I thought that this was a pretty good book, how they learned how to drive and work together. But the cover says that they are too young. I've figured out that they should be about 20 by now. And Lisa should be 21! oh well i recommend this book it was a good read.

Good, but I wish they'd bring back the old covers

This is a pretty good book, not one on the best, but I think it's really neat how there learning to drive! I really wish they'd bring back the old covers with the drawings on them. This cover just has a blur of a horse in the back round! Plus they look way to young and would you were clothes like that to a barn? I think not! What happened to the tall boots and breeches? No hiking boots and kakis! Come on Bonnie, you can do better, I know you can!

Sure, the cover's dumb, but it's a GREAT BOOK!

A lot of people have said that ever since Sidesaddle, Bonnie's books have gone DOWNHILL! Well, huh, I have one thing to say to them; I totally-well-WHAT PLANET DID YOU COME FROM! Nobody even pay attention to them! I had to find out for myself if they were right, so I bought this book. I opened it thinking it was going to be the worst book ever. I read it straight through. I found myself forgetting that the cover was different too. I hate the covers, though! I wish they'd bring the old ones back-but that's no reason not to appreciate a great story! Buy this book; find out 4 yourself! Bonnie's got as much heart in her stories as ever!

Stevie, Carole and Lisa are attending a horse show, the prestigious Kentucky Rolex. Their friend Nigel is competing a promising horse called Southwood that is being considered for the Olympics. They spend their free time when not helping at the stable, touring the fairgrounds, and avoiding Nigel's groom's younger brother, who they mistakenly believe is a geek. On a trail ride, they discover a loose horse they call Ghost, a gentle and rundown horse. Ghost's real identity is a surprise to them all.

Only problem is that Ghost was described as "gray-white.' Light colored horses are just called gray. As Lisa learned in book three of the series, "it's a sign of a real beginner when they call a horse white."

In this story the girls of the Saddle Club realize that they might just have to give something ( or someone I should say ) a chance! But when not giving this person a chance they were also having fun and that's the important thing. This book really comes alive and I recommend it to Saddle Club fans!

I loved the book. If you like jumping and alot of adventures your looking for Gold Medal horse. Bonnie Bryant did great on this book. I've read alot of Saddle club books and this is the one for me. It's about them all. How Nigel gets nervous before he starts his course. I couldn't belive how wonderful this book was.

In this book the Saddle Club goes to the Kentucky Rolex to watch their friends' horse Southwood jump to try out for the Olympics. His owners don't think he is ready to be pushed hard, but a horse who never had a chance changes his mind. Southwood jumps extremely well and makes the Olympic team. It was a little boring and didn't have much of a plot. Good, but not one of the best.

A very good book for horse lovers

this book was AWESOME! i really like it when carole thinks she might get a cool stamp for writing to the Arab pesident's daughter, but gets a gang of agents instead! even though som e of the parts are unreal, like when they think veronica's a spy. yeah, right. or when the gaurd doesn't know horses shoes are metal. get real. but really, i think it was a great and exitingbook, one of the best.

When Carole finds out that a president of a middle eastern country is coming to visit with his horse crazy daughter, it only seems natural to invite her to ride at Pine Hollow. But when she shows up with a dozen secruity guards it seems like there won't be any time for a nice relaxing trail ride, because there would never be a spy at Pine Hollow, or would there? read this awesome saddle club book to find out.

The back really makes you want to read the book but I don't really think it is worth the money. Also, the back doesn't really have anything to do with the main plot, or who the spy is. It has to do with one of the snobby girls' moms trying to get this rider to act like a beginner at pine hollow and then suddenly ride away with the other girl's horse. Then the horse gets hurt, and that is what is supposed to happen, not some person trying to kill the president's daughter. Then the Saddle Club and the presidents daughter go trail riding the hour this spy kinda person decides to hurt the horse by like galloping like heck. Then you know what happens, they catch the spy and there is a happy ending. I think some of Bonnie Bryants books are getting kinda off target they are also kind of predictable. The old books are much, much better and worth the money.

All Carole wants to do is go on a trail ride!

