Not as good as the first two, but a worthy book

The People's Almanacs were incredibly important to me growing up. My parents had the first two almanacs, and through them I learned about everything from historical events to inventions, religion to sex, movie trivia to more about sports than I ever actually cared about. The hundreds upon hundreds of pages of information packed into each book ended up being read and re-read numerous times over the years, and I still have the original copies in my home today.

So I was excited to find out there was a third volume out there. I'm rather sad to say that this one wasn't quite as good as the other two. It wasn't as long, and it seemed as though the editors were rather stretching for content this time around.

Still, I found it to be a very informative read. I particularly liked the stories of real-life castaways and how they survived, bios of famous gangsters, and the descriptions of unusual collections. The articles came across as well-researched (as always) and covered a variety of aspects of human existence. This third almanac was true to the format, too, with a nice array of illustrations to perk up the text a bit.

Overall, while I didn't like this one as much as the first two, the third People's Almanac is definitely staying on the shelf with the other two.

A good book with a open-minded view of the spiritual gifts

The book is very easy to read, the subject is clear. The arguments are really good and it had been well researched. In addition, it has many sciptures quotations. The only problem, that I see in the whole book was about the questionaire, that are a suggetion in order to help you discover what gifts do you have. That is my personal opinion. However, people could not agree with me. It was worth the time reading and meditating on the subject.

I am a novice grounded theory researcher. I have read Glaser, Strauss, Srauss and Corbin, Charmaz and Clarke's books. Every time I need to bring it all together I can rely on this book to show me how. I would not substitute it for the others but it has been indispensable in trying to figure out what the heck I am trying to do. There is always a different perspective that is useful in bringing it together.

World of the Crusades - a different view
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-15
Sara Wilson in the Historical Novels Review said that this is "a fasinating snapshot into the world of the Crusades." It focuses on a young Bedouin noblewoman who seeks to avoid a tribal death warrant in 12th century Arabia. Wilson said "Arabia is beautifully recreated, but ultimately this is a story about people and not places. . . . Not just a love story, a thriller, or a straight historical but rather an impressive blend of all three. . . . an epic filled with emotion and rich with atmosphere - as heady as the hashish smoke swirling around the desert tents."

Beautiful Illustrations!

This book contains a noble message with beautiful illustrations. However, the way it is written is not quite as captivating to the younger audience as Nunes' "Daughter of a King" is. Adults will probably get more out of it than teens or pre-teens. Still, it is a book written to inspire the reader to ponder the meaning and value of selfless service, which can be a hard sell, but Nunes gives it a decent attempt.

I got this book from the Author herself and gave it to my sister for her birthday. It's a good read for teenage girls, maybe ages 13 to 16. My sister really liked it.
