A must have for academics all over the world

Thoughtful analysis of problems with adult learning.
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 1998-08-22
The authors offer an insightful examination of some problems with structuring learning experiences for adults and associated difficulties with learning from research. Their discussion of disciplinarity --- and how it constructs or limits what is perceived as appropriate in various educational practices --- is quite interesting (it seems to me that since those doing the teaching are also "victims" of disciplinarity, it is inevitable that this cycle will be self-perpetuating). The discussion of reintroducing the self (personal experience) into the technical trajectory of research is also worthy of further consideration --- the authors note that many factors affecting the researcher [and thus the research "product" (e.g., tolerance for ambiguity)] are acknowledged privately as important, but not documented or really confronted when the research is reported or critiqued. I only wish the authors would bring their recommendations down a level in terms of methods for real-world application of these concepts in institutions where adults are attempting to learn.

This is a timely book. Many have lost sight of the importance of Baptism to "our" church and to the church as a whole. Dr Bryant has capably reminded us of the proper place of baptism in the event of conversion and in the life of the church.

It is a "must read" for all generations of Christians

Dr. Bryant's analysis of this topic is refreshing, admist a sea of various interpretations and controversies. His approach to the subject is very much like his teaching style: gentle, yet direct and relevant. His work is worth reading, not only for its new look on an old subject, but also because of its personal application. This is a book not only for theologians, but for those who have a hunger to understand more clearly the doctrine of baptism.

TIME TO PLAN A ROAD TRIP

I read this book with interest....I like to ride, and who doesn't like to drink beer? This book is nicely written and an easy read. I've riden many of the trails in Michigan, and some in the surrounding states, plus I've eaten in some of the brew pubs also, so, as I review this, I believe I am qualified to give FIVE STARS *****. Mercer hits the "nail on the head" with his description of the rides, and the food/beer appears to be on track also....but I think I have a passion for a pale ale rather than a porter. I've started traveling more for work, I'll pack my bike and this book......every work trip will become a road trip. Buy it!!!!

A buffet guide that makes the beginner appear an expert

Review Date: 1999-01-01
Although a novice at food preparation, I enjoy cooking for others, preferably in large quanities. At this writing, I have prepared and served two of the buffet menus in this book. Both were a joy to prepare. The clear/concise instructions allow for advance preparation of the menus, with time to actually enjoy the crowd that is being served. Each menu item compliments the next and other similar fare may be matched from different menu plans. I found the book to be a great addition to my collection. This book includes great ideas for food presentation and set-up, from inexpensive to lavish. I would recommend this book for the beginner to intermediate chef. After two successful buffets, I am already planning my third.

Better without the Photos...

I heard about this book when Carole guest-chef'd on the Martha Stewart TV show. I liked her style and recognized her passion for food, its presentation, and the whole dining experience. So I ordered her book. It's full of great recipes, although I had hoped for a few more make-ahead recipes. As a caterer who works without help, and as someone who wants to enjoy my own parties when I entertain, I'm always looking for well-prepared make-ahead recipes. But overall it's a wonderful cookbook, arranged seasonally and by the occasion, which I love. However, the photographs are horrible. I've never seen a cookbook of this quality with such horrible photographs. Where was the food stylist? Where was the lighting? Many of the photos are overexposed, and most are too busy. I think most of us who love food and cooking also love looking at photos - but we need to be able to tell what the heck it is! I hope Carole makes enough money on this cookbook that she can hire a real food photographer for her next book.

The Attributes of God
Helpful Votes: 20 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-11
This book is based on the sermons of A.W. Tozer, a man who served as a pastor for 44 years without benefit of any college or seminary training. Tozer discusses 10 of God's attributes, from his mercy and grace to his immensity and holiness. In the back of the book, David Fessenden adds a study guide which can be used by an individual or by a group. Tozer contends that our faith can only be as big as our God and he feels that we have "watered down" our Lord and as a result, we have also reduced out faith. In each chapter Tozer tells the reader about one of God's characteristics, then defines it and discusses how this attribute effects the life of the believer. In the process he answers questions such as "Why Are We Not Happy?" and shows us that God is perfect and infinite in every way. God's Lordship derives not from what He does but in who He is, and Tozer does a good job of helping us understand that better.

Meaningful human topics and all heart and feeling...

My sister in-law bought this book and I have commandeered it. EVEN IF YOU HATE POETRY, you will love this book. The themes are so universal and it is full of relevant artwork and illustrations. While McGill's work is the primary focus of the text it is surrounded with some amazingly diverse texts that entertain various viewpoints of our existence. One thing that impressed me most is there is no apparent bias. Secular, Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, or Humanist, the author really has his bases covered with no apparent axe to grind or opinions to try to enforce. It is a very open-minded and refreshing presentation. Since the book has so many wonderful accompanying texts in it, one could hardly grow tired of the book or not learn something. McGill's works themselves are nothing short of brilliant. I did not care for some of his poems from his youth he included at all, nor was I much impressed by some of his more abstract poems that seemed to hover on themes of technology and science. That being said, some of his more classically styled poems just wash over your senses with a real passion you can feel in your soul. You can tell that this poet really is a deep thinker and has a passion for life. I could feel in a number of his works a real desire to reach out and empathize and feel and understand and love. Many of his poems just slide off of your tongue and you can tell that he has real mastery over his verse the way he moves actual meaningful human topics effortlessly through a demanding repertoire of allegories, metaphors, and carefully executed phonetic dances. No matter what reviews you find here, one thing is certain; McGill's work may not be consistently wonderful, but when he gets it right it is obvious that he is not only a skilled and practiced wordsmith, he is all heart and feeling, is not afraid to share himself, and some of his poetry is simply beautiful.

