Interesting to see my stage of life

There are two things I like about this book:
The author compellingly laid out the stages of a person's life in spans of years: age "Seven to Fourteen" or "Thirty-eight to Forty-two". The former is my step-kids ages and the latter is mine - and I learned why actions and thoughts are occuring. I also liked his use of prominant people from history to show how events seem to happen at certain ages - from Marie Curry to Marilyn Monroe.
Finally, I enjoyed the poetic prose and pictures the author helped to create in my mind. The words just flowed and didn't use any tired old jargon.

In their review of "Victims and Heroes," Modern Fiction Studies says that "This expansive study will in all likelihood become a classic in African American literary interpretation," and this "new book must now be accepted as the definitive work on this subject as it pertains to more than a century and a half of African American writing."

A welcome contribution to college library and Iberian literature study shelves

Spanish literature scholar and professor Bryant Creel presents The Voice Of The Phoenix: Metaphors Of Death And Rebirth In Classics Of The Iberian Renaissance, an in-depth examination of how Spanish and Portuguese literary masterpieces from between the late fifteenth and early seventeenth centuries subtly contributed to the changing social attitudes and cultures in a "Renaissance" transitional era, that gradually transformed the restrictions of a dominant medieval traditionalism. Arguing that Renaissance authors sought to develop literary culture along secular lines in order to "modernize" a society while slipping under the watchful radar of theology-based censorship, The Voice Of The Phoenix scrutinizes such classics as poems of Fray Luis de Leon, and works of prose fiction including "Lazarillo de Tormes", Jorge de Montemayor's "Diana", and Cervantes' "Don Quixote". Divided into independent essays each scrutinizing a specific topic yet all linked by common themes of (often metaphorical) death and rebirth, The Voice of the Phoenix is a welcome contribution to college library and Iberian literature study shelves.

Julia Bryant has written a novel full of humanity. The reader is immersed in the Portsmouth of the Great War and immedietaly afterwards. This rich tale of the women who wait for their sailors shows their strength and humour. Through the skilfully crafted plot the reader is swept along in the ebb and flow of the lives of the Forrest women. It is a beautifully written book from a new writer.

This volume is a critical examination of the poet's work, which attempts to search out the sources of his creativity and to define the dynamics of his creative process. By studying in detail many of the lesser known poems, as well as those frequently reprinted, the reader is brought to a full appreciation of Bryant's achievement as an artist and as a thinker. Bryant, who was also editor of the New York Evening Post, a leading anti-slavery paper noted for its literary accuracy, has been known as a nature poet because of such works as "Thanatopis," "To a Waterfowl," "Inscription for the Entrance to a Wood," and "The Yellow Violet," all written before he was twenty-one.

A well writen comibation biography/history. For those whom Bryant is an unknown he was an early to mid 19th. Century American Poet/Newspaper Owner/Editorial Writer. Prof. Muller combines these two side of Bryants live very well in his narrative. Bryant was a Northern Democrat who dealth with the changing opinion on slavery during this volital period. This personal transformation and him still remaining a loyal Democrat till 1860 is a remarkable story.

The only fault I can find with this book is that the author incorporates Bryants poetry into the narrative, I would have perfered that he added them to the end of each chapter and not break up his narrative. Other then that minor complaint this is over all and excellent book.
