A Great Biography - this review refers to all three volumes.

Review Date: 1999-08-28
The three volumes that make up Bryant's biography of Pepys are a delight to any reader who wishes to step back in time and immerse him or herself in another era. Bryant covers not only the period which Pepys himself chronicles in his diary, but also provides the "prequel" and "sequel" of the life before and after. The amount of detail available for these periods is quite staggering but always lively and, as with the diary itself, one has the feeling of being an eyewitness to history. Not only are we treated to the grand spectacles - the return of Charles II, the Plague and the Great Fire - but also to more mundane details that touch us across the centuries, sometimes by their familiarity, sometimes by their sense of anxiety and sometimes by their immediacy. Pepys often comes across, by his own admission, as venal and lecherous, but he also demonstrates loyalty, courage and generosity. His patient support of his brother-in-law, Balty, his fears for his possible loss of sight, his sorrow at his too-early loss of is wife, his simple pleasure in playing music with his in-house musician, all make him love him as if we knew him personally. But in addition we see Pepys grow in stature as an executive, as a man of action and as a man of principle. We see him shouldering the burden of naval administrative reform, standing his ground under parliamentary enquiry, journeying to Tangier to wind up affairs there, sticking to his principles and his friends, and displaying loyalty to his patrons, at a time of political and religious witch-hunting - and even hiding himself in a tavern to gain evidence of his most dangerous enemy plotting against him. This splendid biography has much of the richness and sense of period of Churchill's "Marlborough" and at the end leaves the reader feeling that they have known a man as fallible as themselves, but probably, on balance, a great deal better. A marvellous book - buy, beg, borrow or steal all three volumes!

A Brilliant Memoir
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-25
Brilliant is the only word that fits this award-winning memoir- style novel penned by relatively unknown Briton Ray Bryant. The book's main character, ordinary and unremarkable serial-killer Johnny Smith, opens the first chapter of the book by writing a letter from the 'Broodmoor Hospital for the Clinically Insane'. Through the letter, we gain unique insight into the haunted and devastated mind of Bryant's chief protagonist. The second chapter delves into the mental patient's recollection of a tormented childhood at the hands of an uncaring, unloving mother, and the story progresses from there on. Little, Brown/Warner is a well-respected book publisher, and why this 'write a blockbuster novel' winner is not a bestseller remains a great mystery. Bryant's command of the language is superb, and he is able to balance recounting things in the perspective of a mentally sick man trapped in a childhood trauma with the nuance of a master storyteller. Read this book, it has character and a stimuli-evoking ambience that reads off the pages. And, once again, it's as brilliant as its totally ordinary, completely unremarkable, Johnny Smith.

The content of this book helped me tremendously when I was researching my father's type of lung cancer and all the treatments. I was able to find good layperson scientific information that helped me talk with the doctors and helped my dad make decisions. I would highly recommend this book!

I heard Steve Bryant on the Rollye James show on XM Radio. I was so impressed that I ordered his book a few days later.
It is a great book that is full of terrific advice laced with humor. It would be a wonderful read for the beginning salesperson and a fun and common sense reminder for the seasoned marketer! It doesn't stop there. It would be great for anyone who has contact with other human beings!
I am encouraging my entire staff to read it.

A great portrail of Chicago's south side and it's real soul

This book is an excellent portrial of life in Chicago's south side in a time most of us have not lived. In this case the poet is now living Minnesota, which I think gives an even greater prospective on Chicago because of the extream differences between the two places. If you are looking for a refrence on the south side of Chicago and alot of laughs Philip Bryant's book of poetry covers both. I can't wait for more books from this author.

You really can't go wrong with SS! All the books and movies are wholesome and entertaining. I love reading them to my daughter and watching the movies with her. Actually, my son loves them too but would never admit it to his friends (he's 9). Good thing he has a little sister ;)

Continuing to Stand in the Gap
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-09-08
David Bryant's groundbreaking work of decades ago, called In the Gap, has matured into one of the most important works about practical Christianity ever crafted. His exegesis of Ezekiel 22:30 goes so deep and so broad that one can forget that the whole work is exegetical in its foundation though it is pure and sweet praxis in its exploration. Stand in the Gap is the best answer I've found yet to the question "Why am I still here on earth after I am saved?" It is complicated and deep, because so is its subject matter: shallow pithy brevity would be giving a starving man a carrot stick. Bryant's feast invites, even requires, a lot of coming back for 'seconds'. The small-group questions tied to each chapter are a great help: i.e. actually study this book with a small group of folks ready to hold each other accountable to acting on what God shows you through it. I use it as a textbook in a class I teach about having a heart for God in a lost and hapless world.
Anyone who has ever looked for meaning in life: here it is. There is work for us to do. There is a role we must play. There is a purpose for each of us. Yours can be found right here, "in the Gap."
In a word, this book is... indispensable.

Beautiful designs, excellent sizes!

The floral representations are beautiful, and the designs are the perfect size for most hand-worked embroidery projects. Unlike many iron on transfer floral designs, the patterns are not overly large. These designs are elegant and realistic looking, and will be stitched into beautiful and sentimental projects. I liked it so much this is my SECOND purchase of this book of designs (my embroidery students like them too!).

Stories for Children of All Ages
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-29
Whether story telling is your main event, or just a back-up at Nationals, this book is all you will need to be well prepared and successful in story telling. With 48 classic, charming, heart-warming stories, this book conveniently doubles as a good book to read to your children or siblings. I personally found this book very enjoyable to read. As it is broken down by "single stories for the young," "second level" stories, "third level" stories, and stories "for later grade school," this book helps guide the user as to which stories would best fit their audience. Including classics like "The Little Red Hen" and "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" as well as new tales such as "Another Red Hen" and "Margaret of New Orleans," this book has something for everyone. Enjoyable and user-friendly from cover to cover, and comprised of tales adored by children of all ages, this book is a must have for parents, teachers, and anyone interested in individual events.

Most useful book I've ever had
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-05
I rated this book 5 stars because it has been extremely useful to me in my job.

I studied it while I was in university and decided to keep it...that was a great idea since I landed in a job at a Corporation where I had to do presentations about strategy, due diligences, and participate & implement organizational changes. The Director of my department said that my work had the level of an MBA graduate (even though I did not had an MBA, I was just using this book) and gave me a promotion.

After five years of work I did start to do my MBA and did not find a better book about strategy implementation than this one. Unfortunately, there was a flood in my city and the book was wasted and I am seeking to buy a new one.