When Carole Hanson (or Carl Hanzen as the security guy calls her) writes the president of Arab Democratic Republic's Daughter (Karya) to visit Pine Hollow just so she could get a reply and get a stamp for her Dad's birthday. Also she and her best friends Stevie Lake and Lisa Atwood are getting up early to work with some champion horses, Polaris and Jennie's Blue. Then Carole gets an answer to her letter..... men in black suits with sunglasses (men in black as Stevie dubs them) scanning horses with metal detctors who get scared when the horses shoes respond! Why is all this happening? All Carole wanted was to go on a trail ride! Nothing would happen to Karya at Pine Hollow! Or would it? I like this book because it has some very funny parts in it and it tells you a lot about the Saddle Club. The end is pretty exciting but I'll leave you to see what the end is.

Becaue I purchased this book for reasons of research I was disappointed that there was not more "meat" to it. There were few "insights" and very little technical information. The most irritating part of the work was the writing style and content. Style was an overdone and overused theme of "wings" and content was practically nonexistent. My money would have been better spent on textbooks of brain.

I was reluctant to read this book, having been disapointed many times with head-injury survival stories. I picked it up, and I simply couldn't put it down! It was incredible, the way you cry, and laugh, and smile, and even become angry at her actions! I must say this is easily the best book on head-injury I have read. I cannot see how your life could be fulfilled without reading this masterpiece.

It is a roller coaster of emotions and an unbelievably optimistic journey through the aftermath of brain injury. Bev Bryant's story is an incredible inspiration. I have read it many times over. This book should be featured on Oprah...a true literary achievement!

I am a brain surgery survivor (18 months) and buy almost every book that has something to say on the topic. I must admit tht I am partial to the survivor's' telling his or her own story rather than the well meaning but clueless caretaker telling the survivor's story. The well meaning caretaker is not disabled and doesn't live in the survivors's shoes! That's why I am recommending this book. I thought the poems were a little much and perhaps too sentimental but the message blew me away. I didn't put the book down. I only recently began to read again and this book is a keeper.

Shining Star

On the court with Kobe Bryant by: Matt Christopher. Its s a young star named Kobe Bryant, that lived in Los Angeles CA. He lived with is father Joe (Jellybean) Bryant. They both loved basketball, Joe played in the NBA and played for the Knicks. Joe taught Kobe a lot of it. When Kobe went to High School, he played basketball too. He went to Lower Marion High. He had good grades all year round, that's why he got drafted out of high school for the NBA. Kobe was drafted in 1997 to the Phoenix Suns and the LA. Lakers traded a 1-2 draft picks for him. In 1997 he won rookie of the year award in 1999 he won the slam dunk contest. 2000-2003 they won the finals in a row. They have the most finals won in the entire NBA.

Kobe Bryant maybe one of the youngest basketball players in the NBA. He is the son of Joe"Jeallybean" Bryant, a basketball player and star of various European teams. Kobe's childhood watching professional basketball games made him pick up a basketball for the first time. He was learning how to shoot and dribble. His basketball education was a unique combination of lessons on basic fundamentals, one-on-one game against his dad, and keen observation and analysis of the world's best players. Kobe learned his lesson well, and at age 18 he was given the chance to prove it. He was drafted into the NBA when he was fresh out of high school. Kobe showed that he had the talent and the heart to make it in the pros. From one out of five, I rate this book a five because it made me want to play basketball.

I literally read this book in one day. Written in a free-style poem form, I found it was extremely easy to zip through the storyline and characters of this book. Although "Pieces of Georgia" wasn't the kind of story that gnaws at your mind like a good one does (even after you are finished with it), it was still a novel that made you think about your life and how it related to Georgia's. I would recommend anyone to buy this book, and I truly believe the moral is even greater than the price! :-)

I saw this book in my library's new release section and was attracted to it because of the form of writing-- it's in stanzas.

Because of how it's written, it's a pretty quick read, but it's most def. worth it. It's a really cute story with elements not atypical to a preteen/teenage novel, but (refreshingly) not filled with too many cliches or drama.

