This is my favorite Saddle Club book ever! Stevie Lake, Lisa Atwood, and Carole Hanson are just plain broke! And they die after going to a horse store. Stevie, well knowingly got carried away and blabbed around with a horse-sitting business. And WAY too carried away! Veronica also pitched in blabbing around with 6 polo ponies to get watched. Wait until you see how they manage! :) I love this book! I definatly recomend it!

Pretty good, but definetly not Bonnie's best......

I guess it was pretty good, but it was kind of a mixture of a couple of the earlier books. It was fun how they wanted this stuff and how Veronica bought the bridle that Stevie wanted. But it was kind of monotonous. They were endlessly working and so on, great, but not awesome. This was a pretty good, and funny book, but definetly NOT Bonnie Brayant's best.

This is the first Saddle Club Book I have read and it is still one of my favorites and I own over 40 of the books. After reading this book I went out to get more and it basically got me into this series and now I am hooked! This book is full of crazy plans and crazy buisness deals and there is also a little bit of pay back to Veronica!

Lisa,Stevie and Carole are broke! Then Stevie comes up with one of her wild schemes.Carole and Lisa end up helping Stevie and the three become 'Horsesitters'. The part we enjoyed most was when Honeybee, the great Palomino, went missing and Lisa and Deborah tried to make an excuse for Aunt Eugenia and her old fogey friends. Then as suddenly as she disappears,Honeybee turns up again. The other part we enjoyed was : Stevie watched, dumbfounded,as Veronica pulled out a credit card and paid."I can't believe it,"she whispered to her friends."She's buying MY bridle! It's just not fair." "She's just doing it to make you mad,"Carole whispered soothingly. "Well,it's working,"Stevie snapped. She glowered at Veronica, but the other girl didn't even glance at The Saddle Club as she took the bag from the clerk and sauntered out of the store. "What a jerk,"Lisa said when Veronica had gone.

I found Chief Bryant's memoir to be a very moving, and personal account of the life of the riverine sailor in Vietnam. The reader feels a part of the action because this is not a story written by an Admiral, General, or historian, but rather by one man who was part of a boat crew who was just trying to stay alive.Highly recommended for readers interested in riverine warfare or the Vietnam War. Also recommended is "Coast Guard Action in Vietnam" by Paul Scotti.

Koen Review; Volume 5,Issue 12;August 15, 1998 Man of the River, SMC Jimmy R. Bryant, USN Man of the River is a highly personal account of a man's Naval experiences in Vietnam's rivers from 1968 to 1969. In his dedication Bryant made sure to stress that this is not an individual's war story but one of a team. He shows his pride and respect for his fellow "men of the sea" in Task Force 116, River division 591. It is to these brave men whom he dedicates this book. While on active duty he is credited with 38 accounts of enemy contact with his fellow patrolmen. The role of the Navy in Vietnam's waterways was to patrol the rivers in high-speed small boats using hit-and-run tactics to disrupt the flow of enemy troops and supplies. The threat of combat was always with them, and Bryant soon realized that fear was not an option if he were to keep his men alive. His whole task force knew that one false move could be death for them all, and Bryant with great pride tells of how each member kept a cool head throughout with their own bravery and the grace of God. Bryant's straightforward and detailed account was not written for personal glory but from thankfulness for surviving to be able to tell his story in respect and remembrance of all those who fought honorably for the American ideal.

Mister Roberts had the right amount of amusement and sadness, which is the main reason I really liked it. At first I was not sure how I was going to enjoy it. The first chapter started out fairly slow, but this was just because it was an introduction of characters. The rest of the book was much clearer with this introduction. Throughout the entire novel there was a lot of humor. It was a fast read with all this comedy. I really admire Heggen's writing style because he incorporated wit with war. Heggen gave a more amusing account of the war than other factual book could have.

After recently watching Mister Roberts again on DVD, I was checking the credits and decided to finally track down this book. It turns out it was just the screenplay (with a list of props and scene designs included to help stage the play). While I was at first surprised, I was not disappointed. This makes an excellent addition to my film library. A great screenplay of a great film. Got any fulminate of mercury?

