Carole and Stevie have met a boy that just started riding at Pine Hollow and he knows as much about horses as Carole, but that doesn't mean he has everything, does it? (You learn a lot of interesting horse facts!) I hope I didn't sound too critical or give too much a way- I really love the Saddle Club! I have like 70-something of Ms. Bryant books!

Stories for Children Magazine 5 Star ReviewReview Date: 2008-10-05
This book is about the Ethiopian famine of the 1980s. Jane Kurtz grew up in a remote village in the southwest corner of Ethiopia, although her biography does not say whether her family's being there was as missionaries, diplomats, military, charitable, Peace Corps, or what. Until 1974, people of various ethnic and religious groups, including Orthodox, Jewish, Muslims, and native religions, generally co-existed in a somewhat uneasy peace in the East African nation of Ethiopia, which basically was favorable toward the West, although prejudice and persecution did exist, especially toward the Jews (known as Beta Israel).
However, in 1974, the last of a long line of "Christian" Ethiopian emperors, Haile Selassie, was dethroned. The military committee which removed him promised better things, but by 1977 the government had turned away from the West and begun cooperating with the Soviet Union, and, as in most places where communism has been tried, things went from bad to worse. The problems were compounded during the 1980s by a war resulting from the revolt of Eritrea, a northeastern province seeking independence supported by neighboring Somalia and Sudan, and a great draught throughout the whole region. Persecution against the Jews increased. I remember reading and seeing news reports of that time period about massive air lifts by the Israeli government of Jews from Ethiopia to Israel.
This book of children's fiction, drawn from true stories told by Beta Israel who emigrated to Jerusalem, tells about two girls, one a blind Beta Israel named Rahel and the other, Sahay, from the Christian Kemata ethnic group, who are fleeing to a refuge camp in Sudan. Becoming separated from their relatives, they must overcome the prejudices that each group has against the other and learn to help one another. While the author does not shrink from describing the horrors of their condition and the terrors of their journey, there is nothing in this book that is inappropriate for children. One thing that helps give them courage are the Old Testament stories that Rahel's grandmother has told her using the beads that she had given her. The book reinforces several positive lessons, such as learning forebearance with others, what it means to be a friend, and keeping hope alive in one's heart. Kurtz has written several factual books about Ethiopia, but this is her first novel.
Fear and HopeReview Date: 2008-05-18
In brief, it is about two girls. One is from the Qement tribe and the other from Beta-Israel (or negatively called a Falasha). Their journey of distress sees them move from being focussed on their differences to appreciating what they have in common both now and historically. They also realise how they can care for one another while fleeing the brutal men taking over their country. There are also the typical interactions between young children who are not quite sure what to think about a type of person they are unfamiliar with.
The ending leaves one filled with both wonder and hope.

(RAW Rating: 4.5) - The power of sensualityReview Date: 2007-11-22
After her laughable attempt at securing a donor, Pia's assistant enrolls her in the seminar: Weapons of Mass Seduction. And so begins the journey for both Pia and the reader, as the story delves deeply into the lives of Pia and two other woman whose sensual selves have been denied for far too long.
This novel is an entertaining read with its sassy humor and headstrong heroine. As the reader learns, sensuality has very little to do with sex, so although Pia has proven that she can be an elegant femme fatale, even she needs to brush up on her sensual skills. The beauty in this story is its exploration of Pia's insecurities as she stumbles in love and then allows fear and doubt to undermine her efforts. Although WEAPONS OF MASS SEDUCTION initially has a light edge to it, it eventually delves into deeper issues, honest and painful examining, as Pia struggles through events that would devastate even the strongest shero.
Here, Lori Woolridge-Bryant successful creates a unique an intriguing story about the delight of femininity and the power of sensuality. This novel promises, and certainly succeeds, in unleashing the sensual self of its readers while thoroughly entertaining them in the process.

Weapon of ChoiceReview Date: 2007-10-05
Weapons of Mass Seduction is an informative, delightful novel by Lori Bryant-Woolridge. Woolridge expertly created a perfect mix of an engaging storyline and a sensuality manual rolled into one. Pia, Flo, and Becca all come from different backgrounds but all of them are longing to become enticing, sensual women. These characters represent what a lot of women are going through on a daily basis. Readers will find that the tips that these women learn through the workshop can be applied to their own lives. Woolridge even includes Weapons of Mass Seduction self tests in the back of the book to see how seductive you are. This story has a healthy dose of humor and emotionally intense scenes that will stick with you long after you finished the last page. Weapons of Mass Seduction is a fun read that should be enjoyed by all women.