I bought this book for my 11-year-old daughter whose friend's mother died unexpectedly recently. (It covers this topic). It is a great book and very touching. She is a high achieving reading, however, and she finished the book in under an hour. So its not a week long read for a child of this age by any means. I loved the book itself though. I had gone to a large chain bookstore to purchase the book and it was listed at $16 or $17, and I could see that it would be a quick read for her, so I was really happy to find it on Amazon at the low price. It was totally worth the purchase at that price.

I've been wanting to lose weight for so long, I have tried everything on earth. After reading his book I know I will get to the finish line. With this as an insparation and my Lord Jesus Christ I can't and won't lose. Everyone should have a copy of this wonderful book. I just mailed my copy to my sister-in-law for her and my nephew to read. I am tellling everyone that I know to read this wonderful book. Thank you Michael

Review Date: 2007-12-27
I think this story sends a terrible message to children. Michael Miller bullies his way through the court system and vilifies the multitudes of professionals that attempt to help him on his path. One of my favorite negative blanket statements that he makes is on page 110 when he states that many social workers just "seem to be lazy or they have too many cases to manage". Wow that is a powerful statement coming from someone without a job who decided after 6 years that he felt like finding all the children he fathered and ignored while he was selling drugs on the street. I also enjoyed the part where he glorified his drunk aunt "cursing out a police officer" that pulled him over.
However, my favorite inspirational lesson came in chapter 9 when Mr. Miller claims that he drove to Morehouse college, told the secretary to the Dean of Admissions that he would not take no for an answer, only to be welcomed to an unscheduled meeting with the Dean. During this interview, Mr. Miller claims that he told the Dean that Morehouse college would be funding his tuition in its entirety simply because he didn't want to stress about it anymore. Here's the excerpt...
He said, "Okay. Well, how do you plan on paying a hundred thousand dollars to go to Morehouse College, Mr. Miller?"
I said, "Now, that's a good question! Well, I guess Moorehouse is going to pay for it. I know this college doesn't offer transfer scholarships, but I'd love to have my matriculation funded by a scholarship from Morehouse College. I can't go back to Baltimore to finish my last semester and worry about paying for Morehouse College. Now, I think you think I'm crazy. That's because I am. Now, what's it going to be?"
He Said, "Okay, I'll tell you what; give me some time next week and we'll see."
I said, "Ah, ah, no no. I need to know this right now. I've been stressed out over this for too long, and I don't want to be just another phone call. Can we make this happen? Do we have a deal?"

After which of course the dean tells him he likes his style and gives him a full ride.
I don't know what world he is living in, but I work with at-risk children, and this is not what I would recommend for them to try in order to work towards their dreams. If this did happen, which I question, it does not happen normally, and this book that is supposed to be inspirational gives terrible messages about the means by which this man reached his goals. I commend him for getting his education, but there are multitudes of people who have turned their lives around in this country who came from atrocious childhoods, who chose not to ignore their many illegitimate children, sell drugs, curse out cops, judges, college counselors, and secretaries to achieve their goals. I'd rather read their books.

A Promise to Persevere is a must read for of all ages. Miller is transparent and motivating throughout the entire book. From the first chapter, Miller challenges the reader to look within and reflect upon goals while also making it clear that success can become a reality. Further, A Promise to Persevere proves that forgiveness is one of the necessary steps to experience greatness and success.

Like others, the printing errors annoyed me, but the story is so compelling that I soon overlooked them. As tense as "Fail Safe" if not more, and nothing like "Strangelove" other than the surface details.

Completely gripping, the story moves forward like a juggernaut to it's chilling yet believable ending. One of my favorite cold war novels.

For those of us who remember "duck and cover" exercises in elementary school, this is a must read.

This original story of a US Airforce base commander issuing a preemptive nuclear attack on Russia was adapted by Stanley Kubrick and Terry Southern for their film version released as "Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb". In spite of its campy title Kubick and Southern added dark comedy to Peter George's cold war thriller. It has been reported that George was not particularly fond of this rendition of his novel, but he collaborated and eventually condoned it, however grudgingly.
The novel is much more serious and has the technical aspects of Kubrick's version such as the message scrambler CRM 114 and Russia's Doomsday Machine. This reprint, in spite of annoying misprints throughout the text still grips the reader in the tension of a nuclear holocaust. Definitely worth reading if you love the movie. Be aware that Kubrick changed all the characters' names into double entendres, there is no Dr. Stranglove in the novel, and the ending is quite different from the movie. A must read for "Strangelove" fans.