This is a fabulous story. Heggen expertly captures the monotony, the cynicism, the bravado and depression of life at sea. The story ranges from hilarious to heartbreaking, and it's sad Heggen ended his own life before writing again. I find it amazing that this book is not on the CNO's professional reading list.

What a tirrific surprise to be invited to come back to Kate's dude ranch, The Bar None!! Only this time they will do more than just hang out, their going on a pack trip with three riders that they don't know. When all was said and done it was time to head for the trail. Moutain trail that is. The bar none's horses(that they had last time) are there and their old friend, Eli, is their wrangler! What can go wrong! But wait maybe something can go wrong. Carol and Stevie have to find a way to save Lisa from her new "friends" fast, but how? While trying to figure this problem out another one quickly pops up. How are they going to make it? how can they get rid of the pesky twosome? and how are they going to get Lisa back? I found it so exciting that I couldn't put it down!! I LOVE THIS BOOK! I've always wanted to write and ride. Bonnie Bryant's books are completely inspirational and I don't even read that much. I pick this up and well let's just say that the overwhelming pile of Saddle Club books, doesn't look like enough any more. I learn quite a bit, have a really great story to read, and I never get bored! These books are great! So, ON YOUR MARKS! GET SET! BUY AND READ!!

The Saddle Club is going on a five day trip with Eli, Jeanne, Kate, Christene, and some others. Amy, one of them, is reckless and dangerous, and her older brother Seth is going down with her. And her "broken ankle" puts them all, the horses, and herself in danger when a deadly forst fire chases them down. A night of a wild trail ride puts them out of danger and a full day ahead of plans. They spend their fourth day enjoying themselves.

This was a pretty good book. I did find it a little far fetched, though. I don't think that jumping in Western was very realistic even if you were caught in a raging forest fire. Also,I found one of their companions portrayed as a little too snobby. I think this book was definently worth reading.

The book I read was very good because it teaches you about horses, and how to take care of them. It's an age appropriate book, and I think other 12 yr. olds interested in horses would enjoy it. The characters in the book are on a pack trip in the mountians. This book also has a moral, which is never try to do a book report, and be in the wilderness at the same time.

The Saddle Club, Stevie, Lisa and Carole are invited on a five night wilderness ride with Kate, Eli, Jeannie, and three others, John. Amy, and her brother Seth. From the beginning of the trail ride, everyone except Lisa can see Amy is dangerous. She gallops a horse down a hill, nearly injuring him, dives into an unfamiliar lake, and more, including almost getting Stevie, Lisa, Seth and herself lost with a "broken ankle". Lisa, however, is convinced that Amy's problem is her parents. Every time Amy does something, Seth comes running, with Lisa on his heels, convinced that she's the one who can make Amy's world right for her. It takes nearly getting killed by a forest fire to put Lisa's mind straight. A night filled with smoke and danger leads Lisa to see how foolish she was acting. A must read. Buy it, and I can guarentee you will love it.

It's sad to think that Chretien de Troyes introduced his most enduring invention in a work he did not live to finish. We never learn what, precisely, the Grail is--though Chretien never actually names it "Holy"--or where it came from. Almost like the Fisher King or the Grail itself, the Grail's inventor gave us a symbol and disappeared.

Perceval is the last of Chretien's five surviving romances. The Grail and the poem's naive central character proved enormously popular in medieval Europe, spawning several continuations of the unfinished story (all summarized at the end of this edition) and many imitators, from Wolfram von Eschenbach to Richard Wagner.

The story is both easy and difficult to summarize--easy because, being unfinished, it is short and fairly straighforward, and difficult because, for the same reasons, it has no ending and the reader has no way of knowing how the plot would finally interconnect and resolve. The title character begins the poem as a young man, living in the forest with his overprotective mother who, for fear of his life, has shielded him from knowledge of chivalry and even his own name. Nevertheless, Perceval shows knightly instinct and when he encounters a group of knights by chance, he determines to travel to King Arthur and become a knight.

This he does in short order, though not after a series of Quixotic adventures caused by his literal interpretation of his mother's bits of parting advice. Upon reaching Arthur's court, the acerbic Sir Kay tells Perceval that Arthur has knighted him and that the red armor of a rebellious knight is his to take. Perceval misses the joke and kills the red knight, then sets off on another series of adventures, vowing not to return to court until he has avenged Sir Kay's slapping of a girl.

