How to fight the Kuei-jin way.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-07
This is a very well done book about how Asian vampires fight. It explains the political/historical/religious reasons for the different rules used to conduct them. All of the background info on why these fights are handled in they way they are gives a good feel to the politics and mood of the Kuei-jin courts.

The first section is about "twilight wars", which are very ritualized conflict between kuei-jin used to settle a dispute. The book lists several different types to twilight wars and when they are used. The main problem that I had with this section was that there are a lot of different type of twilight wars, and most of them are not given examples of how they work in more detail. The second section is about "midnight wars", which unlike the twilight wars are only completed by the destruction of one of the sides involved. Even with fight ting of this level the rules and rituals must be followed. There is also a discussion of tactics used, though anyone who has read Sun Tzu's Art of War will find it very familiar.

The third section is about the conflicts raging between the older more traditional Kuei-jin and the newer more modern and westernized ones. It gives the rather different tactics used by both sides in this conflict.

The fifth section is the only one that will have much use to a campaign dealing with western vampires. This section is about what the Kuei-jin are doing in the West Coast of America and Australia. It explains their organization, opposition, tactics and what they're motives are. Trust me it's interesting.

There is also a chapter about organizations used in the fighting and notable characters. Over all this is a very good book with a lot of information about how Kuei-jin fight, but it is of very little to no use for campaigns dealing only with the childer of Cain.

Practical and Inspired

In spite of the fact that this self-published book could have used a good editor, it is well-written, informative, and inspirational. The author does an excellent job of combining science, history, mythology, and her own psychic visions to make a compelling case for the importance of the Great Smoky Mountains, both ecologically and spiritually. A compelling and informative book.

This book was pretty good but it wasn't one of those bookswhere you can't put it down. It was interesting, no real conflict/climax.

Another great Saddle Club project

I think Stage Coach was one of the best of the Saddle Club series. It helps you to understand that you can't do everything. I think it's a great book for someone who is a novice rider and is discouraged because they're having a tough time!

Emotional Experience!

The books content was insightful and profound. The focus was on transitions that the author and many individuals experience. The words captured the sound and feel of intenese emotions. The passages seem to awaken parts of your soul as you not only read, but can visualize and feel the moments being described. The poetry is earthy and has a ring of honesty that seems to grab you.

I enjoyed reading it and loved how the author Shelia D. Bryant's vivid describtions created stirrings of intense emotions causing tears, smiles and laughs. The Foreword which was written by Fredia Carter was thought provoking.

Cute book, on the cheesy side but my daughter loves it - she is 2 1/2. Filly friends is one of her favorites, short enough words she is starting to memorize alot of it.

An interesting read

I read this booklet in all of one hour.

It was an interesting statement of what Mr Bryant found successful in his marriage and friendships. The friendship part was particularly interesting because Bryant doesn't like to socialize. (Like me.)

I did not agree with every thing he said, but it was thought provoking, very well written, and entertaining.

I will read more of his books.

Comprehensive history of coastal resorts

Review Date: 2008-05-26
I spent my summers visiting various coastal resorts in New England, so I enjoyed leafing through the pages of this book and revisiting some of my favorite haunts. While I can't appreciate the subtle architectural detail discussed in this volume, I did appreciate the historical background that was presented as a context at many points in the book. And, of course, the pictures are wonderful, from the coffee-table appropriate cover shot to the many black and white period photos that support the narrative.
