Good writers can offer facts and poetry without nonsense! Review Date: 2005-01-06
Terrific!Review Date: 2004-01-15
One of the professional reviews complained that this book had vocabulary that was "too sophisticated" for young children. I was annoyed by this. If you dumb everything down to what kids already know, then where will they learn new terms?
My 5-year-old enjoyed reading this book, and I enjoyed listening to her. I found the book charming and informative. For example, I didn't know that when fish are waiting out the winter, "Except for occasional / lake bottom treats / the whole winter long / the fish hardly eats!"

A unique voiceReview Date: 2001-07-12
That he has chosen to work in the realm of the speculative is the rich gain of genre fiction fans everywhere. Bryant's stories, set in his adoptive home state, are sometimes unsettling, sometimes wondrous, but always populated with people who live, breathe, love and feel pain. Take a trip with him to Wyoming, and you'll never feel quite the same about the West or the human heart again.

Just Brilliant, Beautifully Written, ThrillingReview Date: 2004-12-11
There really aren't many books of history that I find almost impossible to put down - but each of the volumes of this trilogy fits that description. I like that this book begins with war and its conclusion - but spends at least half of its contents on the peace that followed the terrible wars.
This is not a book for the academic - but very much intended for the general reader. It does indeed have a bias - the author's love of his Britain which was going through the Second World War as he wrote, is clear. It also has a bias toward social equity among the economic classes - and toward order rather than chaos.
The author delights in the personalities of the period - and is unparalleled in his evocation of the time.
This series is just wonderful.

Great motivational memoir!Review Date: 2007-03-18
Beyond looking at the book from a literary standpoint, the story and the message within the story make this book stand out. Krauss recounts his career in football with humor, with touching sensitivity, and with frank honesty. From high school through his years in professional football, Krauss gives the reader a rare inside view of that world. As he says, he lived the life many dream about and he's appreciative of the experience.
I'm not an avid football fan, but this book pulled me into this life devoted to the team and the game. I felt the tug of the ups and downs players and fans rejoice in and suffer from. The highlight of the book, of course, is Krauss' recounting of his years playing for Paul "Bear" Bryant on the University of Alabama football team. The climax is the one play-- the Goal Line Stand, on January 1, 1979, in the Sugar Bowl game against Penn State--where Krauss stopped Penn State's Mike Gunman from scoring. Football enthusiasts will enjoy Krauss' description of the play that stopped time. While reading that section, I felt the crack of helmets and came away with a better understanding of football fanatics.... (reviewed by Lou Belcher, freelance writer and editor)

Early Maine Viewed Through the CameraReview Date: 2006-08-05
Included are views of the town, river, islands, and special events like a train wreck and floods. The life of long ago intrigues with scenes of harvesting ice from the river, steamboats, logging scenes, and other vignettes of early Maine.
The text gives enough to expand on the photo, but not enough to distract from the visual quality of the book.

Koss does not "attempt" explanations she nails them. "They're made of tiny water drops,/ So light they float/ above rooftops..." is not a "cursory explanation" but "the sort of detailed description that would satisfy a young audience" of five to nine year olds.
My five year old daughter joins our dog in his bed and reads these poems to him. She enjoys the pictures that complement the same quiet interest the poems generate. I do not expect she will get into any Esthetic Analysis of Bryant's illustrations, it only matters that they catch her attention and work with each poem, and they do.
Some words my daughter does not understand, and unbeknownst to some professionals, parents can anticipate questions, and kids can just ask. Terms like "gravity" and "sensor" give parents a chance to offer ostensive explanations: "Gravity is what makes that book fall; it pulls the book and the ground together." "Your hand is like a gravity sensor because it can tell which way the book pulls, much like a root does."
Amy Koss shows children that both facts and poetry can be fun. She does not stoop to impart knowledge by disguising it with nonsense, as so many children's book authors do. Get this book, and you will surely enjoy more time with your brightening child.