The first third or so of Perceval deals exclusively with Perceval's misadventures and growth in courtesy and manliness. He fights overbearing knights and rights wrongdoings--all the trappings of the finest medieval romances. But near the middle of the tale, Sir Gawain suddenly comes to the fore in a subplot that is given as much time as the Perceval-centered plots. Indeed, almost the entire final third of the poem deals with Gawain. Chretien died before he could bring Perceval back into the story from a shadowy hermit's retreat.

But despite the lack of an ending--one can pick up von Eschenbach's Parzival for a much longer and fuller telling of the tale--Perceval remains a great read. The story is by turns touching and hilarious. Perceval's hopelessly naive exploits as a young man carefully segue to his realization, as a more mature man, that he has forgotten God and not only caused suffering for some, but prolonged it. The Gawain plot parallels Perceval's in many ways, and can be seen as the end result of the older knight's youthful adventures.

This translation by Burton Raffel is very good. While, as a non-French-speaker, I cannot speak for his accuracy or literalness, Raffel very deftly captures all the wit and energy of Chretien's narrative without succumbing to contemporary slang or cliche. A brief translator's note at the beginning summarizes Raffel's motivation and goals as translator, and the afterword by Joseph Duggan is a valuable and enjoyable read.

In the end, reading Perceval may be a disappointing experience for some--the absence of an ending, I have to admit, is frustrating--but for me, reading a master poet's story in a masterful translation is always a joy.

Highly recommended.

One of the most influential books of all time

This unfinnished romance has inspired centuries of literature. Chretien was probably the most popular writer in the 12th century. Despite the age of the book the story is full of issues that concern us today. It is a comming of age story in which a boy becomes a man and learns of his ancestry and potential. It is also a story of spiritual discovery, and the encounter with mystery. The fact that the poem was left unfinnished makes it even more compelling. Chretien claimed that this book was rewritten from a source book given to him by Phillip of Flanders, his patron. Speculation about the nature of this source has run on for centuries. A recent analysis in _King_Arthur_ by Norma Goodrich, makes a good case that the source was real and that these Arthurian stories took place in southern Scotland. So maybe Percival is more than just one of the greatest works of fiction. I love to read direct translations of Celtic mythology, and this is amoung the best available. Easier to read than you might think, but still a challenge. One of my favorite books.

French take on the Arthurian Legend

Review Date: 2007-01-11
Written by Chretien de Troyes in around 1180 under the patronage of Philip of Flanders, this medieval poem can be considered as the French take on the Arthurian legend. (Remember this was a time when England was ruled by French kings, so I suppose there was a lot of cultural exchange between the two countries). It's a very peculiar work, in that it is very funny, as Perceval, the protagonist of the story, is portrayed as an almost impossible fool who through his candor achieves success as a knight. Merlin doesn't appear here, but King Arthur does (as an aging and ineffective monarch), as well as Gawain and the Fisher King (with a very intriguing subplot dealing with the Holy Grail, reportedly the first mention ever in print of this mythical cup). Summing up, this is highly reccomended (and it's highly readable). Note: French filmmaker Eric Rohmer made in 1978 a very good adaptation of the poem called Perceval le Gallois.

I thought this book would be hard to read and boring since it was written so long ago, but I was wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it a fascinating story with undertones of all sorts of things. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the real story of the Grail Legend. Read this book instead of relying on other author's interpretations and theories.

What a Classic tale of the Fool coming to age! The story (read: poem) moves along at a quick pace as we follow Perceval through his travails. The story is light and humourous but also is so much deeper at second look. It is too bad Chretin dy Troyes could not have lived to finish this piece.

Phantom Warrior - Unbeliable Story

Review Date: 2008-11-09
I give this a 5 for the unbelivable story of courage and a 3 for rather mediocre writing. So this is a four star book for me. Pvt. McKinney was the right person in the right place at the right time and reacted in ther perfect way. The army just doesn't hand out MoHs lightly so you can be fairly sure that this action took place as reported. But it may be the single most amazing individual combat in the Pacific in WWII. It just does not seem possible that one man woken out of a sound sleep by being hit in the helmet with a saber managed to regain his senses and fight off a 150 Japanese soldiers determined to overrun the small outpost. His skills as a soldier and a marksman, his courage against all odds make this a unbelievable story of coolness underfire.