Weapons of Mass Seduction- the reviewReview Date: 2007-09-25
I was excited about the topic of the book. I first flipped to the back and was intrigued by the quizzes to see if I was a WMS! I thought that the book was well written. There was a lull in the middle of the book where I struggled to keep my attention focused on reading, but towards the end, the pace picked up and the book finished well. I did find myself wanting to have more insight on Becca and Flo. It seemed as I read the back that I would know more about them, then I was only introduced to them at the WMS workshop and through glimpses afterwards in the storyline. I think the author missed out on an opportunity to really explode with making Becca and Flo have more of their own storyline.
I would recommend this book for your reading pleasure! And make sure to take the test to find out if you are a WMS!

We are allowed to see how these women put their skills to the test once they get home. The problem is the book lacks luster and pizazz once they arrive home. The storyline drags and you find yourself going from warm to cold very quickly. I absolutely enjoyed the idea of the book however it seems trying to continue the story after the seminar was a challenge for the author. None the less I belive it is worth the read. Plus this is one of my favorite authors.

But if you're someone who regularly follow the Lakers'exploits during the season, on the internet or otherwise, you're not getting any wiser by reading this book. The author was just repeating articles form the LA Times, OCR and other sources. Reading passages in the book you get the feeling that you've already read that somewhere else.
This ain't a David Halberstram book.

Anyway, Stevie has become a school reporter and is profiling a "marriage" project the class is doing. She is going to focus on herself, her friend Callie, and Veronica diAngelo, who isn't happy with either her partner or Stevie interviewing her.

"Four Of The Finest Wines and how they mature in their own time..."Review Date: 2007-05-23
ALIZ'E is a product of divorced parents and she's playing the field, albeit discreetly for that mighty dollar, while striving to keep her own ends intact. CRISTAL lives with the insecurity derived from being an orphan, but she's working independently to live that designer labeled life with a major player in her eyesight. Don't hate the player, hate the game! DOM battles low self-esteem due to her dark complexion and her gutter mother that has no problem smoking weed with her child, as long as she keeps the funds flowing frequently. She's a druggie and a stripper with a child that she doesn't have the time or patience for. And then there was MOET...she lives the good life, in church, all prim and proper all while under the watchful eyes of her super-saved parents, keeping it on the down-low doing the Diggety with the good reverend while bowed down in prayer!!! Whatchu say!!! "Live and Learn" is spell-binding with the unfolding of all the drama in these four ladies lives.
Ms. Bryant has mos def credited herself in this urban genre with a style of story-telling that will have your begging for more and dreading the assured ending! Sistagirl has been in the game for a while and shows that she DOES indeed have staying power! Rising to the occasion of getting out of her comfort zone with a job very well done! If you're searching for a great read, "Oops, here it is!" Get ya read on!

My favourite S.C. book!Review Date: 2000-07-25
"Starlight Chrismas (in Germany it was "Ausritt imSchnee Sattelclub Band Nr. 14") " is really one of my favourite S.C. books. I read one month before christmas, and after twenty pages I couldn't expect the 24. of december anymore! No doubt the best part was when Ben, Stevie, Phil and Lisa made Veronica's horse "sick"... Or when Carole's father told her that Starlight belonged her... Or when Veronica's "friends" found out that they had brought their own horses outside... Or... -this book has so many highlights that I read it about 5 times whithout getting tired of it. My only problem with the original books from america is that so many characters have different names like in Germany- for ex. : Stevie Lake= Jenny Lake Carole Hanson = Laura Hanson Lisa Atwood = Julia Atwood Starlight = Silberstern and so on
And here all books come out 2 years later and are not in the same order like the originals. ( Only one serie ) Maybe I'll read a Saddle Club book sometime in English...

My VERY FAVORITE Saddle Club bookReview Date: 2005-05-12
First, Lisa remembers that when Amelia was little, she destroyed Lisa's favorite book and pulled her dog's tail. Then, when Amelia arrives at the Atwoods', she wants to go to a different restaurant than the one that they were planning on going to.
Then, the Pony Tails (some younger girls at the stable) ask Amelia to help them out and she won't. She gets Carole in trouble and actually starts being friends with Veronica, but not for long--she's so bratty she gets in a fight with even Veronica!
This is my favorite Saddle Club book and most likely my favorite book I've ever read. YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!! IT'S GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