I am not a poetry expert, but I enjoy reading contemporary poetry and I really enjoyed existence. McGill's work, while at times a bit stuffy and even preachy is also at times profound and really left me thinking. Some of his poetry especially the shorter ones, hit me with feeling like I had just realized something I had always known, but never really thought about. One of his poems, 'You Will Live them One More Time,' brought me to tears when I started thinking about my own young children. This book made me think about my life and what it all means.

Carole has problems of her own: she is trying to befriend a girl her age, Marie Dana, who is recovering from an accident. Carole believes that riding will be therapeutic for her, but can she convince Marie? A lively read and light on the preachiness that sometimes mars the other series books.

Compelling Saga of Survival

Review Date: 2004-06-09
I couldn't have finished reading Hour of Redemption at a better time than on Memorial Day and just following the dedication of the WWII Memorial. This book is an amazing story of courage and survival.

When given this book, I was led to believe it focused on the WWII Bataan Death March. To my surprise, the author's scope was much wider and the events during the march were an important yet minor portion of this book. Author, Forrest Johnson, begins in April 1942 with the US Pacific Forces fully engaged and making great efforts to push back the Japanese advances. He uses the early part of the book to discuss the battle and eventual surrender at Bataan. His description of the infamous forced-march from Bataan is savage. I was struck by the reference to the approximated 72,000 Filipinos and Americans who began the match, only 52,000 arrived at the concentration camp.

Those who survived the brutal march were confined in a concentration camp and faced staggering death rates during the initial weeks. Slowly and through the help of local medical units, they were able to survive the disease and unsanitary conditions. Eventually, the death rate subsided and Johnson describes how the POWs began to organize within the camp structure. He describes how they risked sure death by smuggling contraband items and by building radios.

One of the more interesting portions of the book detailed the establishment of the first US Special Forces unit, The Rangers. They are the genesis of today's US Army Rangers; and along with the Alamo Scouts play a pivotal role in the march to free the POWs. (To read more about the Alamo Scouts, pick up Silent Warriors of World War II: The Alamo Scouts Behind the Japanese Lines by Lance Q. Zedric) Johnson uses the last half of the book to describe the planning and daring liberation of the POWs still held captive nearly three years following the Bataan Death March. The vivid details provide a reader with the tactical picture of the men who dared to rescue their comrades. His description of the rescue is a truly remarkable accounting of their triumphant efforts.

My only real criticism of this book is the lack of references. It is easy to see that Johnson devoted a great deal of time in researching the events and he honorably tells the story. He mentions in the author's notes section that there was little written about these events and that more than 500 people were interviewed to be able to write this story. The decision not to cite his references is unfortunate. He does include a general bibliography and a short glossary to enhance this book. Also included are various rosters noting the officers and men who served in the effort.

It is impossible to understand or even imagine the inhumanity that occurred during this part of the war. Only the people who experienced it truly know the hellish details. Forrest Johnson has done a masterful job of telling this saga.

I recommend this book.

The best WW II book I have read
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-05
HOUR OF REDEMPTION is quite simply the best WW II book I have read. I finished 10 WW II books during 2003 and finished the year part way through three others. HOUR OF REDEMPTION was unquestionably the absolute best. It will make you proud, make you cheer, enrage you, and, most importantly, captivate you. I was enthralled throughout.

The book tells the story of the rescue of POWs in Cabanatuan in the Philippines. U.S. forces had landed in the Philippines and were in the process of taking the islands back from the Japanese. Many of the POWs at Cabanatuan were survivors of the Death March and, based on the prior conduct of the Japanese, would be executed before U.S. regular forces could reach the camp. To avoid the murders of these survivors, a plan was developed to go approximately 25 miles behind enemy lines and rescue these men. The raid was led by U.S. Rangers who were formerly the 98th Field Artillery (Pack), as well as by Alamo Scouts and Filipino guerillas. In one of the most perfectly executed military operations ever, these incredibly courageous men rescued more than 500 POWs without even so much as one POW being killed by the Japanese during the raid (one POW died of a heart attack and I believe one died of an illness). The rescue team killed approximately 1,200 Japanese soldiers while sustaining only 2 or 3 losses themselves.

I would suggest this book not only to WW II buffs but to anyone. It is an amazing story of courage and fortitude that will leave you thirsting for more. You will not be disappointed with this book ... save for the sleep you lose when you cannot put it down.
