This book has a lot of valuable info. It was preaching to the crier a bit for me but still it is always good to have ones views validated. The recipes may be more local in California and New York where getting some of the ingredients is a lot easier, but not necessarily local. Use them as inspiration rather than dogma(which the author points out herself). Have fun experiment and create your own cooking play list(something I found to be a really fun aspect of the book).

If you're like me and just getting a clue that something's amiss in our food chain and only now realizing big business has dollars instead of nutrition in mind when creating new foods, then this book helps you explain why and how that happened. Plus, you can give family and friends ideas about what to do about it - and that's only in the first half of this concise and clear read. With the second half, you can create a great meal. Organized around the way many of us cook these days - for others and for a party - the recipes are a step up from your average fare but not so complex that they can't be delicious on the first try. I highly recommend its smarts and strong flavors!

Only one complaint

Review Date: 2008-02-19
First of all, I would like to say that I simply adore the recipes in this book. I do consider most of them to be "special occasion" food, since I can't always afford some of the ingredients, but it's good to have fancy food every now and then.

My only complaint with this book is that the authors seem to show contempt for anyone who follows a specific lifestyle or diet. As a dedicated vegan myself, I choose not to eat animal products as part of my effort to not support the meat industry or the suffering of other living things. So, when the authors gave examples of "vegans" sneaking cheese, or "vegetarians" sneaking seafood, that seems unfair. Obviously these "vegans" and "vegetarians" are not in fact what they say they are. That doesn't mean that every veg-head out there is a hypocrite who's to weak to "do without".

If the book didn't have that snide little comment, I'd give it 5 stars. But buy it for the recipes anyways!! Yum!

Very well written

This book is extremely well written, it was able to hold the attention of someone not in the field of nutrition/food systems (such as my husband who develops software) and captured me from the opening paragraph. I work in food systems and am very familiar with the issues Anna writes about. I appreciate all the research that went into writing this book, the detailed fact checking and the beautiful recipes developed to accompany it. I was educated, enlightened and exposed to new music artists all at the same time while reading this book--what more could I ask for?

Great recipes! Very Informative!

An excellent reference, but it is an embarassment of riches, and as such it can't completely cover every area exhaustively. This would probably be extremely frustrating for a casual reader to absorb. I used this as a text book for a class with an extremely good instructor who backed up the material in the book very well. As such, the class and the book were a joy.

What a splendid book! I wish I had gone to CMU and take this course. This book is written by CMU professors after teaching Computer Systems course for few years. This book covers broad spectrum of topics from Operating Systems, Compilers, Computer Architecture, Assembly Level Programming, Kernel internals, Linkers, etc from a programmer's perspective (as the title aptly says).

I am searching for words to describe the usefulness of this book. In my experience, I have had hard time learning some of the topics where Operating systems, Processor and Compilers intersect. For example, Linkers and Loaders, program disassembly using reverse-engineering, virtual memory in Kernel etc. After all the hard work, I found the right book which grinds all the famous books in different areas and gives the right juice for the real programmers to taste and digest.

Those famous books are:
[1] Computer Organization and Design Second Edition : The Hardware/Software Interface by David A. Patterson, John L. Hennessy
[2] UNIX Internals: The New Frontiers by Uresh Vahalia
[3] Linux Kernel Development by Robert Love
[4] Linkers and Loaders by John R. Levine
[5] GNU Binutils (GAS, objdump, ar, nm etc) Documentation

Excellent job. I really appreciate the work and content of this book.

Even though the topics of this book are absolutely great and crucial for any CS student, I dislike the entire book !, its hard to follow the writer, i find it hard to keep with him !
too many complicated information with either Tiny explaination or more complicated explaination ,
its a very big book with many topics , i prefer reading seperate books with specific topics rather than this book,

Nice Book!

I just completed a college course using this textbook... the course was tough, but the book was very good and useful. This is one textbook I won't be selling any time soon!

The practice problems provided in the book were usually very good, and the programming problems distributed with it were fun and educational, including topics like Buffer Overflows, Memory Optimizations, and Debugging with GDB, among others.

There are *some* problems with this book, but it doesn't suffer from the devastating flaws that plague most computer science textbooks. Some sections lack thorough explanations and examples, and the writting is a bit unclear at times. Some solutions to the practice problems are vague and don't really provide much insight on how to solve the problems. Luckily, these flaws only creep up in a few places.

Compared to most technical textbooks, however, this one really shines. It's not quite perfect, so I think 4 stars is appropriate.