It is almost impossible to believe that after 30 minutes of overwhelming odds that Pvt. McKinney survived with barly a scratch and yet maybe 140 Japanese are dead. Survival in combat requires a cool head and steady nerves, Pvt. McKinney had those in abundence and certainly deserved the Medal of Honor. His life both before and after WWII was uncommon in many ways but when called upon to serve his country he did so instinctly and without hesitation, the kind of soldier that has fought for America whenever called upon. Then all he wanted was to go back to his life and ignore the burden that the MoH placed on him the rest of his life.

Well researched and written book. Got to know JR McKinney rather well and understood his character and attitude. A rather common, uncommon man. It is hard to believe he came out without a wound in his one man stand. Yet I do accept it did happen as written. I was also amazed how much training and how long it took his unit to become engaged in combat. I would have liked to read a little more about the early occupation of Japan. He was indeed the "Phantom Warrior."

Forrest Johnson tells the story of an American who rose to the occasion when faced with overwhelming enemy forces. But his book is more than a biography. Besides J.R. McKinney's incredible story, Johnson explains the World War II campaign in the Philipine Islands in a detailed and informative manner. The book gave me a much better understanding of the operational and political realities that affected the War in the Pacific. In this and his other books, Johnson demonstrates an ability of explaining dynamic and complex history from the perspective of individual soldiers thousands of miles from home, in a very unfamiliar and alien locations. I look forward to more from this author. Very nicely done, Mr. Johnson.

On May 11, 1945, at a remote outpost in the Phillipine Islands, approximately 100 Japanese infantrymen attacked a machine gun position. At the time Pvt. John McKinney was comfortably resting. One of the soldiers in the first wave of attackers struck Pvt. McKinney on the head with a saber. The glancing blow served only to awaken McKinney. As McKinney fought off his assailant, his two comrades manning the machinegun left (one soldier dragging off the other who had been wounded).

Left alone, McKinney took on the company of Japanese soldiers in a battle of wills, courage, and heroics that almost defies description, including jumping into the machinegun emplacement to recapture the position (and gun), shooting over half a dozen Japanese at pointblank range, and killing several more with the butt of his rifle.

What ensued next, a running battle by McKinney with the remainder of the squadron of Japanese attackers -- who tried to root him out or kill him with repeated assaults by rifle, machine gun, grenades, mortars, and hand to hand combat -- until he was relieved is almost too amazing to believe.

Indeed, McKinney is thought to have killed over 100 Japanese in less than an hour but, because his story was just too incredible, the actual kills were reduced and his Medal of Honor citation only credits him with killing 40 Japanese soldiers singlehandedly in repulsing this attack.

This book tells the life story of this amazing man. It is excellent reading for anyone interested in World War II, especially the battles in the Pacific.

This book was really good! The three girls stevie Carole and Lisa are near the end of their oregon trail ride and stevies competitive side is showing. She makes a bet with a boy who says he can outdo any girl! They bet that each one of them has to enter all five events in a rodeo and whoever loses has to do something terrible made up by the person that wins. Meanwhile Lisa and Carole get to be rodeo clowns! Though they are really worried about Stevie , they know she doesnt know the first thing about goat wrestling or cow roping. Stevie is also really worried about her boyfriend Phil who is on a rafting trip, she is sure that he has fallen in love with some one new! This book was really exciting , the ending was really good!

But yeah, I liked because I learned some about western riding events, like barrel racing( i knew about it) but the Cow penning and the goat thing), and it was cool when Stevie saved Caroles life!

Teach Yourself Acid 3.0 is an excellent resource. Although Acid comes with a manual on PDF, everybody knows that switching between your software and Adobe Acrobat Reader is tedious and a strain on the eyes--which in turn means that you probably won't learn all about Acid's possibilities. With TYA 3.0, you can have the book open while you work with Acid (this alone vastly improves your learning curve); additionally, every chapter (or "hour") of this text has exercises and activities that you can do with the supplied CD-Rom loops. I really recommend doing the exercises--they WILL give you ideas for your own Acid projects.