Good Story, Terrible Printing

I have just started reading the novel but am having trouble finishing it. The story itself is actually quite good. I like the author's style more than anything but this edition of the novel is the most unprofessional book I have ever read. I am not even half way through it and have found more spelling errors than one could believe. Judging by the numerous whole-word replacements like, "...truth [trust] no one..." and "... 200 miles from the short [shore]..." and whole word omissions, it seems that the novel was written on Microsoft Word. There are also time conflicts with confusion between a.m. and p.m. and events that must have taken place after other events given a time before those events.
I myself am a terrible speller and usually read right over such mistakes, but these are so numerous and so obvious that I cringe thinking about all those I missed. They are a distraction to the story and show the poor quality of the editorial staff.
If you can find an earlier printing of this book, buy that copy. So far, it is worth the read, but not the frustration.

A great story well written. Must read.

Red Alert (originally published as Two Hours to Doom in Gt Britain) is an excellent book: gripping, tense, written in good, economical, and forceful language, and (to this very civilian layman, at least) marvellously realistic. I can see why Stanley Kubrick bought the film rights to this little novel: its storyline alone is well worth the price of admission, and with Kubrick and Terry Southern's collective imagination working it up to the screenplay for Dr. Strangelove, it could not miss as a film. Peter Bryant/Peter George did exceedingly well with this book and it remains an excellent read. My only criticism is that the current edition issued for sale has not been sufficiently proofread and edited: there are some typos and omitted words in the text. If the present publishers would amend these minor flaws, this little book would be that much better to read, very good as it is anyway. The Cold War may be over, but this story set in the late 1950s is still a cracking good read. Nothing like a thoroughly good and credible Cold-war thriller to fire the imagination and to get the blood racing. A five-star+ rating.

The Saddle Club: Carole, Stevie and Lisa take a trip out West to visit their friend Kate, a championship rider, whose parents run a dude ranch. Trouble is brewing in the form of a rival dude ranch which is stealing away business from the Bar None, Kate's family's ranch. When they impulsively register for a barrel racing contest, they hope to win, even though they are amateurs, but more importantly, they hope to garner positive publicity for the ranch. A nice change from the English riding themed books in the series.

I have read other books in the series where the saddle club visited Kate and Christene, and they were fine. Enjoyable, quite actually. This one was far from it. The whole book seemed to keep riders thinking that western was so much better than english. Horseback riding descrimination. To tell you the truth, those silly dusters they adored so much over their english 'togs' are enough to make any person look like they're a real dude. (Even though I am an English rider) They kept saying how the rodeo was so much more fun compared to any other show they'd ever seen! To tell you the truth, I found most of the book quite boring. The English competitions were a lot more exciting in my opinion, and another thing to point out, when they went to English horse shows they didn't say, "Wow. Isn't this the best competition than any we've ever seen?" I found myself skimming listlessly over paragraphs trying to finish this horrid book. Then, at the end, when the girls were finally back in Pine Hollow, they were saying, "Don't you wish you were back at the bar none?" "Yeah, much more exciting than this place." Well, whoop de doo. At this point, they could just pack their bags, move back out west, change their club name to the bar none riders and compete in more of those stupid rodeo competitions for all I care. Just don't expect me to pick up another book again in the series if they did that. There was some saddle club mischief that was non-descriminal, but it wasn't enough to keep this book from going down the toilet. I hope the next one I read is about Pine Hollow, but of course, it isn't NEARLY as exciting as their beloved "Bar None". Well, I'm sorry but I did not like this book. Most people think that english riders are snots that look down on western riders. After reading this book, they should reconfigure that fact! I am insulted that they would want to trash the riding that I love most in this book. Especially coming from the saddle club! Mrs. Bryant, whom I've come to respect through some of the better ones, can just shove this one up her ass.