In this book, Carole gets a boyfriend. This is annoying because they don't do anything besides kiss or make plans to kiss when Carole feels more comfortable. Talk about boring. Lisa is dealing with her break-up with Alex and wondering if she should date other people. Her dilemma is also dull. Callie is being stalked, which is interesting, but I wish the author would stop beating us over the head with what a nerd the stalker is. Okay, he's pudgy and wimpy. WE GET IT ALREADY.

I thought this was an ok book. It's a little weird with Carol and Cam though. At the beginning of the book they have just met again and at the end they are like an old married couple. The other Pine Hollow books were better but this one was ok.

Well, this was my first Pine Hollow book. I don't know why I chose to take the 13th book of the series, but it was okay. Bonnie Bryant was able to write the book with me understanding it. I was surprised at first how a handsome someone actually liked Lisa for a long time. I would've thought they were already together. Their character just sounded like they were made for each other. The Cam and Carole part was a little to mushy for me.

One of the best yet!

Cam is back and Carole's finally got a boyfriend (VERY ROMANTIC! :))--besides Starlight! The two realize how much they really love each other while Lisa and Alex decide to take a break from their semi-rocky relationship...plus Lisa has to deal with her wierdo mother always messing up her life. Stevie makes an embarrasing mistake but is a good sport about it and Callie isn't having any luck finding a new horse. The story is strong and it's really cool how Carole and Lisa kind of switch places--can't wait to see what happens in the next one!

This book is told mostly from Lisa's viewpoint. She is going to ride Samson in her first A-rated show, and she is understandably nervous. She further loses confidence when she discovers that some of the competitors are spoiled brats and her mother buys her an inappropriate show coat which causes gossip. Although I felt that the other riders at the show were caricatured, the author did a good job of capturing the show atmosphere. Lisa doesn't win, but in the eyes of her friends and those who know her, she is a winner.

Do you like horses? Do you like to use your imagination? Well, if you do, you might want to try reading Show Jumper, by Bonnie Bryant.
The story is about a thirteen year-old girl named Lisa and her two best friends, Carole and Stevie. They are all going to a big, prestigious horse show. Lisa makes a mistake that deteriorates her confidence. Her friends try to comfort her, but nothing seems to be working. Lisa has been working for months with her wonderful horse for this moment, but something happens that might let it all go down the drain.
I would recommend this book to anybody who likes horses. It is a very easy book for the reader to relate to. It is not that long, but Mrs. Bryant's descriptions make this novel "a movie on paper."

I am a huge fan of The Saddle Club... and I have to say that this book was one of the best! I loved all the excitement of the show... you could almost feel it. Veronica (My favorite!), Margie, and her friends really add alot of color to this book, and give it a real sense of competition! Overall this is a wonderful book! If you like horse shows... you will love this book!

First of all this book is awesome! If you haven't read this book you should because there is a ton of action and excitment! For those of you who are picking on Lisa I would like to say that Lisa wasn't acting stupid! She was nerviouse and wouldn't you be too if you were compeeting in that show? She was also mad and wouldn't you be mad if everyone was paying attention to your horse but not caring about you or think that you are a good rider? All the people did was think that Samson did everything and I think that lisa has a right to be Nerviouse and Mad!

This book is about Charlotte Ramsey, who is a new girl at Abigail Adams Junior High. Charlotte has a history of "first day at school" blunders and this one has got to be her worst. At lunchtime the tablecloth gets stuck in Charlotte's zipper causing trays and food to go flying all over the people at her table. Even though she has a difficult start in her new school, Charlotte eventually becomes friends with the least likely people.

This book deals with everything from everyday to unusual situations that a typical 7th grader might have to deal with. I like this book because it is realistic and funny, and because it gives practical advice for girls. The characters are so engaging that by the end of the book, you want to read more. Luckily for you, this is the first of the Beacon Street Girls series so there are more to read.

I would recommend this book for anyone from 5th Grade to High School or for anyone who is looking for some great advice on how to deal with sticky situations. It might also be used by life skills groups for discussion on topics such as dealing with divorcing parents, making new friends in a new school and the "big class field trip," It's also a really fun book for anyone who likes realistic fiction.

I am a mom of an avid reader, aged 9. I am always concerned that, because she can read well, she will choose books that may be challenging in length and context but may be too advanced for her socially and emotionally. I just finished this, book 1 of the series, and am happy to say that this looks like a series I can get behind 100%. The series revolves around the friendship and loyalty of a group of diverse middle school girls who create a club in an attic. In book 1, the author tackles the subjects that kids at this age deal with (diverse backgrounds and interests, snobs, crushes, learning diabilities - one girl has a laptop not because she's a rich snob but because she has a learning disability)in a language they understand...hip slang, cyberspeak, etc. The values of loyalty, honesty, civic duty and friendship are paramount in this story. Moms and Dads, fret not. Only positive messages found in this book. I look forward to my daughter reading these and getting hooked on a series based on strong girls and their friendship.