While it might initially seem a little pricey, the tips, exercises, and CD-Rom make it invaluable.

WONDERFUL WITH ONLY A TOUCH OF "TROUBLE"

This book is terrific! I just recently started experimenting with computer music using the ACID 3 programs, and this book makes an already easy to learn program even easier to understand. It is clearly written with the beginner in mind yet will take you as far up the technical ACID 3.0 learning curve as you wish. There is only one change I would make in the contents of Sam's Teach Yourself ACID 3.0 in 24 Hours, and that would be the inclusion of a comprehensive TROUBLESHOOTING section. The book is carefully written in a fashion, that if you follow the instructions to the letter, you should experience no technical problems. But as most will not have the infallibility to successfully follow the instructions without at least a few mistakes, I would wish there be a simple and quick to reference TROUBLESHOOTING section that helps you to easily go back and correct what you may have missed. But with this aside, the book is terrific. Definitely written for actual human beings. Well done.

Essential to fully understanding the "intuitive" interface!

As a Sonar user, a Sound Forge user, a Vegas Video user, I was completely amazed to discover the power hidden within Acid--whose very name unfortunately causes scornful and undeserved ridicule as with the review below.

Many see Acid as a toy, and it is anything but as anyone who digs beneath the surface will quickly discover.

Acid 3.0 is a professional tool used in professional environments to achieve professional results faster than ever before and where time is money, Acid shines.

For anyone wanting to push this tool past it's apparent limits, using it as the ultimate tool with which to bring together tracks from various sources (including Cubase) this book is essential to understanding its hidden strengths, and workarounds for inherent weaknesses found in some extreme BPM and pitch-shifting tasks. "Acid 3.0 in 24 Hours" is essential to understanding track management, bus usage, FX options, video scoring, and timing adjustments to name but a few.

Do not be fooled. Acid is a most powerful non-destructive digital audio construction tool, although its name may draw prejudice. This book is as worthy a companion and reference as exists for it.

Buy this book. Even the Acid experienced will learn from it.

This is a carefully-written explanation of a complex piece of computer technology. It takes way more hours than the title promises. But it is a wonderful introduction to the fascinating world of audio recording technology. Super Dooper!

When I determined that my daughter has been crazy about Strawberry Shortcake, then we knew that this was the way to go rather than buy separate small booklets. In fact, if you don't have any of the small booklets, then this book is a must. It's a great savings. It's beautifully illustrated on thicker paper.

Great Buy

This collection is a must for any Strawberry Shortcake fan. It is really hard to find a variety of Strawberry Shortcake books in England, so I was thrilled to see that this book included quite a few stories. My 3 year old twin girls make me read these stories over and over again and they are all good. We also love "Strawberry Shortcake Goes To School".

There's no white on the pages.

This is the most colorful children's book I've ever seen, and yet it isn't overly busy with color. Each two-page spread has a single picture with a colorful border around it. The text is written into the negative space on the picture itself.

Although the book is for our 5-year-old daughter, our son, 6, spent about an hour looking at the pictures and said, "I wish I knew how to read well enough to read all of this." I replied that I could read it to him, to which he said, "Yeah, but I want to read it over and over right now!"

The stories are as good as any Strawberry Shortcake DVD's, with good moral lessons about friendship, patience, honesty, etc...

And what a great price!

It's great

This is 6 stories in one and I'm pleased with the "moral of the story" of each of them. It's a nice size and colorful, etc. My 2 year old daughter loves it and will even more once she understands all the words.

Six best-loved Strawberry shortcake books in one!!!

Kate set the alarm clock. "We'll leave before dawn," she said, pulling on a jacket and boots. "I'm going to go call Dad."

"We shouldn't ride bareback," Carole suggested after Kate left.

That made sense. This wasn't a pleasure ride. This was serious business. The lives of many horses could be on the line.

A minute later Kate reappeared. Her face looked grim.

"What's the matter?" asked Stevie.

"The phone's dead. The storm must have knocked it out," Kate answered. "It looks like we're on our own."