It was an excellent book--and educational. I ride English, and I knew just about nothing about Western Rider. If anyone asked me about Western riding before this book, I'd just say, "WEstern? Oh yeah, the one with the horn." I knew nothing at all about Rodeo before this. It gives plenty of information about Cowgirl Barrel Racing, Bronco Riding, Calf Roping, and Steer Wrestling.
It was an excellent book, and I HIGHLY recomend it--especially to people who love rodeo!

I liked this one because it involved barrel racing and rodeo. It was definately exciting. The only thing that I read that was odd was that the bronc riders had to stay on for 10 seconds instead of 8? What's the deal with that? Oh well. I guess it's no big deal. It was still a great book.

This book was fantastic! I love any kind of riding, especially western. My friends and I, who ride any type of riding, even created a club called the Stirrup Stars! Anyway, this book was funny, plus it made you feel as if you were really there at the rodeo! A highly recommended book for all horse-lovers.

This book was an excellent read. It gave beautiful insights into the magic, mystery and spiritual life of ancient Egypt. It looked at the journey of Star Priestesses, the value of visions and it's effect on the Pharoah Kufu.

This book and I are not a match made in the heavens. I'm a slow reader, and the story is a slow mover, and the two together make for a tedious read.

For me the book was overly intellectual, there was not enough action or emotion. The story is so dry at times it's almost textbook like. Attention to detail is taken to the extreme, and often does nothing to further the plot lines or character development.

I only read the first 120 pages, and I couldn't take it anymore and gave up. Several metaphysical concepts where introduced, such as lucid dreaming, and visions, and channeling, but I did not find the insights from these activities particularly enlightening in the book.

The book is almost 500 pages, so maybe it gets better as it goes along. Unfortunatly I'm just not interested enough to find out.

Page Bryant is no stranger to non-fiction, but this, her maiden work of fiction, is surprisingly as adept as the magicians and priestesses about whom she's written. The characters are vividly portrayed and come together in a well-woven plot whose outcome is only vaguely anticipated until the very end of the book. The subject matter will appeal to those fascinated by ancient Egypt, metaphysics, or archeoastronomy, while the story line and pacing make suitable reading for people who just enjoy a good novel. As I suspect the author intended, the book will likely provoke further interest in magic, Egypt and astronomy. I can easily see this book made into a hit movie and I'm sure you'll not be disappointed in this one!

Stellar! This first novel by a respected metaphysical teacher weaves her vast spiritual knowledge with her fertile imagination and her acute insight. Not only is the story spellbinding, but the teachings contained within the text make this book unique in its genre. I have read everything -- both historical and fictional -- I could find about ancient Egypt over the past couple of decades and have not found another book that places me in the spiritual consciousness of the gods and mortals of ancient Egypt more vividly than this book.

What an enjoyable read!

Through almost 500 pages, the author skillfully interweaves the stories of 5 groups of characters from 4th-Dynasty Egypt: Pharaoh and his family, his advisors to the throne, several powerful magician-priests and priestesses, Pharaoh's half-brother - himself a powerful magician-priest, and 2 young apprentice priestesses. The lives of these characters become enmeshed as ancient prophecies begin to play out during a pivotal period just prior to the return of the star gods to ancient Egypt.

Second Coming of the Star Gods will hold the attention of many different kinds of readers. For some, it will be a rousing, Egyptian-themed sci/fi adventure book in the traditions of Zelazny or Leiber, where the "gods" commune with humans, imparting advanced knowledge. Others will look at it as historical fiction - a magical version of Mary Stewart or Taylor Caldwell or even Joan Grant, where daily life in Ancient Egypt really comes alive. Those who enjoy political intrigue will find the sibling rivalry that turns Pharaoh's half-brother into a usurper to the throne reminiscent of the power struggles of Cain and Able or Joseph and his brothers. For readers who are more metaphysically inclined, this book is full of the ethical dilemmas of black vs. white magic, and serious information about how to work shamanically with various types of star energies.

I understand that this is Page Bryant's first work of fiction. If this is any indication of her storytelling abilities, I hope it's not her last!