Everybody has a different opinion when writting a review if we all had the same reviews or opinions it would be boring. Reviews can sometimes down play a really good book or up play a really bad book its up to us to read the book and judge for ourselfs and draw our own conclusion thats the best thing about a review its like a silent debate....

I really enjoyed Gabielle and Max's rollercoaster to love. He was so gentle and Gabby was so innocent but knew what she wanted, and she wanted Max. But it was hard for him to get past the sweet little Gabby that he first saw. It's almost like forbidden love. It was hot and steamy and a really good romance book.

I loved this book! Again, Ms. Bryant tore it up!! Hot, hot hot..

Gabby was a razor-tongued, devoted, unaware-of-her beauty, assistant who secretly loved her talented, edgy, moody but kind-hearted boss, Maxwell Bennett for six years. Maxwell, loved her as well, but it took him forever to realize the good thing right in front of him....

So, in between battles with jealousy, a gold digger named Penelope, and Gabby quitting her job, Max's eyes are finally opened. I didn't want this book to end...I read it in a day and a half...what a love story!

Gabby and Maxwell are so real in this love story; they start out as friends and then become lovers. They go through their ups and downs, you have to read the book to find out for yourself what I mean! I loved reading every word though!! This is one book I may have to read again! I want to know more about Gabby and Maxwell...Maybe a sequel??

"It may be proper to observe that a good moral character is first essential in a man."

A man that says that doesn't cheat on his wife of many years, fornicate with a slave and produce an illegitamate child.

Lies about George Washington:
1) He had wooden teeth
2) He chopped down a cherry tree and never told a lie
3) He threw a silver dollar across the Potomac
4) He loved his best friend's wife (Sally Fairfax) while married to his wife
5) He was not a christian, possibly an athiest, at best a diest
6) He had a child with a slave

Avoid this book. I've read many books about this human and find that such books as this are hard to digest.

I was skeptical at first when I bought this book. I thought "here we go again" with another story about our forefather's flaws, but the writer handled the book with sensitivity. Her family's story is one that should be told and is truly believable. Why this story has been hidden for so long is truly a blot on American history. The book is interesting -especially to those who want a deep and meaningful read.

This book was very hard to put down. If you do not read another history book in your life, you MUST READ this one. Not only did I learn a lot about last names in slavery days, but how our people were treated, such a the story in the book about the dog and the man with one arm. It as sad to see the daughter passing and not being proud of who she is and where see came from. Since I have not finished the book, I will write a review about the next 200 pages when I'm finished.

The book is a great read, and contains documented evidence of the very strong connection of the Fords to the Washington family. I don't think you will find ANY slaveowners leaving a former slave 160 acres of land in a will without a family connection. That fact alone is proof to me of the relationship. Of course, it is easy to blame it on the ubiquitous "nephew," as happened with the Thomas Jefferson-Sally Hemings case. Truth be known, there is unlikely to be a single Virginia founding-father-type, "aristocratic" slave-owning family without its black offshoot. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, and these folks had total and complete power over their slaves, and nature was bound to take its course. I know of other stories such as this, and have a few in my family that will probably never be told, at least not by me. In my spouse's family, it was the ninth governor of Alabama. What a country this is! If we can ever come to tell the truth about beginnings, maybe we can commence to really move forward toward building the kind of nation that we claim we are.

Carole is still obsessing over Samson, to the detriment of her grades, other stable work, and relationship with the Saddle Club. Lisa and she aren't speaking, ever since Lisa found out that Carole had been keeping the secret of Prancer's pregnancy from her. And A.J.'s still acting weird, so the club and their friends have set up a confrontation. I agree with the other reviewers that it was a little too rough, though perhaps necessary.

This Pine Hollow book is one of the best. I havn't read any further than this because I can't find any more, but I'm going to order them soon. The AJ thing was getting so frusterating, I was glad to find out the truth. I found it a bit surprising when Veronica draged the truth out of him, and as for the way she hangs on to scott - GAG! I know some people feel the same way about Alex and Lisa, but I know people like that in real life so... Carole's obsession with Samson is screaming trouble, she's forgotten all about Starlight. I think Ben should say something too her about it. and as for stevie's brothers giving her a hard time about teasing Michal, he deserves it!

