My interest in this book started when a former employer/friend's wife asked me to get a copy if I ever found it. This was about 12-13 years ago. Her older brother was an original Alamo Scout and participated on this raid liberating POW's in the Phillipine Islands just prior to the close of WW II. I was unable to locate the book and eventually got a phone number connecting me with a most gracious Mr. Johnson who informed me that he was going to print with some more copies. I was active duty Navy and working for Admiral John D. Bulkely (a Medal of Honor recipient) on the Board of Inspection and Survey at the time. The Admiral was famous for taking General MacArthur and family out of the PI on Navy PT boats at the start of the war. Mr Johnson told me the Alamo Scouts worked closely with the PT boat Navy for some of their operations throughout the war. Mr. Johnson's book was very informative and about something I knew very little of. The heroism of the individuals involved and the author's ability in recounting their story was inspiring and a good read. We are fortunate to have someone tell this remarkable story. The soldier I mentioned at the start made a career in the Army Special Forces and also participated in the Raid on Son Tay POW camp in North Vietnam many years later. If only I had known that there were real life hero's right near that little town I was raised in Iowa. I was unaware of so many things when I was a youngster.

An interesting story of untold African American History
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

Mr. Charles provides very detailed specifics into the making of the Black American Heritage Flag which few knew about in the 1960s. I gained insight into his great love for his culture, and his persistence in creating a flag which represents the struggles and triumphs of African-American people. It was interesting to discover the challenges involved in the journey of two middle class gentlemen and their quest to be identified and acknowledged as proud African-Americans.

We picked this book up at a thrift type store and my 4 year old daughter loves it. She loves looking at the easy to look at pictures and they font they used is so simple for anyone to read. She is learning to read and recognize numbers so quickly after picking up this book. I am actually trying to find all of the books listed on the back....

Cute, colorful, fun. My 1st child really enjoyed it and now I'm ordering another one for my 2nd child. The book is 24 pages. Pages 3-19 are fun practice of various strokes with pages 20-24 being lower case letters. Being from Europe, the lower case letter shapes don't appear to be a standard manuscript for the US, but I bought it for the stroke practice.

A very brave attempt to construct a lifeview

Though I am not a metaphysicist, I look at this book as an opportunity for the average reader, such as myself, to formulate a view of life and focus on a sense of purpose. It's storyline is interesting, but the real bargain is in the though-provoking situations the writer puts us in.

Reducing Poverty, Building Peace
Coralie Bryant and Cristina Kappaz

Over 20 years ago, Coralie Bryant's influential book, Managing Development in the Third World, co-authored with Louise White, set the standard as the fundamental text and reference describing the state of the art in international development management. Both visionary and practical, it emphasized several themes central to success and which helped to overcome the deficiencies of "blueprint" design: (1) the process of implementation involves far more than carrying out the plan; it is the central activity through which learning takes place which is essential for effective design; (2) participation matters, not only on ethical and political grounds, but also because it improves efficiency by generating key information and local resources essential to projects; (3) how one organizes often has much more influence on development outcomes than does the formulation of policy, and, (4) perhaps most important, real development comes from within--the key trick is for well-meaning "outsiders" (both foreign donors and national elites) to learn from this process and try to support it.

Now in 2005, Bryant (with her co-author Cristina Kappaz) continues these themes (particularly in Chapters 4 and 5) and expands them in a completely new book that responds to the current development challenges. In addition to a thoughtful and succinct discussion of policies and programs as well as projects, it also carefully examines the relationship between development and peace-building, showing how each can enhance the other. Most important, she continues the important message that despite the often daunting challenges, development is possible. Based on years of experience, she shows how international development, particularly at the local level, is alive and well, and she is full of practical and hopeful insights demonstrating how those involved in this struggle are crafting innovative solutions, maintaining the momentum, and expanding its scale and scope.

Reducing Poverty, Building Peace is destined to take its place alongside her earlier work as an essential text, both for the seasoned manager as well as those just starting out. While the book unfortunately arrived too late last year to be on my required reading list, the chapters that the students were able to read were highly influential and its themes tended to dominate the discussion. This year it will definitely become my central text, and if I could only choose one book, this would certainly be my choice.

I love it. It has hundreds of riddles from many times and cultures, including the answer to Lewis Carrol's "Why is a raven like a writing desk?" The first half goes into detail about the character and makeup of riddles, while the second half has riddles listed by author and their answers at the end.

Everything your Little Princess could ask for...
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-30
This is a truly adorable little book. Help four bunny princesses (Rose, Tulip, Clover, and Lilac) find their extra special Easter eggs, and help them discover the surprises inside. Each page has a sparkly, 3 dimensional egg that opens up to reveal a hidden treasure. At the end, all the princess bunnies attend a royal Easter tea party.

As all little girls do, my daughter loves princesses, glittery things, and surprises. This is another book she requests repeatedly. The story is sweet and very simple; the illustrations are opulent and quite lovely. It is also a very sturdy book. It has withstood many repeated viewings by young hands and still looks brand new.

The Royal Easter Tea Party is the perfect Easter gift for your little princess.
