life in England at the time, especially the festivities around the allied sovreigns after victory, seem essentially good in their description of the countryside, the towns, and the people. However, I noted that his descriptions of some notables of London society were built on common myths of them, rather than better researched fact. Most especially, his handling of Brummell (my present object of research) struck me as so thoroughly apocryphal, built on later Brummelliana rather than actual memoirs of the man, that it made me wary of accepting the author's information on anyone around him. A book you can only use once you have researched in other books for confirmation everything it says, is an unnecessary detour. For the reader interested in the view of England, I could only give it two stars for insecurity, and recommend that you hunt down Priestly's 'Prince of Pleasure,' 1969 instead.

There are NO illustrations in 'The Age of Elegance', except a few battle maps, indicative of the real emphasis of the 400+ pages. At the end, I felt I had picked up an excellent milsci book half the size that had been padded out with the peacetime/home front chapters that are less focused and less deeply researched in original materials.

The author's style is easy and fluid in the military chapters, without technical gobbledegook: again, excellent for a deep introduction. The other half of the book reads like a compilation of newspaper clippings rewritten by him, as it zooms over the surface of so many subjects, from rural housholds to the supposed mind of this great man or that in reaction to conditions (I distrust his opinions here, as superficial).

half novel, half bio
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-03
This is a well-written and imaginative book....half novel, half biography. The author writes in the style of a traditional, conventional biography, only without source notes. However, the neat trick here is that a great deal of the quoted material, though not all of it, is made up. Only an expert on Wallace would be able to tell the difference between the factual and fictional references. It's very clever...almost Nabokovian. My only complaint is that the extent to which the work is fictional is not made clear. I believe that most people who read the book would walk away with the belief that it was non-fiction and so to some extent this book is fraudulent. I also believe it is self-published, something which should also be made clear. Nonetheless, it is a well-written fantasy of Wallace's life woven into a well-written reasonably accurate framework.

In preparing for Cisco exams, I read the Amazon reviews before deciding on study material. When I decided to pursue a CCSP certification, I was disappointed to see the poor reviews that the Sybex books received. The only book to receive good reviews was the 642-501 Secur book.

I then saw that Sybex had released a brand new "Complete" book for the CCSP. I assumed that Sybex would read reviews such as the ones listed in Amazon to improve this publication. I believe I was wrong. I can not be completely sure but I believe that this Complete version is just a combination of the individual books, with no updating.

I used this Complete book to study for the 642-501 (seeing as how the individual Sybex book received decent reviews). The disturbing item was that the Secur section of the Complete book still did not include information on SDM and Router MC, two topics that I was quizzed on when I took the exam. Fortunately, I had read the Amazon reviews on the individual book and was prepared by supplementing my study on these two items.

I am forced to believe that the publication of this book was an effort by Sybex to soley make money and not to better their their product offering.

I used the CiscoPress book to pass the 642-511 exam. I am currently using the CiscoPress book to study for the 642-521 exam.