At least young enough to not remember a thing about his real parents. Also, why did he need to see his sister's birth certificate. She's like 5,he's 16.Wouldn't he remember when she was born?Oh well.I think his parents should have told him when he was younger. He probably would have found out someday anyway.Wouldn't he have.I think the pull-it-out-of-A.J.-confrontation was a little rough.First if all, there were to many people there, they should only his closest friends. Not every person he knew within a hundred miles. And why was A.J. so suprised when everybody thought he was on dope. The stupid way he was acting, anyone could have thought that.I think they should've had so many people,I also think that they kind of pried it out of him. They can be curious about his problem, but at the same time, they need to respect his privacy. They were so pushy with him, they almost made the poor guy shed tears. For a 16 year old guy, that's really embarassing in front of all friends.Oh well.I'm the kind of person who picks over EVERY bad thing in a book.Even when the book is good. There always seems to be something bad to point out. This book isn't as bad as I make it sound. It's actually a really good book.I would recommend reading. It's money well spent.Bonnie Bryant is a wonderful author.Read all her books.

P.S. How could they not think he could be a druggie. In future books he becomes a drunk anyway. That doesn't exactly comfort everyone's suspicions for this.A.J. has a problem. He can't even learn anything from one mistake.Books 7 and 9 seem to display his character pretty bad.Starting a beer bash to bringing Vodka to dinner to fake ID's to drinking in a college bar,A.J. seems to have done it all.He needs help. He's a pretty weak creature.Short, skinny, and a wimp to peer pressure.Hmmm.He could use a gym and a revival.

Love it! It was my favortive super edition saddle club book yet. First Stevie falls off her horse and has to stay in bed a whole week. I loved how Stevie was having all these dreams and they started coming true! And Lisa and Carole started to see how Stevie's world is really like! Another great saddle club book! Love all your books Bonnie!

I had a subscription to The Saddle Club book club, i got a new book every month, my mom cancelled my subscription because the way Stevie gets better can't happen in real life (My mom is a doctor). So this was not one of Bryant's best.

A great Read!

Need I say more? This book was, in every detail, exciting from cover to cover! Stevie's future predicting, the prank on Veronica, Phil's plane crash, and Stevie's confusing personality change are all greatly planned additions to the plot. I had a joyful time reading this book.

Very Interesting

This book had a lot of twist and turns. It shows that the saddle club is always there for one another and even if Stevie is acting wierd(even for her) her friends will always stick by her.

Great Book!!

I loved this book, it was a real page turner. I just have one suggestion to Bonnie Bryant. In almost all the Saddle Club books it's Veronica who messes stuff up. Every single time there's a catastrophee you know who was behind it. I think that for once she should write a book from Veronica's point of view instead of always making her the un-realistic designated "bad guy".

"The Story of the NBA's Rising Young Star Kobe Bryant" great for Lakers' fans. If you like basketball you will like this nonfiction book. Joseph Layden .I thought that the book was very easy to read and young children could read it by themselves. In my mind he is the best player ever. It the best book I ever read. I like the book, because I like to play basketball too.
In the beginning of the book it talks about his father and mother how they met each other. The book talked a bit about his family and also where he attend at school. I like the book, because you can image in your mind what it is talking about, and you can learn a little bit of vocabulary.
The setting of the book is in Philadelphia and also in Los Angeles. The author wrote the book very well, because it gives a lot of important information, it the best book I ever read. I like the book, because I like to play basketball too. I want to read more byJoseph Laden.
I want to recommend to book to people that like the Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe Bryant and who like to play basketball. The book makes you think that you could be a great basketball player like Kobe, if you keep on practicing. I would recommend this book to grade school and also high school students.

I chose the book, Kobe, because I love basketball, and I was interested in knowing more about the life of Kobe Bryant. I was surprised to learn about Kobe's upbringing and background because it was totally different than what I had expected.

I liked this book because it tells all about Kobe Bryant's love for basketball, and his determination and drive to improve his skills. Kobe's basketball career begins when his family moves back to his hometown in America. The book also contains a lot of really cool pictures.

Learn about how this young star athlete developed into an all star basketball player. Joe Layden does a terrific job in revealing what makes Kobe a superstar. I recommend this book to anyone interested in basketball. It is very inspirational!

i don't care if you like this review or not, but kobe should realize now what he had w/ shaq: the best player in the game, and now that it's his team they are not even going to make the playoffs- and kobe cares too much what the media says about him- blaming everyone else and telling on shaq and his "hush money" and karl malone "harassing" his wife- shut up kobe and just play your selfish game
